Chapter 40: The First Blockade
Kaelen knelt in the frozen mud beside the ruined supply wagon, his breath pluming in the frigid air. He stripped a length of stiffened leather from the harness of a gutted draft horse, using his thick fingers to work the cold material through the brass rings of his tower shield. The original strap had snapped under the Night Stalker's weight during the ambush, leaving a jagged edge of frayed hide rubbing against his forearm.
Callis watched the perimeter while Kaelen repaired the heavy wood and iron. His grey-blue eyes tracked the dense fog rolling between the tall pine trunks, searching for any disruption in the mist. Corin held his short sword in a loose, one-handed grip, bracing his injured left shoulder tightly against his side. Vance stayed close, shifting his stance to constantly cover the blind spot created by Corin's limited mobility, while Rhett gathered his scattered javelins from the icy brush.
They did not linger to recover their breath or discuss the skirmish. The brutal reality of the frontier dictated that standing still over fresh kills merely invited larger scavengers out of the dark. Callis waited until Kaelen tested the tension on his makeshift shield strap with a sharp pull. Once Kaelen nodded, Callis raised his iron boar-sword and signaled the squad to resume their march down the corridor of the merchant road.
They moved past the overturned wagon, stepping carefully to avoid the frozen entrails scattered across the mud. The deeper they pushed into the Elderforest, the more the surrounding landscape deteriorated. The luminescent moss clinging to the exposed tree roots cast a pale green glow over trampled saplings and violently shredded underbrush.
Callis paused near a cluster of broken pine limbs, analyzing the physical damage flanking the road. He applied his architectural understanding of load and stress to the splintered wood. The thick branches were snapped facing north, pushed backward by a dense surge of bodies moving rapidly toward Hartsgate in a panicked stampede.
The Night Stalkers had not set their ambush at the first bend out of simple hunger. The creatures were actively fleeing a rapid territorial expansion, driven out of the deep woods by a superior predator claiming their hunting grounds. Callis kept that grim calculus to himself, tightening his grip on his sword hilt as the freezing fog swallowed the path ahead.
The first logging camp emerged from the mist nearly an hour later. The municipal outpost consisted of a high timber palisade surrounding a central watchtower and a cluster of processing sheds, originally built to secure the southern trade lines. The fortified gates had been dragged into the center of the road, the splintered oak beams interwoven with thick, translucent webbing to form an impenetrable barricade.
A strange, unnatural silence blanketed the clearing. No watchmen called out from the palisade walkways, and no draft horses shifted restlessly in their stalls. The absence of human activity was replaced by a continuous, low-frequency droning vibration. The sound reverberated through the damp air, rattling against the soles of Callis’s boots and setting his teeth on edge.
Callis led the squad over the fused timber of the gate, keeping their diamond formation tight as they scanned the shadowed perimeter. The interior of the camp had been systematically consumed. A bulbous, asymmetrical structure clung to the sides of the central watchtower, woven from a horrific mixture of twisted branches, dried mud, and the polished bones of the missing municipal garrison.
Viscous, dark resin dripped from the bottom of the nest. The fluid pooled on the cobblestones of the courtyard, emitting a cloying, sweet stench that masked the underlying smell of copper. Callis recognized the architectural signature of a parasitic hive expanding its territory. The deep-woods crawler packs had pushed north, converting human infrastructure into a breeding ground.
Several corrupted drones crawled out from the dark openings of the nest, their jagged mandibles clicking as they registered the intrusion. They possessed the bulk of hunting hounds, their chitinous plates slick with venom and reflecting the faint green light of the moss.
Rhett stepped forward immediately, bracing the shaft of his polearm against his hip to establish a defensive perimeter. Kaelen locked his shield into the dirt beside him, providing a solid iron wall against the first wave of attackers. The drones launched themselves from the watchtower in unison, their wings buzzing with a deafening, erratic pitch as they descended toward the squad.
Callis stepped into the chaos, driving his boar-sword upward through the thorax of a diving insect. The iron blade crushed the chitin shell, splashing caustic, foul-smelling fluid across his boots. The kinetic runes inside his armor hummed warmly against his ribs as a second drone slammed into his shoulder. The magical bracing absorbed the impact, keeping his boots anchored firmly to the ground while he ripped his sword free.
The squad fought with ruthless, mechanical precision. Vance and Corin covered the rear flanks, with Vance doing the heavy lifting to slice the translucent wings off any drone that attempted to bypass the shield wall while Corin managed narrow, defensive parries. Rhett used the superior reach of his ash-wood polearm to impale the descending attackers, twisting the steel tip to drop them into the mud before they could deploy their paralyzing stingers.
Callis pushed through the center of the formation, trusting his squad to hold the perimeter while he carved a path toward the base of the watchtower. He severed the foreleg of a lunging drone, kicking its thrashing body aside to clear the cobblestones. Reaching into his canvas satchel, he pulled a thick glass flask of volatile alchemical oil and smashed it against the woven base of the nest. He struck a flint spark against the iron rim of his sword, stepping back as the corrupted timber caught instantly.
A roaring column of bright orange flame shot up the side of the tower, but the blaze triggered a violent reaction within the structure. The dripping resin began to boil and pop under the intense heat, spraying scalding globs of sticky fluid across the courtyard. Thick, acrid smoke billowed outward, blinding Callis as the central beams of the watchtower began to groan under the sudden structural failure.
A surviving drone plummeted through the smoke, executing a desperate, suicidal dive directly at Callis's exposed back. He didn't see the movement through the smog, but Kaelen's massive shield suddenly slammed into the beast mid-air. The vanguard fighter absorbed the impact with a heavy grunt, driving the iron rim down to pin the thrashing drone to the cobblestones before Callis could even turn around.
The blistering heat finally drove the remaining swarm back into the freezing fog, their wings buzzing frantically as they abandoned the outpost to escape the fire.
Callis watched the twisted structure burn, the orange light washing over his damp face to cut through the biting winter chill. He turned away from the collapsing tower to help Kaelen clear the courtyard. Together, the squad hauled the smoldering remains of the drone corpses off the cobblestones. Rhett produced a dark plum signal rag from his pouch, tying the Damaris colors tightly around the remains of the shattered gatepost to mark the corridor safe. Vance checked the processing sheds, finding them empty, while Corin leaned heavily against a palisade wall to catch his breath.
Callis looked down the newly cleared path, the wagon-width space now passable for merchant traffic. The Damaris coin had purchased exactly what the merchant wanted, and the squad had proved they could function efficiently outside the Guildmaster's ledger. Securing a single outpost proved their tactical worth, but as the tall flames illuminated the sheer scale of the ecological collapse pushing up from the south, Callis sheathed his sword. They had merely carved out a fragile breathing space on a road actively sinking into the abyss.
