TDBB: Golem Toph 3.36

The clearing resembled a dark, surreal theater of the absurd. Ivy and Harley stood like stiff, mechanical mannequins near the perimeter, their flesh entirely overtaken by a pale, chalky gray patina. Thin, oily black lines crisscrossed their skin like intricate spiderwebs, pulsing in time with the heavy atmosphere of the valley. Their usual vibrant energy was completely submerged beneath the oppressive dominance of the Grey.

"Born on a Monday," Ivy rasped, her eyes reflecting a dull, universal darkness. Her usual regal, commanding posture was entirely gone, replaced by the rigid, awkward slouch of a puppet attached to invisible strings.

Beside her, Harley jerked her head in a rhythmic, halting motion, her twin pigtails heavily caked in greasy silt. "Christened on a Tuesday... sprinkles on a Wednesday... heavy on the hot fudge on Thursday..." Her voice remained high-pitched, though thoroughly scrambled by the dark magic binding her mind. She gripped her mallet with white knuckles, swinging it at empty air in accordance with a bizarre, internal rhythm. The infection had warped her memories of the old nursery rhyme, turning the grim chant into a colorful, dessert-themed delusion.

Solomon Grundy towered over the center of the expanse, his massive form pulsing with the borrowed, concentrated power of the cauldron. The dark fluid dripped continuously from his split jaw, staining the ground beneath him. He kept a heavy, tree-trunk foot pressed firmly into the chest of the Swamp Thing, pinning the elemental avatar to the corrupted earth.

"Grundy rot green thing," the giant roared, his chest expanding with absolute pride. "Grundy own the mud now! All things grow rotten for Grundy!"

Beneath his heel, Swamp Thing endured. The red glow in the plant avatar's eyes flickered like a dying candle in a gale, yet a stubborn, unyielding ember of the Green persisted deep within his oaken heart. He remained completely silent, concentrating every ounce of his remaining elemental willpower on resisting the rhythmic, mind-numbing curse. The swamp entity held fast to his core, refusing to allow the chant to take root in his thoughts, even as the surrounding vegetation withered into ash.

Suddenly, the absolute authority of the Rot faced a challenge from below. A deep, seismic hum vibrated through the limestone basement of the valley. The frequency increased with terrifying rapidity, changing from a low, rhythmic purr into a bone-rattling roar that caused the black, oil-slick puddles to dance.

Grundy paused, lifting his heavy head to sniff the thick air. His massive foot shifted slightly on the Swamp Thing's chest as the very concept of solid ground became entirely relative. The vibrations traveled upward through his legs, disrupting his balance.

A massive spike of pristine, gray granite erupted directly through the black slime mantle. It shot twenty feet into the air, its tip razor-sharp and completely free from decay. A second later, another pillar burst forth, then a third, rapidly forming a wide ring around the center of the clearing. These geological columns functioned as brilliant conduits for a distant consciousness. Deep beneath the surface, Toph Beifong read the entire battlefield through the vibrations traveling down these stone feelers. Every footstep, every pulse of the Rot, and every movement of the giant zombie was translated into a perfect, three-dimensional tactile map inside her mind.

Grundy bellowed in frustration, swinging his massive, fist-like forearms to shatter the nearest granite pillar. The rock exploded into jagged fragments, but the underlying tremors only grew more violent. As fast as Grundy could pour his greasy, black rot over the fractured stumps, new pillars protruded to the surface, striking outward like stone lances. They acted as physical extensions of Toph's unique senses, multiplying across the clearing.

The entire bedrock structure of the valley groaned, fractured, and completely flipped upside down. A massive sheet of solid earth inverted itself in a singular, explosive movement, throwing the black mud skyward and revealing a clean, uncorrupted platform of deep-crust granite. Standing right in the center of this rising platform was Toph. Her posture was perfectly balanced, her bare feet anchored firmly to the rock, and her arms raised in a classic, unyielding earthbending stance.

She tilted her head, her sightless white eyes scanning the chaotic frequencies of the area. "You guys look like you could use a glass of water," Toph remarked, her voice cutting through the heavy atmosphere with cheerful, familiar arrogance. "Or maybe a bath. Definitely a bath."

The zombie versions of Ivy and Harley immediately turned toward the sound of her voice. Moving with a synchronized, jerky stride, they lunged forward, their gray hands reaching out to grab the young woman. Their movements were entirely driven by the malicious intent of the Rot.

Toph sensed their approach instantly through the soles of her feet. Rather than striking back and risking permanent injury to her friends, she stamped her heel with precise force. The solid rock beneath her instantly liquefied into loose gravel, and she dropped straight down into the subterranean dark as the stone sealed itself smoothly above her head.

This tactical retreat became a repeating, masterful pattern. Toph operated with a deliberate, grinding strategy. Each time she emerged on the surface, she launched a heavy barrage of stone projectiles to keep Grundy off-balance, only to slip beneath the surface a moment later when the black, greasy Rot threatened to compromise her footing. Grundy’s dark aura possessed a strange, fluid property that lubricated the rock, attempting to strip her of her natural leverage. Toph countered this by constantly moving, dropping further into the deep crust, and thoroughly churning the earth. With every descent and ascent, she ground the rigid limestone layers into a soft, highly unstable loam, completely destabilizing Grundy's position while keeping herself entirely safe from the infection.

Before her initial dive into the clearing, Toph had executed a secret preparation. Amidst the chaos of the earlier retreat, she had located the wreckage of the giant golem that had been shattered by Swamp Thing. Deep within the shattered stone, the glowing, pulsing elemental core had remained mostly intact. Toph had salvaged this concentrated sphere of energy, keeping it hidden until the perfect moment of distraction arrived.

While she kept Grundy fully preoccupied with her rhythmic, hit-and-run tactics, Toph deployed her secret weapon from beneath the soil. She channeled her bending into a small, highly agile stone golem, inserting the salvaged core into its chest. This compact construct burst from a side fissure and moved silently. It sprinted past the distracted giant, scooped both Ivy and Harley into its sturdy arms, and rapidly carried them away from the immediate danger zone, depositing them safely on a distant, uncorrupted ridge.

The loose, thoroughly churned soil created by Toph’s repeated earthbending provided the ideal medium for a massive displacement of elemental energy, giving Swamp Thing a brief window of complete rejuvenation. He drew upon the deep, hidden reserves of the local root systems, his body rapidly absorbing the fresh minerals from the pulverized rock. He stood upright, his form slightly smaller and more streamlined due to the heavy toll of the Rot, but his authority over the biosphere remained absolute.

The Avatar of the Green walked forward, raising his wooden hands, and commanding the churned earth to open up beneath the giant zombie.

"Solomon Grundy," the Swamp Thing rumbled, his voice echoing with tectonic weight. "Your flesh belongs to the soil."

He invoked a powerful, binding elemental curse. The loose, shattered ground instantly transformed into a literal, bubbling wetland. The soil dissolved into a deep, grasping mire that pulled Grundy downward. The massive zombie thrashed wildly, but the churned earth held him fast, trapping the volatile Rot within a perpetual cycle of natural composting. The surrounding vegetation grew at a frantic, overnight pace, forming a dense wall of vibrant green weeds and thick rushes around the edge of the new swamp, permanently sealing the plague away beneath a canopy of fresh growth.

In the quiet aftermath, Toph and the regular-sized Swamp Thing stood side by side on the edge of the newly formed wetland. The morning sun broke through the remaining mist, illuminating the thick clover that now carpeted the valley.

Toph crossed her arms, sniffing the damp air. "As much as I love swamps, I wouldn't dip my toe into that one."

The Swamp Thing turned his massive, moss-covered head toward her, the red light in his eyes calm and respectful. "You did well, fellow Guardian of the Melt."

Toph smirked, shifting her weight onto one foot with a casual shrug. "Yeah, well, I had a score to settle with the big guy, and now it's settled."

On the distant ridge, the lingering effects of the infection began to wane. Ivy and Harley lay on the soft grass, groaning softly as their natural colors returned to their skin. Even in their semi-conscious state, the remnants of the scrambled nursery rhyme drifted from their lips.

"Born on a Monday..." Ivy murmured faintly, her breathing stabilizing.

Beside her, Harley twitched, her voice a colorful, scrambled rasp. "...baked in an oven on Friday... frosted on Saturday... heavy on the sprinkles on Sunday..."

Swamp Thing looked toward the recovering duo, his expression serene. Throughout the entire ordeal, his oaken heart had successfully resisted the rhythmic, mind-numbing curse, keeping the core of the Green alive until the bedrock itself rose to turn the tide.
