Chapter 394: Let Go of Me
Anne Sutton glanced at Ian. Seeing the little guy’s pitiful expression, she said, "If feeling sorry for a child is being ’unreasonable,’ then I’d rather be unreasonable! Even if you want him to learn, you should at least respect his wishes!"
Master Linden looked at Anne Sutton and said, "If it weren’t for Ian and Nathan, the Linden Family would never accept an ordinary woman like you!"
Anne Sutton looked at Master Linden and said, "In that case, it seems you have a better candidate in mind, Master Linden. Then you should just let someone else marry Nathan Fawcett!"
After saying her piece, Anne Sutton stood up.
Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "Anne!"
"Don’t try to stop me!" Anne Sutton said, then picked up Ian and walked out the door.
She had wanted to get along with them, but it was hopeless...
It seemed she wasn’t welcome in the Linden Family.
Master Linden had given her attitude from the very first time they met, and Anne Sutton was genuinely furious!
It wasn’t like she was a complete pushover.
Lana Langley saw this and said, "Look at you! How can you just walk out after a few words of criticism!"
’Anne Sutton is so audacious!’
’How dare she throw a tantrum in front of the Master!’
Nathan Fawcett stood up, glanced at Master Linden, and said, "Grandfather."
Master Linden looked at him and said, "I was already being very polite to her! What, she’s going to marry you, so I can’t say a few words to her? What other woman would be so bold?"
Nathan Fawcett glanced at the old man, said nothing, and turned to walk out the door.
Anne Sutton placed Ian in the car and looked at him. "Ian."
Ian looked at Anne Sutton and said, "Mommy, are we going home?"
As he spoke, his eyes were filled with light.
Anne Sutton looked at the little guy. ’Was it wrong of me to bring him out like this?’ she wondered.
But now, seeing his expectant expression, the burden on her heart lightened.
Anne Sutton said, "Let’s go see Grandma!"
"Okay!"
Just as Anne Sutton was about to start the car, Nathan Fawcett walked over. He opened the car door and looked at her. "Anne."
Anne Sutton looked up at him and said, "You saw it too. Your grandfather started it! If you hadn’t been there today, who knows what kind of things would have been said about me! I told you again and again that I don’t want to get married! But you wouldn’t listen! Now it looks like I’m desperate to marry into your family!"
’If we weren’t getting married, would there be all this damn trouble?’
Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "I’ll take you home."
"No, thanks." Anne Sutton looked at him, her expression full of resistance. "I don’t want to see you right now. I’m going to take Ian back to see my mom first."
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett said, "Alright then. Ian, take good care of Mommy."
Ian nodded. "Okay."
Nathan Fawcett didn’t go with them. He just said to Anne Sutton, "Be careful on the road. Drive slowly."
Anne Sutton said, "I know."
Anne Sutton took Ian home. Not long after they arrived, Mrs. Sutton came back as well.
Because she had only just started to recover and wasn’t fully well yet, Mrs. Sutton wasn’t staying at the shop until late at night like she used to.
Seeing Anne Sutton and Ian return today, she smiled. "Ian’s back!"
"Hi, Grandma."
Mrs. Sutton walked over, looked at Anne Sutton, and asked, "What’s wrong? Weren’t you supposed to be at the Linden Family’s place tonight? I thought you weren’t coming back."
Anne Sutton said, "No, it’s nothing. Ian said he wanted to see you, so I brought him over."
"Did you get in a fight with Nathan Fawcett?" Mrs. Sutton asked, looking at Anne Sutton sharply.
Hearing her mother’s words, Anne Sutton’s expression stiffened for a moment before she denied it. "No."
But Mrs. Sutton could already confirm her suspicion from her daughter’s reaction. "What happened? Did he make you angry again!"
"No," Anne Sutton said. "I’m just fed up! I don’t want to marry him, and I don’t even want to talk about getting married!"
’He’s the one who kept insisting they be together, insisting she marry him.’
...
’Now, Master Linden’s attitude just confirmed that not marrying Nathan Fawcett was the right choice.’
’For her, the Linden Family was far too prominent.’
’If she got together with Nathan Fawcett, it would be hard for others not to think she was marrying up.’
’She could live her own life just fine, so why did she have to get entangled in his world and suffer all sorts of humiliation!’
’It was just like today’s situation. She couldn’t just let his grandfather insult her however he pleased for the sake of marrying Nathan Fawcett!’
Mrs. Sutton said, "If you don’t want to get married, then don’t! Whatever you decide now, I’ll support you."
’She used to think that Anne Sutton had to find another man to marry, to have a good home, so she could finally rest easy.’
’But now it seemed...’
’That wasn’t necessary at all!’
’As long as she was happy, that was all that mattered!’
Anne Sutton said, "Mom, I’m just glad you’re willing to support me! To be honest, I have no interest in marriage at all. I was just afraid you’d worry, so I always wanted to put your mind at ease."
Mrs. Sutton said, "I’m quite happy on my own at the shop every day now. Watching the customers increase and business get better and better, I’ve realized that a person’s life really isn’t just about revolving around a man! I can do so many things, and I have so much time that’s my own. I think I’m starting to understand why you don’t want to get married!"
"Mom, I’m so glad you’re able to see it that way now."
’For a while, Anne Sutton had thought that her mother might never understand her, that she would never change her views.’
’And yet now...’
’After everything that had happened, her mother’s attitude had changed so much!’
’Perhaps because of her mother’s support, Anne Sutton now felt a new sense of confidence in her decision not to marry!’
...
That night, Anne Sutton put Ian to sleep and lay in bed herself, staring at the ceiling. She hugged her pillow, lying alone, and was just about to doze off.
Her phone rang.
She glanced at it. It was a call from Nathan Fawcett.
Anne Sutton answered, "What do you want?"
Nathan Fawcett said, "Come down and open the door for me."
"What are you doing here?" Anne Sutton said. "Didn’t I tell you not to come?"
Nathan Fawcett said, "Hurry up, it’s cold out here! I’m not wearing much."
It was spring, and while there was sun during the day, the temperature at night was still quite low.
Anne Sutton got out of bed, went downstairs, and opened the door to see Nathan Fawcett standing at the entrance.
She looked at him and asked, "Can’t you get in yourself? It’s not like you don’t know the passcode. Why didn’t you just come in?"
’He had the passcode for the front door lock!’
’She had been half-asleep and hadn’t realized.’
’Only now did it occur to her that he’d made her come all the way down for nothing!’
Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "I was afraid you wouldn’t let me in, so I had you come open the door for me."
"Aren’t you a genius? I was already asleep, and you made me come all the way down here."
Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "It’s fine, I’ll carry you upstairs!"
"Carry me? You think you can lift me?" Anne Sutton shot the man a look.
Nathan Fawcett looked at her, then scooped her up directly into a princess carry. "How much do you even weigh? How could I possibly not be able to carry you? See? Easy."
As Nathan Fawcett carried her through the door, Anne Sutton said, "Put me down! I get it, you can lift me."
