Chapter 165: A Dance At The Edge Of A Knife

Orion stares down at him, completely stunned into silence.

He looks at the fiery determination in Adrien’s eyes, the proud lift of his chin, and the total lack of hesitation in his posture. He’s so hard it hurts.

The boy who used to tremble with helpless rage when backed into a corner is gone. In his place stands a man who is actively choosing to step into the lion’s den, demanding his place right beside the most dangerous man in the city.

A slow shift occurs deep within Orion’s chest. The protective panic fades, replaced by an overwhelming surge of pride.

"You really want to come with me?" Orion asks softly, his thumb gently tracing the line of Adrien’s jaw. "Into that viper’s nest?"

"I’m not asking for your permission, pretty boy," Adrien says, a small, arrogant smirk breaking across his face. "I’m telling you I’m coming. So tell your people to change the flight plan."

Orion stares at him for another long second before a low, genuine laugh spills from his lips. He pulls Adrien tightly against his chest, burying his face in Adrien’s neck, breathing in his scent.

"God, you are incredible," Orion whispers against his skin, his arms wrapping around Adrien’s waist like iron bands. "All right, duckling. If you want to stand beside me, then not only will you stand by my side, I’ll leave the protection to you."

"Wait! I never said anything about that— "

Less than an hour later, the sleek black luxury jet tears down the private runway, lifting smoothly into the gray morning sky and setting its course toward Greece.

Inside the cabin, the atmosphere is quiet.

Cream leather recliners, polished dark wood accents, and soft ambient lighting fill the space. A flight attendant silently sets down two crystal glasses of iced water and a tray of light snacks before vanishing behind the privacy curtain near the cockpit.

Adrien sits by the window, watching the city below shrink into tiny, distant blocks before being swallowed entirely by a thick layer of white clouds.

Orion sits across from him, looking thoroughly relaxed.

He wears a tailored charcoal suit, his long legs stretched out, lazily swirling the water in his glass. The tension that had gripped him earlier seems to have vanished completely, replaced by his usual calm, effortless confidence.

Adrien leans his head against the windowpane, turning his gaze back toward Orion.

"So," Adrien begins, his voice casual. "What exactly should I expect from this meeting? Is Lady Dimitra going to have armed guards standing at the door, or is she going to sit at the head of a massive dining table like some queen?"

Orion smiles faintly, taking a slow sip of his water. "A bit of both, honestly. My aunt loves her dramatic setups. She believes atmosphere is half the battle when it comes to intimidating people. She will likely be sitting in her study, flanked by whatever poor soul with a drop of Vassilis’ blood she can manage to drag out of their comfortable lives."

"Sounds lovely," Adrien remarks dryly. "And who else is going to be there to welcome us?"

Orion tilts his head back against the leather headrest, his dark eyes gleaming with quiet, unreadable amusement. "Well, my aunt will be there, of course. And... you will most likely get to see Leon again."

Adrien stops midway through reaching for his glass of water.

His hand freezes in mid-air. He blinks, slowly retracting his hand as he sits up straight, staring across the small table at Orion.

"Leon?" Adrien asks, his eyebrows drawing together in instant shock and confusion. "What do you mean, Leon? You’ve been looking for Leon this entire time! You said that you had no idea where he vanished to after everything went down!"

To Adrien’s knowledge, Leon had disappeared completely after coordinating the initial kidnapping at the church— before Masamune hijacked the drop point and dragged Adrien away.

Adrien had assumed Leon was hiding out somewhere in total secrecy, terrified of the fallout, and that Orion’s men were actively scouring the globe trying to track the cousin down.

Orion raises an eyebrow, an easy, unbothered expression on his face. "Have I really been looking for him, duckling?"

Adrien stares at him, his heart suddenly picking up its pace against his ribs. "Orion... what are you talking about? He was the one who set up the trap at the church! I thought you were hunting him down to rip him apart!"

Orion sets his crystal glass down on the wooden table with a quiet, sharp click. He leans forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees, his eyes fixed on Adrien with a terrifyingly calm expression.

"And why would I spend precious time hunting someone down when I already knew exactly where he was hiding?" Orion asks softly.

Adrien’s breath hitches. Cold sweat breaks out across his back as he processes the words.

"You... you knew where he was?" Adrien whispers, leaning forward, his voice tight with raw disbelief. "You knew where Leon was this whole time?"

"Of course I did," Orion says smoothly, as if discussing something completely trivial. "Leon circled back to his mother after the kidnapping got hijacked by Masamune. He has been cowering inside Lady Dimitra’s estate in Greece for the past few days."

Adrien stares at him, his brain struggling to comprehend the depth of what Orion is saying.

"You knew he was with your aunt..." Adrien stammers, his brown eyes wide. "And you didn’t go after him? You didn’t tell me? We’ve been sitting in your mansion, and all this time, you were keeping tabs on him without saying a single word?"

Orion lets out a low, quiet hum, leaning back in his chair once more and crossing his legs with elegant ease.

"Because a frightened mouse hiding under its mother’s skirt is not a threat, Adrien," Orion explains gently, his tone chillingly soft. "If I had stormed my aunt’s estate the moment Masamune’s mess was cleared, Lady Dimitra would have moved Leon to another safe house overseas."

"But by staying silent, by letting them think I was completely occupied with you and the media scandal, I kept them both right where I wanted them."

Orion turns his head slightly, looking out the airplane window at the endless expanse of white clouds, a tiny, smile touching the corners of his lips.

"I let Leon sit, drowning in his own guilt and paranoia. I let my aunt believe she was playing a grand game of chess by keeping her son hidden behind her skirts. I let them build up their little defense, waiting for the exact moment she would get impatient and summon me."

Orion turns his gaze back to Adrien, his eyes deep and soulless as ever.

"My aunt summoned me to Greece today thinking she holds the upper hand," Orion continues softly. "She believes she is luring me into her web to negotiate for her son’s life and the family’s shares. She has no idea that I have been watching every breath Leon takes in that house."

Adrien sits completely frozen in his seat.

The hum of the jet’s engines fills the quiet cabin, but to Adrien, the world has gone dead silent.

He looks across the small table at his husband.

Minus the manic glint in his eyes, minus the explosive, unhinged rages, and minus the absurdly possessive, lunatic persona Orion wears when he’s chasing Adrien... Orion Vassilis is a terrifyingly calculative monster.

Adrien feels a cold, prickling sensation wash down his spine as the full weight of the truth settles into his mind.

Orion was never out of control. Not for a single second.

Behind the dramatic obsession, behind the unhinged threats, and behind the lazy, hedonistic mornings spent lavishing Adrien with affection in the shower, Orion has been step-for-step ahead of everyone.

His aunt, his cousin, the underground networks, and even Adrien himself— they were all moving along precise, invisible tracks that Orion had laid out long before Adrien even realized what was happening.

There are steps Orion has taken that Adrien has no idea about, secrets he holds that go far deeper than anything Adrien could have guessed.

Adrien swallows hard, his throat dry, his brown eyes wide as he continues to stare at the handsome, smiling man sitting across from him.

Orion catches his stare, his dark eyes softening instantly into that warm, adoration-filled look he only ever reserves for Adrien.

He reaches across the small table, gently taking Adrien’s cold hand in his warm palm, bringing it to his lips to press a soft, tender kiss against his knuckles.

"What is it, duckling?" Orion asks softly, his tone dripping with quiet affection. "You look like you’ve just seen a ghost."

Adrien doesn’t pull his hand away. He just looks at Orion, realizing with a weird kind of clarity that he has tied himself to a man whose mind is far more calculating and dangerous than he ever imagined.

And as the private jet cuts through the clouds toward Greece, Adrien simply breathes out, his voice barely a whisper against the hum of the engine.

"Nothing," Adrien says quietly, his fingers slowly tightening around Orion’s hand. "Just realizing how terrifying you actually are. You have to promise to never hurt me, Orion."

Orion only smiles, his luminous gaze sparkling with quiet playfulness.
