Chapter 387: He Xiao's Parents
Leng Yue stared out the window, lost in thought, and murmured to herself, He faced more than a dozen guns without fear. He's arrogant, but not someone who slaughters the innocent. He's also a former soldier who is so deeply loyal to his woman… Zhao Dong… you've actually made me a little curious…
「Meanwhile.」
Zhao Dong was completely unaware of what had happened after he left.
At the entrance to the Inspectorate Bureau, Zhao Dong saw He Xiao crouching on the ground. She was dressed in thin clothes, shivering uncontrollably as the bone-chilling wind battered her. Yet she seemed completely oblivious to the cold. She just squatted there crying, looking utterly miserable.
Zhao Dong rushed over and pulled her into his arms.
Startled by the touch, He Xiao quickly stood up. But when she saw it was Zhao Dong, she immediately threw herself into his embrace.
"Brother Dong, you're out!" she sobbed. "I thought I'd never see you again…"
"Silly girl, I promised to take you out for a feast, didn't I? How could I go back on my word?"
"Oh, Brother Dong..." she sobbed.
Tears in her eyes, He Xiao looked up. Her heart clenched painfully when she saw the wounds on his body.
"Brother Dong, does it hurt?" He Xiao gently touched the bruises on his body, her face a mask of anguish.
Zhao Dong patted his chest and reassured her, "It doesn't hurt. They're just minor injuries. I'm fine!"
"Brother Dong…" He Xiao's tears continued to stream down her face.
Seeing her like this, Zhao Dong was deeply moved. After a long while, once He Xiao's emotions had calmed, her phone rang.
Seeing the caller ID, He Xiao immediately stopped crying. She forcefully wiped the tears from her eyes and put on a smile before answering the call.
"Mom…" she said sweetly.
An elderly woman's loving voice came from the other end. "Xiaoxiao, are you doing well in the city?"
"Mom, don't worry, I'm doing great. I'm a big star now, living the good life. Every day is wonderful."
"That's good, that's good. Your father and I are so happy that our Xiaoxiao is so successful."
"Mom…" Hearing the old woman's voice, He Xiao's eyes turned red again. Afraid she might break down sobbing, she quickly said, "Mom, I have something to do, so I can't talk right now."
"Alright, alright, you go handle your business. Your dad and I are fine at home. We just missed you, so I gave you a call."
"Don't you worry about us. Just work hard and try to buy a big house in the city."
With that, the elderly woman hung up.
Staring at her phone, He Xiao couldn't help but burst into tears again.
"Brother Dong, did you know? I haven't been home in a year…" she choked out. "I'm such an unfilial daughter… I've let them down…"
Zhao Dong's heart ached for her. "If you miss them, why don't you go back for a visit?" he comforted.
"But…" He Xiao hesitated.
"No matter how hard life gets, your parents are the ones who love you the most," Zhao Dong said. "They don't actually expect you to provide them with a lavish lifestyle. All they really want is to see you. If you want to go back, I can go with you."
"Really?" He Xiao's face lit up with excitement.
"Of course." Zhao Dong smiled and stroked her forehead.
"Okay! Let's go back tomorrow!" He Xiao exclaimed, dancing with joy.
The wind was piercingly cold. Zhao Dong took He Xiao back to the hotel.
「Another night of passion.」
「The next day.」
Zhao Dong and He Xiao took a taxi and left the hotel early.
Half an hour later, the car drove into a run-down old residential complex on the outskirts of the city.
Looking at the surroundings, Zhao Dong asked in surprise, "How can your parents live here?"
He Xiao's expression immediately turned pained, and a sad, bitter smile formed on her lips.
"Brother Dong, do you think I'm terribly unfilial? I'm a big star, yet I let my parents live in a place like this…"
Zhao Dong fell silent. To be honest, that was exactly what he was thinking.
Seeing this, He Xiao sighed. "I've actually earned a lot of money over the years, but because I refused to agree to some of the agency's unreasonable demands, they often withheld parts of my pay. After all this time, very little of that money has actually ended up in my pocket…"
Hearing this, a surge of anger rose in Zhao Dong, and he felt another wave of pity for He Xiao. To put it bluntly, He Xiao had refused to be sexually exploited. On top of that, she had been tricked by Qiu Jia into signing an unreasonable contract. As a result, her entire income was essentially pocketed by the agency.
Zhao Dong wrapped his arms around He Xiao. "The past is in the past," he comforted her. "As long as I'm here, no one will dare bully you again."
Moved by his words, a happy smile spread across He Xiao's face. She didn't really believe Zhao Dong had the power to stop others from bullying her, but she knew he would definitely try. For a woman, what often matters isn't whether a man *can* do something, but whether he's *willing* to do it for her.
Zhao Dong was clearly a man who was willing to do it for her.
And that… was enough.
Ten minutes later, they stood before a rusty security door. Gazing at it, He Xiao's eyes grew red, and she began to tremble with sobs.
"It's not your fault. You've already been through so much," Zhao Dong said gently, stroking her back.
His words gave her courage. He Xiao nodded firmly, took a deep breath, and finally raised her hand to knock on the door.
The door opened to reveal an old woman with a hunched back. She was dressed in a worn, patched T-shirt. The moment she saw He Xiao, tears instantly welled up in her weathered eyes.
"Xiaoxiao… is it really you… Xiaoxiao…"
The old woman stood in the doorway, her voice choked with emotion, staring at the girl before her, unable to believe her eyes.
"Mom… it's me… it's me…"
Seeing the old woman, He Xiao's emotions completely broke down. She threw herself into her mother's arms and began to wail.
