Chapter 129: The Shiny Trinket
The calendar hanging on the wall read October 18.
Waking up well before the sun, Marcus found the bedroom biting cold, as the sweltering heat of the summer months was gone now. Sitting on the edge of the mattress, he gazed out the window at the dark, quiet streets of Manchester, watching the autumn wind scatter dry leaves across the empty road.
Rising to his feet, the manager padded into the bathroom to splash freezing water onto his face. Staring into the mirror, his reflection hadn't changed since August, yet the grueling season was already well underway; time always moved significantly faster when a team was consistently winning.
Wandering into the kitchen, he flicked on the kettle before dropping a single tea bag into a ceramic mug. Waiting patiently for the water to boil, he savored the silence of the house.
This remained his favorite time of dayβdevoid of ringing phones, flashing cameras, or chaotic noise, offering nothing but a slow, peaceful start to the morning.
Once the kettle clicked off, he poured the steaming water and leaned casually against the marble counter to take a slow, comforting sip.
The past several weeks had passed in a blur of frantic matches and relentless training sessions. Operating through a massive mid-season timeskip, September came and went, yet their historic unbeaten run stubbornly continued. While suffering a couple of frustrating draws, the squad mostly secured victories by defending ruthlessly and scoring freely.
Consequently, Manchester United sat firmly entrenched at the very top of the Premier League table. Gripping the number one spot tightly with twenty-eight points, the gap between the Red Devils and the chasing pack was steadily growing.
A massive reason for this dominance was Cristiano Ronaldo, who remained in truly incredible form. Scoring towering headers alongside lethal finishes with both his right and left feet, the veteran sat in a fiercely competitive second position across the domestic goal-scoring charts. Every single time he stepped onto the grass, he found a miraculous way to put the ball in the net.
Sitting just barely above him in those same charts was Erling Haaland, as the Manchester City striker continued scoring purely for fun on the other side of town. Currently holding fifteen goals to Ronaldo's fourteen, the Norwegian set a blistering pace, forcing the Portuguese legend to relentlessly chase him week after week.
Closely following the leading duo was Harry Kane; enjoying a fantastic season for Spurs, the English captain currently placed third in the race.
Their success wasn't strictly limited to domestic duties either, as the Champions League group stage marched relentlessly onward.
Playing two more difficult fixtures during the timeskip, the first involved a hostile away trip to Portugal to face Sporting CP. Although the stadium proved incredibly loud, the visitors stayed perfectly calm to secure the win before subsequently grinding out another gritty, physical victory during the reverse fixture against RB Leipzig.
Netting crucial goals in both of those European ties, the iconic forward dominated the continent by becoming the undisputed top goalscorer in the Champions League with eight strikes. He was playing exactly like a man who had nothing left to prove, yet desperately wanted to prove it anyway.
Finishing the last drop of tea, Marcus rinsed the mug quickly and left it on the rack to dry.
Shrugging into his heavy winter coat and snatching up his car keys, it was officially time to go to work. Tomorrow, they hosted Tottenham Hotspur.
The quiet morning drive to the Carrington training ground took exactly thirty minutes. With the radio humming softly in the background, sports channels endlessly dissected the impending clash.
Antonio Conte was bringing his fiery Spurs squad to Old Trafford. Known as a brilliantly smart tactician who demanded extreme hard work, the Italian manager typically deployed a frustrating low block to patiently wait for mistakes before punishing teams severely on the counter-attack.
Parking his Volvo in its designated spot, the United boss entered the comfortably warm main building. Offering a polite good morning to the reception staff, he strolled down the long hallway toward his private office, where he finally shed the heavy coat and took a seat behind his desk.
Booting up the computer to review the day's training schedule, a sharp knock suddenly interrupted the silence.
"Come in," he called out.
Entering the room clutching a thick clipboard, the head of the medical team looked visibly exhausted. "Morning, boss."
"Morning," came the prompt reply. "What is the update?"
"Our long-term injury absentees haven't returned yet," the doctor reported, scanning his notes. "While they are currently doing light work in the gym and some are finally running on the grass, they definitely aren't ready to join full team training."
Nodding in quiet acceptance of the expected news, the manager pressed on. "Who else?"
"Denis Zakaria," the physician revealed with a grimace. "He picked up a frustrating training ground injury yesterday afternoon. Suffering a minor muscle strain in his leg, it will keep him entirely out for a week. He absolutely cannot play tomorrow."
Frowning slightly at the tactical setback, Marcus jotted the Swiss midfielder's name onto a scrap of paper. "Okay. Anyone else?"
"LoΓ―s Openda," the doctor added regretfully. "Complaining about some lingering soreness this morning, we checked him out thoroughly. Although it is a very minor injury with nothing to worry about long-term, it will unfortunately keep him out of the upcoming fixture. We definitely need to rest him."
Writing the Belgian striker's name right next to Zakaria's, the coach nodded. "Understood. Thank you."
Once the medical chief exited the room, the tactician evaluated the damage. Staring at the two names, he knew losing Zakaria meant drastically altering the midfield rotation, while missing Openda removed a crucial pace option in the attack.
However, the squad remained impressively deep. Boasting hungry players who trained relentlessly every single day while memorizing the complex tactics, replacements would simply step up and execute the required job.
Spending the remainder of his quiet morning analyzing video clips of Spurs, he meticulously studied exactly how they defended against elite teams.
Noting precisely how quickly they transitioned the ball forward to locate Kane and Heung-Min Son, he filled his notebook with strategic countermeasures while casually draining a bottle of water.
By one in the afternoon, it was officially time for the mandatory pre-match press conference.
Escorted from his office by a club media officer, the manager could hear the loud chatter of eager reporters before even reaching the heavy double doors.
Stepping inside to a blinding barrage of camera flashes, he ascended the short steps to claim his seat behind the long desk. Adjusting the sponsor microphone, his gaze swept across the packed room; massive fixtures invariably drew a massive, hungry crowd.
"We will officially start the questions now," the media officer announced clearly. "Please wait patiently for the microphone."
Promptly, a journalist situated in the middle row raised a hand and stood up.
"Marcus, good afternoon," the reporter greeted smoothly. "Yesterday evening, Cristiano Ronaldo famously won the Ballon d'Or. How do you personally feel about his incredible achievement?"
Leaning back comfortably into his chair, the manager plucked a stray pen from the desk, twirling it loosely between his fingers. As a lazy, remarkably relaxed smile spread across his face, he tilted his head to the side and allowed his eyes to fall half-closed, looking unbothered.
"Ahaha~," he let out a slow, breathy laugh, waving the pen through the air like a miniature conductor's baton. "A shiny golden ball. Isn't that just a delightful little trinket?"
Glancing around in confusion, the gathered press corps had fully expected a standard, boring platitude regarding hard work and dedication.
Instead, the tactician kept smiling lazily, gently tapping the plastic pen against his chin. "I suppose everyone likes a nice decoration for their house. Yes, a very pretty piece of molded metal. It will definitely look very nice sitting quietly on a dusty shelf somewhere. Maybe it will even catch the light when the sun shines perfectly through the window. How wonderful for him."
Speaking in a remarkably light, almost patronizingly teasing tone, the man sounded exactly like a bored antique appraiser evaluating a child's toy, rather than a professional manager discussing the single biggest individual honor in world football.
Stunned silence blanketed the room as the frowning reporter gripped his microphone tighter.
"You honestly don't seem very happy about it," the journalist noted carefully.
Halting the rhythmic tapping instantly, the lazy smile vanished from Marcus's face like a blown-out candle. Sitting sharply forward, he slapped the pen entirely flat onto the wooden desk. As his dark eyes grew incredibly sharp and ice-cold, the playful, teasing atmosphere evaporated in a terrifying millisecond.
"I have said it before, and I will gladly say it again," he stated, his voice completely flat and entirely devoid of emotion. "It is a PR award. I have no interest in those types of subjective awards."
Letting the brutal dismissal hang heavily in the tense air, the reporters immediately began typing furiously on their laptops.
"We inherently play a team game," the boss continued ruthlessly. "If executives want to hand out shiny trophies based strictly on media votes and PR campaigns, they can happily do that. However, it means nothing out on the grass. Next question."
A woman seated near the front cautiously stood up next. "Can you provide us with an injury update ahead of the crucial Spurs game? Are there any pressing new concerns?"
Maintaining a rigid, upright posture, the manager delivered the facts. "Our long-term injury absences still haven't returned yet, as they are currently finishing their recovery work. As for new issues, Denis Zakaria unfortunately picked up a training ground injury that will sideline him for an entire week. Additionally, LoΓ―s Openda suffered a minor injury that will rule him out of this specific fixture. Neither will be available tomorrow."
Another hand shot up from the back. "Antonio Conte is globally known for setting his stubborn teams up to be incredibly difficult to break down. How exactly do you plan to bypass his rigid defensive shape?"
"Patience," came the remarkably simple answer. "Spurs will inevitably put bodies behind the ball to aggressively close the central spaces. In response, we will simply pass the ball and move intelligently. If we cannot discover a gap in the very first minute, we will calmly look again in the second minute. We will happily keep possession until the inevitable gap opens, because we will not rush."
Standing up on the far left side, a new journalist probed. "You are currently enjoying a very long, historic unbeaten run. Does sitting comfortably at the top of the table put extra pressure on the squad to keep winning?"
"No," the tactician denied instantly. "We only care about winning the next game, the streak isn't in our mind while we are playing the game."
Projecting from the very back of the room, the next question addressed a specific threat. "Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son undoubtedly form one of the most lethal partnerships in the entire league. How exactly do you intend to stop them on the counter-attack?"
"By deliberately not giving them the ball," the manager stated matter-of-factly. "If Spurs do not have possession, they cannot counter-attack. The split second we lose the ball, we will counter-press immediately to ruthlessly cut the passing lanes leading to Kane. If the ball does not reach him, he cannot turn. If he cannot turn, he cannot find Son. It is a remarkably simple concept; we just have to execute it perfectly."
A reporter lingering near the aisle offered the final inquiry. "Given the grueling Champions League games you just played against Sporting and Leipzig, are the players feeling fatigued? Will you ultimately be forced to make sweeping changes to the starting eleven?"
"We possess a very full squad," he replied dismissively. "These elite players train rigorously every single day precisely to be ready for this schedule. If someone is genuinely tired, they will sit and rest. If someone is fresh, they will start and play. The team that walks out onto the pitch tomorrow will possess the required energy to win the football match. That is all."
Standing up abruptly, the boss pushed his heavy chair backward.
"Thank you," he muttered, pivoting smoothly to walk right off the stage. Blinding camera flashes chased his shadow as he exited the room.
Strolling back down the quiet hallway toward his private office, he eventually sat behind his desk to gaze out the large window. With the Manchester sky growing noticeably darker, he knew tomorrow would be a brutal tactical battle.
Opening his leather notebook once again, the manager ruthlessly resumed reviewing his meticulous notes on Antonio Conte's rigid defensive structure.
