Chapter 25: The Promise with Menchi-san
Truly magnificent traits.
It could be said that the current Riku had essentially become an existence similar to Spider-Man. He possessed the abilities of climbing and silk-spinning, as well as a spider-sense. As for the [Extraordinary Reproduction] trait... after careful consideration, Riku decided to keep it.
There was no way around it. The trait that dropped the most from those Spider Eagles was [Extraordinary Reproduction]!
Furthermore, the efficiency of fusing traits of the same type was the highest. If he tried to convert them into other traits, there would be a significant penalty; even if he slaughtered every single one of them, he might not necessarily be able to stack enough to reach a Gold-tier in a different category. Plus, since he already had a [Super Fertility] (Purple) trait, he might as well merge them all together.
This didn't mean Riku could split himself apart to reproduce or start laying eggs. Essentially, it just significantly increased the vitality and activity of Riku's genetic material. This was a practical concern in the Hunter world—the more powerful a Hunter became, the more their reproductive capacity seemed to dwindle.
Naturally, Riku had to make some plans for the future. If he ever left this world, he might want to leave behind some of his legacy here to continue ruling over the world. After all, he was a man destined to stand at the absolute pinnacle of humanity!
Even putting that aside, his other gains were absolutely staggering. This trip had been a massive profit.
"Oh? Riku-kun seems to have... grown a bit stronger again? Truly surprising!" Netero's eyes lit up, his gaze filled with even more admiration as he looked at Riku.
This young man possessed courage and decisiveness far beyond his years! Netero asked himself: if he had been at that age, would he have had the sheer guts to jump alone into the depths of a canyon? The answer was likely no. Yet, this boy had done it.
Furthermore, Riku's aura was currently surging like a rainbow. With just a glance, Netero understood that Riku must have gone through a series of intense battles down below. This was a truly resilient martial heart—a powerful will willing to sacrifice and fight for the sake of self-improvement, rather than just to obtain a Hunter License.
A true powerhouse could only reach the peak by possessing such a formidable will. At this moment, Netero genuinely recognized and admired Riku. He saw immense potential in him. This young man was undoubtedly the most talented and strong-willed person he had encountered in years!
"S-so incredible!!" Menchi-san's beautiful eyes sparkled as she looked at Riku.
She knew for a fact that she could never have charged all the way back up from the bottom of the canyon without the help of the convection currents. It required an astonishing amount of explosive power and control! Losing to him... didn't feel like a mistake at all.
She could even guess that it wouldn't be long before Candidate #406 became a genuine Pro Hunter, perhaps even surpassing her own position.
"Everyone, congratulations on obtaining the ingredients. The cooking process is very simple: just boil the ingredients in plain water. I congratulate you all... on successfully passing the Second Phase!!"
"I hope you all continue to perform at your best in the upcoming phases and become Pro Hunters!!"
Menchi-san let out a long sigh of relief, a look of excitement appearing on her pretty face as she announced the results. The subsequent cooking phase was naturally effortless. Every candidate who had obtained the ingredients received their passing grade.
The next phase would take place at a new location, and everyone would be transported there via the Hunter Association's airship, giving them a chance to interact closely with the Chairman himself. After the meal was prepared, everyone got a taste of the so-called Mock Crab. The atmosphere was filled with joy and excitement.
"Riku-san... please excuse my behavior from earlier today." Menchi-san actually took the initiative to come over and strike up a conversation.
"It's no problem. You were just doing your duty as an examiner. If anyone should apologize, it's me," Riku replied politely, though he was a bit surprised. After all, it was thanks to Menchi-san's Hundred Flower Blade Wheel that he was able to go on a rampage in the canyon.
"Riku-san will definitely become a Pro Hunter after this exam, right?" Menchi-san's face flushed slightly.
"You're being too kind, Examiner-san..."
"You... you can just call me Menchi. I have an invitation, I wonder if you would..."
"Oh? What kind of invitation?"
"Once Riku-san becomes a Pro Hunter, would you consider joining me on some gourmet-related missions? There are some powerful ingredients that I can't secure with my abilities alone..."
"A Gourmet Hunter mission?"
"It's not just that. While we hunt for ingredients, we often discover powerful magical beasts and treasures along the way. But don't worry, I will investigate all related dangers beforehand." Menchi-san spoke with a mix of nervousness and anticipation.
She could already feel that Riku was significantly more powerful than the other candidates. Usually, only Buhara-san accompanied her, but even Buhara-san couldn't help her acquire some of the higher-difficulty delicacies. Gourmet Hunters were already few and far between in the Association. If Riku could successfully rank up, she wanted to establish a connection early.
"Alright. If I have the time, I'll consider it."
"Thank you! Then it's a promise!!" A bright, excited smile instantly broke out on Menchi-san's face.
Soon, Netero led everyone onto the Association's airship, along with the examiners from the previous two phases. A total of forty candidates boarded the ship. People like Tonpa... had been eliminated by Riku on the very first day. Thus, even with his [Luck] trait, Tonpa's encounter with Riku had been his ultimate misfortune.
On the airship, Beans and Netero announced some precautions, stating that the airship would arrive at the next exam venue at 8:00 AM the following morning. During this time, everyone could rest, and if they needed anything, they could seek out Beans.
Without the troublemaker Tonpa around, there was no one maliciously "reminding" people to stay on guard for a surprise test, allowing everyone to relax and rest properly.
"Whoa— Killua-kun, let's go explore the airship!"
"Yeah!"
Gon-kun and Killua-kun, still possessing the hearts of children, cheered and dashed off. Riku, Leorio, and Kurapika headed to the dining hall to eat. They could finally enjoy a normal, decent meal.
...
Inside a private airship cabin, the three examiners sat together around a table covered in finished plates.
"I wonder how many candidates will successfully secure a Pro Hunter seat this year! If it were up to Menchi, I'm afraid not a single one would be left," Buhara-san said, patting his large belly with satisfaction.
"When you put it that way, I suppose I was a bit excessive. But it was actually because there was a guy in the crowd with a very intense bloodlust. That guy made me very nervous—Number 44." Menchi-san sat with her legs crossed, resting her hands on the sofa.
She was referring to the Murder Clown Hisoka.
"Yes, that guy is extremely dangerous. He seems to come from a place even darker than us," Satotz-san agreed. "However, there is one person who seems to be a perfect counter to Number 44. Number 406. Menchi, you seem very interested in him. I saw you personally go to talk to him after the phase ended."
"Of course I'm interested. If we're talking about who can truly pass the exam this time, Riku-san and Number 44 both should make it. But to be honest, I really don't want them to fight..." Menchi-san felt a bit troubled. Number 44 gave her an incredibly dangerous feeling, and she was slightly worried that Riku-san might not be a match for that guy. After all, Number 44 was the monster who nearly killed an examiner last year.
...
"Achoo—!"
In the airship corridor, Riku sneezed and rubbed his nose. "Who's talking about me?"
