Chapter 42
Ysanne Caldrith struck the arm of her chair with the flat of her palm. The sound cracked through the council chamber like a gavel blow. She had always thought of herself as the head of the Triumvirate, and in moments like this, she behaved as though the thought alone made it true.
“Which man?” Elowen Virex replied mildly, folding her hands atop the table of sealstone. “There are enough damnable ones in the realm to choose from.”
Sereth Maelor did not speak. She never rushed to. Unlike the other two, she did not need to announce authority. She was the Veil—the keeper of belief, of fear, of meaning. If the Crown had a heart, it beat where she sat.
“That Tanim,” Ysanne snapped. “A feud—not even properly married—and already he is in a feud!”
Elowen’s mouth twitched. “To be precise, Matron, the feud was declared against him.”
Sereth exhaled softly, as though weary. “And hardly by his hand. Whoever they were came at night. They kidnapped him. They killed Crown guards. Then they attempted to flee.”
She turned her gaze, slow and penetrating, toward Ysanne.
“If he had not survived,” Sereth continued, “we would not be having this conversation.”
Ysanne’s fingers tightened. “Survival does not excuse consequence.”
“Nor does it assign guilt,” Elowen said evenly. “Do we even know how the feud was accomplished?”
“No,” Elowen answered her own question before Ysanne could. “We do not.”
She lifted a slate etched with sigils. “What we know is this: we have been tasked with monitoring a feud between a single unblooded man and an entity of considerable means.”
Ysanne scoffed. “Which makes him even more damnable.”
Before Sereth could respond, the air itself tightened.
Light unfolded in the chamber—not flame, not spell, but something colder and more precise. Words formed in clean, uncompromising script, hovering before them.
SYSTEM UPDATE
Feud Status Change
House: Tanim
Action Recorded: Hostile force engaged and defeated.
Casualties attributed to household head: • Three hostile humans • Two hostile mounts
Outcome: A first victory in the Blood Feud has been secured.
Feud Effects Updated: Fiancées assigned as primary supporters in conflict.
The words faded.
Silence followed.
Ysanne stared at the empty space where the notice had been, her face pale with restrained fury.
Elowen closed her eyes once. “That was… fast.”
Sereth’s lips curved—not into a smile, but something close enough to be mistaken for one.
“Oh my,” she murmured, a gleam of something sharp and delighted flickering in her eyes. “It seems the System has decided.”
She leaned back, folding her hands.
“The man is not merely a problem,” Sereth said softly. “He is a story now.”
Ysanne’s voice was tight. “Then we must control how it ends.”
Sereth inclined her head. “Or decide who survives it.”
The Crown chamber fell quiet once more, but this time the silence carried weight.
Somewhere far away, a man who had never asked for any of this took another step into legend—whether he wished to or not.
