Chapter 119: Gurkinn, the Sage of Mega Evolution
"No wonder this place is so huge. So it used to be a castle."
"Ponii, ponii ao~~"
The Pokémon curiously looked around as well.
Victini and Magearna were relatively calm, since both had once served kings and queens of their respective nations.
Ogerpon, however, looked exactly like a country bumpkin entering the city for the first time, gasping in amazement nonstop.
"Master, we're here."
Korrina brought Sora to an enormous indoor training hall.
All kinds of training equipment were arranged throughout the area.
Perhaps because it was already late at night, none of the martial artists Korrina mentioned were present.
Only an elderly man with distinctive eyebrows sat cross-legged in meditation.
"Grandpa, I'm back!"
Korrina skated over on her rollerblades.
"You'd never guess what I encountered this time."
"So noisy as always. I wonder when you'll finally grow out of that personality."
Gurkinn shook his head helplessly.
He truly had no way of dealing with this overly energetic granddaughter.
"Since you brought a guest home, why didn't you arrange accommodations for him first?"
"I was the one who asked Korrina to bring me here to meet you, Elder."
Sora approached at an unhurried pace, his steps calm and steady as he explained Korrina's behavior.
"And you are?"
Gurkinn examined Sora carefully, somewhat unable to determine the young man's background.
A Gym challenger?
Or perhaps a martial artist seeking apprenticeship?
"My name is Sora—"
"He's my master!"
Korrina loudly announced:
"A legendary trainer who has stepped into the Martial Hall and mastered the legendary Divine Arts!"
Sora's eyes widened.
He very much wanted to rush over and knead the little girl's cheeks while telling her to stop spouting nonsense.
Unfortunately, Gurkinn had already heard everything.
"A Hall-level martial artist?"
"Divine Arts?"
The old man slowly stood up, his expression growing solemn.
"I cannot simply pretend I didn't hear that."
Gurkinn was absolutely no ordinary person.
Across the entire Kalos region, in terms of seniority and reputation, he unquestionably stood among the very top.
Even the current Elite Four and Champion had once sought his guidance in their younger days.
And now, a mere sixteen- or seventeen-year-old youth dared claim he had entered the Hall?
The young man was severely underestimating what the Hall represented.
"I've already told Korrina several times that I'm really not that impressive."
Sora scratched his head awkwardly.
"But it's true that I accepted her as a disciple."
"Oh?"
Gurkinn was not the sort of villainous old man one saw in cheesy face-slapping videos.
He would never judge before verifying the facts.
Whether Sora possessed genuine skill or had deceived Korrina—
all of that would have to be tested through battle.
"Battle me, young man."
"Uh…"
Sora looked somewhat helpless.
"Elder, are you serious? It's already past ten at night."
"If you think it's too late and you're tired, we can postpone until tomorrow."
"No."
Since things had reached this point, Sora saw no reason to retreat.
"I'm just worried your body might not be able to handle it, Elder."
"Hahahaha…"
Gurkinn laughed heartily.
"At least in terms of character, young man, you are quite admirable."
"And in terms of strength, I won't disappoint you either, Senior Gurkinn."
"Then let us begin!"
Gurkinn clasped his hands behind his back.
"Follow me. We'll head to the Gym's largest battlefield."
"Since you've earned Korrina's acknowledgment, perhaps you can show this old man something interesting."
"Hm?"
Just as Gurkinn was about to lead the way, he suddenly stopped and turned around sharply.
His half-closed eyes instantly widened.
The old man's gaze bypassed Sora and landed on the figures behind him—
or more specifically, on Magearna.
"Magearna?"
"That… that's Magearna?!"
For the first time, the old man completely lost his composure.
"You actually possess the legendary Magearna?!"
Yes!!!
Seeing her grandfather shocked by Magearna, Korrina clenched her fists internally and screamed:
That's it! Exactly this reaction!
Perfect!
Why should she have been the only one traumatized?
Old man, accept your granddaughter's carefully prepared surprise!
"This child is indeed Magearna."
Sora's confirmation made Gurkinn suck in a cold breath.
"So the legends were true…"
"Magearna really exists…"
"Incredible. To think Elephas's mysterious science could achieve such a thing…"
Gurkinn no longer dared underestimate Sora.
The young man before him was absolutely extraordinary.
"Who exactly are you, sir?"
"Sora."
Sora once again introduced himself.
"Simply Sora."
"What a curious answer."
Gurkinn forcibly calmed himself.
"You mean that aside from your name, you possess no title worth spreading yet?"
"That's right."
Sora smiled.
"At present, I am still a nobody."
"A person who possesses Magearna will inevitably step onto the stage of the strong."
Gurkinn clenched his fist and glared dissatisfiedly at Korrina.
"You foolish girl."
"To bring such an honored guest home without notifying me beforehand—"
"That's not how I raised you!"
"It's called a surprise!"
Korrina grinned.
"Don't tell me Grandpa didn't like it?"
"You certainly managed to scare this old man half to death."
With Magearna standing before him in person, Gurkinn's excitement was no less than Korrina's.
It was precisely because he understood the nature of legendary Pokémon that he knew—
Kalos's future would absolutely have a place for Sora.
"Would it be possible to battle tonight, young man?"
Gurkinn said:
"Though this may be somewhat rude, this old man truly cannot suppress his anticipation for battling a strong trainer."
If Sora had been an ordinary person, Gurkinn would have simply sent out some level-fifty-something Pokémon.
A casual 3v3 would have settled the matter quickly.
But this was Magearna!
A trainer who possessed Magearna—how could Gurkinn possibly let such an opportunity slip by?
This demanded a full 6v6!
The only issue was…
Starting a full 6v6 battle in the middle of the night really was rather impolite.
At the very least, guests should normally be allowed to rest first.
"As long as your stamina can handle it, Elder."
Sora didn't mind at all.
"I'm ready to battle anytime."
"Hahaha!"
Gurkinn was beginning to genuinely appreciate Sora.
He discovered that his granddaughter actually had excellent judgment.
This young man's conduct and bearing suited the old man's tastes perfectly.
"Then this old man shall be rude."
"Please grant me a full six-on-six battle!"
