Chapter 120: Street Level
With the sun up early, Marcus sat on a folding chair behind the bustling camera crew. Wearing a plain white t-shirt and dark jeans, the manager endured the already sweltering outback air.
Standing in front of a sprawling green screen wrapped in a heavy costume, Milly gripped a plastic sword tightly. When a headset-clad director shouted action, the actress swung the weapon and yelled her line before the scene was abruptly cut, prompting a frantic makeup artist to sprint over and wipe sweat from her face.
Watching this repetitive sequence unfold five times, the United boss finally checked his watch. It was barely ten in the morning. Taking a long sip from a plastic water bottle, he observed the crew resetting heavy lights and dragging thick cables across the dirt. Feeling increasingly restless, he stood up and approached a nearby production assistant.
"I am going for a walk," he announced simply.
Receiving a quick nod of acknowledgment, the Portuguese departed the busy set. Strolling down a paved road, the route led away from the dusty fields straight into a small, quiet town. Low, flat houses with tin roofs lined the streets alongside a handful of parked cars, though very few locals were actually outside to brave the heat.
After wandering for twenty minutes, a highly familiar sound broke the silence: the rhythmic thud of a football hitting a chain-link fence.
Following the noise, he discovered a small public park featuring dry, yellow grass and two bare metal goalposts. Five teenagers wearing old, faded replica shirts were busy playing a pickup game, using scattered school bags to mark the makeshift boundary lines.
Observing quietly from the fence line for a moment, the manager eventually unlatched the metal gate and stepped out onto the pitch.
Halting their match immediately, the kids stared at the newcomer.
"Can I play?" he asked.
Holding the scuffed ball, a boy with dyed-blonde hair looked the stranger up and down before offering a casual shrug. "Sure, mate. We need even numbers anyway. You can be on my team."
Jogging to the middle of the pitch, the tactician settled in as the game resumed. Rather than running aggressively, he merely stood in the center circle, patiently waiting for the play to come to him. When an opposing player attempted a remarkably weak pass, the older man stepped forward to easily intercept it.
However, before his boot could even touch the leather, a kid in a red shirt slid recklessly across the dry grass. Executing a hard, crunching tackle, the teenager stole possession instantly.
Losing his balance, the coach stumbled awkwardly but managed to catch himself before hitting the dirt.
Laughing mockingly, the young defender dribbled away. "Nice try, grandpa," he taunted over his shoulder.
Standing perfectly still, the targeted victim looked down at the dead grass, shook his head, and let out a quiet breath.
He decided to actually try.
The next time the ball rolled his way, the manager didn't hesitate. Sprinting toward the pass, he trapped it dead under his right boot just as the boy in the red shirt charged forward for another aggressive tackle.
Dropping his left shoulder to fake a lateral pass, the tactician baited the desperate lunge. As the teenager committed, the older man smoothly dragged the ball behind his own standing leg using the inside of his right foot. Executing a flawless Cruyff turn, he left the young defender tackling empty air and tumbling face-first onto the grass.
Maintaining his forward momentum, he faced a second charging teenager. Pushing the ball slightly outside with his right foot, the Portuguese instantly snapped his ankle to pull it back inside in one blindingly fluid motion. The devastating elastico sent the second defender tripping helplessly over his own feet.
Reaching the edge of the penalty area, two more kids rushed to close down the dangerous space. Without breaking stride, the United boss chipped the ball up into the air, juggled it lightly from his left knee to his right foot, and delicately lifted a rainbow flick straight over the sliding legs of his blonde teammate.
Letting the leather bounce exactly once, he swung his left foot to strike the ball with venomous power. The shot flew straight into the top corner of the metal goalpost, smashing into the chain-link fence behind it with a deafening crash.
Pivoting on his heel, the goalscorer strolled calmly back to the center circle.
Dead silence blanketed the park as the stunned boys simply stared in disbelief.
Sitting on a nearby bench, a teenager slowly lowered the phone he had been using to secretly record the match. Standing up abruptly, he pointed a trembling finger at the pitch.
"Wait," the spectator stammered. "I know you. You're Marcus Vale."
Brushing dry dirt off his knees, the boy in the red shirt frowned. "Who?"
"The manager of Manchester United!" the cameraman yelled, sprinting onto the grass. "You literally won the Champions League!"
Instantly abandoning their game, the teenagers swarmed the tactician, forming a tight circle while simultaneously digging into their pockets for smartphones.
"Are you actually him?" the blonde teammate asked in awe.
Receiving a simple nod of confirmation, the boy in the red shirt looked thoroughly embarrassed. "Can we get a selfie? I'm so sorry I called you grandpa."
Shaking his head slightly, the coach dismissed the apology. "It is fine."
Standing patiently in the middle of the chaotic group, he stared blankly into the various lenses as the kids snapped their photos.
Once the excitement settled, the teenager from the bench spoke up again. "Could you maybe watch us play? Tell us what we're doing wrong?"
Scanning the eager faces, the manager checked his watch and realized he had a bit of time to spare.
"Show me your passing," he instructed.
Lining up quickly, the kids started knocking the ball back and forth. Standing casually with his hands buried in his pockets, the professional monitored their footwork and overall posture.
"Stop," he commanded.
The drills ceased immediately.
Pointing a finger directly at the previous tackler, he offered a strict correction. "You lean backward when you pass, meaning your foot goes completely under the ball. When the ball bounces, it becomes incredibly hard to control. Keep your chest over the ball and strike the absolute middle of it."
Trying the newly prescribed technique, the teenager smiled as the pass stayed perfectly flat on the grass.
"Better," the coach praised.
Transitioning to shooting drills, he watched them take turns blasting the leather toward the empty net.
"You are trying to hit it entirely too hard," he informed the blonde boy. "Because you are tense, you lack accuracy. Relax your leg, use the inside of your foot, and aim strictly for the corners because the middle of the goal is useless."
Moving on to defensive structure, he ordered them not to watch the attacker's feet. Instead, he demanded they lock their eyes on the ball and wait patiently for the opponent to make a mistake rather than diving in early.
Listening intently, the boys executed the tactical instructions flawlessly. The pickup game improved noticeably, yielding much cleaner passes and significantly smarter challenges.
While actively explaining how to stand sideways when defending a tricky winger, a phone buzzed deep in the manager's pocket. Pulling the device out, he read a new text message.
Milly: Where'd you run off to? We're on a break. Get back here.
Typing a rapid reply, he sent confirmation.
Marcus: Coming.
Pocketing the device, he looked back at the grateful teenagers.
"Sorry, boys," he announced gently. "I have to leave."
"Thanks for the top tips, boss!" the kid in the red shirt called out enthusiastically.
"Keep your chest over the ball," the tactician reminded them one last time before turning around and walking out of the dusty park.
Arriving back at the television set, he found the massive crew sitting under large canvas tents, eating catered food from flimsy paper plates. Resting comfortably on a plastic cooler, the actress had finally shed her heavy costume jacket and was happily chugging a bottle of cold water.
Strolling up to her makeshift seat, he waited for her to speak.
"Where'd you disappear to?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.
"I found a public park," he replied simply.
"Did you literally just go stand in a random field and stare at trees?" she teased with a wide grin.
"I played football," came the deadpan response.
Looking critically down at his dark denim outfit, her amusement grew. "In jeans?"
"Yes."
"You're an absolute psychopath," she laughed, standing up to stretch her legs. "Anyway, I'm wrapped for the day. They finally got the shots they needed. Let's go grab some food; I'm bloody starving."
Wandering down to a small, quiet cafe situated near the beach, they claimed an outdoor table to enjoy the cool ocean breeze. Ordering a simple chicken sandwich paired with black coffee, the manager sat across from his date, who opted for a fresh salad and iced tea. Eating in comfortable silence for a while, the blonde eventually broke the quiet.
"Are you losing your mind out here?" she asked curiously. "Just sitting around on set all day doing absolutely nothing?"
"No," he assured her. "It is pleasantly quiet."
"Well, I'll definitely make it up to you tonight," she promised enthusiastically. "There's this massive night market in the city, and we're definitely going. You desperately need to see normal people who aren't holding boom mics."
Driving into Brisbane that evening, the couple discovered the vibrant night market occupying a large open square directly bordering the winding river. Surrounded by hundreds of milling people and flashing neon lights, loud music pumped through towering speakers while the humid air smelled heavily of fried food and burnt sugar.
Grabbing her partner securely by the hand, Milly pulled him effortlessly through the dense, chaotic crowd. Sporting a sleek black dress paired with comfortable white sneakers, she contrasted sharply against his signature dark jacket.
Stopping abruptly at a busy food stall, she purchased a paper tray overflowing with hot chips smothered in melted cheese. Handing one directly to the Portuguese, she watched him chew the greasy snack.
"Good, right?" she demanded.
"Yeah," he admitted.
Wandering past endless stalls selling vintage clothes and cheap jewelry, they eventually reached a loud area dedicated to classic arcade games featuring rows of machines equipped with blinding, flashing lights.
Halting in front of a massive target game, the actress studied the rules. The objective required throwing a heavy baseball to successfully hit a distant bullseye to win a prize, which consisted of various stuffed animals hanging limply from the canvas ceiling.
"Oh, I am absolutely playing this," she declared confidently.
Paying the skeptical stall owner, she received three battered baseballs in return.
Winding up, she threw the first pitch. Completely missing the intended target, the ball slammed harmlessly into the padded back wall.
"You dropped your elbow," her companion critiqued flatly.
"Shut up," she shot back, grabbing the second sphere.
Throwing slightly harder, the projectile clipped the very edge of the target but failed to knock the mechanism backward.
"You need to actually step into the throw," the coach advised clinically.
Taking a deep, stabilizing breath, she stepped aggressively forward and launched the third ball with impressive power. Striking the absolute center of the target, a loud, ringing bell echoed across the busy aisle.
Clapping politely, the stall owner smiled. "Pick a prize, miss."
Scanning the colorful assortment of stuffed animals, she pointed definitively toward a grey koala. Taking the plush toy from the vendor, she turned proudly toward her date.
Holding the stuffed animal up right next to his face, she examined the similarities. The toy possessed completely flat, unblinking black eyes and a single, straight line intended for a mouth.
A loud burst of laughter escaped her lips.
"What is funny?" the manager asked, genuinely confused.
"What's so funny? It's got your exact deadpan face," she gasped, laughing even harder at the uncanny resemblance. "Look at it! It's literally you whenever someone says something stupid."
Staring critically at the plush fabric, he frowned. "It is merely a toy."
"Well, congratulations, mate, you're a father," she cheered, shoving the stuffed marsupial directly into his broad chest.
Accepting his bizarre new fate, the United boss held the stuffed koala securely and stubbornly refused to let it go.
Strolling toward the very edge of the sprawling market, a massive Ferris wheel spun slowly against the dark night sky. Purchasing two tickets, they climbed into a swaying metal cart that quickly lifted them high into the cool air.
Looking out over the glowing city, the vibrant lights reflected beautifully across the dark, rippling water of the river below. As the high-altitude breeze blew loose blonde hair playfully across her face, she leaned her head comfortably against his broad shoulder.
"This is actually really nice," she murmured quietly.
"Yes," he agreed.
Once the gentle ride concluded, they meandered back toward the distant car park. Following a poorly lit path bordered by thick trees on one side and a crumbling brick wall on the other, the peaceful stroll was suddenly interrupted.
Stopping dead in his tracks, the manager stared suspiciously into the gloom.
"What's wrong with you?" his date asked, pausing a few steps ahead.
Pointing an accusatory finger toward a green trash bin resting near the brickwork, he highlighted the threat. Sitting ominously on the plastic rim was a massive spider the size of a standard dinner plate, boasting incredibly thick, hairy legs.
"Oh, it's literally just a Huntsman," she dismissed casually, peering at the monstrous arachnid.
"It is entirely too big," he stated firmly.
"It won't hurt you. Stop being such a baby," she groaned, rolling her eyes in pure exasperation. "Come on."
Marching fearlessly past the infested bin, she left him behind. Waiting for a tense second, the Portuguese finally scurried past the trash can incredibly quickly, keeping maximum possible distance from the eight-legged nightmare.
Driving safely back to the luxury hotel, they rode the silent elevator up to their private suite. Placing the infamous stuffed koala securely on the wooden nightstand, they spent a quiet, intimate night together in the peaceful room.
Because she had the following morning off from shooting, the actress woke her partner up incredibly early.
"We're going for a hike," she announced cheerfully.
Staring groggily at the ceiling, he sighed. "Where?"
"Out in the bush," she declared. "You actually need to see proper Australian nature."
"Will there be native animals actively trying to kill me?"
"Literally every animal can kill you, if you let them."
"Fine, whatever."
Navigating out to a sprawling national park located well beyond the city limits, the landscape shifted dramatically to deep red dirt. Towering trees boasting stark white trunks and pale, rustling leaves dominated the horizon beneath a blisteringly bright sun.
Wearing heavy protective boots and his signature dark clothes, the manager trudged dutifully behind his energetic guide along the narrow, winding dirt path. With the air feeling incredibly dry, the deafening buzz of unseen insects echoed loudly through the surrounding canopy.
Swatting a massive, persistent fly aggressively away from his face, he grumbled.
"The bugs here are incredibly aggressive," he complained.
"Just ignore them, they're completely fine," she advised breezily over her shoulder.
Walking steadily for an hour, the dusty path eventually ascended a steep, rocky hill. Suddenly, a distinct, incredibly fast flapping sound materialized directly above him.
Looking up in alarm, a vicious black-and-white bird dove straight out of the branches, flying aggressively right at his face while clicking its sharp beak loudly near his ear.
Ducking wildly, the tactician waved a defensive arm frantically over his head to ward off the aerial assault. Retreating quickly, the feathered menace flew up into a neighboring tree to watch him with cold, calculating eyes.
"Did you see that?" he demanded breathlessly.
Turning around, his companion frowned. "What are you randomly swinging at?"
"A bird literally just attacked me," he reported grimly.
"Oh my god, it's literally just a magpie," she laughed loudly, spotting the culprit resting in the high branches. "It's swooping season; they get super aggressive about protecting their nests."
"It actively tried to take my eye out," he insisted stubbornly.
"You're being so dramatic," she giggled, thoroughly enjoying his rare discomfort. "It just buzzed you."
"I am not hallucinating," he defended himself. "Maybe I ate something bad. Those salty chips from last night."
"Stop whining and keep walking, tough guy," she ordered, flashing a brilliant smile while grabbing his arm to pull him forward.
Shooting the hostile bird one final, highly suspicious glare, the manager yielded to the command and continued hiking.
An entire peaceful week passed in this exact rhythm. Showing up to the dusty set most days, the United boss claimed his folding chair to quietly watch the actress work her demanding scenes. Sharing intimate meals at the small beachside cafe or ordering lazy room service directly to their hotel suite, the tactician spent any remaining downtime diligently checking tactical emails sent by his coaching staff back in Manchester.
On his final day in sunny Australia, the couple stood closely together inside the busy airport terminal.
Clutching a small, packed travel bag housing the infamous stuffed koala, the manager faced his partner, who wore oversized sunglasses and a loose, comfortable shirt to combat the heat.
"When will you be back in London?" he asked softly.
Reaching up effortlessly, she wrapped both arms securely around the back of his neck to deliver a long, passionate kiss that completely ignored the bustling crowds around them.
"I'll be back in London in a week," she promised against his lips.
"Tell me the exact moment you land."
"Okay," she agreed, stepping back slowly to offer a deeply fond, lingering look. "Have a safe flight. And try not to let any stray magpies take you out on the way to the gate."
Offering a tiny smirk, the manager turned on his heel and walked calmly through the metal security gate, heading back to his footballing empire.

Corporate needs you to find the differences.
@BarstoolFootball
Marcus Vale pulling out Ronaldinho skills in suburban Australia was not on my 2026 bingo card.
@LFCLiam_
A real manager would be at Carrington preparing for the next match, not messing around with teenagers on a dirt pitch in Australia. Unprofessional.
