A Runaway Noble in a Town of Lonely Wives

Chapter 45: The Hearth’s Iron

The morning sun was well above the treeline by the time Callis crossed back into the working lanes. The winter air remained bitter, but the atmosphere in the merchant district had shifted overnight. Wagons bearing the muted plum colors of the Damaris house were already rolling through the slush, offloading Southwood cedar at base municipal rates.

The market square hummed with bewildered energy. The brutal price extortion the lower wards had braced for had not materialized. Seraphine was keeping her end of the ledger.

Callis pushed through the thick oak door of The Stag & Ember. The taproom enveloped him in the familiar smell of roasted meat, stale ale, and woodsmoke.

His squad occupied a large corner table near the main hearth. Kaelen sat hunched over a steaming bowl of venison stew, a fresh loaf of bread resting near his elbow. The vanguard fighter looked up as Callis entered. Kaelen did not offer a salute or a formal greeting; he simply raised his wooden tankard in a slow, silent gesture of profound respect.

Beside him, Rhett and Corin were already nodding off against the wall, their bellies full and their hazard pay secured. Callis tapped his knuckles against the doorframe in acknowledgment, leaving the men to their rest. He had delivered them from the canopy and put hot food in front of them. His command had weight now.

He bypassed the taproom and headed for the private corridor, his boots dragging slightly from the sheer physical exhaustion settling into his bones.

The kitchen was loud and warm. Mara stood near the central preparation table, checking the quality of a burlap sack of winter wheat that had just arrived from the Damaris convoy. Lysa occupied the space near the cast-iron stove, stirring a copper pot with a long wooden spoon. She glanced over her shoulder as the door clicked shut, offering Callis a warm, lingering smile that held none of the skittish fear she had carried during his first week in the city. Yselle sat on a low stool near the fire, nursing a cup of black tea before her shift at the forge.

The three women paused their work, taking in his battered state. Callis leaned his canvas satchel against the wall and ran a hand through his damp, unkempt hair.

"You look like you lost an argument with a logging cart," Yselle noted, her pale eyes tracking the dark, exhausted hollows beneath his eyes.

"I had a disagreement with a pack of Night Stalkers," Callis replied, walking slowly toward the radiant heat of the stove. "And a much longer negotiation with a merchant queen."

Mara folded the top of the grain sack down, her dark eyes evaluating his posture. "The Damaris wagons are practically giving this wheat away at the market stalls. Half the district thinks Seraphine has gone mad, and the other half thinks she is preparing to usurp the Guildmaster entirely. What did you trade her for this, Callis?"

"I traded her the outer checkpoints," Callis said. He turned his attention to Yselle. "We took the Southwood Mill. But the Guildmaster is going to retaliate. To compensate for the lost timber, he is going to choke the northern iron lines and hoard the ore for the municipal armories."

Yselle’s pale eyes darkened. The easy domestic comfort vanished from her expression, replaced by the grim arithmetic of the working lanes. "If the northern lines close, the independent forges starve. I have enough raw material to keep the Ash Forge burning for four days. After that, my fires go out."

"You won't need to stretch your reserves," Callis told her. He met her gaze, ensuring she understood the exact weight of the protection he had secured. "Seraphine wanted me to sever the forge routes to suffocate the Guild. I refused to do it. We established a tiered ledger instead. The Damaris house is opening its private vaults. The Ash Forge is getting a dedicated iron allowance, subsidized by her coin."

Silence fell over the kitchen. The rhythmic bubbling of the venison stew was the only sound in the room. Yselle set her ceramic cup down on the table with a sharp clink. She understood the vicious political mechanics of the Lantern Ward. High-ward merchants did not hand out subsidized iron to working-lane smiths out of goodwill. They extracted every ounce of leverage they could.

"Seraphine didn't offer that," Yselle said, her voice dropping into a low, intense register. "You forced her to write it into the margins."

"I told her I wouldn't swing my sword to freeze the people who built my armor," Callis answered simply.

Yselle stood up. The wooden legs of her stool scraped loudly against the floorboards. She crossed the kitchen, shedding any pretense of casual distance. She reached out, her calloused hands gripping the heavy wool of his tunic, and pulled him forward, pressing her mouth against his in a fierce, demanding kiss.

Callis hissed as the sudden movement pulled at the mottled bruising across his ribs. Yselle felt the flinch. She instantly shifted her grip, sliding her hands up to cup his face instead, softening the physical pressure without losing a fraction of the possessive heat. She kissed him until the ambient noise of the kitchen faded away, claiming him with a raw, territorial pride.

"You are a dangerous man to keep around, Callis Vale," Yselle murmured against his lips. She stepped back, her thumb gently tracing the line of his bruised jaw. "You let her put her scent on you, and then you use her silver to feed my fires."

"I fought her for the hearth," Callis corrected gently.

Mara wiped the excess flour from her hands, a deep, satisfied smile touching her mouth. The political war raging in the upper wards mattered very little inside these four walls. Callis had proven he knew how to wield his patron’s power without letting it sever his roots.

"He is learning how the frontier works," Mara declared, stepping around the table to pull a wooden chair out for him. "Sit down, Callis. Lysa, fetch a bowl of the venison. Our commander needs to eat before he collapses on my clean floorboards."
