Interlude: The Threshold of the Evening
The deep, freezing shadows of the evening finally settled over Hartsgate, accompanied by the distant, raucous cheers of the Winter Cask Auction echoing from the Guild square. Callis navigated the snow-packed alleyway behind The Stag & Ember with a deliberate, agonizingly slow pace. He had stood shoulder-to-shoulder with hardened mercenaries in the muddy trenches of Fort Vance without losing his nerve, but the prospect of knocking on the heavy oak door stripped him of every survival instinct he had acquired on the frontier.
The freezing wind cut through his linen tunic, but the violent trembling in his knuckles stemmed entirely from a deeply ingrained, aristocratic panic. He felt exactly like a raw, inexperienced noble approaching the sovereign’s high table for his first official court presentation, terrified that a single miscalculated breath before the dais would ruin him.
Before he could even raise his knuckle to the frosted timber, the latch clicked. The heavy oak door swung inward, revealing Yselle leaning casually against the doorframe. She wore a simple, loose-fitting linen shirt that barely contained her muscular shoulders, her pale eyes dropping immediately to note the frantic, erratic rise and fall of his chest.
"Look at the absolute state of him," Yselle announced to the warm room behind her, crossing her thick arms over her chest to physically block his path. "He is shaking like a piece of green iron waiting for the hammer, completely terrified of what his betters are going to do to him once the candles are blown out."
Mara stepped into the golden light spilling from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a clean cloth as she took in the sight of his wide, anxious grey-blue eyes and tightly clenched jaw. "Stop terrorizing the boy before he passes out in the snow, Yselle," Mara scolded gently, stepping up behind the forge-master to rest a hand on her shoulder.
Callis heard the rich, unmistakable vibration of a suppressed laugh buried directly beneath the maternal reprimand. The sound confirmed that her mercy was entirely performative, quietly sanctioning the forge-master's teasing.
Just as Yselle let out a rough chuckle in response, the heavy timber gate at the end of the alley clicked open. Lysa hurried through the freezing shadows wrapped tightly in a thick wool cloak, her cheeks flushed bright red from the cold as she stepped onto the wooden stoop directly beside Callis.
"Are we already teasing him?" Lysa asked breathlessly, pushing her heavy hood back to reveal a remarkably bold, eager smile that perfectly matched the hungry energy radiating from the doorway. She reached out to brush a stray snowflake from Callis's tense jaw, leaning intimately into his personal space. "He looks as though he is marching toward the executioner's block, rather than a warm bed."
The laughter that followed was not a synchronized chorus, but a beautifully uneven overlap of distinct authority: Mara’s warm, heavy amusement, Yselle’s rough, scraping bark, and Lysa’s breathless, newly wicked giggle. They filled the doorway completely, framed by the warm golden light of the kitchen, leaving him absolutely no room to step anywhere except forward into the heat.
Mara finally stepped back from the doorframe, gesturing for him to come out of the winter wind and into the golden heat of the tavern. Callis swallowed hard, his eyes dropping to the scarred floorboards of the kitchen. Crossing the threshold meant leaving his remaining pride in the snow and entering the house entirely on their terms.
