Manchester United Revival

Chapter 172: The Sixth Crown

The final blast of the referee's whistle did not trigger the same overwhelming, tear-soaked relief that had swallowed Old Trafford weeks earlier. The Premier League title had broken a decade of suffering. The FA Cup, secured against the noisy neighbors under the Wembley arch, sparked something different.

Manchester United had just claimed their sixth trophy of the campaign. The domestic dominance was absolute. Beating Pep Guardiola's Manchester City 3-1 felt less like a relief and more like a definitive statement of ownership.

Down the pitch transformed into a vibrant, chaotic party. Bruno Guimarães danced near the corner flag, swinging a red shirt above his head. Cristiano Ronaldo walked across the grass with his chest puffed out, flashing a brilliant, arrogant smile toward the designated City end, soaking in the chorus of boos before turning to embrace Diogo Dalot.

Standing near the technical area, the managerial reaction remained grounded. A polite, firm handshake was exchanged with Guardiola. A brief nod of respect passed between them. Walking onto the pitch, hands remained buried in suit pockets.

Navigating the celebrating players, a few pats on the back were offered.

Michael Carrick jogged over, holding a discarded water bottle. "Six down."

"One more to go."

The traditional climb up the famous Wembley steps commenced. Navigating the concrete stairs toward the Royal Box, the squad moved with the confidence of seasoned winners. Silver medals were draped around necks. Jokes were shared with the attending dignitaries.

Reaching the center of the balcony, Harry Maguire grabbed the silver handles of the FA Cup.

Waiting for the squad to gather tightly around him, the club captain lifted the lid off the trophy, placing it firmly on David de Gea's head like a silver crown. The goalkeeper laughed, throwing his arms up. Hoisting the base of the cup high into the air, Maguire roared into the afternoon sky.

Silver ribbons fluttered in the breeze. Pyrotechnics exploded from the stadium roof. The red half of Wembley launched into a deafening rendition of Glory, Glory, Man United.

Descending into the dressing room an hour later, the atmosphere abandoned all professional restraint.

Bass-heavy music rattled the locker doors. Champagne sprayed freely across the room, soaking the walls, the ceiling, and anyone foolish enough to stand near the center. Entering the room, a heavy spray of sparkling wine immediately caught the shoulder of the manager's dark suit.

Wiping a stray drop from his cheek, the ruined jacket was ignored.

"Boss!" Khvicha shouted, sliding across the wet floor on his knees holding a speaker.

Ronaldo sat on a bench in the corner, holding his phone, recording the chaos with a wide grin. Bruno Fernandes stood on a table, singing loudly in Portuguese. The entire squad radiated the confidence of a team that had forgotten the bitter taste of defeat. They were untouchables.

Leaving the dressing room to the players, the short walk to the team bus provided a brief moment of quiet. The domestic season was officially conquered. The FA Cup joined the Premier League, the Carabao Cup, the Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Community Shield.

Six trophies secured. The flight to Istanbul waited.

As the team coach departed Wembley, navigating through throngs of celebrating supporters, the digital world was already descending into anarchy.

@UnitedStandMUFC

WE BEAT THEM IN THEIR OWN BACKYARD. THE TREBLE IS ALIVE. THE SEXTUPLE IS COMPLETE. CITY FANS ARE CRYING ALL THE WAY BACK TO STOCKPORT!

@City_Chief

Absolutely robbed. United sat back, played anti-football, and relied on rehearsed set-piece tricks to win a cup final. Two goals from corners. Disgraceful way to play the game.

@MarkGoldbridge

Replying to @City_Chief

Anti-football? Mate, we put three past you. We dismantled your defensive structure. Cry more. Your bald fraud got out-tacticed by a bloke who drinks coffee and looks like he needs a nap.

@AfcVip

I hate United with a burning passion, but going unbeaten in the league and then beating City in a cup final is a ridiculous flex. They own this country right now.

@LFC_AnfieldVoice

Six trophies in one season is just stat-padding. Nobody cares about the Carabao Cup or the Community Shield. It's just a standard double so far.

@UTDTrey

Replying to @LFC_AnfieldVoice

You guys throw a parade when you win the Carabao Cup. Shut up. We are completing football while you struggle to qualify for the Europa Conference League.

@TheEuropeanLad

The tactical shift from Marcus Vale today was terrifying. Pep prepared for relational football, and Vale just hit him with two brand new set-piece routines that City had never seen before. He treats cup finals like training drills.

@MCFC_BlueMoon

The referee was wearing a United shirt. Clear foul on Dias for the second goal. The agenda to give Ronaldo another trophy is sickening.

@RedDevil_Central

Replying to @MCFC_BlueMoon

Dias got spun like a washing machine. Hold the L.

@Chelsea_Pride

At least we don't have to play them again this season. Watching United lift trophy after trophy is making me ill.

As the evening progressed, the timeline shifted away from the Manchester Derby.

With the domestic season concluded, the Ballon d'Or race officially narrowed down to two names. The eternal rivals found themselves deadlocked.

@StatmanDave

The 2023 Ballon d'Or race is going to be a bloodbath.

Lionel Messi: World Cup, Ligue 1, French Super Cup. 63 G+A.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Community Shield. 74 G+A.

@MessiEra_10

The debate is over. Messi won the World Cup. He completed football. The World Cup is the ultimate prize in the sport. Nothing Ronaldo does in club football can ever match lifting the trophy in Qatar. Give him his 7th Ballon d'Or.

@CR7_GoatZone

Replying to @MessiEra_10

Are you blind? Ronaldo has SIX trophies this season. He has 63 goals ALONE. Add the 11 assists and he destroys Messi's stats. Plus, Ronaldo literally eliminated Messi in the Champions League Round of 16! Head-to-head, Ronaldo sent him packing!

@Argentina_Glory

Replying to @CR7_GoatZone

PSG is a broken club. Messi carried Argentina on his back. A 7-game tournament matters more than beating Fulham and Southampton in the league.

@UTDTrey

Replying to @Argentina_Glory

"7 game tournament" exactly. The Ballon d'Or is for the entire SEASON. Ronaldo has been dominating the hardest league in the world for 10 months. Messi ghosts in Ligue 1 and gets eliminated early in the Coupe de France. Levels.

@BarcaFan_99

Messi had the greatest individual tournament in World Cup history. Ronaldo got benched by Portugal during the World Cup. The context matters.

@RonaldoZone

Replying to @BarcaFan_99

And then Ronaldo went back to Manchester, scored 41 league goals, 16 Champions League goals, and won six trophies. Messi stat-pads against Angers.

@FootballFactly

Cristiano Ronaldo currently has 16 goals in the Champions League this season. He is just one goal away from tying his own all-time record of 17 goals in a single UCL campaign again. If he scores in Istanbul, does he secure the Ballon d'Or?

@PSG_Ultras

Messi didn't even try for us after the World Cup. He walked around the pitch. Ronaldo is 38 and sprinting 90 minutes in an FA Cup final. Respect to the Portuguese.

@Pessi_Tears

Messi fans bringing up the World Cup because their guy literally won nothing else of value. He lost the Coupe de France. He got embarrassed in the Champions League BY RONALDO. He plays in a farmers league.

@Messi_The_Goat

Replying to @Pessi_Tears

World. Cup. Winner. Cry louder.

@Tactical_Nerd

You have to look at the systems. Messi operates as a pure playmaker now. His underlying progression stats are insane. Ronaldo is the tip of the spear in Marcus Vale's machine. United creates countless chances, and Ronaldo finishes them. They play different roles.

@UnitedStandMUFC

Replying to @Tactical_Nerd

"The system creates chances." Yeah, and Ronaldo finishes 63 of them. Put any other striker in there and they miss half of those. His movement today for the first goal was pure genius.

@MadridXtra

Ronaldo having 63 goals and 11 assists at 38 years old is a biological anomaly. If he wins the Champions League, making it 7 trophies in one season, the journalists have to vote for him. A 6-6 tiebreaker decided by a Septuple season would be movie script material.

@FCB_Catalunya

Give the award to Messi. The World Cup holds more weight. Cannavaro didn't have crazy stats in 2006, but he won the WC. Modric in 2018. The tournament decides the award in a World Cup year.

@CR7_UCL_King

Replying to @FCB_Catalunya

Modric won in 2018 without winning the WC because of his club season. Ronaldo has SIX CLUB TROPHIES. He is unbeaten in the Premier League. Unbeaten!

@TheEuropeanLad

The toxicity between the two fanbases right now is off the charts. If Ronaldo scores the winner in the Champions League final, Twitter servers will literally melt.

@BanterFC

Messi fans watching Ronaldo lift his 6th trophy of the season while Messi gets booed by his own fans in Paris.

@NeutralFan99

Can we just appreciate both? We are watching the two greatest players of all time fighting for the ultimate tiebreaker in the twilight of their careers. It's beautiful.

@UTD_Faithful

No. Ronaldo is better.

Stretford Paddock Live Reaction

Stephen Howson sitting at a desk, wearing a red United shirt, looking exhausted but euphoric.

"Six trophies. I'm losing count. I actually have to write them down on a piece of paper so I don't forget one. We just beat Pep Guardiola in a cup final, and it didn't even look like we were struggling. Marcus Vale literally invented a new corner routine just to mess with City's zonal marking. The man is a psychopath. And Ronaldo! Sixty-three goals! Give him the Ballon d'Or. I don't care about the World Cup. Doing this in the Premier League at thirty-eight is the greatest achievement in sports history."

Ty standing outside the Emirates, shaking his head.

"Look, you have to hold your hands up. United are a machine. They don't lose. But the media bias is disgusting. When we went invincible, they said we drew too many games. United go invincible and suddenly Marcus Vale is the greatest manager since sliced bread. And the refereeing today? Disgraceful. City got robbed."

Comments:

u/WorldCupEnjoyer: It has to be Messi. The World Cup was the only thing missing from his cabinet. He dragged that Argentina team to the final and scored twice in the biggest game of the century. The narrative is too strong for the journalists to ignore.

u/Manc_Born: Narrative over actual performance across 10 months? He has 16 goals in the Champions League alone. He beat Messi head-to-head when United played PSG. If club football means anything, Ronaldo wins it.

u/Ligue1_Watcher: To be fair, Messi was incredible before the World Cup. He was assisting Mbappe every week. After Qatar, the whole PSG team collapsed. You can't blame Messi for the RO16 exit. United were just vastly superior tactically.

u/CR7_Fanboy_99: "Vastly superior tactically" is exactly the point. Ronaldo adapted to Marcus Vale's system perfectly. Messi just walked around waiting for the ball. Ronaldo presses when asked to, he makes decoy runs, he creates space. The 63 goals are just the bonus.

u/NeutralObserver: If United lose the Champions League final to City, Messi wins the Ballon d'Or. If United win the Champions League and Ronaldo scores, Ronaldo wins the Ballon d'Or. It all comes down to Istanbul.

u/City_Tears: Ronaldo's goals today were down to the manager. That corner routine was a coaching masterpiece, not individual brilliance.

u/RedDevil_Central: > You still have to attack the space and finish the header. Cry more. Manchester is Red.

The arguments regarding individual awards eventually looped back to the collective reality facing the football club. Six pieces of silverware sat in the trophy room. The domestic campaign was exhausted.

One final fixture remained on the global calendar.

@MarkGoldbridge

I am turning my phone off for the next week. I cannot handle the stress. We are one game away from an invincible seven-trophy season. Man City again stand between us and immortality.

@SkySportsNews

Manchester United lift the FA Cup, completing the domestic sweep. Next stop: Istanbul. The UEFA Champions League Final against Manchester City.

@UTDTrey

SEVEN TROPHIES. WE ARE GOING TO COMPLETE FOOTBALL. THERE WILL BE NOTHING LEFT TO ACCOMPLISH.

@BarstoolFootball

If Marcus Vale wins seven trophies without losing a single game, they should just hand him the keys to the sport and shut the whole thing down. You can't beat the game on 100% completion.

@PieriCousin

The scary part isn't that United are winning everything. The scary part is that they look bored doing it. They beat City today and just walked off the pitch like they had finished a light training session.

@UnitedStandMUFC

I don't care if it's ugly. I don't care if we win with a 90th-minute deflection off Harry Maguire's shin. Just win the game. Bring me the seventh trophy.

@TheEuropeanLad

Cristiano Ronaldo returning to United, linking up with a manager nobody believed in, to win seven trophies and potentially steal the 7th Ballon d'Or from Messi in the same year Messi won the World Cup... They will make documentaries about this season for the next fifty years.

The digital noise raged endlessly into the night. Fanbases tore into each other with relentless toxicity, debating statistics, trophies, historical merit, and individual greatness. The internet fractured into warring factions, unable to reconcile the sheer absurdity of the unfolding campaign.

Miles away from the digital chaos, the Manchester United squad boarded their private flight back to the northwest. The FA Cup sat securely in a specialized travel case near the front of the cabin.

The celebrations had concluded. The alcohol was put away.

Looking out the small oval window of the aircraft, watching the city lights of London fade into the dark landscape below, the focus narrowed into a singular, sharp point. The domestic battles were officially committed to history. The invincible league campaign, the cup finals, the tactical dismantling of Pep Guardiola—it all served simply as the preamble.

The ultimate objective, established on the very first day inside a skeptical press conference room, finally demanded the stage.

Istanbul awaited.
