Chapter 212 213: The Soul Strike
Then, a third, smaller tentacle snaked forward. It gently pressed its slimy, suction-cupped tip directly against the center of Yoriichi's forehead.
The beast forcefully injected its massive Soul Power directly into Yoriichi's mind, dragging him into an inescapable, waking nightmare.
The world dissolved into a beautiful, sunlit field. Yoriichi found himself standing outside a small, wooden cabin. A woman with gentle eyes and a warm smile—Uta—walked out, cradling a small bundle wrapped in cloth. Beside her stood his brother, Michikatsu, smiling proudly. It was the absolute, perfect life he had been denied.
But before he could even reach out, the sky turned a sickening, blood-red.
Michikatsu's face morphed, growing six demonic eyes. A blade flashed. Uta fell, her blood soaking the grass. The baby's cries were silenced.
"No..." Yoriichi muttered in the real world, a muffled, pained sound escaping his lips in the dark water.
The illusion rapidly shifted. He saw his Hashira comrades—Rengoku, the Wind Hashira, the Stone Hashira—laughing around a fire. Then, in a blink, their bodies were torn apart, their corpses piling up at the feet of Muzan.
The emotional agony was excruciating. Yoriichi's stoic mind, perfectly disciplined against physical pain, began to fracture under the sheer weight of his deepest, darkest traumas.
Sensing its prey's mind breaking, the Trench Phantom Octopus grew bored. It slowly began retracting its tentacles, pulling the helpless, trapped human toward its massive, snapping beak.
But the illusion wasn't finished. The beast dug deeper into his current life.
The scene shifted to Wu Tan City. The Xiao Clan estate was engulfed in roaring flames. Yoriichi walked through the burning ruins. He saw the corpses of the Jia Lie and Ao Ba youths he had mentored. He saw Xiao Mei, her eyes lifeless.
Desperate, he dug frantically through the burning, collapsed wood of the main hall. He tore at the rubble until his fingers bled. Finally, he found a familiar hand. He pulled away the debris, revealing the crushed, lifeless bodies of Xiao Yu and his grandfather, Xiao Zhan.
They were all dead. He had failed to protect them again.
But as Yoriichi stared at the illusionary corpses of his new family, the despair did not consume him. Instead, it struck the absolute, bedrock foundation of his Dao Heart.
'I will not let this happen.'
A terrifying, primordial rage—not born of anger, but of an unyielding, absolute need to protect—exploded within the deepest recesses of his soul.
In the freezing water of the trench, Yoriichi let out a silent, furious roar, expelling the last of his oxygen in a massive cloud of bubbles.
His crimson eyes violently snapped open. They were glowing with a terrifying, ethereal white light. It wasn't Dou Qi. It was raw, untamed Soul Power, violently awakened by extreme psychological duress.
The sheer, explosive force of his willpower completely shattered the beast's mental invasion, severing the illusionary connection with a psychic snap.
The Trench Phantom Octopus recoiled, letting out a bubbly shriek of absolute shock. Its mental tether had been violently broken by a mortal! The backlash loosened the physical grip of the tentacles binding Yoriichi's arms for a fraction of a second.
It was all the time Yoriichi needed.
He was positioned mere feet away from the beast's massive, glowing head. Without Dou Qi to fuel a martial skill, and with his physical strength dwarfed by the monster, his survival instinct seized control of his newly awakened spiritual energy.
He thrust his right palm forward, aiming directly between the beast's glowing yellow eyes.
He channeled every ounce of his raw, heavy Soul Power into his palm, visualizing the strike not breaking flesh, but striking the very essence of the creature.
WHAM!
Yoriichi's palm collided with the slimy skin of the octopus. There was no physical shockwave. There was no displaced water.
Instead, a translucent, ghostly silhouette of the octopus was violently shoved backward, literally blasted out of the beast's physical body by the sheer, concussive force of Yoriichi's astral strike.
The Rank 4 beast's consciousness was completely detached from its vessel.
The massive Trench Phantom Octopus instantly went entirely limp. Its glowing eyes dimmed, and its dozens of tentacles uncoiled, drifting lifelessly in the dark currents. It was completely, utterly paralyzed.
Yoriichi drifted backward, his lungs burning with absolute agony, black spots dancing furiously at the edges of his vision. He looked at his own palm, his mind racing.
'I stunned its consciousness....' Yoriichi realized, a profound revelation hitting his exhausted mind.
But he knew it wouldn't last. A Rank 4 beast's soul was incredibly resilient. Already, he could see the ghostly silhouette rapidly snapping back into the physical body. Its massive eye twitched.
It was waking up.
Without a second of useless thought, Yoriichi turned and swam with everything he had left. His broken ribs screamed, but he ignored the pain, kicking furiously toward the faint, metallic outline of his cell.
He breached the iron bars just as his vision began to fade completely. He hauled his heavy, freezing body upward, violently wedging his legs and torso into his suspended perch near the ceiling, well above the rising waterline.
He collapsed against the iron, panting violently, drawing the damp cavern air greedily into his burning lungs.
Down in the dark water, the Trench Phantom Octopus fully regained its senses. It thrashed wildly, a mixture of intense anger, confusion, and genuine, primal fear gripping its mind.
It looked up at the isolated cell where its prey had hidden. It wanted to tear the iron bars apart, but it could sense the faint, repelling hum of the Law Enforcement arrays woven into the cage. More importantly, it remembered the terrifying, unnatural sensation of having its very soul struck from its body. It felt vulnerable for the first time in decades.
Deciding the strange, glowing-eyed human was far too dangerous and bizarre to consume, the beast let out a low, bubbling hiss and turned away, vanishing back into the pitch-black depths of the trench.
Yoriichi lay suspended in the dark, his heart slowly calming its frantic rhythm.
He had survived the apex predator. He had unlocked the hidden depths of his own soul. There were only five days left in the darkness, and he knew, with absolute certainty, that he would walk out of this purgatory fundamentally transformed.
