Chapter 45: The Shadow of Jun’s Mom
The atmosphere in Jun’s study had shifted from the cold, strategic tension of the agency call to something more domestic, though no less charged. Sora, Akane, and Mei were now seated, their presence filling the room with a mixture of elegance and quiet observation. Jun sat behind his desk, his expression neutral, though his eyes remained sharp.
Hana, however, was not sitting. She was wandering.
She drifted around the perimeter of the study, her eyes darting from the bookshelves to the drawers of the mahogany desk. She looked like a cat on a hunt, her movements erratic and suspicious.
“Hana,” Jun said, his voice flat. “What exactly are you doing?”
Hana jumped, nearly tripping over her own feet. She looked at him, her face a mask of feigned innocence, though her eyes were shimmering with a mischievous glint. “Oh, nothing! Just… checking the decor! Your study is so… masculine!”
Jun’s eye twitched. He knew that look. He remembered the “care packages” Hana had tried to slip into his belongings before he arrived at the Academy—carefully placed, high-resolution photos of herself in various states of undress, ranging from “suggestively dressed” to “completely naked.” She had thought she was being subtle, planting “reminders” of her beauty to ensure he wouldn’t look at other women.
Without a word, Jun reached out and gripped her ear, pulling her closer with a firm, playful tug.
“Ow! Oppa!” Hana squeaked, her face scrunching up.
“Stop looking for them,” Jun said, his voice laced with amusement. “I left those useless items back in Korea. I gave them all to my mother.”
Hana’s world effectively stopped. Her jaw dropped, and she let out a strangled gasp of horror. “You… you GAVE them to your mom?! Why?! Why would you do that?!”
“She’s the one who manages the family’s legacy,” Jun replied, releasing her ear. “I figured she’d be the best person to archive them. Besides, she appreciates the… artistic effort you put into them.”
Hana looked crestfallen, her shoulders slumping. The thought of Eunha possessing those photos was a nightmare. While Eunha was a warm woman to those she loved, she was also a legendary figure in her own right, a former Academy alumna who possessed a terrifying, sharp intuition. When it came to Jun, Eunha was not just a mother; she was his fiercest protector. She was known to be a “devil” in the domestic sphere, capable of a sermon that could make the strongest woman crumble. If Eunha had seen those photos, Hana knew she was in for a lecture that would last for an eternity—a detailed breakdown of “modesty” and “propriety” delivered with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“I’m dead,” Hana whispered, her voice trembling. “I’m actually dead.”
Jun let out a small huff of laughter. “Stop being dramatic. She hasn’t called me yet, so I assume she’s still deciding which lecture to give you.”
Beside her, the other women were reacting in their own ways.
Sora leaned back, a small, elegant smile playing on her lips. She found the situation genuinely amusing. She had seen the “Nation’s Sweetheart” in all her glory, but seeing her reduced to a trembling mess by the mere mention of Jun’s mother was a delight. Poor Hana, Sora thought, though there was no pity in her gaze. She thinks she can play the seductive game, but she forgot that in this world, the matriarch always has the final say. Jun giving those photos to his mother isn’t just a joke; it’s a subtle reminder of who really holds the power.
Akane, usually the stoic observer, had to fight the urge to giggle. She had heard the stories of Eunha’s terrifying discipline. To Akane, the idea of the bubbly, possessive Hana being scrutinized by the legendary Eunha was a comedic masterpiece. She imagined the look on Hana’s face during that eventual “sermon,” and it made her heart lighten. Jun-sama is truly cruel, Akane thought with a hint of admiration. To give a girl’s secret desires to the most critical woman in the family… that’s a masterstroke of psychological warfare.
Mei Lin, meanwhile, watched Hana with a mixture of confusion and mild pity. She didn’t know Eunha personally, but she understood the weight of a matriarch’s judgment. She wondered what on earth could be in those photos to make a girl as confident as Hana look so utterly defeated. Is she really that terrified of a mother-in-law figure? Mei wondered. Or is it that she knows exactly how high the standards are for a Prime’s woman?
The three of them watched as Hana continued to mutter to herself, her face a mask of despair. The scene was a perfect microcosm of their current dynamic: Hana was the emotional spark, Sora was the amused observer, and Jun was the calm center of the storm, enjoying every second of the chaos he had created.
The room lapsed into a lighthearted silence before Jun shifted the conversation back to the matter at hand. “Now that you’ve all moved in,” he began, glancing at Mei and Hana, “is everything satisfactory? If you’re missing anything from your homes, let me know. You can buy whatever you need in the downtown district.”
Mei nodded, her expression calm. “Everything is in order, Jun. Thank you.”
Hana nodded quickly, still slightly shaken by the thought of Jun's mother. “Yeah, it’s great! Much better than my old room!”
Sora, ever the guide, stepped in to provide the necessary information. “Just a reminder,” she said, her voice returning to its professional, poised tone. “Next week is Orientation Week. Hana, Mei, and Akane, you’ll be attending the female-specific sessions. You’ll be introduced to the Academy’s social hierarchy, the reproductive health seminars, and the networking events with the other second-years.”
She paused, glancing at Jun. “The Prime Candidates and the other male students have their own separate orientation. It’s a more rigorous process, focusing on leadership and the expectations of the Progeny system.”
Hana immediately pouted, crossing her arms over her chest. “Why do we have to be separated?! I want to be with Jun-oppa! I need to guard him from more bugs!” She shot a pointed look at Sora, Mei, and Akane. “I’ve already got enough competition here. If he’s left alone with the other girls for a whole week, I’ll lose my mind!”
Jun looked at her, his expression unchanging. “I’m not interested in other girls, Hana. You’re worrying about things that aren’t an issue.”
Sora cleared her throat, a small, knowing smile on her lips. “While that may be true, Jun, don’t forget that your roster is still incomplete. You’re still missing your overseas selection—the non-Japanese, non-Korean, and non-Chinese slot. The Academy will be expecting you to make a decision on that soon.”
Jun leaned back in his chair, his gaze drifting toward the window. “I’ll think about it later,” he replied simply.
The meeting had reached its end. “You can all head back to your rooms now,” Jun announced.
As the girls stood up to leave, Jun called out, “Sora, stay a moment.”
Hana, who was already halfway to the door, froze. She tried to pivot, attempting to slip back into the room with a playful, “Oh, did you call me too, Oppa?”
Before she could make her move, Jun reached out and flicked her forehead with a sharp snap.
“Ow!” Hana rubbed her forehead, blinking in surprise.
“Go to bed, Hana,” Jun said, a hint of a smile on his lips. “This is about work tonight. You’re not needed for this part.”
Hana paused, a mischievous glint returning to her eyes. She leaned in and whispered, “Hehe… fine. But I’m doing a ‘night visit’ next time!”
With a final, playful wink, Hana skipped out of the room, leaving Jun and Sora alone in the quiet of the study.
