Chapter 60: The Truth Behind the Mask
The heavy silence of the VIP suite was finally broken by the soft clink of a glass. Akane had returned from the outer lounge, carrying a glass of cool, refreshing water. She stepped toward Mei, her movements as fluid and quiet as ever, and offered the glass with a gentle, supportive smile.
“Drink this, Mei,” Akane murmured. “It will help you feel more relaxed.”
Mei took the glass with a trembling hand, her eyes still red-rimmed but her gaze far more stable. “Thank you, Akane,” she whispered.
Seeing that Mei had finally calmed down, Akane stepped forward and gently took her hand, guiding her toward the private changing room and bathroom attached to the suite. “Come. Let’s get you cleaned up and into something more comfortable.”
As Mei and Akane disappeared behind the sliding door, Jun remained on the sofa, his expression thoughtful. He had just witnessed a side of Mei that few in the world—perhaps only a handful of people in her entire life—had ever seen. He had seen the cracks in the armor, and more importantly, he had seen the woman beneath the title of “Triad Heiress.”
A soft knock sounded at the door. The manager entered, carrying a neatly folded set of clothes. She didn’t ask if he needed anything; she simply stepped forward and placed the garments on the table.
Jun looked at the clothes and then at the manager, a flicker of curiosity crossing his face. “How did you know I needed a change of clothes?” he asked. “I didn’t mention anything about the stain.”
The manager let out a small, melodic laugh, a playful glint in her eyes. She paused for a moment, her gaze sweeping over Jun. She didn’t just look at the stain; she looked at him. She noticed the slight, heavy dilation of his pupils, the way his breathing was still just a fraction too deep, and the specific, flushed warmth radiating from his skin—the unmistakable, lingering “afterglow” of a man who had just exerted himself in a very specific way.
“Let’s just say it’s a lady’s secret, Prime Jun,” she replied, her voice trailing off with a suggestive hint. “A man might think he’s hiding his tracks, but to a woman’s eye, the signs are written all over you. The scent of a woman’s arousal, the way your muscles are still humming from the tension… it’s a language we speak fluently. Some things are simply obvious to the trained eye, especially when the evidence is literally clinging to your chest.”
She let her gaze linger on the crimson spot on his shirt for a second longer than necessary, her smile widening. “And let’s be honest, with a man of your… reputation… we tend to be extra attentive to the details. You’re better off not asking for the specifics, unless you’d like a full lecture on the physiology of passion.”
She gave him a knowing smile and a playful wink, her eyes twinkling with a mixture of professionalism and feminine mischief, before turning and gliding out of the room. She left Jun standing there, slightly stunned, wondering exactly how much of his private life was transparent to the women around him.
Jun stood up and began to change. He stripped off the stained white shirt and stepped out of his trousers, his athletic physique momentarily exposed in the dim light of the suite.
At that exact moment, the door to the changing room slid open. Mei and Akane stepped back into the main area. Mei had changed into a stunning, deep purple one-piece dress that hugged her curves and highlighted her long, model-like legs. She looked every bit the elegant heiress, but her expression was a mixture of shyness and sheer panic.
Her gaze landed on Jun, and she froze. Her heart skipped a beat, then began to hammer against her ribs. Seeing him standing there, bare-chested and powerful, sent a surge of heat through her body. She felt a sudden, dizzying rush of arousal, but it was coupled with an intense feeling of embarrassment. She had just poured her heart out to him, and now she was seeing him in his most raw, masculine state.
Mei stood rooted to the spot, her face flushing a deep, burning crimson. She wanted to look away, but she couldn’t. She was mesmerized by the definition of his muscles and the calm confidence in his eyes.
Akane, noticing Mei’s paralysis, let out a tiny, amused huff. With a sudden, playful movement, Akane stepped forward and gave Mei a firm push from behind.
“Oof!” Mei gasped as she was propelled forward, losing her balance and crashing directly into Jun’s bare chest.
Jun caught her instinctively, his strong arms wrapping around her to keep her from falling. At the same time, Akane leaned in from the other side, pressing her own shoulder against his chest. Mei felt the heat of his skin, the hardness of his muscles, and the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart. Her heart felt as if it might stop beating entirely. She was sandwiched between the two women she had once viewed as competitors, all of them pressed against the man who had become her world.
After a moment, Jun finished dressing, pulling on a fresh set of clothes. The three of them settled onto the large, plush sofa, the atmosphere shifting from charged tension to a heavy, intimate quiet.
Mei took a deep breath, her fingers tracing the fabric of her purple dress. She looked at Jun, her eyes searching his. “I… I want to tell you the truth,” she began, her voice small. “About my life. About why I am the way I am.”
Jun shifted, giving her his full attention. “I’m listening,” he replied softly.
“In the Triads, trust isn’t a luxury; it’s a liability,” Mei explained, her voice regaining some of its strength. “Betrayal is the only constant. I grew up in a world where your own siblings would sell your secrets to a rival family just to secure a higher position in the hierarchy. I was trained from the moment I could walk to be suspicious. I was taught that showing weakness was an invitation for an attack. If you cried, you were weak. If you trusted, you were a fool.”
She looked down at her lap, her expression clouded. “The competition for the position of heir was… brutal. I had to fight for every inch of respect I earned. I had to be the coldest, the smartest, and the most ruthless. I spent years building a wall around myself, thinking that if I just stayed detached, I could survive.”
Mei’s voice trembled slightly as she reached the most painful part of her story. “Before I came to the Academy, I had a childhood companion. I thought she was the one person I could truly trust. But she was a spy for my sister. She spent years feeding information about my weaknesses to my enemies. When the time came to decide who would represent our family at the Academy, there was a gang fight… a struggle for power. My group won, but the betrayal left a scar that never truly healed.”
She looked up at Jun, a tear glistening in her eye. “To be honest, I hate it. I hate the fighting, the suspicion, and the constant need to be on guard. In my heart… I just want to read romance novels and lay around all day, tasting various foods and being pampered. I want a life where I don’t have to be a leader.”
Jun didn’t interrupt. He waited until she finished, then reached out and pulled her into a warm, protective hug, his arm wrapping around her waist. He leaned in and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead.
“Then be that person here,” Jun murmured, his voice filled with a genuine tenderness. “At least when you’re in my house, you can leave the Triad heiress at the door. You don’t have to be strong for me, Mei. You can just be you.”
He pulled back slightly, looking her in the eyes. “And for the record, I like this version of you even more. You’re not just a strategic partner; you’re cute when you’re being honest.”
Mei’s face exploded in a blush, her heart leaping in her chest. She had spent her whole life hiding her “weaknesses,” only to find that the very things she feared were the things Jun loved most about her. For the first time in her life, she felt truly seen—and completely accepted.
But as the tension broke, Jun’s lips curled into a small, mischievous smirk. He reached out, lightly pinching her cheek with a playful flick.
“Though, I have to say,” Jun teased, his voice dropping into a playful, sing-song tone, “I didn’t expect the ‘Cold Empress of the Triads’ to be such a little crybaby. I wonder what the others would think if they saw you right now—blushing like a schoolgirl and clinging to me for dear life.”
Mei gasped, her face turning an even deeper shade of crimson. She tried to pull back, her “Triad Heiress” instincts attempting to reassert themselves, but she found she didn’t actually want to move. “I am not… a crybaby!” she protested, though her voice lacked any real conviction.
“Mm-hmm,” Jun hummed, his eyes twinkling. “Keep telling yourself that. But I think I like this ‘crybaby’ version of you. It makes me want to see just how many more tears I can squeeze out of you before you completely melt.”
Beside them, Akane watched the interaction with a warm, maternal glow. She stood in the periphery, her arms crossed, a soft smile playing on her lips. She didn’t say a word, but her gaze was full of affection. She had spent her life serving a woman who had to be strong for everyone else, and seeing Mei find that same release in Jun’s arms filled her with a profound sense of peace.
Akane noticed the way Mei’s posture had changed—the rigidity was gone, replaced by a soft, leaning vulnerability. She saw the way Mei looked at Jun, not as a tool for power, but as a sanctuary. Akane felt a quiet surge of pride for both of them; Jun for his ability to break through the toughest walls, and Mei for having the courage to let him in.
Mei looked from Jun’s teasing smirk to Akane’s supportive gaze, and for the first time in years, the weight of her legacy felt light. She leaned her head back against Jun’s chest, a small, genuine smile finally touching her lips.
“I suppose… I can be a little bit of a crybaby,” Mei whispered, her voice soft and contented. “But only for you.”
