Chapter 160: The Bias of Ji Xueyao
The subordinate was so terrified that tears welled in his eyes. "Yes! Chairman Ji's daughter is Ji Xueyao! She's the head of our Engineering Department!"
Feng Jie felt as if he had been struck by lightning. His face drained of all color, and he trembled as he looked at Ji Xueyao.
Feng Hui also screamed in fright, her face ashen. She nearly collapsed, her expression twisting in terror as she stared at Ji Xueyao.
Remaining calm, Ji Xueyao looked at Feng Jie and Feng Hui and asked coolly, "Do you know who I am now?"
Feng Jie collapsed onto the ground with a thud, his entire body trembling as he stared at Ji Xueyao. "Miss... Miss Ji," he stammered, "how... how could it be you?"
Ji Xueyao said indifferently, "And why couldn't it be me? You're Feng Jie, correct? As of now, you are relieved of your position as head of the demolition project. Furthermore, I will have the corporation launch an investigation into you today. If it's found you've committed financial crimes or embezzled company funds, you can prepare to spend the next eight to ten years in prison."
Feng Jie immediately dropped to his knees, tears streaming down his face as he choked out, "Miss Ji, I know I was wrong... I beg you, please, spare me just this once."
Feng Hui was also scared witless. She'd never imagined Zhao Dong could summon such a powerful figure. Her knees buckled and she knelt on the ground, sobbing, "Miss Ji, I beg you, give my son a chance! We know we were wrong..."
Ji Xueyao said coolly, "What use is admitting your mistake now? Besides, you don't truly feel you were wrong. You're just scared—scared of going to prison."
With that, she turned to Feng Hui and added, "You're also one of the people in charge of the demolition here, I hear. I will report this to your superiors for a thorough investigation. You should prepare yourself as well."
Feng Hui burst into tears. Suddenly, she turned and began crawling toward Zhao Dong on her knees. Grabbing his pant leg, she wailed, "Zhao Dong, Auntie knows she was wrong! Please, ask your friend to spare Auntie, won't you? I'm sorry, and I'm even more sorry to your parents. I never should have bullied them or tried to take your family's land. I'm shameless!" As she spoke, she began slapping her own face over and over, crying all the while.
Zhao Dong looked at Feng Hui and clicked his tongue. "Sorry, Auntie, but your act doesn't work on me. You and Feng Jie can go reform yourselves together in prison."
Just then, Ji Xueyao made a call. Soon, someone arrived and took Feng Jie away, followed by a group of uniformed officials who also took Feng Hui. After all, the Ji Family's influence was immense; a single call from Ji Xueyao could reach people in any department, and she had directly contacted Feng Hui's superior.
Soon, Feng Jie and Feng Hui were led away. The crowd of neighbors fell completely silent, everyone staring, dumbfounded by the scene. Bitter and regretful expressions slowly crept onto their faces. They were suddenly filled with regret, fear, and dread... They had insulted Zhao Dong, too!
Liu Meihua, in particular, lowered her head and tried to slink away, but Zhao Dong suddenly said, "Aunt Liu, did I say you could leave?"
Liu Meihua froze. She turned, fell to her knees with a thud, and blubbered, "Zhao Dong, Auntie knows she was wrong! Please... please don't hold this against me! I didn't take your family's land!"
Zhao Dong shook his head. "That's not good enough. Your mouth was the foulest just now; you were the worst of them all. Besides, do you think I don't know that you and your daughter, Wang Yan, used to bully my parents whenever I wasn't home? You'd dump your trash and dirty water at our courtyard gate just because you saw they were too honest to fight back. Well, since you don't have a job anyway, let's just say your daughter's job is over now too."
With that, Zhao Dong called Jiang Nianyu and told her to fire one of her employees, a woman named Wang Yan.
A moment later, Liu Meihua's phone rang. She answered, and Wang Yan's sobbing voice came from the other end. "Mom, the company just fired me!"
Liu Meihua was stunned. Her daughter had worked so hard to get that job, studying at home for over two years before finally passing the exam. It was because of her daughter's success that Liu Meihua always held her nose high in the air and looked down on everyone. Hearing this news, her vision went black, and she nearly fainted on the spot.
Ji Xueyao glanced around, then said thoughtfully, "To be honest, this area isn't essential for the demolition. The project can easily proceed by going around it, making the demolition here irrelevant. And now, I don't feel like tearing it down anymore. Zhao Dong, how about we just demolish your house and leave everyone else's for now?"
Zhao Dong was stunned, then laughed wryly. "Is there such a thing as demolishing just one house?"
Ji Xueyao smiled. "So, do you want it demolished or not?"
Zhao Dong laughed. "Class President Ji, I appreciate the thought, but my family doesn't want to demolish our house right now. We have a place to live, so let's just leave it for the time being."
Ji Xueyao smiled. "Alright then. We'll do as you say."
As soon as she spoke, a chorus of wails erupted from the surrounding neighbors. They crowded around her, their voices choked with tears.
"Miss Ji, you can't decide not to demolish! I've already sold off my old things, counting on the compensation money to get a new house!"
"That's right, Miss Ji! We've already spent a lot of money on gifts to get a better compensation package! You can't let it all be for nothing!"
"I've already put a deposit down on a new apartment! I was counting on the compensation to make the down payment. If there's no demolition, we'll lose our deposit! Miss Ji, please, have mercy! You can't just cancel it!"
Ji Xueyao said indifferently, "What does any of that have to do with me? Besides, no contracts have been signed. The decision is final: this area will not be demolished. Don't expect any compensation money. The matter is closed."
She then turned to Zhao Dong, a smile playing on her lips. "Zhao Dong, what do you think?"
Zhao Dong smiled faintly. "Whatever you decide, I support it."
"Okay, thanks for understanding," she replied with a gentle smile. "As for them... anyone who dares to bully you or make snide remarks won't get off easy with me."
Zhao Dong paused, gave Ji Xueyao a deep look, and then smiled.
"Well, I've come all this way to your home. Aren't you going to invite me in for a bit?"
Zhao Dong slapped his forehead. "Right, how forgetful of me. Please, come in! Come in and have some tea."
Welcoming Ji Xueyao inside, Zhao Dong closed the main door behind them.
In the main room, Zhao Kangyou and Zhang Cuimei looked at Ji Xueyao with excitement. They had never imagined their son could be friends with a young woman from such an influential background. The old couple were overjoyed. After serving Ji Xueyao a cup of tea, they found an excuse to step out, giving the two of them space to talk.
Ji Xueyao showed no distaste for the modest surroundings. She took a sip of tea, settled onto a wooden stool, and smiled at Zhao Dong. "This little courtyard of yours hasn't changed a bit."
Zhao Dong laughed. "Nope. It's been like this for years."
The words were barely out of his mouth when Zhao Dong realized something was wrong. He stared at Ji Xueyao. "What do you mean by that? Have you been here before?"
Ji Xueyao smiled faintly, a flicker of an unusual emotion in her eyes.
After a moment of silence, she chuckled softly. "I have indeed been here before."
Zhao Dong was astounded. "How could you have been here?"
Ji Xueyao bit her lip, a nostalgic smile touching her face. "What if I told you that back in our school days, I secretly followed you home once to see your house? Would you believe me?"
Zhao Dong's heart jolted. "Class President Ji... what are you trying to say?"
