Manchester United Revival

Chapter 117: Recovery

Stepping out onto the damp grass of the training pitch with his hands buried deep in his coat pockets, Marcus braced against the biting, cold air. The squad was already out there executing their recovery runs. Because there were no heavy drills scheduled today, the starters from the grueling Celtic match simply jogged in wide circles around the pitch to flush the heavy fatigue out of their legs. Football was a relentless cycle; you play, you recover, and you play again.

Watching them move, the manager easily identified who suffered from heavy legs and who still carried residual adrenaline from the massive five-goal victory. Strolling up beside him with a clipboard in hand, Michael Carrick kept his eyes locked on the runners.

"Varane is progressing well with the physios inside the gym," the assistant mentioned quietly.

Offering a sharp nod, his boss replied, "Keep the recovery session to under forty minutes. They don't need extra time on the grass today; they need sleep and good food."

Once the slow laps finally concluded, the athletes gathered near the touchline where the head coach kept his words characteristically brief.

"You did your jobs well in Scotland. Go home, rest your legs, and stay away from the media."

Following the quick dismissal, the players headed straight toward the changing rooms for agonizing ice baths and deep-tissue massages. Retreating back to his private office, he packed up his tactical notes and decided to leave the complex early as well, having specific plans for the evening.

Gliding out of the training ground gates in his dark green Volvo, he headed straight toward a large, upscale supermarket in the quiet suburbs. Since Milly was currently on a brief break from her exhausting press tour for House of the Dragon, she was coming over to his house tonight, and he had promised to cook dinner for her.

Parking the SUV and grabbing a wire shopping basket, he navigated the brightly lit aisles with a highly specific plan. Intending to craft a proper Italian pasta dish entirely from scratch, he swiftly collected garlic, fresh basil, cherry tomatoes, premium olive oil, and some excellent cuts of chicken before grabbing a nice bottle of red wine.

Because the supermarket wasn't completely empty, a few lingering shoppers recognized the famous tactician. When a young man wearing a United scarf politely asked for a photo in the produce aisle, the manager set down a handful of lemons, posed blankly for the camera lens, and moved on with a tiny nod. Approaching the bakery section, a father and his two eager kids intercepted him to request a signature on a spiral notebook.

"Brilliant result at Celtic Park, gaffer," the father praised warmly while the pen scratched across the paper.

"Thank you," came the simple reply as he handed the book back and strolled toward the checkout tills.

After paying for the groceries, he exited through the sliding glass doors into the chilly afternoon air and crossed the wet tarmac toward his vehicle. Popping the trunk, he began carefully loading the brown paper bags inside.

"Hey, Vale!"

Pausing mid-motion, Marcus turned his head to find an annoyed man in his late thirties wearing a light blue Manchester City jacket marching aggressively across the parking lot toward him. A few other nearby shoppers, including several United fans who had just left the store, stopped dead in their tracks to eagerly watch the unfolding interaction.

"You only play low block against us!" the bitter City supporter shouted, pointing an accusatory finger directly at the manager.

Staring back blankly for a long moment, he finally slammed the trunk shut with a heavy, echoing thud. "Yeah, but I won."

Throwing his hands up in pure frustration, the rival fan sneered. "That is anti-football, mate. You just sit ten men behind the ball and pray for a lucky counter. It is a cowardly way to play the game."

Refusing to raise his voice or alter his relaxed posture, the coach kept his hands resting loosely by his sides. "I think you guys desperately need copium to process the humiliating defeat. It is not a good thing for your long-term health."

Overhearing the devastating comeback, a group of United fans lingering near the store entrance burst into loud, echoing laughter. Hearing the mockery, the City fan's face flushed bright red as he stepped forward aggressively to hurl a vicious string of loud expletives attacking both the man and his defensive tactics.

Fixing the irate supporter with completely half-closed eyes, the target of the abuse remained entirely unfazed.

"I will be sure to remember that exactly the next time United play City," he stated, keeping his tone chillingly flat. "And I will make absolutely sure your players know the exact reason why they lost."

The gathered home supporters laughed even louder this time, with one letting out a piercing whistle of approval. Because several onlookers were already holding up their glowing phones to record the entire humiliating exchange, the outnumbered City fan finally realized he was trapped on camera. Muttering one last pathetic curse under his breath, he spun around and scurried quickly toward his own car to escape the public embarrassment.

Ignoring the fleeing man, the victor simply opened the driver-side door, climbed behind the wheel, and drove peacefully away.

By the time the SUV pulled into the sprawling estate in Hale Barns, the viral video had already hit the internet. Spreading like wildfire across social media platforms within mere minutes, the shaky footage clearly showed the stoic manager standing completely unfazed with his bag of groceries while effortlessly shutting down the furious rival fan.

@UTD_Faithful: Bro went to buy tomatoes and ended up cooking a City fan instead. 😭

@CityTears: The way he says "yeah but I won" with a straight face is killing me.

@RedDevilCentral: Marcus Vale out here prescribing copium in a Waitrose parking lot.

@FootballBanter: Anti-football? Mate's team got smoked and he is crying at a supermarket.

@SanchoSzn: I have never loved a manager more than this man.

@StretfordEnd_: He literally warned the whole City squad because of one fan.

@Citeh_Blues: Pep Guardiola is in his office right now screaming at that fan for motivating Marcus.

@Tactical_Times: Imagine trying to banter Marcus Vale and he threatens your entire football club.

@CarSpotterUK: The fact that he drives a sleeper car makes this video ten times funnier.

@MancunianWay: City fans are genuinely terrified of the low block now.

@GenZ_United: Marcus is the only manager who uses internet slang in real life.

@PaddyPower: Did he just prescribe copium to a grown man?

@SkySportsNews_Parody: This is the greatest piece of media to ever come out of Manchester.

@UnitedStand: United fans laughing in the background is the best part of the video.

@RashfordProp: He was just trying to put his groceries in the car man, leave him alone.

@BlueMoonRising: The entire blue side of Manchester is going to pay for what that guy said.

@EPL_Talk: Marcus does not even raise his voice, he just destroys you calmly.

@Ronaldo_CR7_Fan: I need that "yeah but I won" soundbite as my ringtone right now.

@UCL_Watch: He looked at that fan like he was a minor tactical error.

@OasisFan99: That fan just signed City's death warrant for the next derby.

@StatmanDave: Haaland is going to be marked by three players next game because of this guy.

@Specsavers: "Copium is not a good thing for health" should be on a shirt.

@AnimeAndFooty: Why does Marcus look like he just woke up from a nap in every video?

@RoyKeane_Stans: The coldest manager in the Premier League without a doubt.

@TacticsBoard: City fans trying to talk tactics in a parking lot and failing miserably.

@GaryNeville_Fan: He is actually going to pin this video on the dressing room wall before the derby.

@ManchesterIsRed: Marcus Vale owns Manchester on and off the pitch.

@FPL_Manager: He did not even blink when the guy started cursing.

@LocalManc: That fan is never showing his face in that supermarket again.

@LowBlockMasterclass: Ten men behind the ball and three points in the bag.

Completely ignoring the exploding internet reactions, Marcus was already busy inside his modern kitchen. Shrugging off his heavy winter coat, he tied an apron around his waist and immediately started unpacking the fresh groceries. Placing the raw chicken breasts onto a wooden cutting board, he sliced the meat into perfectly even pieces before crushing the cloves of garlic expertly with the flat side of his heavy knife. Tossing the bright cherry tomatoes into a hot pan coated with olive oil, he let them sizzle as the rich, mouth-watering smell of cooking food rapidly filled the large, otherwise quiet house.

Moving around the kitchen with the exact same ruthless efficiency he demanded from his players on the pitch, he allowed absolutely no wasted movements. Checking the violently boiling water for the pasta before giving the simmering sauce a quick stir, his culinary rhythm was suddenly interrupted when the front doorbell rang sharply.

Wiping his hands cleanly on a hanging towel, he walked down the hallway and pulled the heavy door open to find Milly standing on the porch. Wearing a thick, oversized jumper paired with casual jeans, she clutched a small overnight bag and smiled brightly the exact second they made eye contact.

Stepping eagerly forward, he wrapped both arms securely around her narrow waist as she immediately looped hers around the back of his neck. Sharing a soft, lingering kiss right in the open doorway, the freezing outside air rushed wildly into the foyer, yet neither pulled away for a long, quiet moment.

"Smells like a mix of garlic and fancy cologne," the actress observed warmly, finally stepping inside to drop her bag carelessly by the wall.

"I am cooking," he noted plainly, locking the deadbolt securely behind her.

"Yeah, I can tell. Smells bloody amazing in here."

Gesturing toward the grand staircase, he issued a simple instruction. "Go upstairs and freshen up. The food will be completely ready by the time you come back down."

Nodding in agreement, she kicked off her shoes and padded quietly up the carpeted stairs.

Retreating back into the kitchen, the host swiftly drained the boiling pasta, folded it perfectly into the rich tomato and chicken sauce, and expertly plated the steaming food into two large ceramic bowls. After pouring two generous glasses of the expensive red wine he had purchased earlier, he set the polished dining table meticulously.

Reappearing a few minutes later, the blonde had washed her face and tied her hair up into a casual, messy bun. Strolling into the dining area, she took a seat directly across from him just as a steaming bowl of pasta was placed gently in front of her.

Digging into the meal, she took her first bite and let out a soft, delighted hum of approval before pointing her silver fork directly at the chef.

"Oh my god, this is actually unreal," she praised.

"Thanks," came the standard, flat reply as he took a slow sip of his dark red wine.

"So," she began, resting her chin casually on her hand while studying his face. "Are you just making a habit of starting fights in random parking lots now, or what?"

Looking up from his meal without altering his expression a single fraction, he defended himself. "I did not start a fight. I was merely stating objective facts about a football match."

A bright laugh escaped her lips. "I saw the video, mate. It's literally everywhere. You told a grown man he needed copium 'cause his team lost. You know you're trending again, right?"

"I just went out to buy tomatoes," he deadpanned.

"You threatened an entire football club over some bloody tomatoes," she countered, a massive smile spreading across her face.

"He threatened my tactics," he justified logically. "I had to defend the low block because it is a perfectly valid way to win a football match."

Taking another eager bite of her pasta, she shook her head in sheer disbelief. "You're impossible. Only you could make a grocery run look like a hostile press conference. The way you just stared him down... you looked like a literal mob boss ordering a hit."

Chewing his food methodically, he offered a slight shrug. "It is not my fault random people want to aggressively argue about football in a supermarket parking lot."

Laughing again—a bright, warm sound that echoed pleasantly through the large dining room—the couple continued eating, slipping effortlessly into an easy, natural banter.

"You know," she mused thoughtfully, leaning back comfortably in her chair. "I was just thinking about how you actually talk to people. You literally never use filler words. You just say exactly what you mean, and it's super jarring for normal people."

"Normal people waste a lot of time saying absolutely nothing," the tactician observed flatly.

"Like right now. Most guys would, you know, ask how my day was, or tell me I look nice. You just tell me to go upstairs and then hand me a bowl of pasta."

"Do you want me to ask how your day was?" he offered plainly.

"Nah," the actress replied, taking a long sip of her wine. "I actually hate small talk. I'm just observing you. You operate like an absolute machine."

Frowning slightly, he rejected the comparison. "I am not a machine. I simply prioritize maximum efficiency."

Pointing her fork triumphantly across the table, she countered, "Which is exactly what a machine would say."

Reaching casually across the table, he hijacked her wine glass, taking a deliberate sip just to annoy her before setting it precisely back down. Receiving a playful, fiery glare in response, the manager fired back.

"If I am a machine, you are a menace."

"No, I'm not!" she protested instantly.

Flashing a rare, incredibly smug smile, he trapped her in her own logic. "That is exactly what a menace would say."

Shaking her head in defeat, the young star quickly realized she could never win a verbal argument against his flawless, aggravating logic.

Once the delicious food was gone, Marcus stood up to gather the empty ceramic plates, carrying them efficiently over to the sink. Following him closely, his guest leaned back against the cool marble counter to watch him load the stainless-steel dishwasher.

"Are we still watching the new episode tonight?" she asked hopefully.

Pushing the machine shut and wiping down the countertops with a damp cloth, he nodded. "Yes."

"Sweet. 'Cause my character does something so bloody cool in this one, and I need to see your reaction."

Strolling out of the kitchen together, the pair entered the large, softly lit living room. Dominated by a massive, wall-mounted television screen and a deep, sprawling couch, the minimalist space felt incredibly cozy. Grabbing a thick blanket from the back of the sofa, the host tossed it loosely over the plush cushions. Snuggling down into the corner, Milly pulled her legs up to get completely comfortable before her partner took a seat right next to her, deliberately leaving absolutely zero space between them.

Picking up the black remote, he started the highly anticipated episode of House of the Dragon.

Glowing brightly in the darkened room, the massive screen cast shifting, colorful lights across their relaxed faces while the epic fantasy score swelled dramatically from the hidden surround sound speakers. Watching the broadcast intently, the actress occasionally leaned over to offer whispered, behind-the-scenes trivia regarding the heavy costumes or how many grueling hours it took to film a specific sequence.

For the first twenty minutes, the United boss actually watched the screen, diligently following the complex plot and the subtle political maneuvering of the royal characters. However, as the long episode steadily progressed, his sharp attention began to drift elsewhere.

The spacious room felt wonderfully warm. With his date leaning her comfortable weight against his shoulder, he could easily smell the light, floral scent of her expensive shampoo. Slowly turning his head to study her profile, he watched her stare at the roaring dragons on the screen, completely captivated by the cinematic spectacle. Reaching out silently, he placed a warm, heavy hand gently against the curve of her waist. Refusing to look away from the television, she merely hummed and leaned even closer into his comforting touch.

Sliding his palm smoothly upward, his long fingers traced the soft, thick fabric of her oversized jumper before coming to rest securely against her side. As his thumb began tracing small, incredibly slow circles against her ribs, a quiet, appreciative hum vibrated deep in her throat, clearly enjoying the intoxicating warmth. While the television continued blaring the harsh sounds of clashing steel and dramatic dialogue, the tactician was no longer listening to a single word of it.

Wandering slightly further, the roaming hand slowly slipped beneath the thick hem of the sweater. The exact second his warm palm made direct, electrifying contact with the incredibly smooth skin of her bare stomach, he felt her breathing hitch noticeably.

Shifting her body to turn slightly toward him, another soft, breathy sound escaped her lips as his calloused fingers deliberately traced the dip of her waist. Finally tearing her gaze away from the bright screen, she looked up into his face, her pupils blown dark and heavy in the dim, flickering light of the living room.

Bringing his free hand upward, the manager gently brushed a stray, blonde lock of hair away from her eyes. Allowing his fingers to linger intimately against her warm cheek, he traced the sharp line of her jaw with agonizing slowness. Leaning her face heavily into his palm, she fluttered her eyes shut for a brief, trusting second before opening them again to stare directly at his mouth.

Leaning in with quiet purpose, he closed the remaining inches between them, tilted his head slightly, and pressed his lips firmly against hers in a remarkably slow, breath-stealing kiss.
