A Runaway Noble in a Town of Lonely Wives

Interlude: The Kitchen Table

The cold followed Callis all the way back from Guild Row. It was a rattling chill that seeped into his joints, completely immune to the physical exertion of walking. He pushed through the thick oak doors of The Stag & Ember, bypassing the noisy common room entirely to avoid the smell of spilled ale and the boastful shouting of the perimeter guards. He walked straight through the swinging wooden door into the private warmth of the kitchen.

Mara stood at the massive butcher block, rhythmically working a mound of pale dough with the heels of her hands. Yselle sat at the far end of the long wooden table. A tankard of dark ale rested near her elbow, and she was systematically driving brass rivets into a thick leather harness strap. The sharp, metallic clack of her mallet echoed loudly against the stone walls.

Callis walked to the table and emptied his pocket. The silver mark and the seven coppers clattered onto the scarred wood, but neither woman looked at the money. They looked at his face.

"You look like a man who just found his own grave," Yselle said, lowering her mallet to the bench.

"I met a woman in midnight-blue silk," Callis replied. He pulled out a wooden chair and dropped into it, staring blankly at the scattered coins. "She looked at my hands. She recognized my accent. She knows exactly what I am."

Yselle’s pale eyes narrowed in immediate recognition. "Seraphine Damaris."

Callis nodded. The overwhelming dread of the provisioning office pressed down on his chest again, making it difficult to pull a full breath into his lungs. Seraphine’s polite, lethal invitation to the Lantern Ward echoed continuously in his ears.

Mara wiped her flour-dusted hands on her apron. She walked over, carrying a steaming ceramic mug of spiced cider, and set it on the table in front of him. She stepped behind his chair and placed her warm palms on his shoulders, working her thumbs into the rigid, knotted muscles at the base of his neck.

Callis let his eyes fall shut, leaning back into her solid presence. Mara smelled of rosemary and the banked heat of the hearth fire, offering immediate sanctuary.

Yselle watched them from the end of the table. She picked up her mallet again and struck a brass rivet with a sharp, unnecessary crack that rang loudly in the confined space. Leaning back in her chair, she crossed her arms and pulled away from the table.

"Are we going to nurse him every time the inner provinces remind him he's soft?" Yselle muttered, her gaze fixed rigidly on the leather strap instead of the two of them. Her jealousy surfaced as a withdrawal, a defensive sarcasm meant to hide how closely she was tracking the slow, soothing movement of Mara's hands against Callis's neck.

Mara caught the shape of the tension in the room. She did not hoard the space. Looking at Yselle for a long moment, Mara moved one hand from Callis’s shoulder and held it out across the table.

Yselle stared at the offered hand as if it were a tool she did not recognize.

"Come here," Mara said softly, her voice carrying a calm, deliberate generosity. "You do not have to stand outside of it."

Yselle hesitated, searching the other woman’s face for a trap or an ounce of pity. She found only a clear invitation. Yselle pushed her chair back, the wooden legs scraping across the floorboards. She walked around the long table and stopped at Callis’s right shoulder. Her grease-stained fingers settled over his collarbone, gripping the boiled leather of his cuirass.

Callis opened his eyes. Mara’s hand was warm on his left shoulder, while Yselle’s grip was firm and grounding at his right side. Between the dual pressures, the paralyzing terror of the Guild office finally cracked.

"Please," Callis said, his voice raw in the quiet room.

Mara’s hand stilled in his hair. "For comfort?"

Callis met her dark eyes, then shifted his gaze to Yselle’s pale, intense stare. "For anything that makes me feel like I am still here."

Mara held his gaze, a profound understanding passing through the spice-scented air. She shifted her grip, her fingers working the tight muscles along his collarbone before sliding down to the edge of his boiled leather cuirass. She unfastened the first iron buckle with a metallic click.

"He is wearing far too much armor for my kitchen," Mara said quietly, stepping back to tug the thick side strap free. "Help me take this off him, Yselle."

Yselle gripped the front plate of the cuirass, hauling the stiff hide up and over his head with a sharp yank. She tossed the armor onto the floorboards, leaving Callis sitting bare-chested in the warm air, his chest heaving as the restrictive weight vanished.

Mara rounded the wooden chair, walking directly to Yselle. She reached out to untie the leather laces at the collar of Yselle's soot-stained tunic. Yselle’s jaw tightened. She looked like she might refuse the touch entirely, but then she lowered her chin a fraction and let Mara untie the laces. Her eyes widened slightly as Mara pushed the rough fabric off her heavily muscled shoulders.

"You work entirely too hard," Mara murmured, letting the tunic fall to the stone floor. She stepped back, bringing Yselle forward by the wrist until both women stood in front of Callis.

Callis looked up at them, overwhelmed by their physical presence. Mara reached down to trace the line of his jaw, then shifted her hand to guide Yselle’s palm to the exact same spot. The grease-stained fingertips scraped beautifully against his skin. Callis leaned into the dual contact, releasing a ragged groan as the tension broke.

Mara sank to her knees between his spread legs, gripping the waistband of his trousers to pull them downward in a single fluid motion. His arousal sprang free, rigid and jutting eagerly into the stifling heat of the kitchen. A clear drop of moisture already wept from the tip, catching the orange glow of the hearth. Mara leaned forward, opening her mouth to take the entire length of him inside, engulfing the sensitive head with a scalding, wet heat. She dragged her lips down the shaft to the absolute base, creating a devastating suction that pulled a sharp curse from Callis's throat.

Callis arched his spine, his hands gripping the wooden arms of the chair as Mara began to work her mouth in a slow, rhythmic bob. Her tongue swirled expertly around the swollen ridge, painting his skin with thick saliva while her fingers wrapped around him to massage the base firmly.

Yselle stepped closer, her bare thighs brushing against his knees. She grabbed his dark hair, pulling his head back to expose his throat, and leaned down to crush her mouth against his. She kissed him with violent pressure, her tongue sliding deep into his mouth to claim the space while Mara maintained that relentless, wet draw down below.

The taste of spiced cider mixed beautifully with the iron tang of Yselle's mouth. Callis lost his grip on the chair, his hands flying up to grasp Yselle’s waist to anchor himself against the sensory flood.

Mara pulled back with a loud, wet pop, leaving his shaft heavily slicked and gleaming in the firelight. She looked up at Yselle, her expression perfectly calm and deeply authoritative, wiping a stray line of saliva from her chin with the back of her hand.

"Take him," Mara instructed gently, moving out from between his knees. "Show him exactly how safe he is."

Yselle shed her canvas trousers, kicking them away before swinging her heavy, muscular leg over his lap. She straddled him on the sturdy wooden chair, grabbing his hips to align them perfectly beneath her spread thighs. The musky, heavy scent of her arousal bloomed in the air between them as she guided his slick, throbbing length to her swollen cleft. She sank down onto him with deliberate force, her internal heat gripping his thickest circumference with a scalding tightness that felt like melting wax. Yselle threw her head back, a harsh sound tearing from her throat as she seated herself completely to the hilt, burying him deep inside her slick, gripping core.

As Yselle set a brutal, driving pace, Mara moved behind the chair. She wrapped her arms around Yselle's waist, pressing her clothed breasts against Yselle's bare back. Mara’s hands slid around to the front, her palms cupping the heavy, bouncing weight of Yselle's breasts. Her thumbs rolled aggressively over the taut, flushed peaks while Yselle rode him, drawing ragged gasps from the other woman. Callis found himself completely encased in their combined heat, trapped between Yselle’s relentless downward thrusts and Mara’s enveloping hold.

"Harder," Yselle hissed, her body arching back against Mara's shoulder.

Mara obliged, kissing the corded muscles of Yselle's neck while sliding her right hand down the sweat-slicked plane of Yselle's stomach. Her fingers slipped between Yselle's grinding hips to find the swollen, wet nub of her clitoris, rubbing it vigorously in time with every downward thrust.

Callis drove his hips upward, meeting Yselle's force with his own desperate rhythm, grinding his pubic bone against hers to maximize the slippery friction. The sturdy wooden chair groaned under their combined weight, the legs scraping rhythmically against the stone floor. Callis lost all sense of the provisioning office and the aristocratic threat of the inner provinces. There were only the slick, wet sounds of Yselle surrounding him, the intense pressure building in his groin, and the encouraging, filthy murmurs Mara whispered directly into his ear.

Callis hit the edge of his endurance, his body locking rigid as a blinding wave of pleasure crashed through his nervous system. He poured into Yselle with a hoarse shout, his fingers digging deep into the meat of her firm thighs as his arousal throbbed and spilled thick jets of seed deep inside her.

Yselle clamped down around him, her own climax arriving under Mara's relentless fingering. She let out a high, stuttering cry, her inner walls contracting violently to milk the final drops from him in a shudder that rippled through her entire frame. Mara held them both, her arms tightening across Yselle's chest to keep them anchored to the chair until the violent aftershocks finally faded into the crackle of the hearth fire.

Callis rested his head against the back of the chair, his lungs working hard to pull in the spice-scented air. The threat of Seraphine Damaris lingered at the edges of his consciousness, a promise of exposure waiting for the morning that made him feel utterly vulnerable to the brutal machinery of the world. Yet, the panic steadily lost its edge beneath Mara's watchful, encompassing presence.

As she continued to hold Yselle against him, her role in the room settled into a permanent, undeniable foundation. She rested her chin on the crown of Yselle's head, one hand gently smoothing the damp, tangled hair away from Yselle's face, while her other hand reached down to securely cover Callis's fingers where they gripped Yselle's thigh. Mara was already organizing the aftermath, seamlessly managing their physical exhaustion and their unspoken vulnerabilities. She murmured quiet instructions about drawing a bath and moving up to the loft, speaking with the gentle, absolute authority of a woman building a sanctuary around the people she had decided to keep.

Yselle’s sweat-slicked weight grounded him to the chair with his softened length still buried inside her, anchored entirely by Mara's embrace. Seraphine Damaris possessed the leverage to tear him apart, but sitting in the quiet kitchen, enveloped by the steady heartbeat of the household Mara was actively weaving together, Callis simply felt held.
