Manchester United Revival

Chapter 131: The Aftermath

The final whistle was still echoing around Old Trafford when the players began to leave the pitch. The stands emptied slowly, with fans staying behind to sing into the cold night air.

Down in the tunnel, the bright lights of the media zone waited. Antonio Conte stood in front of the sponsor board. He looked exhausted, his tie loose as he rubbed a hand over his face. A reporter held a microphone toward him.

"Antonio, a tough night for your team," the reporter said. "Three-nil. Where do you feel the game was lost?"

Conte shook his head and looked directly into the camera. "We played our game. We kept the shape. For thirty minutes, we did well. But then, you see what happens. We were defeated by Cristiano Ronaldo, just like last season."

The reporter nodded. "He was the difference tonight?"

"He is always the difference," Conte said, his voice flat and honest. "When you play against a team that has him, you must understand the reality. You are already one goal down before the referee even blows the whistle. You just have to hope you can score two. Tonight, we could not."

Conte gave a brief nod and walked away, disappearing down the corridor.

A few moments later, Marcus Vale stepped up to the same board. He stood with his hands in his pockets, posture relaxed and that lazy, comfortable smile on his face.

"Marcus, a massive win to extend the unbeaten run," the reporter began. "Ronaldo with a hat-trick, including a scorpion kick. Have you ever seen anything like it?"

"It was a good goal," Marcus said simply. "He saw the ball, he reacted, he scored. We train for quick reactions. I am glad he executed it well."

The reporter smiled, used to Marcus downplaying incredible moments. "Yesterday he won his sixth Ballon d'Or. Today he scores a hat-trick like that. A lot of people are saying this finally settles the GOAT debate. What are your thoughts on that?"

Marcus looked at the reporter, tilting his head slightly to the side. "The GOAT debate," he repeated slowly. "People love to talk. They love to argue. It is a never-ending debate. It will go on for eternity. Some will say one name, some will say the other."

Marcus paused and let out a small breath of a laugh. "All I can say is this," he continued, his tone turning casual but razor-sharp. "It is easier to be Messi than to be Ronaldo."

The reporter's eyes went wide and he opened his mouth to ask a follow-up, but Marcus was already walking away. He offered a small wave over his shoulder and vanished into the dressing room.

**Sky Sports Studio**

Up in the broadcasting studio overlooking the pitch, David Jones sat between Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher. The screens behind them showed replays of the scorpion kick on a loop.

"Well, a breathtaking night at Old Trafford," David Jones said to the camera. "Manchester United win three-nil. And Roy, we have to start with the man of the hour. Cristiano Ronaldo."

Roy Keane leaned forward on the desk, wearing a sharp suit but with his face as serious as ever. "We talked about this last season, David. We sat here and we debated who the best player in the Premier League was. People were shouting for Mo Salah. They said Salah was the best in the world."

Jamie Carragher shifted in his seat, already preparing his defense.

"That debate is over," Keane said, pointing a finger at the desk. "It is settled once and for all. What we saw tonight is greatness. To do this, at his age, in this league? At that age. There is no comparison."

"Hold on, Roy," Carragher interrupted, waving a hand. "You have to look at the whole picture. Salah's overall game is different. His pressing, the way he creates for others, the system he plays in. Salah gives you more across the full ninety minutes."

Keane turned his head slowly to look at Carragher. "Did Mo Salah score a scorpion kick tonight, Jamie?"

"That's just one goal, Roy," Carragher argued.

"Did Mo Salah walk out with his sixth Ballon d'Or before kickoff?" Keane shot back, his voice rising. "No. When you need a goal, when the game is tight, when you need someone to put the ball in the back of the net... who do you want? You want Ronaldo. Salah is a fantastic player. But Ronaldo is on a completely different planet."

"Salah breaks records every week!" Carragher pushed back. "He is a winger scoring striker numbers!"

"And Ronaldo is a machine," Keane replied bluntly. "He doesn't just score. He wins. He drags the team with him. Look at the mentality."

David Jones raised his hands to calm them down. "Alright, let's look at the bigger picture. Marcus Vale just gave a very interesting quote in the tunnel. He was asked if this settles the overall GOAT debate. Does this prove Ronaldo is better than Messi?"

Carragher shook his head immediately. "No. No, it doesn't. Listen, Ronaldo is the greatest goalscorer of all time. I give him that. But Messi is a natural genius. Messi controls the tempo of the entire game. The way he dribbles, the way he passes... Messi was born with magic in his boots. Ronaldo is pure hard work."

Keane rolled his eyes. "Here we go with the magic. Let me tell you some facts, Jamie. Ronaldo went to England. He conquered it. He went to Spain. He conquered it. He went to Italy. He conquered it. He proved he can do it in completely different environments, under different managers, in different cultures. He stepped out of his comfort zone."

"Messi doesn't need to leave his comfort zone because he is the system!" Carragher countered loudly.

"It is easier to do it when the whole club is built around you from the time you are a boy. Ronaldo adapted. And what he is doing right now, at Old Trafford, under Marcus Vale... it is historic. End of story."

David Jones looked at the camera with a small smile. "I don't think we are going to solve this tonight. But what a performance from Manchester United."

**The United Stand - YouTube Live**

Mark Goldbridge sat in his home studio. The Manchester United badge glowed on the wall behind him. He wore a red United jersey with headphones clamped over his ears and leaned right into the microphone, his face red with excitement.

"I am telling you right now, that is the greatest thing I have ever seen!" Goldbridge shouted, throwing his hands in the air. "Get the tea on! Get the biscuits out! We are massive!"

He clicked a button on his computer, playing the highlights on the screen next to him. "Look at this," he said, his voice lowering to a dramatic whisper as the video showed the pre-match presentation. "He walks out. The stadium goes silent. Six Ballon d'Ors on a table. The disrespect to the rest of the league. Tears in my eyes, lads. Literal tears."

He clicked forward to the first goal. "The hang time! He is literally floating! Lenglet is down there asking for an autograph while Ronaldo is in the clouds! Unbelievable."

He skipped to the third goal and paused it right as the ball dropped behind Ronaldo. "And then this happens," Goldbridge said, shaking his head. "A scorpion kick. Against Antonio Conte. I was ready to celebrate a tap-in. He gives us a scorpion kick. Give him the Puskas award right now. Shut down the voting. It's over."

The chat on the side of his screen moved incredibly fast. Thousands of people were typing. Goldbridge leaned forward to read the super chats.

"Alright, let's get to the super chats," he said.

A bright orange banner popped up on the screen.

Liam Davies - £5.00

Mark, is Marcus Vale Sir Alex reincarnated? The way he has this team playing is insane.

"Liam, thank you for the five pounds," Goldbridge said. "Look, let's not get carried away. Sir Alex is Sir Alex. But... Marcus is cooking. He is absolutely cooking. The man has completely changed the culture. Nobody is bigger than the team, but he knows how to use his stars. He is a tactical genius."

A green banner popped up.

Sarah Jenkins - £2.00

Do we need to buy a striker in Jan if Openda is injured?

"Cheers for the two pounds, Sarah," Goldbridge replied. "No. No panic buying. Openda is out for one game with a minor issue. We have Ronaldo. We have Greenwood. Khvicha can play up there if needed. We have depth. Trust the squad."

A red banner flashed.

David Arthur - £10.00

Roy Keane just completely cooked Carragher on Sky Sports. Thoughts?

Goldbridge burst out laughing and clapped his hands together. "David, mate, thank you for the tenner! I saw a clip of it on Twitter! Keane absolutely destroyed him. Carragher sitting there talking about pressing while Ronaldo is doing scorpion kicks. Keane is United through and through. He spit pure facts."

A blue banner appeared.

Tom Baker - £5.00

Are we winning the league, Mark? Be honest.

Goldbridge took a deep breath and looked serious. "Tom, thanks for the fiver. I won't say we are winning it. It is only October. City are right behind us. But... we are contenders. Real contenders. If we keep playing like this, nobody wants to come to Old Trafford."

A yellow banner popped up.

Jack Wilson - £2.00

Did you hear that Messi quote from Marcus in the tunnel?

Goldbridge grinned widely. "Jack, thanks for the two quid. Mate, Marcus is a menace. 'It is easier to be Messi than Ronaldo.' He just dropped a nuke on the internet and walked away. Elite mentality. He knows exactly what he is doing. He is protecting his player and riling up the rivals. I love my manager!"

**Outside Old Trafford**

The air outside the stadium was freezing. Fans poured out of the exits, their breath turning into white mist under the streetlights. The smell of fried onions and cheap burgers filled the air from the food vans parked along Sir Matt Busby Way. The mood stayed electric.

Near the East Stand, two teenagers wearing matching black United coats jumped around. One of them kicked an empty paper cup into the air, turned his back, jumped, and tried to flick it backward with his heel. He missed completely and nearly fell over. His friend doubled over laughing and pointed at him.

"You're not him, bro!" the friend laughed. "You're not him!"

By one of the merchandise stalls, a father stood holding a red and yellow scarf and wrapped it tightly around his young daughter's neck.

"Did you see the Ballon d'or, dad?" the little girl asked, her nose red from the cold.

"I saw them, sweetie," the father smiled, fixing her hat. "All six of them."

A group of university students walked past the tram stop with their arms around each other's shoulders. They shouted the "Viva Ronaldo" chant at the top of their lungs, completely off-key and ignoring the people staring at them.

Near the brick wall of the stadium, a young guy stood with his phone pressed hard against his ear and a hand over his other ear to block out the noise. "I'm telling you, you idiot!" he shouted into the phone. "A scorpion kick! You decided to stay home and watch a movie with your girlfriend, and you missed a scorpion kick! Don't talk to me!"

Over by the main road, a young boy stood on his tiptoes holding a piece of cardboard covered in plastic wrap to protect it from the rain. It read, *Ronaldo, can I have your shirt?* He hadn't gotten the shirt but wore a massive, gap-toothed smile on his face anyway, happy just to have seen his hero score three times.

Near a hot dog stand, the vendor handed over the last sausage to a man in a flat cap. "That's me done for the night," the vendor said, wiping down his counter. "Completely sold out. Best business I've had since 2013."

"Good football makes people hungry," the man in the flat cap said, taking a bite.

Further down the road, a lone Spurs fan walked quickly toward the train station. He wore a heavy jacket zipped all the way up to hide his white shirt and shook his head while looking at his shoes, just trying to get away from the noise as fast as possible.

Near the media entrance, a fan channel had set up a bright ring light. The interviewer held a microphone out to a man who looked to be in his early seventies.

The old man, Thomas, wore a faded, vintage United jacket. His eyes were red as he wiped a tear away from his cheek with the back of a wrinkled hand. "I've been coming here a long time," Thomas said into the microphone, his voice shaky but full of emotion. "I was here in 2008. I saw him hold that Ballon d'Or on this pitch. I saw him leave. I thought those days were gone forever."

The interviewer nodded, letting the man speak.

"We lost our way for a long time," Arthur continued, looking directly into the camera lens. "But tonight... it felt like the old days. The pride is back in this stadium. And I just want to say... if Marcus Vale ever sees this..."

Arthur stopped to take a breath and pointed a finger at the camera. "Thank you, Marcus," he said, his voice cracking slightly. "Thank you for what you've done to this club. You gave us our Manchester United back."

A few people standing nearby clapped for the old man. The cold wind blew down the street, but nobody seemed to feel it.
