Highschool DxD: The Cursed King of Kuoh
S1 Ch 24: Devil Dodgeball
A few days passed since Asia joined Rias Peerage and moved in with Sukuna, and the group's new routine settled in faster than any of them had expected.
The former nun’s transfer into Kuoh Academy had gone through without any issues, placing her directly into Sukuna’s class. The adjustment was strange—new uniforms, new schedules, new faces—but there was a quiet steadiness to it that she had always wanted and desperately clung to.
The Occult Research Club remained unchanged in its own way. Meetings came and went, errands were handled, and small assignments filled the gaps between larger events.
More often than not, Asia, Kiba, and Koneko found themselves out in the town while Sukuna stayed behind, stretched across one of the couches like he had no responsibilities in the world.
Sometimes he slept, while other times he just read. More often than not, he occupied himself with Akeno’s tea, and passed the time trading teasing remarks with her that hovered just on the edge of sexual harassment.
Akeno entertained it with ease and even initiated it with him on several occasions, her laughter soft and enticing, while Rias—though she never interrupted—had begun to feel an ache in her chest at seeing the two flirting.
Today was different though.
Rias sat upright on one couch, her legs crossed neatly as she held a manga volume in one hand, her expression composed but focused. Across from her, Sukuna lounged without care, one arm draped over the backrest as he flipped through a different volume taken from the private collection of the client he killed.
“It went downhill the moment Light died,” Sukuna said flatly, not even bothering to look up as he turned the page.
Rias’s eye twitched faintly. “That’s a shallow interpretation. The narrative expands after that point—it shifts perspective to the remaining cast.”
“Why would I care about the remaining cast?” he replied without missing a beat. “The only interesting one died.”
“That’s the point,” she countered, leaning forward slightly now, her composure thinning. “The story explores—”
“It explores how to drag something out after it should’ve ended,” Sukuna cut in. “The spine of Death Note was Light. Remove that, and you’re left with scraps.”
Rias’s fingers tightened slightly around the edge of her book. “You’re ignoring the thematic shift entirely.”
“I’m ignoring bad writing.”
Nearby, Akeno watched the exchange unfold with clear amusement, one hand lightly cupping her teacup as her shoulders lifted with suppressed laughter.
“My, my… president you’re being completely outmatched,” she teased gently. “Seems we’ve finally found a worthy opponent for you. I’ve never seen anyone more anime obsessed than you."
“I’m not anime obsessed Akeno,” Rias replied immediately, though the faint tension in her voice betrayed her. “I just enjoy good culture, and can appreciate a good story unlike some people.”
Sukuna finally glanced up, catching Akeno’s eye as a smirk tugged at his lips. He gave her a small, deliberate wink, earning a soft giggle in return.
Rias’s eye twitched again.
Then the clubroom door opened.
Kiba entered first, composed as always, followed by Koneko and Asia, who stepped in more cautiously, her gaze briefly scanning the room before settling.
“Welcome back,” Rias said, her tone smoothing instantly as she shifted back into her role.
“President,” Kiba greeted with a polite nod.
Asia offered a small smile. “We’re back.”
Rias acknowledged them with a nod before glancing briefly toward Sukuna. “We’re not finished with this discussion.”
He waved her off without even looking up from his manga. “Yeah, yeah. Just take the L, princess.”
Rias inhaled slowly a tick mark appearing on her forehead.
Akeno’s laughter slipped out this time, light and unrestrained. Having finally found a partner in crime who enjoyed teasing as much as her. Rias then stood up, reclaiming the room’s focus with practiced ease.
“I have something to announce,” she said, her gaze moving deliberately across the group before settling on Asia.
That earned no reaction from him, as he continued reading his book.
“I believe it’s time for our newest members to acquire a familiar.”
Asia blinked, tilting her head slightly. “A familiar?”
Rias nodded, pleased to explain. “Familiars are contracted spirits that serve devils. They can take many forms and provide assistance depending on their nature.”
With a small gesture, she summoned hers. A small bat appeared midair, flapping lazily as it hovered between them.
“This is my familiar.”
The bat spun once—then shifted.
Its form stretched and reshaped, transforming into a woman dressed in a revealing Gothic Lolita outfit. She landed lightly, offering a playful smile as she bowed.
“Pleased to meet you~”
Sukuna didn’t even glance up.
“Nice. Long time no see slutty bat.”
The room went still.
Rias closed her eyes briefly, as if deciding whether or not to respond.
The familiar’s smile cracked for a fraction of a second. “S-slutty?”
Akeno just giggled into her hand, Koneko rolled her eyes, while Kiba just politely averted his gaze.
Asia tilted her head slightly, trying to reconcile the interaction. “…She’s very pretty.”
“Why thank you,” the bat familiar responded.
And just like that, the moment passed.
“Right,” Asia said, trying to refocus. “But… how do we get one?”
Rias smiled, slipping seamlessly back into explanation. “That’s the next step. We simply need to—”
*Knock*Knock Knock*
The sound cut cleanly through the room, making everyone turn toward the door.
“Yes?” Akeno called.
Then both of the doors slowly opened
Sona Sitri stepped in, composed as always, her peerage following behind her in orderly formation.
Rias’s expression shifted into polite acknowledgment. “Sona. What can I do for you?”
Sona adjusted her glasses slightly. “Nothing urgent. I simply came to congratulate you on increasing your numbers.”
Her gaze shifted, and landed on Asia.
“Hopefully, you can manage this one better than your last.”
Asia stiffened slightly, caught off guard. Rias wanted to retort but before she could—
“Yo, Bob cut. It’s been a while.”
Sona’s left eye immediately began to twitch at the moniker, turning towards the couch and locking eyes with Sukuna who had finally looked up from his book.
He closed his manga with a soft snap and stood, stretching once before making his way toward her with casual confidence.
“How have you been? Still micromanaging the school and ruining people’s fun?”
Several members of Sona’s peerage visibly stiffened at the tone, though surprisingly Rias… didn’t intervene taking slight satisfaction out of the exchange.
Sona inhaled slowly, her composure tightening. “Sukuna. I see you're just as rude as ever.”
“Ah,,” he chuckled, reaching out and patting her head like she was a child. “Still a stick in the mud I see.”
A vein pulsed at her temple.
“Remove your hand.” she said slowly, agitation clear in her voice.
Before Rias could tell Sukuna that was enough, a voice shouted out to him.
“Hey, d-bag.” The voice cut through sharply, making Sukuna’s gaze shift to someone he hadn’t seen in some time.
Issei Hyoudou the former main character and the future Red Dragon Emperor. He was standing slightly behind the group, his fists balled.
“Get away from our president.” He ordered.
A long pause filled the room, no one knew how Sukuna was going to react, before he suddenly burst into laughter. He actually looked somewhat amused by the situation.
“Well, would you look at that,” he said, turning fully now. “Still alive huh loser. I thought you would’ve ended your life by now.”
He burst out laughing some more, making issei tighten his knuckles until they were white.
“Oh yeah! I dare you to come over here and laugh at me!”
Suddenly Sukuna vanished, and reappeared directly in front of him.
“Ha. Ha. Ha.” he laughed slowly, his blue eyes bleeding crimson as he stared into the frightened boy’s eyes.
For a split second, Issei froze—the memory of that night flashing across his mind whether he wanted it to or not.
Then Sona training kicked in and Issei gritted his teeth before concentrating his power.
“Boosted gear!” He shouted making a crimson gauntlet appear on his arm
“Boost!” the gauntlet announced.
Several members of Rias’s peerage stiffened at the sight of the Longinus. Sona, however, allowed the faintest hint of satisfaction to show, while Sukuna tilted his head slightly, amused.
“He’s already unlocked its base form from a twice critical,” he thought to himself, as he glanced at Sona. “I guess she was a better suited master for him after all.”
“Oh?” was all he actually said.
Then Issei charged at him while charging up his longinus. Rearing back as he put as much power as five boosts into his punch. Sukuna didn’t move, he just slowly reached out his left hand and caught the boy’s punch.
An impact vibrated through Sukuna’s arm, actually making his bones rattle a bit, but he didn’t move an inch as the air of the impact blew past his body.
“Ouch,” he said mockingly to the shocked boy.
Without effort, Sukuna twisted his grip, slamming Issei’s own fist back into his face before seizing him by the throat and lifting him clean off the ground.
The room snapped tight with tension, as Sona’s peerage prepared to protect their member, but before anything could escalate further—
Thud.
Rias struck Sukuna on the head, making him drop Issei.
Then almost immediately—
Thud.
Sona struck Issei.
“Enough,” Rias said sharply to Sukuna who rolled his eyes.
Sona adjusted her glasses again. “Control your servant.”
Rias crossed her arms. “You first.”
The tension eased—barely.
Sona exhaled slowly. “I came because I know you intend to use the Familiar Forest.”
Rias raised a brow. “And?”
“Well that would pose a problem as I wished to use it as well.”
A beat passed as the two devil kings argued over who should be allowed to visit the familiar forest first, then Rias smiled.
“How about we settle it with a little competition?" She suggested a sly smirk on her face.
Sona narrowed her eyes slightly. “A Rating Game?”
“Too much attention,” she replied immediately.
“…Agreed.”
They paused briefly before settling on something simpler—sports-based competitions between their peerages, the winner earning priority access. Ultimately deciding on tennis between them and their queens.
As Sona’s group began to leave, Sukuna leaned casually against the wall, his smirk returning.
“You might want to curb that mutt of yours,” he called out. “Or I’ll do it for you.”
Issei glared at him, but Sona didn’t respond, she just continued walking with her peerage. The doors closed behind them.
Silence settled over the ORC room once more, but this time It wasn’t calm. As Rias began getting excited about a competition with her fellow devil king.
o-O-o
The next day was anything but quiet.
By the time the match began, the tennis court had already lost any resemblance to a normal sporting field. What should have been a simple exchange of volleys had escalated almost immediately into something far more destructive, each strike infused with magic that cracked through the air like small bursts of thunder.
The ball didn’t bounce so much as detonate against the ground, leaving faint scorch marks and fractured lines across the surface with every impact.
Rias and Akeno stood on one side of the net, composed yet clearly enjoying the intensity, while Sona and Tsubaki mirrored them with a colder, more precise rhythm. Each return came sharper than the last, magic building, colliding, and dispersing in flashes that made the air shimmer.
From the sidelines, both peerages watched closely, reactions split between excitement and the quiet understanding that this was far beyond anything resembling a normal match.
Sukuna stood with his arms folded, watching another exchange tear across the court before glancing sideways at Kiba. “Is it always like this?”
Kiba offered a polite smile, as if this were perfectly reasonable. “More or less.”
Koneko, seated nearby with a snack in hand, nodded without looking up. “Pretty standard.”
Sukuna turned his attention back to the court just as another impact cracked loudly enough to echo across the grounds. He watched for a moment longer, then exhaled through his nose. “…How is the school still standing?”
No one really had the answer to that.
The match dragged on, neither side willing to concede even an inch. Magic flared, collided, and dissipated in rapid succession until, eventually, both sides pulled back at the same time, the tension breaking just enough for a decision to be made.
Rias lowered her racket first, brushing a strand of hair from her face as she exhaled. Across from her, Sona adjusted her glasses, equally composed, though the competitive edge in her gaze hadn’t faded in the slightest. A brief discussion followed—quiet, controlled, but undeniably sharp—until Rias straightened and spoke.
“How about a game of dodgeball?”
Sona held her gaze for a moment, then gave a small nod. “Agreed.”
o-O-o
By the time Sukuna and Asia arrived at the gym that evening, the atmosphere had shifted once again.
The polished wooden floor reflected the overhead lights in clean lines, and both peerages were already present, moving through stretches and warm-ups with varying degrees of seriousness.
Sona’s group carried themselves with structured discipline, each motion practiced and precise, while Rias’s side felt looser, more fluid—confident in a different, less organized way.
“You’re late,” Rias said as they entered, though her tone carried no real reprimand.
“We’re here aren’t we?” Sukuna replied, waving off her concerns.
“Go stretch we need everyone in top shape for the match,” she instructed, already turning her attention back to the court.
Asia nodded quickly and moved toward Koneko, who made space for her without a word. Sukuna, however, didn’t get that far before Akeno intercepted him, her smile already in place.
“Well now,” she said lightly, stepping behind him, “we wouldn’t want you pulling something now would we sweety.”
Before he could respond, she guided him down into a stretch, her hands firm as she adjusted his posture and pressed him into a deeper split. His body yielded easily, muscles loosening without resistance as he settled into a full split.
“My, you’re quite flexible aren’t you,” she whispered into his ear, her lips inches from his earlobe as she squished her magnificent breasts against his back.
He let out a quiet breath, unfazed. “I’m not exactly new to this.”
“Mm… but you could still go a little further can’t you,” she added, leaning in further letting him feel her hard erect nipples against his back.
“Would you like to see how low I can go?” he flirted back, looking over his shoulder at her.
“Hmm,” she hummed while tapping her cheek with her finger before licking it, “perhaps.”
Her tone shifted slightly after that, the teasing easing just enough to reveal something more genuine beneath it.
“I did like what you did the other day,” she admitted quietly. “Protecting Asia… dealing with that filthy Fallen…”
She rubbed her thighs together as she remembered when he tore out her wings with his bare hands. Her breadth became ragged.
“I have to admit it turned me on,” she added.
“Oh you're a dirty girl aren’t you?” He smirked, clearly amused.
She just shrugged at his words, not bothering to deny them.
“Well if that got you hot and bothered, maybe we should go out for a hunt together.”
Her smile sharpened at the suggestion. “And what exactly would that involve?”
“Us finding a weak and pathetic stray devil then breaking it over and over again until it begs for the sweet release of death, which we won’t grant it.”
Akeno held his gaze for a second longer, something flashing in her violet eyes, then leaned in just enough to press a quick kiss to his cheek, letting her tongue trail it slightly before stepping back.
“I think I’d enjoy that.”
Sukuna’s smirk lingered. “It’s a date.”
Soon the game was about to commence, and Rias called out to her peerage members.
“Positions!”
The call cut cleanly through the moment, snapping everyone’s attention back to the court.
Teams split and moved into place, the ball set at the center as Momo stepped forward to officiate. Her posture was straight, composed, her voice carrying clearly as she raised her hand.
“Begin!”
The game erupted into motion.
The first exchange came fast and unforgiving, the ball snapping across the court with enough force to whistle through the air. Koneko moved to avoid it, her body shifting just slightly off the line—but not enough. The ball grazed her side, tearing through her shirt exposing her floral bra and marking the hit.
She stepped out without complaint, already reaching for her snacks as she took her place on the sidelines.
Rias didn’t hesitate.
She caught the next ball cleanly and pivoted, her throw sharp and precise as she sent it straight toward Tsubaki. The impact hit hard, her defense just a fraction too slow as the force of it shattered her uniform and knocked her out of the game in one clean motion.
Sona moved immediately after.
She caught the returning ball, magic gathering visibly around it as she fed power into the throw. The air tightened as she launched it, the trajectory precise as it cut straight toward Sukuna.
He didn’t move. He just stood there completely still with his arms crossed across his chest and an arrogant smirk across his face.
The ball tore toward his face, and he simply tilted his head letting it pass by.
“You missed,” he said mockingly, enjoying the devil king trying to take her frustrations out on him.
Sona’s lips curved faintly. “Did I?”
The ball stopped mid-flight. Then spun before suddenly reversing. It came back faster, this time aimed directly for the back of his head.
Rias and Akeno both shifted, ready to intercept—but the shadows moved first.
They rippled at Sukuna’s feet, stretching outward before something burst from within them. A massive black hound lunged into the open, jaws snapping shut around the ball just before impact. It landed silently beside him, its presence heavy, controlled, as it held the ball in its maw.
The court immediately stilled.
Sukuna didn’t even look down, he simply unfolded his arms and extended his hand towards his shikigami. The hound obeyed immediately, dropping the ball into his palm before slipping back into the shadows as if it had never been there.
“Yes,” Sukuna said, glancing at Sona. “You did.”
He rolled his shoulder once, then infused the ball with a dense, oppressive energy that made the air around it warp faintly.
“My turn.”
The throw came like a cannon.
Sona’s eyes widened as the ball tore across the court with overwhelming speed, the force behind it enough to make the air tremble in its wake.
Before anyone else could react—
“BOOST!”
Issei sprinted as fast as his legs could carry him.
He threw himself in front of Sona, gauntlet blazing as he stacked power into his arms and caught the ball head-on. The impact exploded against him, shredding his clothes instantly leaving him in nothing but his boxers and sending shock through his entire body—but somehow, impossibly, he held it.
For a moment, he stood there. Before he fell forward completely unconscious. But he’d succeeded in protecting his king.
Then Sukuna exhaled lightly as he stepped out of the court. “Guess I’m out.”
He made his way to the sidelines and dropped down beside Koneko, who glanced at Issei before taking another bite of her snack.
“The pervert did okay,” she said.
Sukuna nodded once. “Yeah. I suppose he did.”
He reached into his shadow, pulling out a plate of cookies that Ura had prepared earlier. The scent alone was enough to draw attention, and Koneko’s gaze snapped toward it instantly, her usual neutrality slipping just enough to reveal clear interest.
Sukuna raised a brow. “You want some?”
She nodded immediately.
He handed her a piece, and the moment she bit into it, her expression softened, eyes closing slightly as she chewed.
“…Good.”
Sukuna smirked faintly.
The game continued, momentum shifting back and forth as players were gradually eliminated, strategies forming and breaking under pressure. Eventually, the final moments ticked down, the tension holding steady until Momo raised her hand to signal the end.
“Match over. Rias Gremory’s peerage wins.”
A small cheer rose from Rias’s side as the tension eased. Sona adjusted her glasses, exhaling slowly as she stepped forward.
“Well played,” she admitted, her tone even despite the outcome. Then, after a brief pause, she added, “Though if this had been a Rating Game, the result would have been different.”
Rias smiled, sharp and confident. “Then I suppose we’ll have to test that someday.”
Sona met her gaze.
But this time she didn’t argue.
o-O-o
The Occult Research Club buzzed with energy when they returned.
Rias stood at the center of the room, a glass raised as she celebrated their victory, her confidence fully restored after the match. Akeno stood beside her, smiling warmly as the rest of the group joined in, the atmosphere light and triumphant after the earlier tension.
When the brief celebration ended, Akeno stepped forward, raising her hand as a teleportation circle flared to life beneath their feet.
“Shall we?” she asked.
The destination was clear: the Familiar Forest.
Sukuna, however, didn’t move.
He had already returned to his couch, one leg draped lazily over the armrest as he picked his manga back up, flipping to where he’d left off.
Rias glanced at him. “You’re not coming?”
He didn’t even look up.
Instead, the shadows below the couch stirred, and two massive black hounds emerged, their forms solidifying beside him. Without a word, he reached into his shadow and tossed each of them a turkey leg. They snapped the food out of the air with practiced ease.
“Nah,” he said, finally turning a page. “I think I’m good.”
The dogs vanished back into the shadows just as quickly.
Asia hesitated, stepping closer. “Are you sure?”
He waved her off lightly. “I’m sure. Go have fun.”
She lingered for a second longer before nodding. The group stepped into the circle which activated, and after a flash of crimson light they were gone.
Now alone in the clubroom, the room fell silent.
For a while, Sukuna didn’t move from the couch, his eyes scanning page after page in steady rhythm. The silence didn’t bother him. If anything, it settled around him comfortably.
After some time, his attention drifted to the two other shikigami in his arsenal that he had yet to claim: Escape Rabbit, and Max Elephant.
His fingers tapped lightly against the page as he thought about it. Maybe it was time he acquired their power too. Maybe not today—but soon. There was no legitimate reason to let power sit unused.
And then there was another power he continued to seek, but had thus far been denied at every turn.
His Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine.
He leaned his head back slightly, staring at the ceiling for a brief moment. Wondering what it would take to unlock it.
“Is it some kind of special condition?” He wondered to himself his mind racking possible requirements to gain his ultimate ability.
Eventually he let out a deep breath he didn’t know he was holding.
“Well there’s no rush.” He mentally shrugged. “I’m sure I'll figure it out soon.”
He then reached down and pulled out the next volume of his story, dropping the previous one into his shadow. As he turned the page to start reading a blaring flash of red light stopped him.
Soon the group reappeared back inside the room, faster than he had anticipated. Before he could ask why they’d come back so soon he saw the state of their clothes, or more accurately the lack of any.
Rias, Akeno, Koneko, Asia, and Kiba were all dressed only in their underwear. Sukuna was about to ask what happened to them, when he remembered from the anime that when they visited the forest a slime melted all of their clothes much to the pervert mc delight.
Immediately Sukuna started laughing hysterically.
Kiba scowled instantly. “What’s so funny?”
Sukuna wiped at his eye, still laughing. “You all look like you lost a bet.”
Asia’s face burned bright red as she tried to cover herself, while even Rias turned slightly, a faint flush touching her cheeks, though she didn’t move to cover her breasts, just letting them hang in the open.
Akeno, on the other hand, moved further into his line of sight, as if nothing about this situation bothered her in the slightest. Even intentionally making her breasts jiggle, their rosey pink nipples nearly hypnotizing him as they bounced.
Koneko however frowned, and slowly made her way over to the still laughing Sukuna. When he finally looked up all he saw was a tiny fist heading for his face.
His head snapped back, as the entire lower half of his face tore away from the impact as his body rocked with the force of it. His lower jaw fell away, hitting the floor with a wet squish. For a second Asa looked ready to rush over to him and use twilight healing.
Then suddenly his face began to regenerate. His flesh knitted, as his jaw and teeth regrew rapidly. Within seconds his face was completely restored as if nothing had happened.
Sukuna blinked once, then grinned.
“That was a good punch, little kitten.”
Koneko’s expression darkened, her fist tightening again as she stepped forward, rearing her arm back for another swing.
Rias caught her shoulder. “Stop it Koneko, you’re just encouraging him.”
Koneko paused, still glaring daggers at the smirking boy, but she didn’t punch him again.
“We’re going to wash up,” Rias said, turning away as the girls moved toward the back of the room, disappearing behind the dividing curtain.
Just before she vanished, Akeno glanced over her shoulder.
“Sukuna,” she called, her tone light, “would you like to join us?”
He didn’t hesitate. “Sure.”
Asia’s voice came immediately. “No!”
Koneko followed. “No.”
Sukuna blinked, genuinely confused. “It’s just a shower.”
The resistance didn’t change, If anything, it solidified.
Behind the curtain, Akeno’s soft laughter carried through. “Ara Ara… how unfortunate.”
Rias added, quieter but no less amused, “You’ll have to restrain yourself.”
Sukuna shrugged, already turning away. “Fine. Another time I guess.”
That earned a small, flustered reaction from behind the curtain.
Akeno’s voice followed, amused. “Oh my how bold.”
o-O-o
Eventually everyone returned home as the night deepened.
Sukuna laid in his bed, his attendant Ura lying next to him naked, her face buried into his broad chest. The room around them had just finished auto repairing after another night of vicious and borderline savage love making. They rested peacefully next to each other until—the house alarm system began blaring.
Sukuna’s eyes snapped open all four of them, crimson and filled with fury that his sleep had been disturbed.
Immediately he sat up throwing the quilt off of him and Ura who also seemed agitated as she summoned her fans. After the pair threw on some night robes, Sukuna made his way to the entrance of the house while Ura was busy deactivating the alarm.
When he threw the door open expecting to see another fallen or monster coming to annoy him, he was surprised to see Rias sitting on the ground rubbing her head.
“…Princess?” He asked, clearly confused.
She looked up. And the moment she saw him, she moved forward.
She closed the distance in seconds, grabbing onto him and pressing herself against his chest with a desperation that she didn’t usually possess.
“Sukuna—!”
Her voice shook, filled with urgency. It almost seemed like she was struggling to find the right words.
“Please—”
He stiffened slightly, caught off guard by the intensity as his hands hovered for a second before settling lightly at her shoulders.
“Rias, what—”
“I need your help,” she said quickly, her words rushing together as if she didn’t have time to slow down. “Right now.”
He studied her for a moment, something sharp settling behind his eyes as he took in her state—her breathing, her grip, the way she wasn’t letting go.
“…What happened?”
Rias tightened her hold for just a second longer before pulling back just enough to look up at him.
“Please I need you to take my virginity!” She pleaded.
For a moment Sukuna stood silent wondering if he might have misheard her. And when he realized he wasn’t there was only one word that came to mind.
“What?”
He asked, confusion evident in his voice as he stared at the teary eyed girl like she had two heads.
