Chapter 156: Drawing Lots to Feng Hui
Seeing the sorrow and helplessness on his parents' faces, Zhao Dong instinctively sensed something was wrong and asked, "Dad, Mom, what happened?"
Zhao Kangyou looked at Zhao Dong, not wanting his son to get involved. After all, Feng Hui's son was a manager at the big demolition company. He wasn't someone their family could afford to offend.
Thinking of this, Zhao Kangyou shook his head and said, "It's nothing, Dong. Don't ask."
Zhao Dong frowned. "Dad, this is our family's business. Why can't I know about it?"
Zhao Kangyou started to speak, but Feng Hui cut in with a chuckle. "Zhao Dong, let me tell you. Your parents want to take over the plot of land where I grow my flowers. Do you think that's right? You should convince your parents not to be so greedy."
Zhao Dong was stunned. He frowned and said, "Didn't you ask my family for that plot of land to grow flowers on? I clearly remember you coming over during dinner one night to ask for it. How did it become your land?"
Feng Hui's face instantly darkened. She forced a smile and said, "Dong, don't just spout nonsense. You must have misremembered, right?"
Zhao Dong was about to speak again, but Zhang Cuimei quickly grabbed his arm and gave him a warning look.
Zhao Dong frowned. "Mom, can't we even talk about this? She's the one who took our land. That land has always been ours, so why should her family get to occupy it?"
Zhang Cuimei said helplessly, "Dong, that's enough. Come back inside; I'll make you some food."
Zhao Dong shook off Zhang Cuimei's hand, looked at Feng Hui, and frowned. "Director Feng, are you saying you intend to take our land for good?"
Feng Hui's expression turned as dark as a stagnant pool. "Zhao Dong, stop spouting nonsense! Who saw me taking your land? Where's your proof?"
Zhao Dong sneered, "My parents trusted you, so they didn't ask you for a written note. I see you're planning on being a scoundrel about it now, is that it?"
Feng Hui said disdainfully, "That land was always mine, so stop talking nonsense. Besides, so what if I'm being shameless? What can you do about it?"
Zhao Dong's gaze turned frigid. He never expected Feng Hui could be so shameless.
Feng Hui looked at Zhao Dong and scoffed, "Don't give me that look. I'm not afraid of you. My son is much more useful than you. He's a manager now. What are you going to do?"
Zhao Dong sneered. "A manager? No wonder you're so fearless. So you're throwing your weight around because you have connections?"
Feng Hui sneered, "So what if I'm throwing my weight around? It's better than you. Look at you, completely useless! Oh, right. I heard you latched onto some sugar mama and bought yourself a nice car, didn't you?"
At this, the neighbors watching the commotion all began to murmur, their faces filled with malicious glee.
"So he's a kept man! No wonder he can afford such a nice car!"
"That's right. Didn't Zhao Dong just get out of the army? He doesn't even have a job. Where would he get the money for a car like that?"
"He's definitely a kept man! How shameless! He has no dignity at all. We might be poor and can't afford a car like that, but at least we don't resort to being gigolos! Unlike some people..."
Hearing the escalating gossip, Zhao Dong's expression turned glacial. He had heard them gossiping earlier, but he never thought they would become so vicious.
At that moment, Zhang Cuimei and Zhao Kangyou looked utterly dejected. Being older, they were terrified of gossip, public condemnation, and people pointing fingers behind their backs. If Zhao Dong was really like that, they wouldn't be able to show their faces in public. But the old couple trusted their son wasn't that kind of person.
Zhang Cuimei pulled Zhao Dong closer and said, "Dong, don't listen to them. Come back inside. I'm here."
Zhao Dong was touched. "It's alright, Mom. No one is taking this land today. And I'm going to shut these people's damn mouths!"
At his words, many of the gossiping neighbors grew agitated.
"Hey, Zhao Dong, what was that? Whose mouth are you calling foul?"
"Yeah, you think you're so great now, huh? Just because you came back from the army? You think anyone looks up to you?"
"Exactly! What's so great about being a measly soldier? My son just graduated and is already making over 10,000 a month. Not like you, who doesn't even have a job!"
Zhao Dong scanned the sneering faces in the crowd, memorizing each one. He then turned to Feng Hui and said coldly, "Director Feng, I advise you to move your flowers and return our land immediately. I'm giving you a chance to fix this, seeing as we've been neighbors for years. Otherwise, don't blame me for not being neighborly anymore."
Feng Hui said scornfully, "Wow, listen to him, acting all tough now that he has a sugar mama. Everyone, look! This is what they're really like! The parents try to steal my land, and now the son is threatening me. Tell me, what should we do?"
The neighbors immediately chimed in, "Director Feng, we're on your side! Let's see what his family can do!"
"That's right! He's just a veteran who thinks he can throw his weight around because he's a kept man. We'd like to see him try something!"
Feng Hui was delighted. She laughed and said, "It seems everyone here is a reasonable person. Don't you worry. When the demolition plans are made, I'll be sure to look out for you. As for the Zhao family... Heh, they can just wait!"
Zhao Dong smiled faintly. "Do you really think you're that powerful?"
Feng Hui rolled her eyes and looked Zhao Dong up and down with utter contempt. "So what if I am? My son is far more capable than you'll ever be. You think everyone is a freeloader like you? You're a joke."
The crowd burst into gleeful laughter. They had been green with envy over Zhao Dong's expensive car from the start. Why did he get to drive such a nice car when they couldn't? They refused to accept it! Now, the crowd finally felt like they were getting some satisfaction.
Zhao Dong dug at his ear and said indifferently, "I tried to be reasonable, but you refused. Don't blame me for what comes next. You'd better call your son over right now, or this isn't over."
Feng Hui scoffed, "My son, Feng Jie, happens to be inspecting the demolition area today. Let me tell you in advance: your house will never be part of the demolition. Your family can rot in this dump for the rest of your lives."
Zhao Dong gave a faint smile. "I'm afraid that's not for your family to decide. I'd like to see just how capable this son of yours really is."
Feng Hui shot Zhao Dong a disdainful glance, then pulled out her phone and made a call. "Hello, son? Can you come home for a minute...? Yes, there's a small problem. You'll see when you get here."
The call ended quickly. Feng Hui lifted her chin and sneered, "Just you wait. Your whole family is going to regret this day!"
Zhao Dong shrugged nonchalantly and turned to his parents. "Dad, Mom, go rest inside for a bit. I'll handle this. No one is taking our land."
Zhang Cuimei grabbed Zhao Dong, sighed softly, and said bitterly, "Dong, Feng Hui's son really does work for the demolition company. He's a junior manager there. If we offend them, they really might block our home from being demolished. And no matter what, I was hoping it would be, just so you could get the compensation money."
Zhao Dong comforted her, "Mom, the demolition doesn't matter. I don't need the money. But that land has always been ours. Why should the Feng family be allowed to just take it? I won't stand for it."
Zhao Kangyou said somberly from the side, "Dong, the Feng family has connections. They can probably alter the records. We might never get that land back. Maybe we should just let it go so we don't mess up the demolition."
Zhao Dong shook his head. "Dad, we can't spend our whole lives with our heads down, letting people walk all over us. I'm back now. No one is going to bully our family anymore. Just you watch."
Zhao Kangyou and Zhang Cuimei wanted to say more, but in the end, they could only sigh.
With that, Zhao Dong walked straight out of the small yard to the patch of land that had been turned into a flower bed. He started stomping, instantly destroying the plants!
Feng Hui charged out, and when she saw the scene, she shrieked, "Zhao Dong, you son of a bitch! How dare you touch my flowers! I'll kill you, you bastard!"
Feng Hui's greatest joy was tending to her flowers; they were her pride and joy.
Hearing Feng Hui's vile cursing, Zhao Dong's face turned grim. As she charged at him, he swung his hand!
SMACK!
Feng Hui shrieked in pain, spun around twice from the force of the blow, and collapsed on the ground. Half of her face was already swelling up.
The surrounding neighbors were stunned. One of them said angrily, "Zhao Dong, are you crazy? How dare you hit Director Feng? Do you have a death wish?"
Zhao Dong sneered. "She deserved it. Just because she's some director, she thinks she's God Almighty? She's nothing."
The crowd glared at Zhao Dong, then rushed over to obsequiously help Feng Hui to her feet.
Clutching her swollen cheek, Feng Hui shouted hysterically at Zhao Dong, "You bastard! You dare hit me?! Just you wait until my son, Feng Jie, gets here! He'll make you pay!"
Zhao Dong replied calmly, "Fine. I'll wait for him right here."
Feng Hui shrieked with fury. Being slapped in front of everyone was the ultimate humiliation! She had already decided: as soon as Feng Jie arrived, she would have him find people to teach Zhao Dong a brutal lesson!
「A short while later」
A black Mercedes pulled up outside the alley. Feng Jie, dressed in a suit and carrying a briefcase, stepped out of the car. Another car pulled up nearby, and several construction site supervisors scrambled out to accompany him.
Now that Feng Jie was a manager, he was naturally expected to maintain a certain image wherever he went.
Feng Jie smoothed his hair and strode confidently into the alley. From a distance, he could see the crowd gathered between his family's yard and Zhao Dong's.
