Chapter 197: ARS vs MUN
The September air in North London carried a sharp edge. Inside the Emirates Stadium, sixty thousand Arsenal supporters created a wall of noise. Red and white flags waved in unison. Mikel Arteta stood on the edge of his technical area, directing his players through their final warm-up drills.
Arsenal had started the season well, and the Emirates believed this was the afternoon they would dismantle the Manchester United finally.
Marcus Vale stood a few yards away in the opposing technical area. He wore his black coat. His hands were buried in his pockets.
Arteta's tactical blueprint was well documented. Arsenal operated in a fluid 4-3-3. When they had the ball, Oleksandr Zinchenko abandoned his left-back position and inverted into the midfield to sit alongside Declan Rice.
This created a possession overload in the center of the pitch. Out wide, Bukayo Saka stayed pinned to the right touchline to isolate defenders, while Gabriel Martinelli offered pure pace on the left. In the right half-space, Martin Ødegaard drifted and orchestrated every attack.
It was a successful system. Marcus had spent the entire week at Carrington preparing a specific trap to break it.
United set up in a disciplined 4-2-3-1 structure that could instantly shift into a 4-2-2-2 in transition. David de Gea anchored the defense. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Kim Min-jae, and Luke Shaw formed the back line. Denis Zakaria and Scott McTominay operated as a double pivot. Bruno Fernandes sat ahead of them, flanked by Michael Olise on the right and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the left. Cristiano Ronaldo spearheaded the attack.
Before they had left the dressing room, Marcus had issued three strict instructions.
First: Let them have the ball in their own half. We do not press Rice or the center-backs.
Second: Scott, you do not leave Ødegaard. You follow him everywhere. Cut off the brain.
Third: When Zinchenko steps into midfield, the space behind him belongs to us. When we win the ball, the first pass goes into that empty channel.
The referee blew his whistle.
Arsenal started with energy. The stadium roared with every pass. They pinned United back into their own defensive third, circulating the ball rapidly from side to side.
In the broadcast gantry, the red light flicked on.
"It is a breathless start at the Emirates," John Murray narrated, his voice cutting through the crowd noise. "Arsenal are flying out of the traps. They have pushed Manchester United completely back into their own penalty area. Saka cuts inside on his left foot, clipping a dangerous ball toward the back post—but Aaron Wan-Bissaka is there to clear."
"It's exactly what Arteta wanted, John," Don Hutchison replied. "But look closely at United's shape. They aren't panicking. Wan-Bissaka is essentially playing man-to-man against Martinelli. He isn't giving the Brazilian an inch to turn. And look at Scott McTominay. He is acting as a shadow for Martin Ødegaard. Everywhere Ødegaard drifts, McTominay is right on his heels, stopping him from receiving the ball on the half-turn."
In the twelfth minute, Martinelli tried to isolate Wan-Bissaka in a one-on-one. The winger dropped his shoulder and knocked the ball past the defender, accelerating. Wan-Bissaka simply lunged, deploying his trademark sweeping tackle to hook the ball cleanly out of play. He stood up, his expression blank, and jogged back into position.
Arsenal dominated possession, but they were knocking against a locked door.
In the twenty-second minute, the trap closed.
Arsenal pushed higher. Zinchenko drifted into the center circle to receive a pass from Rice. As the ball traveled, Zakaria stepped out of the defensive block, intercepting the pass with a heavy tackle.
The ball spilled loose to Bruno Fernandes.
Bruno didn't take a touch. He looked up, identifying the empty space on the left side of Arsenal's defense where Zinchenko was supposed to be. Bruno whipped a precise, first-time pass into that channel.
"United win it back," Murray called, his tempo rising. "Fernandes fires it forward. The space has opened up for Michael Olise. He's in behind!"
Olise drove down the right flank, carrying the ball deep into the Arsenal penalty area. Gabriel tracked across to close him down. Olise didn't shoot. He picked his head up and drilled a low, hard cross across the face of the six-yard box.
Cristiano Ronaldo had sprinted through the center, separating himself from William Saliba. He met the cross in stride, striking it firmly past Aaron Ramsdale into the roof of the net.
"Ronaldo finishes the move! A clinical counter-attack from Manchester United!" Murray shouted over the sudden silence of the home supporters. "Against the run of play, the champions strike first!"
"It isn't against the run of play, John, it's a trap," Hutchison analyzed immediately. "Look at the replay. Zinchenko steps into midfield to dictate the game, which leaves his left-back position completely empty. Marcus Vale knew that. The second United win the ball, Bruno exploits that exact void. Olise runs into it, Gabriel is pulled out of position, and Ronaldo is completely unmarked. It is a devastating tactical blueprint."
Marcus offered a brief, approving nod from the touchline, turning to Michael Carrick to adjust Zakaria's spacing.
Arsenal refused to fold. The Emirates urged them forward. They increased the tempo, shifting the ball faster to stretch United's defensive lines.
Just before half-time, Arsenal found a crack in the opposition.
They overloaded the right side of the pitch. Rice clipped a quick pass to Saka, drawing Shaw out of position. Saka played a rapid one-two combination with Ben White, dragging Kim Min-jae across. For a fraction of a second, Ødegaard managed to slip a yard away from McTominay in the penalty area. Saka cut the ball back, and Ødegaard struck a curling, first-time shot that bent past De Gea and into the far corner.
"Arsenal level it up!" Murray roared. "A brilliant, flowing move, and the Emirates erupts!"
"They finally moved the ball fast enough to break the marking," Hutchison noted. "They pulled Shaw and Kim Min-jae out of the center, and Ødegaard found the tiny pocket of space he needed. Brilliant football."
Marcus did not react emotionally. He simply adjusted his tie, making a mental note of the slight gap between his center-back and full-back that Arsenal had managed to exploit.
The first half ended 1-1.
The second half developed into a tense, high-level chess match. Arsenal maintained total control of possession. United maintained total control of the space. The tackles became heavier. The crowd grew increasingly anxious as the minutes ticked by.
In the sixty-fifth minute, Marcus turned to his bench. He was ready to alter the dynamic.
The fourth official raised the electronic board, signaling a four-man substitution that completely changed United's profile.
Donny van de Beek replaced Bruno Fernandes, bringing relentless one-touch movement to the midfield. James Garner replaced McTominay, providing fresh energy to track Ødegaard. Diogo Dalot replaced Wan-Bissaka to offer a greater attacking threat from deep. Loïs Openda replaced Olise, adding raw pace to the forward line. Ten minutes later, Mason Greenwood came on for Khvicha.
Arsenal's defenders had spent an hour dealing with intricate wing play. Now, they were suddenly faced with Openda and Greenwood making continuous, blistering runs in behind their high defensive line.
The fresh legs fractured Arsenal's rhythm.
In the seventy-eighth minute, United struck again.
Ronaldo, recognizing that Saliba was stepping up to compress the space, dropped five yards deeper into the midfield to receive a pass from Van de Beek.
"Ronaldo drops deep," Murray described. "He turns. Saliba has followed him. The space is there..."
As Saliba stepped forward with Ronaldo, Openda recognized the opening. The Belgian forward ignited, sprinting into the gap in the center of Arsenal's defense. Ronaldo didn't look up. He simply spun a perfectly weighted pass straight through the defensive line.
"Openda is through!" Murray yelled. "He has the pace, he has the angle..."
Openda drove into the penalty area, opened his body, and slotted a cool, low finish past Ramsdale into the bottom corner.
"Manchester United retake the lead! Devastating execution!"
"It's the intelligence of Ronaldo that makes that goal," Hutchison explained. "He knows Openda is faster than the Arsenal defenders. By dropping deep, Ronaldo acts as the bait. He pulls Saliba out of the back line. The moment Saliba steps out, Openda runs into the hole, and the pass is flawless. Arsenal are cut wide open."
Arteta threw his arms up in frustration, turning to his bench to ready his own attacking substitutions.
Arsenal threw everything forward in the final ten minutes. They committed their full-backs high up the pitch. They abandoned their defensive shape in a desperate search for an equalizer. They launched crosses into the box, but Maguire and Kim Min-jae headed everything clear. Garner tackled relentlessly in the midfield.
In the eighty-ninth minute, Arsenal overcommitted on a corner kick.
Maguire rose highest, powering a header out of the United penalty area. The ball fell to Dalot. Dalot took one touch, looked up, and saw the entire Arsenal half completely exposed.
He drove a long, raking pass over the top of the retreating Arsenal defenders.
Ronaldo had anticipated the clearance. He timed his run perfectly, staying just onside as he raced past midfield.
"Ronaldo is clear," Murray shouted, the anticipation cresting. "Arsenal have pushed too many men forward! It's just him and Ramsdale!"
Ronaldo carried the ball into the penalty area. Ramsdale rushed off his line, attempting to make himself big. Ronaldo did not hesitate. He faked a shot with his right foot, dropping Ramsdale to the turf, shifted the ball to his left, and fired it into the empty net.
"Game, set, and match!" Murray announced as the United away end descended into delirium. "Cristiano Ronaldo with his second of the afternoon! That is his eighth league goal in just four matches this season! Incredible numbers!"
"You cannot leave yourselves exposed like that against this team," Hutchison said simply. "They absorb your pressure, they wait for you to make a mistake, and then they punish you with devastating speed. Three goals from three counter-attacks."
The final whistle blew shortly after.
Arsenal 1, Manchester United 3.
Mikel Arteta walked toward the halfway line, his face a picture of frustration. He had fallen perfectly into the trap. Marcus walked out to meet him. They shook hands—a brief clash of two tactical obsessives. Arteta offered a tight nod of respect. Marcus returned it before turning away.
Down near the corner flag, Ronaldo stood before the traveling Manchester United supporters, raising both arms in the air, soaking in the applause. He had scored twice and assisted once.
Thirty minutes later, the media room inside the Emirates was packed.
Marcus sat behind the microphones. His expression was neutral.
"Marcus, an impressive victory," a journalist began. "But some might say sitting deep and relying on counter-attacks isn't the style expected of the reigning champions. You let Arsenal have over sixty percent possession today. Does the lack of control concern you?"
Marcus looked at the journalist. He didn't adjust the microphone.
"We scored three goals," Marcus replied dryly. "They scored one. That is all I needed from this match."
He stood up and walked out of the press room, leaving the journalists to argue over the details.

@Tactical_Times: Marcus Vale's counter-attacking structure is flawless. He didn't care about possession. He just waited for Arsenal's shape to break. Masterclass.
@CFC_Blue: I'm actually terrified of this United team. They don't even look like they're trying and they win 3-1 at the Emirates.
@Ronaldo_Prime: 8 goals in 4 games!!! Pessi could never do this in the Premier League. The true Emperor of Europe!
@Arsenal_FanTV_Fan: We had 65% possession and did absolutely nothing with it. Vale played us like a fiddle.
@Utd_Analytics: Sitting deep, drawing the press, and launching Olise and Openda into the empty spaces. Vale's tactical blueprint is just too good.
@City_BlueMoon: Hate to admit it, but Vale is a genius. 12 points out of 12. Looks like we have a massive title race again.
@MemeUtd: Arteta: "We will dominate the ball and invert the full-backs." Marcus Vale: "Cool. We'll take the 3 points."
@Leo_LM10_CFC: Rigged league. Defenders just let Penaldo score. Meanwhile, Messi actually creates chances and plays beautiful football.
@Gooner_Daily: Saliba got completely dragged out of position for that Openda goal. Ronaldo's IQ is just unfair.
@Utd_Voice: 12 points from 4 games. We aren't just defending the title, we are walking it.
@LFC_RedMen: United are so boring to watch but they just don't lose. It's Mourinho on steroids.

@Cristiano_King: 38 years old. Top scorer in the hardest league in the world. 8 goals in 4 games. No one comes close.
@Tactics_Nerd: The 4-2-2-2 shift in the second half broke Arsenal. Van de Beek's movement completely disrupted Rice's defensive rhythm.
@Gooner_Talk: We need to talk about Zinchenko. Every time he went forward, there was a massive hole. Vale targeted it relentlessly.
@Bundesliga_Insider: Watching Openda thrive in the Premier League is beautiful. Vale knows exactly how to use his pace.
@Messi_The_God: 8 tap-ins. Zero World Cups. I know who my GOAT is. 🇦🇷
@Ronaldo_Stats: Cristiano Ronaldo goal contributions this season: 8 goals, 2 assists in 4 games. United points: 12. Unstoppable.
