Love Beneath Two Suns

Chapter Twenty-Six — The Merchant’s Bath

Saphira gestured for him to follow. Two guards led them through a connecting passage into a separate villa attached to the warehouse — far more opulent than anything Zephyr had seen in Uruk.

“Leave us to the attendants,” Saphira ordered the guards.

Four young women stood there in delicate linen dresses, their curves visible beneath the thin cloth.

The bathing chamber took his breath for a moment. Warm steam drifted from a sunken stone bathing pool at the room's center. Oil lamps cast a golden glow across plastered mudbrick walls. Wooden shelves held dozens of alabaster jars filled with scented oils and perfumes. Thick woven mats lay beside the water, while a small lapis-inlaid chest rested against the wall.

“Saphira, are you a princess or a queen?” Zephyr asked cautiously.

Saphira gave a short laugh. “Neither. Ur has a king, but he is content to sit on a throne and call that ruling.”

“You don't sound very fond of him.”

“I am not.” Her eyes hardened. “Every proposal is the same. Trade here. Negotiate there. Wait. Be patient. He speaks of preserving what we have.”

She looked toward the city walls through the narrow wall opening. “I speak of taking what should rightly rest in our hands.”

Zephyr studied her for a moment. “So you're the dangerous one.”

Saphira gestured with two fingers, and the attendants moved at once. Two approached Saphira, gently unpinning her robes. The crimson fabric slid from her shoulders, revealing the gentle slope of her breasts with dark nipples, a softly rounded stomach, and elegantly curved hips. She stood completely naked without a trace of shame, her skin glowing in the warm light.

Zephyr forced his gaze aside.

Another pair of attendants turned to him. Their hands were gentle but unrelenting as they removed his traveler’s cloak, then his tunic. When they reached his lower garments, he hesitated only a moment before letting them proceed. The cool air brushed his skin as he stood bare before them.

Saphira let out a soft, amused laugh. “You try so hard not to look… Have you never seen true beauty before?”

She stepped closer, completely at ease in her nakedness. Her breasts shifted gently with each step. “Come.”

The attendants guided Saphira into the pool first. As she bent and stepped down into the water, her hips swayed in a smooth, natural rhythm.

Zephyr watched for a moment, then exhaled and looked away, before he was guided into the pool as well.

The water was perfectly heated, scented with rose and myrrh. Two women knelt at the pool's edge, dipping cloths into the scented water before gently washing her.

While the other two attended Zephyr. Their hands moved over his shoulders, chest, and back in smooth, professional strokes.

Zephyr looked briefly at the attendants, then spoke in a measured tone. “There are still details to discuss.”

Saphira leaned back against the edge of the pool as an attendant massaged oil into her breasts. “Speak freely. These women are mine. They hear nothing that leaves this room.”

He tried to ignore as one attendant’s hands were now moving lower, rinsing his abdomen. “If I’m going to move through Uruk, I’ll need protection. A few of your men. They can blend in. If anything goes wrong.”

Saphira’s smile widened. “An interesting request,” she murmured. “You may do so. But understand if my men are caught or cause chaos, I will not take responsibility. My hands remain clean.”

A silver chalice rested on the stone ledge beside the pool. Saphira lifted it and took a sip of sweet date wine, then gestured lazily with two fingers toward his lap.

“Attend him properly.”

“They are —” Zephyr said.

Before he could finish, the attendants descended into the pool and settled beside him. Water soaked their sheer robes, pressing the fabric against their bodies. The outline of their nipples showed plainly through the wet linen.

The slender attendant poured warm, scented water over Zephyr’s already hardening length, then wrapped her soft, practiced fingers around him. Another attendant cupped his balls gently, massaging them.

“Wait… what are you doing?” Zephyr asked.

Saphira’s voice stayed calm. “Cleaning you.”

Zephyr’s breath hitched. He tried to look away, but his gaze was drawn helplessly to Saphira.

The sight of her gentle, sloping breasts stirred an unwanted memory in Zephyr’s mind—Elara’s cousin, and the way Elara had once caught his gaze and turned cold with it.

He swallowed hard. No… no.

Zephyr’s hips jerked once. His eyes were still locked on Saphira’s oiled breasts when the sudden, intense wave crashed over him.

He came hard with a low, choked groan, spilling thick ropes of seed into the attendant’s hand. The woman paused, a shy smile slipping onto her face.

Zephyr’s silence stretched. He looked away, swallowing hard, his breath uneven. For a moment, he couldn’t bring himself to meet anyone’s eyes.

Saphira rose from the water and stepped out of the pool. Immediately, two attendants wrapped a deep crimson linen garment around her, the wet fabric clinging briefly before settling. She tied it loosely at her waist.

“I… apologize,” Zephyr muttered, voice rough. “That was… unexpected.”

Saphira took another slow sip of wine, watching him over the rim of the cup.

“So soon?” she said, eyebrows raised. “I expected better control from a man who claims to see rhythms others miss.”

She glanced at the attendant. “It seems your new techniques are working beautifully.”

“Men will be given to you,” Saphira said over her shoulder as she moved toward the doorway, voice calm and commanding. “Exactly as you requested. Use them wisely.”

With a final amused glance, she disappeared through the curtained exit, leaving the faint scent of cedar behind her.

Zephyr exhaled slowly, disturbed by how easily Saphira had pulled him briefly back into a version of himself he thought he had left behind.

The attendants waited.

He tilted his head slightly toward them. “Ask your mistress,” he said at last, “where she intends to put me.”

One of them bowed and slipped away.

Zephyr leaned back against the stone edge. The steam had thinned now, leaving behind a dull ache in his limbs and the strange emptiness that follows excess.

In Eresh, the air still carried the weight of recovery.

Ila stood alone in the widow’s storeroom.

A shallow bowl of water rested before her. Beside it, a strip of woven reed and a fragment of dyed cloth. She dipped her fingers into the bowl.

Then she raised her hand slowly toward the sky.

“Inanna,” she said. “Lady of the morning and the blade. You who choose desire and war in the same breath…”

Her fingers traced a small motion in the air. “If this marriage is shadow or fate… show me which hand is guiding it. And if it is fate, grant me the wisdom not to turn away from it.”

She pressed her palm briefly to her forehead, then to her chest.

Only then did she open her eyes again — calmer, but not settled.

Aylin appeared at the edge of the courtyard, breath slightly uneven, eyes already searching Ila’s face before she even spoke.

“Marriage?” She stepped closer. “Whose marriage?”

The next morning, light cut through the merchant villa in clean, pale gold.

Zephyr woke before he fully opened his eyes.

For a moment, he just lay still. Would Kesh have found them?

His jaw tightened as he opened his eyes.

Only the manuscripts would not cut it.

He pushed himself upright and got outside.

Before sunrise, Zephyr wandered Ur's markets beneath a wrapped cloak. He purchased polished amber from northern traders, fine wool from shepherd merchants, and several narrow bronze rods from a smith who seemed puzzled by their size.

By the time the morning crowds filled the streets, he had already vanished.

When he came back, Saphira was already there.

She wore a deep indigo wool robe so finely woven it fell in smooth folds. A pale mantle edged with gold beads rested over her shoulders, and a worked bronze belt gathered the garment at her waist. Her hair was pinned up in a controlled spill.

Behind her, attendants moved without sound. The men Zephyr had requested stood at the edge of the courtyard now.

Her gaze lifted to him briefly. “You slept well?” she asked.

Zephyr paused. “Yes.”

“Good,” she replied. “The villa can be… distracting at night. Some people find it difficult to rest after arriving.”

Then she looked back at the men. “Your guards are ready.”

Zephyr frowned. “That's more than I asked for.”

Saphira shrugged. “You asked for protection. I provided it.”

“You’re very quick to grant requests,” he said. “I’m not sure whether that’s generosity… or calculation.”

She handed a pouch in Zephyr’s hand, heavy enough to speak without being opened.

Zephyr’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I didn’t ask for payment.”

“You will need it,” Saphira added. “Men who refuse gifts tend to run out of leverage at the worst possible time.”

Zephyr studied her for a beat longer than necessary. “…Fine,” he said at last, slipping the pouch away.

Saphira’s gaze returned to him. “You will go to Uruk?”

Zephyr adjusted his tunic. “Eresh.”

“What does Eresh offer you that Uruk does not?”

His eyes drifted past her. “People I need to meet.”

Saphira looked at the things Zephyr had brought. “And what,” she said. “Are you refusing to say out loud?”

He met her eyes now. “Something large,” he said. “And it doesn’t care whether we’re ready for it or not.”
