Arrival in an isekai

Chapter 62: prove your loyalty. Walk through yourself.

You stand perfectly still, hands relaxed at your sides, giving Celestine the space she needs to process. The throne room remains frozen in tense silence, guards still holding weapons but no longer advancing, courtiers clustered in small groups whispering urgently. Distant siege sounds filter through the high windows, catapults thumping, orc war drums, goblin shrieks, but inside. Time feels suspended.

Celestine descends from her dais slowly, violet eyes fixed on the massive portal showing the pristine elven haven beyond. Her priestess raiment accentuating her form with each step. She stops three paces from you, close enough to speak without shouting but maintaining formal distance.

"You speak of affinity separation," she says quietly, voice carefully controlled. "What determines where my people would go?"

"The passageway will," you reply evenly. "Their own affinities will sort them automatically as they cross. Aura, Mare, please describe the demiplanes."

Aura bounces forward eagerly, red eyes bright. "The Dark Elven Demiplane is awesome! Shadowed forests with glowing mushrooms, underground caverns full of crystals, volcanic plains for training, labyrinth jungles to explore. There's a World Tree in the center, Sunwell on the highest peak for magic, citadels scattered everywhere for defense and living. It's empty now except for animals and some low-tier monsters, enough to hunt for fun, not dangerous to a group. Mare and I will rule it, make it safe for elves who like the dark, the cunning, the powerful stuff."

Mare nods shyly from behind her, clutching his staff. "Y-yes... it'll be nice..."

Aura grins wider. "The Light Elven Demiplane is the opposite, sunny forests, flowing rivers, open meadows, crystal lakes. Same setup: World Tree, Sunwell, citadels, gateway entrance. Perfect for elves of kindness and light. You'll rule that one, Queen!"

Celestine's expression shifts slightly, processing the implications.

One of her advisors steps forward, the graying human man you noted earlier. His voice is smooth, reasonable. "And the catch, mysterious savior? There's always a catch to such generosity."

You turn your gaze to him directly. He stiffens under the weight of your attention. "The catch is quite simple. I have no interest in your traitors. Same as those able to hear this city-wide telepathic announcement, the portal only allows those who are loyal to Queen Celestine to pass through. Those who are not will be stopped by the barrier, free to claim this city for their allies outside the walls."

The advisor's face drains of color. Throughout the throne room, several courtiers shift uncomfortably. Through the telepathic link still active citywide, you feel the ripple of shock, fear, and grim satisfaction spreading among the population.

Celestine stares at you, then at her advisor, then back at the portal. Her hands tremble slightly before she clasps them together. "You're saying you'll separate the loyal from the disloyal. Automatically."

"The passageway will," you correct gently. "I'm simply offering that passage. Your people's own hearts will determine who crosses and who remains. I'll be presenting the other races who can pass through a different world once I reach it."

The graying advisor takes a step backward, then another. His eyes dart toward the side exits. Three guards shift positions subtly, blocking potential escape routes without explicit orders.

Celestine closes her eyes for a long moment. When she opens them again, tears glisten on her lashes but her voice is steady. "How long do I have to decide?"

You glance toward the high windows where smoke from the siege drifts past, black against the midday sky, distant rumbling through stone. "Your army has until the saboteurs open the gates. Your people have until the orcs and goblins overrun the streets. You have until either the saboteurs or the enemy leaders waltz into this throne room and take... the choice, from you." You pause, letting the reality settle. "And before you ask, I’ve already created you a place as a ruler with the intention of helping you and your people. I will not coddle those unwilling to follow your lead. "

You settle into stillness, crossing your arms loosely as the throne room processes your final words. The massive portal to the elven haven remains open, sunlight streaming through from the pristine forests beyond. Behind you, Albedo watches with golden eyes gleaming, Grayfia and Oriax stand in perfect symmetry with crimson gazes analytical, Gabriel folds her twelve wings tight around herself still processing her recent claiming, Jibril's feathers rustle with academic curiosity, Ikaros remains motionless at your side, and the dark elf twins shift nervously.

Celestine stares at the graying advisor, Darius, whose face has gone ash-pale. Her violet eyes narrow slightly. "How long do I have to decide," she repeats softly, but her tone has shifted from questioning to declaratory. "You said the saboteurs will open the gates. You said they'll waltz into this throne room."

Darius takes another step backward, hand sliding toward his belt. "Your Majesty, we should discuss this privately before making any rash decisions. This stranger could be lying about everything. The portal might lead to a trap, a prison, slavery worse than what the orcs would offer. We don't know his true intentions."

One of the younger guards, a human woman with short brown hair and a scar across her cheek, speaks up suddenly. "I heard him in my head. Every word. He said the portal only lets through people loyal to Queen Celestine." Her eyes lock on Darius with dawning realization. "Why are you arguing against it so hard, Commander?"

Darius's hand closes around the dagger hilt. "Because it's obviously a trick to divide us when we need unity most."

"Then prove it," Celestine says quietly, descending the final steps to stand directly before the massive portal. "Walk through. Show us there's nothing to fear."

Darius freezes. Sweat beads on his forehead. "Your Majesty, I cannot abandon my post while the city is under siege. My duty is to protect you here, not to test unknown magic."

"Your duty." Celestine's voice drops to a whisper that somehow carries through the entire throne room. "Yes. Let's talk about duty."

She turns to face her court, platinum hair swinging. "I've suspected traitors in my court for weeks. Supplies vanishing. Guard rotations shifted without my approval. Messages intercepted. Intelligence reaching the enemy faster than our own scouts could deliver it." Her violet eyes sweep across the assembled nobles and guards. "I lacked evidence to act. But now this stranger has offered me something better than evidence. A test that cannot lie."

She raises her voice, projecting clearly. "All who are loyal to me, all who wish to be saved from the nightmare coming for this city, approach the portal. Walk through. Find sanctuary in the elven havens prepared for you. All who hesitate, all who refuse, all who argue against salvation, reveal yourselves as what you truly are."

The throne room erupts. Guards surge forward immediately, three dozen rushing toward the portal without hesitation. Civilians who had been sheltering in the castle's inner chambers pour through side doors, having heard the telepathic broadcast. A wave of humanity and elves streams toward the silver gateway.

Darius draws his dagger fully now, face twisted with rage and panic. Six guards near him draw weapons as well, revealing themselves as part of his network. Seven nobles cluster together near the far wall, frozen with terror as their loyalties are exposed.

You release the telepathic connection with a thought, letting the city-wide broadcast fade. The mental silence that follows is almost louder than the spell itself. You step smoothly aside from the portal's entrance, moving to where Aura and Mare stand watching the unfolding chaos with rapt attention.

Your hand settles gently on Aura's head first, fingers threading through her wild gold hair. She leans into the touch immediately, heterochromic eyes bright with excitement at the unfolding drama. Your other hand finds Mare's smooth gold hair, stroking softly. The shy dark elf makes a small happy sound, pressing close to your side.

You murmur, just loud enough for your group to hear. "Lets see how your new step-sister handle this."

Celestine stands beside the portal entrance like a lighthouse in a storm, violet eyes hard as diamonds, directing the evacuating flood of loyal subjects. "Guards first, form a perimeter on the other side. Civilians by family units, keep children close. Move quickly but don't push." Her voice carries over the rising tide of movement, maintaining control even as her world unravels.

The loyal guards surge through the silver gateway in disciplined columns, disappearing into the sunlit elven haven beyond. Families follow in clusters, mothers clutching infants, fathers herding older children, elderly supported by younger relatives. The portal's magic pulses with each passage, a soft chime marking successful crossings.

Darius sees his chance slipping away. He lunges forward with desperate speed, dagger raised, aiming for Celestine's exposed back.

The female guard with the scar, the one who first questioned him, intercepts with practiced efficiency. Her sword catches his wrist mid-strike, sending the dagger clattering across marble. Two more guards pile on, forcing him to his knees. Darius struggles violently, cursing in hoarse gasps.

"Traitor," the scarred guard spits. "How long have you been selling us out?"

Darius's face twists with rage and fear. "You're all fools! That portal is a trap! She's leading you to slavery worse than anything the orcs would do!"

Celestine turns slowly, violet eyes cold as winter ice. "Then prove your loyalty. Walk through yourself."

"I won't abandon my post," Darius snarls, but his voice cracks on the last word.

The portal's barrier flares suddenly, a translucent wall of force materializing between Darius and the gateway. The dungeon recognizes disloyalty instantly, visibly rejecting him before he even attempts passage.

A collective gasp ripples through the remaining evacuees. Count Dravis tries to edge toward a side exit, but loyal guards block his path. Baron Helwick sinks to his knees, face buried in his hands. Viscountess Selene stands frozen, beautiful features twisted with terror.

Celestine raises her voice, projecting across the throne room. "All collaborators will remain here to face the consequences they planned for the rest of us. Guards, secure them in the dungeon cells. They can explain themselves to their orc allies when the walls fall."

The evacuation continues with renewed urgency. Civilians who had hesitated now press forward eagerly, the loyalty barrier's judgment serving as perfect validation. Those who pass through vanish into golden sunlight and pristine forests. Those who cannot stand frozen in small clusters, realizing their treachery has been laid bare.

Thirty minutes pass in organized chaos. The flood of evacuees gradually thins to a trickle, then individuals, then small groups of stragglers who had been sheltering in distant corners of the city. Guards drag the thirteen confirmed traitors toward dungeon stairs, their protests and pleas echoing off stone walls.

Finally, the throne room stands nearly empty. Only Celestine remains beside the portal, platinum hair disheveled, white raiment touched with dust and sweat. She turns to face you directly, violet eyes meeting yours with exhausted determination. "Six thousand five hundred and twelve souls saved," she says quietly. "Thirteen traitors exposed. One city abandoned." She draws a shaking breath. "I'm ready to cross now. Unless you have further instructions."

You step forward and settle into the throne, Aura pulls your hand back to her head, your fingers continue absently threading through her hair while Mare presses close to your other side. "There's nothing required of you now," you say calmly. "I'll have Aura or Mare bring you to the Nazarick throne room tomorrow. You can either join your people or stay at my side and watch."

Celestine's shoulders sag with visible relief. She draws a shaking breath, then another. "Thank you. I... I need to see them settled first. Make sure they understand what's happened." She turns toward the massive portal, white raiment trailing behind her as she steps through into golden sunlight. The gateway closes slowly behind her with a soft, final chime.

The throne room is silent except for the distant roar of the besieging army surging through the open gates, unaware the city they came to conquer is already empty of its prize, now something waits for them.

You shift your attention to Gabriel, who stands slightly apart from your group, twelve wings folded tight around herself. Her violet eyes watch you with that analytical intensity that hasn't diminished despite her recent claiming.

"Gabriel," you say conversationally, "the goblins, orcs and traitors are living creatures, each one doing what they think they need to survive and live well. At what point does a choice for cruelty void Heaven's blessings? They have committed horrors across this world and intended to commit them here."

Gabriel's expression doesn't change, but her wings shift slightly. "Heaven's doctrine holds that all souls possess potential for redemption through genuine repentance. But the Codex also authorizes judgment when mercy would enable greater harm. The besieging forces chose to pursue conquest through systematic violation. That choice carries consequences." Her voice remains level, theological rather than emotional. "You hold administrative authority now. The judgment is yours to make."

"Oriax," you call, voice carrying across the empty throne room.

The silver-haired devil maid steps forward smoothly, crimson eyes attentive. "Yes, Master?"

"Seal the city after the enemy army finishes entering. We're celebrating our first intentionally saved community." You pause, letting the weight of the order settle.

"Exterminate them all."

Oriax's expression doesn't change, centuries of perfect service showing in her immediate acceptance. "Understood. I'll coordinate with the dungeon's defensive systems to ensure complete containment."

Grayfia speaks from beside her mother, voice clinical. "Shall I assign Pleiades support for the operation?"

"Not necessary," Oriax replies smoothly.

Aura bounces excitedly, red eyes bright. "Can we play with the orcs first? I wanna test my new bow on something big!"

Mare flinches slightly but nods. "We'll... make sure no one escapes..."

You turn to Ikaros, who has remained perfectly still throughout the entire exchange. Her pink hair frames emerald eyes that watch you with that characteristic blank expression, wings folded against her back. "Ikaros, will you sit on my lap to guard me while your sisters have fun?"

She moves immediately, crossing the distance in three steps and settling onto your lap with mechanical precision. Her weight is slight, her body perfectly still as she positions herself to face outward. One hand rests on your chest, the other hanging loose at her side. "Guarding Master," she says softly, her voice carrying that flat affect that marks her emotional sealing. "Systems optimal. No threats detected."

You settle one hand on her waist to keep her close, too soon for her new mentality to see the violence that will follow.

Albedo watches from her position beside the throne, golden eyes gleaming with satisfaction at the display. "A fitting celebration for our first intentionally saved community."

Jibril's wings flutter once, amber eyes analytical. "The tactical data from this extermination will be valuable for future operations."

Oriax bows once then turns. silver light flares around her as she prepares, her centuries of combat experience already calculating optimal extermination patterns for the besieging forces currently entering the doomed city.

The throne room settles into expectant silence, waiting for the celebration to begin.
