Chapter 61: Spare Your Dog's Life
A smile immediately brightened Huang Changsheng's face. "Qingyun, you're here. Please, have a seat."
Lin Qingyun's complexion was ashen. Her normally vibrant cheeks looked haggard from a sleepless night, and her bright, watery eyes had dimmed, now framed by dark circles. Even so, it couldn't hide her exceptionally beautiful features.
Lin Qingyun forced a smile. "President Huang, where is your friend? I want to ask about Zhao Dong."
This useless Zhao Dong, why does she care about him so much? Huang Changsheng cursed inwardly, though he obviously couldn't say it out loud.
"Don't worry, Qingyun. I've already called my friend to head back. He should be here soon. Have some tea first."
Huang Changsheng poured a cup of tea for Lin Qingyun. She accepted it but didn't drink. Noticing this, he simply smiled without saying anything. He took a seat opposite her, lit a cigar, and said with a faint smile, "Qingyun, do you really want to know what happened to Zhao Dong?"
Lin Qingyun grew agitated. "Yes... I want to know how he is right now. President Huang, please, I'm begging you to tell me."
Huang Changsheng shrugged. "I just don't get it. He's just a discharged soldier with no money and no power. How did you fall for him?"
Wringing her hands, Lin Qingyun said, "It's a long story... If you really want to know, I can tell you later. But for now, can you please tell me about Zhao Dong?"
Huang Changsheng chuckled. "You want to know about Zhao Dong?"
"Yes... very much so."
"Alright, I'll tell you! Zhao Dong is dead! He died last night. He's been wiped from the face of the earth. I simply lied to get you here."
Lin Qingyun felt as if she'd been struck by lightning. Her face turned deathly pale, and she began to tremble. "No... that can't be. He... he must still be alive. You're lying to me, right?"
"I'm not lying. He's really dead! Hehehe..."
With a malicious grin, Huang Changsheng stood up and stepped toward Lin Qingyun. "Qingyun, be with me. I can treat you well for the rest of your life."
Lin Qingyun collapsed to the floor and scrambled backward in horror. "Huang Changsheng, what are you doing? Have you gone mad?"
"I'm not mad! I want you! Lin Qingyun, I've loved you for three whole years! How am I any worse than that Zhao Dong? Why can't you be with me!" Huang Changsheng's voice suddenly turned gentle. "Give yourself to me, Qingyun. Give me your body, and I will cherish you for a lifetime."
Lin Qingyun snatched a nearby water glass and hurled it at him. Huang Changsheng dodged it, then laughed viciously and pounced like a starving wolf.
She was instantly pinned to the ground. Tears streamed down her face as she sobbed. "Huang Changsheng, you bastard, let me go! Let me go!"
"I won't! I've craved you for three years, and I can't take it anymore! I'll have you today, even if it kills me!"
Huang Changsheng tore at her clothes like a man possessed, and soon, patches of her fair skin were exposed.
Just as his hand was about to venture further—BANG! The door was violently kicked open.
Before either Lin Qingyun or Huang Changsheng could even see the figure clearly, it was upon them. A hand seized Huang Changsheng's neck, lifted him up, and viciously smashed him into the floor-to-ceiling window.
CRACK!
A hole shattered in the huge pane of glass.
Huang Changsheng's entire body was left dangling outside the window, a large hand clamped firmly around his throat. Below him was a hundred-meter drop, the wind howling in his ears. Terrified, his face went white as a sheet, and he wet his trousers. He squeezed his eyes shut and shook uncontrollably, tears streaming down his face, unable to utter a single word.
Staring at the back of the figure, Lin Qingyun shivered violently, unable to believe what she was seeing. Tears suddenly spilled from her eyes as she choked out, "Zhao Dong... is that you?"
Zhao Dong turned his head to look at her. "It's me."
Lin Qingyun closed her eyes, letting two streams of tears slide down her cheeks. Overwhelmed by the emotional rollercoaster, she was rendered speechless.
Zhao Dong turned his head back and stared coldly at Huang Changsheng. "Are you ready to die?"
Liquid dripped from Huang Changsheng's trousers. He wept and begged, his face drained of color. "I... I was wrong. Spare me, please spare me! I'll never do it again!"
"Repent in hell."
With killing intent clear in his eyes, Zhao Dong was about to let go when a faint voice came from behind him.
"Zhao Dong..."
Startled, Zhao Dong turned to face Lin Qingyun. "Honey, what is it?"
Her complexion was also deathly pale. "Don't be rash. You can't kill Huang Changsheng..."
Zhao Dong turned back to Huang Changsheng, who was begging for his life as if grasping at a lifeline. "Zhao Dong, I was wrong, I was truly wrong! Please spare me, I know I was wrong!"
The open air yawned below him, and Huang Changsheng didn't dare move, his head spinning. With a dizzying lurch, he was yanked back inside and thrown onto the floor.
"I'll let you keep your dog's life."
Gasping for air at this new lease on life, Huang Changsheng curled up on the ground, trembling uncontrollably.
"Remember, it was my wife who spared you. If it weren't for her, I would have killed you today!"
Zhao Dong's sharp reprimand shattered what little courage Huang Changsheng had left. "I know, I know... President Lin, thank you, thank you..."
Zhao Dong looked over at Lin Qingyun, still sitting on the floor. He scooped her into his arms and strode out of the office.
Downstairs in the car, Zhao Dong looked at her with a grin. "Why are your eyes so swollen? Did you cry for me?"
He meant it as a tease, but the next moment, Lin Qingyun threw her arms around him, hugging him tightly. Zhao Dong was taken aback for a second. Hearing her sobs, his heart warmed. He hugged her back and gently patted her, comforting her. "Don't cry. I didn't die, did I?"
Lin Qingyun looked up, her eyes brimming with tears, and lightly punched his chest. "I hate you! Why didn't you tell me you were okay? Do you have any idea how worried I was?"
Seeing her beautiful, tear-stained face, Zhao Dong's heart filled with tenderness. He pinched her cheek and said with a guilty smile, "I lost my phone. Otherwise, I would have called you right away."
Lin Qingyun wiped her tears and composed herself, then looked at him reproachfully. "What happened last night? Have you recovered?"
Zhao Dong nodded with a smile. "I'm completely fine now. I've recovered very well."
"But you were seriously injured..."
"I'm like an indestructible cockroach. The worse the injury, the faster I heal."
Lin Qingyun burst out laughing, tears still sparkling in her eyes. Zhao Dong just watched her. The atmosphere grew romantic, an ineffable emotion flowing between them.
Lin Qingyun's cheeks grew warm. She didn't dare to look directly into his eyes, so she lowered her gaze.
"Zhao Dong..."
"Hm?"
"Thank you for doing so much for me."
"You don't have to thank me. It's what I'm supposed to do."
"Why is it what you're supposed to do?"
"Because you're my woman."
Lin Qingyun gazed at him, her beautiful eyes filled with an indescribable mix of emotions. As Zhao Dong watched her, her eyes slowly closed, and they drew closer and closer. He could smell the fragrance of her hair. She clutched her dress tightly, a storm of nervousness, anticipation, and shyness coloring her cheeks as red as a sunset.
Just as their lips were about to touch...
RING RING RING...
The sudden sound of her phone startled Lin Qingyun, and she quickly pulled back, her face burning.
Zhao Dong touched his nose and moved aside as well. Damn it all, what terrible timing! Of all the times to call...
Lin Qingyun coughed to hide her embarrassment and answered the call. A woman's voice immediately came from the other end. "Qingyun, what are you up to? I'm in a bad mood, come have a drink with me!"
She replied with a wry smile, "I'm at work!"
"Don't give me that! I already called your company, you're on leave today! Come on, your bestie is heartbroken, aren't you going to console me? You wouldn't be that heartless, would you?"
Lin Qingyun glanced at Zhao Dong, her face flushing with embarrassment. "I... I'm with someone."
"Who?"
"My... boyfriend!"
"Perfect! Bring him along! I need to check out what kind of guy you've snagged. Listen to me, get over here right now. The usual spot! If you don't show up, I'm never calling you again!"
The call abruptly ended. Lin Qingyun looked helplessly at Zhao Dong. "Do you... have time?"
"Yes, of course I do!"
"This friend of mine... she's a bit special. Are you sure you want to meet her?"
Zhao Dong grinned. "Now I'm really curious. What's the address?"
Lin Qingyun hesitated for a moment. "The Purple Rose Bar."
He stomped on the gas, and the Bentley surged forward.
In no time, they arrived at the bar. Lin Qingyun led Zhao Dong inside. The moment he stepped through the door, his eyes locked onto a woman. When he got a clear look at her face, he was stunned.
Isn't that Yang Sixue, the top celebrity in the East Sea?
Zhao Dong had watched her movies since he was a kid. Now only in her twenties, she was already an A-list celebrity in the entertainment industry, an absolute bombshell.
He was dumbfounded. This is Lin Qingyun's best friend?
Lin Qingyun glanced at him and smiled faintly. "Surprised?"
Zhao Dong was still trying to process it. "She's your... best friend?"
"Yes. What's wrong?"
Zhao Dong smacked his lips. "Nothing. I just never expected to meet a celebrity today."
Lin Qingyun rolled her eyes and walked straight toward Yang Sixue, with Zhao Dong following close behind.
"This... this is your best friend???"
