Chapter 88: Root Creature
The settlement received them in late afternoon light.
Seven team members and one creature that nobody had a classification for stepping through the portal onto familiar grass.
The creature stopped immediately upon arrival.
Its pale gold eyes opened wider than they had been in NF-089. The root-fiber body that had appeared relatively calm in the fragment’s environment became very still. Processing. The sudden shift from NF-089’s high magical density to the settlement’s different energy profile clearly requiring adjustment.
Not distress. Simply recalibration.
Iris was at the gate.
She looked at the team. Then at the creature. Then at the team again.
"You brought something back."
"Yes."
She looked at the creature with the particular assessment she applied to new things. Not fearful. Evaluating.
The creature looked at Iris.
Its pale gold eyes tracked slightly ahead of her movements the same way they had tracked Kai’s. Anticipatory perception operating continuously.
Iris took one step toward it.
The creature didn’t move away.
Iris crouched to its level.
They regarded each other.
"It has root-fiber body composition," Iris said. As though this was the kind of observation she made regularly about new arrivals.
"Yes."
"Like a very small Vine Stalker made of roots instead of vines."
Kai looked at the creature.
That was actually a reasonable first approximation.
"Something like that."
Iris extended one hand slowly.
The creature tracked the hand’s position with its anticipatory perception. Yet didn’t react defensively to the approach. Simply watched where the hand was going before it arrived.
When Iris’s fingertips reached the creature’s root-fiber surface it allowed the contact.
Iris pressed gently.
The creature made the low rhythmic sound it had made at the portal site. Same interval. The node’s pulse rhythm.
Iris looked at Kai. "It’s vibrating."
"That’s its communication."
"What is it saying?"
"We don’t know yet."
Iris looked at the creature again.
The creature looked at Iris.
Then very deliberately it turned its pale gold eyes toward the Sacred World Tree visible in the distance above the settlement buildings.
Held that orientation.
Then looked back at Iris.
Then back at the tree.
Iris stood up.
"It wants to go to the tree," she said.
She walked toward the settlement with complete confidence in this assessment.
The creature followed her.
Kai watched them go.
Then looked at Lune.
The four-tailed child had been watching the interaction with her hands pressed lightly against the ground. Feeling whatever the creature produced in the root network connection.
"It’s stronger here," she said. "The root network connection this creature carries. Considerably stronger than in NF-089."
"Because the Sacred World Tree’s network is here."
"Yes." She looked toward the direction Iris and the creature had gone. "It recognized the network the moment we stepped through the portal."
The debrief with Thessaly happened that evening.
The consultant received the full expedition documentation with her standard professional attention. Combat development. Life Crystal yield. Root Node connection established. Two-way signal with unknown civilization confirmed.
Then Kai told her about the creature.
Thessaly set her pen down.
"Describe it again."
He described it again.
She was quiet for a moment.
"Root-fiber body composition. Minor cross-dimensional signal resonance. Anticipatory perception. Produced the node’s signal rhythm as directed communication." She looked at Kai. "And it walked through your portal voluntarily."
"Yes."
"From a fragment with an eight-thousand-year-old Root Node that has been receiving signals from an unknown civilization for its entire operational duration."
"Yes."
Thessaly picked up her pen.
Made a notation.
Set the pen down again.
"I have no reference for this," she said.
This was the first time Kai had heard Thessaly say those words.
"I know."
"The creature is connected to the cross-dimensional signal. Not to local root structure. Which means it didn’t develop that connection through proximity to the fragment’s root network." She thought carefully. "It developed it through proximity to the signal itself. The territorial broadcast from the unknown civilization."
"That’s my assessment too."
"Which means the unknown civilization’s signal is strong enough and consistent enough that creatures living in proximity to nodes receiving that signal can develop a minor resonance with it over generational exposure." She looked at him. "That’s not a passive territorial broadcast. That’s environmental influence across dimensional boundaries."
Environmental influence across dimensional boundaries.
A civilization that had been broadcasting its territorial marking across dimensional space for long enough that the creatures living above the receiving nodes had developed biological resonance with the signal.
Eight thousand years of consistent broadcasting producing biological effects in the fragment’s fauna.
Kai absorbed this.
"The two-way connection," he said. "After the node connected to the realm’s network the territorial broadcast stopped and active observation began."
"Yes."
"The signal origin reclassified the realm as non-threatening and developing."
"Yes."
Thessaly looked at her notation.
"Whatever they are they have been operating at a scale and duration that suggests they are not a developing civilization themselves." She looked at Kai. "Yet they classified you as developing. Which means they have a reference point for what developing looks like compared to what they are."
Old. Ancient. Operating at a scale that made the realm’s development visible as early-stage rather than peer-level.
Yet non-threatening.
And now observing more closely.
Sol appeared at the planning table entrance.
She hadn’t been there during the debrief. Yet she appeared at exactly the moment Thessaly’s analysis reached its conclusion in the way Sol appeared at exactly the right moments.
She looked at Kai.
"The creature is at the Sacred World Tree," she said.
"I know."
"Willow is with it."
Kai looked at her.
"The tree is communicating with it?"
"Trying to." Sol’s gold eyes were thoughtful. "The creature’s root-fiber structure responds to the tree’s communication attempts differently from the fairy enchantments or the fox maiden citizens. The tree is working out a new method."
"How long will that take?"
Sol considered.
"She says it’s faster than learning the fairy language." A pause. "Because the creature already speaks something she partially recognizes."
The cross-dimensional signal.
The territorial broadcast the creature had absorbed well enough to reproduce.
The Sacred World Tree recognized the signal character.
Of course it did.
The tree was connected to the realm’s Root Network. The Root Network was now connected to the NF-089 node. The NF-089 node had been receiving the signal for eight thousand years.
The signal had been in the network for as long as the NF-089 node had been connected.
The tree had immediate access to eight thousand years of the signal’s accumulated pattern.
The creature was producing that pattern.
The tree recognized it.
Kai stood.
Walked toward the Sacred World Tree.
The creature was sitting at the base of the nearest root. Willow was beside it with both hands pressed against the same root. Her lips moving in the continuous relay that characterized her communion work.
The creature was producing its rhythmic sound. The node’s pulse interval.
Yet as Kai approached the rhythm was changing.
Not the consistent pattern from NF-089.
Variations. New sequences. The same fundamental interval yet with modulations added around the base rhythm.
The tree was responding.
Using the signal pattern the creature produced as a communication medium. Learning the variations available within the creature’s output range and introducing new ones.
Willow looked up when Kai arrived.
"She’s asking it questions," Willow said.
"What kind of questions?"
"Where it came from. What it is. What it wants." Willow pressed her hands more firmly against the root. "The creature’s answers are limited by what the signal pattern can express. Yet it’s trying."
Kai sat beside the root.
Pressed his own hand against it.
The familiar pulse. Yet carrying additional information through the network now. The NF-089 node’s connection providing a channel the tree was using to contextualize the creature’s signal output.
An answer came through Willow.
"She says the creature isn’t lost," Willow said. "It knew where it was going when it walked through the portal."
"The signal led it here?"
Willow listened.
"The signal led it to the authority connection. The same way Sol and the node responded to the authority’s presence." She paused. "The tree says the creature’s species follows authority-compatible sources the way plants follow light." Another pause. "They are drawn to what their signal recognizes as significant."
Drawn to authority-compatible sources.
The creature in SF-447 that had evaded the hunting Sky Ferret with anticipatory movement. The creature in NF-089 that had sat at the portal site waiting. Both had the same energy signature. Both connected to the cross-dimensional signal.
Both following the authority’s presence.
Kai looked at the creature.
It looked at him.
Pale gold eyes tracking slightly ahead of where he was.
Perceiving the authority resonance around him the way it perceived movement trajectories.
Reading where things were going before they arrived.
"What is its species called?" Kai asked.
Willow listened.
"The tree doesn’t have a name for them. The signal calls them something in a pattern that doesn’t translate into words." She thought. "The closest she can get is Root Follower."
Root Follower.
A species that followed authority-compatible sources through the root network signal. Connected to an eight-thousand-year-old civilization’s territorial broadcast. Drawn to significant network connections.
One had been in SF-447.
One had been in NF-089.
The SF-447 individual had evaded and disappeared.
This one had chosen to follow.
Kai looked at the creature sitting at the base of the Sacred World Tree.
At home in a way it hadn’t quite been in NF-089’s fragment environment.
Settled.
At the base of a tree that was now learning to speak to it through a signal it had spent its entire life absorbing.
Luna appeared behind Kai.
She had been quiet throughout the evening’s developments. Processing everything with the systematic attention she brought to significant information before forming conclusions.
"Population count," she said.
Kai looked at her.
"If it stays," Luna said. "Which it appears to intend to do."
He looked at the creature.
At the Sacred World Tree above it.
At Willow communing between the two.
"It stays," he said.
Luna made a notation.
"What do we call it," she said.
Not a rhetorical question. A practical one. The settlement needed to refer to it somehow.
Kai thought about Root Follower. The tree’s translation of the signal pattern.
He looked at the creature’s pale gold eyes.
Tracking where things were going before they arrived.
"Sable," he said.
The creature looked at him when he said it.
The pale gold eyes steady.
Then it made the rhythmic sound.
One repetition of the base interval.
Then settled back into its position at the root.
Willow smiled.
"She accepted it," she said.
Luna made the notation.
**Population: 52**
