Chapter 52: Wang Han's Change
The courtyard was in complete disarray! Broken furniture was strewn everywhere, and the sounds of Wang Han arguing with a man echoed from inside the house.
Zhao Dong was about to push the door open when he hesitated, deciding to listen in first and understand the situation.
Inside, Wang Han was grappling with a young man with dyed yellow hair. The man stumbled, and Wang Han inadvertently shoved him to the ground. He furiously yelled at her, "Wang Han, have you lost your mind? I just went out to eat with another girl! Is it really worth getting this angry over?"
With her hair a mess, Wang Han said coldly through clenched teeth, "Zhou Chongming, I don't want to hear any of your explanations. I'm not a fool. Just leave!"
"Wang Han, are you sure you want me to go?" Zhou Chongming's voice was icy. "I'm asking you one last time, are you sure?"
"I'm sure! Get lost!" Wang Han suddenly burst into tears, a sharp pain piercing her heart.
This man, Zhou Chongming, was her current boyfriend. His family ran a small company with assets in the tens of millions. They had been classmates in college and had been dating for over a year since graduating, but Wang Han had never slept with him. At heart, she was a rather conservative woman, but she was also quite astute. She knew that many men lost interest once they got what they wanted, which was why she had always held back.
Zhou Chongming, however, was a playboy who was always flirting around. Today, Wang Han had happened to catch him dining with another woman. Enraged, she had come to the small courtyard alone to clear her head. Now, Zhou Chongming had tracked her down, feeling utterly indignant himself.
He was a second-generation heir; what kind of woman was out of his reach? If it weren't for Wang Han's beauty—she had been the campus belle in college—he wouldn't have bothered with her at all.
He said, mustering his patience, "Han, I really didn't do anything to wrong you. Please forgive me!"
Wang Han's eyes welled with tears. "It's impossible. Let's break up. Please go!"
Zhou Chongming's gaze turned sinister, then ferocious. He suddenly snarled, "You think breaking up is that easy? Not before I've had you!"
As he spoke, he lunged forward, pinning Wang Han to the bed and forcefully kissing her.
Wang Han screamed and slapped him hard across the face.
Enraged, Zhou Chongming slapped her back even harder. Wang Han cried out in pain as his large hands began to assault her body.
She bit her lip, tears streaming down her face. "Zhou Chongming, you bastard! Let go of me!"
"I won't let go! Whether we break up or not, I'm going to have you today!"
Wang Han struggled frantically, but it was useless. She fell into utter despair, her face stained with tears. Zhou Chongming's hand reached for her breasts, but just as he was about to grab them, the door was suddenly kicked off its hinges with a deafening bang!
Both Wang Han and Zhou Chongming were startled. Wang Han looked up and cried out, "Zhao Dong, what are you doing here?"
Zhao Dong's face was dark. Without a word, he strode forward, grabbed Zhou Chongming by the neck, and hoisted him into the air. He then began slapping him across the face, again and again. Zhou Chongming was no match for the tall, strong Zhao Dong. He screamed in agony as the blows rained down, knocking out two of his teeth.
Zhao Dong then kicked him in the stomach, sending him flying five or six meters away. He landed in a heap, his face bruised and his head bleeding.
Watching this, Wang Han screamed, "Zhao Dong, have you lost your mind?!"
She rushed over to Zhou Chongming and helped him up, her voice choked with sobs. "Chongming, are you okay? How are you? Don't scare me..."
Zhao Dong frowned. "He just treated you like that, and you're still concerned about him?"
Wang Han wiped away a tear and yelled at Zhao Dong, "This is between him and me! Why are you meddling? This has nothing to do with you!"
Zhao Dong was taken aback. Her accusatory tone made her seem like a complete stranger.
The Wang Han who once adored him, who always said she would marry him someday, who used to trail after him calling him 'Brother Zhao Dong'... At this moment, she seemed like a completely different person.
He was momentarily speechless. He touched his nose and gave a self-deprecating laugh. "My mistake. I was being nosy."
Wang Han shot him a cold glance before turning back to Zhou Chongming with a look of concern. "Chongming, how are you?"
Zhou Chongming struggled to sit up, his eyes filled with venom as he glared at Zhao Dong. He asked Wang Han, "Who is he?"
Wang Han hesitated before replying, "A neighbor... Don't mind him. He's just a brute who doesn't know any better."
Zhao Dong's heart turned cold. Weren't they even friends anymore?
Zhou Chongming spat out a mouthful of blood, his gaze fixed resentfully on Zhao Dong. "Good for you, kid. You dare hit me? Do you have any idea who I am?"
Zhao Dong said coldly, "Watch your mouth, or I don't mind slapping you a few more times."
Zhou Chongming was so enraged he nearly blacked out, spitting out another mouthful of blood. Wang Han screamed, "Zhao Dong, can you just shut up? How can you be so cluelessly arrogant? Do you know what his family does? They could crush a small fry like you with a single word!"
Zhao Dong was dumbfounded but then laughed at himself. "Alright, since I'm a small fry, I'll shut up. You two carry on."
Wang Han glared at him before turning her attention back to Zhou Chongming, her face filled with concern. She did have feelings for him, even if half of that affection was due to his family's wealth.
Zhou Chongming gave her a cold look, then said suddenly, "I remember now. This Zhao Dong is that childhood friend your parents mentioned, right? Heh, just perfect!"
Wang Han panicked. "Chongming, what do you mean by that?"
"What do I mean? The two of you, playing good cop, bad cop... do you think I'm stupid? Get lost! The sight of you makes me sick!"
Zhou Chongming shoved Wang Han to the ground and stormed out of the house. Outside, he shot a final, cold look at Zhao Dong. "You're Zhao Dong, right? Just you wait! This isn't over!"
After he left, Wang Han remained on the floor inside, looking as if her soul had left her body. She covered her face and began to sob.
Zhao Dong sighed at the sight. "Stop crying. What's there to cry about over scum like him?"
Wang Han suddenly looked up, her red eyes blazing with anger. "It's none of your business! Even if he's scum, he's better than you! At least his family has money and power. And you? You're just an ex-soldier with no money and no influence! What right do you have to judge him?"
Zhao Dong was stunned. He looked at her with a complex expression. "Wang Han, you've changed. You're so materialistic, so snobbish!"
Wang Han laughed coldly. "So what if I'm snobbish and materialistic? Do you still think I'm a child? Besides, my life is none of your damn business, so stop meddling! From now on, don't flatter yourself!"
Zhao Dong's brows furrowed. "When did I ever flatter myself?"
Her face was full of mockery. "Aren't you flattering yourself? I know our parents used to joke about us having a childhood betrothal, but that was just a joke! Stop dreaming. I would never be with you! And don't try so hard to impress me. I look down on you completely!"
