Manchester United Revival

Chapter 113: UEFA Awards

The heat of Istanbul hit the windows of the black transport van. Outside the Haliç Congress Center, crowds of eager fans stood behind metal barriers while camera crews occupied the red carpet, waiting for the managers and players to arrive for the UEFA group stage draw and awards ceremony. It was the official start of the European football calendar.

Sitting in the back of the vehicle, Marcus stared quietly at his phone. He wore a dark, perfectly tailored suit his sister, Elena, had ordered specifically so he would represent the club properly. Though he put the expensive garment on, the manager certainly didn't wear it the way she intended. Leaving the tie back in his hotel room, he unbuttoned the top of his crisp shirt and allowed the suit jacket to hang loosely over his broad shoulders.

Across from him sat Alexander Vance, the CEO of Axiom Global Partners, who checked his expensive watch before nervously straightening his own tie.

"The broadcast goes live in twenty minutes," the executive warned. "You won the Champions League. You absolutely have to walk the carpet because the media wants to see you."

"They will ask the exact same three questions they always ask," the coach replied, his fingers tapping a steady, rhythmic beat against his knee. "They want to know about Marcus Rashford leaving for Chelsea and his current good form in the league. They want to know if a thirty-seven-year-old striker can successfully continue to play in our system, and how all our new signings are integrating. I have already answered these tedious questions on the pitch."

"You do not have to give them long answers," Vance countered as the heavy van finally slowed down approaching the designated drop-off zone. "Just give them a quick quote. It significantly helps the club's image."

"I am the manager. My sole job is to win football matches," came the flat refusal.

When a UEFA official in a sharp blue blazer pulled the door open, the deafening noise of the surging crowd flooded the cabin immediately alongside rapidly flashing camera bulbs.

Stepping out onto the plush red carpet, the United boss shoved both hands deep into his pockets. Hunching his shoulders to walk briskly forward, he refused to even glance toward the waiting cameras.

"Marcus! A quick word for Sky Sports!" a desperate reporter shouted over the metal barrier. "Any thoughts on Rashford's great start at Chelsea?"

Ignoring the bait entirely, he kept his pace steady.

"Marcus! Over here! Are you confident about defending the title?" another journalist pleaded.

Offering a brief, dismissive wave of his hand to acknowledge the chaotic noise, he didn't bother slowing down. Walking straight past the frantic interview zones and completely ignoring the designated spots for staged photographs, the manager quickly reached the glass doors of the congress center and vanished inside, leaving several media coordinators looking thoroughly confused.

Inside, the expansive lobby was blissfully quiet and heavily air-conditioned, featuring elegant waiters carrying silver trays of expensive drinks. High-profile managers, wealthy club executives, and famous former players stood clustered in small, elite groups, talking and laughing. Spotting Jurgen Klopp chatting amiably with Carlo Ancelotti, and Pep Guardiola addressing a tight circle of Spanish delegates, Marcus felt zero desire to engage in the political small talk.

Skirting around the main gathering entirely, he discovered a wonderfully quiet space hidden behind a massive sponsor backdrop. Claiming a flimsy folding chair originally meant for security staff, he pulled out his phone and opened his messages app.

Marcus: I am hiding behind a UEFA banner. People out there are talking about synergy and brand growth. Absolutely none of them are talking about football.

Settling back, he waited for a reply. The actress was currently stuck down in London, and the pair had successfully managed three more dates since the blowout Liverpool match.

A moment later, the device buzzed in his palm.

Milly: You're literally at one of the most glamorous football events of the year. Please tell me you actually put the suit on.

Marcus: I am wearing it. However, I did not wear the tie.

Milly: My stylist would absolutely cry if she saw you right now. Did you at least smile for the cameras on the carpet?

Marcus: I ignored them and walked inside. They wanted to ask about players who do not play for me anymore. I prefer talking to you.

Milly: I'm stuck sitting in a random green room drinking awful coffee. I've done like twenty interviews today and people keep asking me about wearing those bloody blonde wigs. I would trade places with you in a heartbeat.

Marcus: When do you finish?

Milly: I'll be back up in Manchester on Tuesday. You gonna take me to that hidden Italian place again?

Marcus: Yes.

Milly: The paps absolutely hate that grey Mercedes. I bloody love it. Good luck tonight. Try not to embarrass yourself too much.

Locking the screen, his gaze lifted to find Cristiano Ronaldo walking directly toward his hiding spot. The Portuguese superstar wore a flawless tuxedo with perfectly styled hair, while Georgina strolled elegantly beside him, offering a polite nod of greeting.

"You are sitting in the dark corner, boss," the forward observed with a brilliant smile.

"The lobby is full of people who only want to talk about commercial revenue," the manager muttered, finally standing up from the flimsy chair. "I prefer to save my focus for the actual season."

"They are finally opening the doors to the auditorium," the striker informed him. "Let us go find our seats."

The massive main hall featured endless rows of plush red velvet seats facing a brightly lit stage. The iconic Champions League trophy sat proudly on a podium to the left, while the Europa League and Conference League hardware occupied the right flank. Situated right in the middle were the clear glass bowls holding the all-important draw balls.

Navigating toward the very front row, the coach found the exclusive section strictly reserved for award nominees and major club representatives. Claiming his assigned spot, he was flanked by Ronaldo on his right and Bruno Fernandes on his left, while Vance and Darren Fletcher settled into the row directly behind them.

As the house lights dimmed, the lavish ceremony commenced.

Massive digital screens suspended above the stage played an emotional video package summarizing the previous season. Opening footage documented Manchester United's painful struggles under Solskjær, angry fan protests, and the eventual Axiom takeover before transitioning dramatically to show the new manager standing calmly on the touchline. The highlight reel showcased the FA Cup final victory alongside the grueling Champions League final against Liverpool. It specifically emphasized the brilliant tactical shift made at halftime—changing seamlessly from a rigid low block into a fluid, interchanging attack that tore the Merseyside club apart—before concluding with the squad joyously lifting the European cup.

Two sharply dressed hosts soon walked out to welcome the elite audience and speak endlessly about the rich history of the tournament. Because the opening speeches were incredibly long and rigidly scripted, the United boss felt his eyelids growing dangerously heavy. The auditorium was pleasantly dark, the velvet seats were incredibly comfortable, and the monotonous voices of the presenters blended into a soothing, steady drone. Surrendering to the environment, he leaned his head back.

"First, we begin with a very special presentation," the male host announced. "The 2022 UEFA President's Award. This year, we honor a man who fundamentally changed the way football is played. Arrigo Sacchi."

Opening his eyes at the legendary name, Marcus watched the seventy-six-year-old Italian tactical genius walk slowly onto the stage while the overhead screens played grainy footage of his dominant AC Milan squad from the late 1980s.

The young coach possessed immense respect for the veteran. Before Sacchi revolutionized the sport, traditional Italian teams defended deep with a passive sweeper. Introducing a high defensive line alongside strict zonal marking, the innovator taught his men to press the ball collectively and aggressively utilize the offside trap to compress playable space. Sacchi inherently understood that an elite squad had to move as one synchronized unit. Watching the vintage clips of Milan's legendary defenders stepping up perfectly in unison to catch frustrated attackers offside, the United boss recognized the absolute foundation of truly brilliant football.

Accepting his prestigious award, the Italian gave a passionate speech regarding hard work and the absolute necessity of playing proactive tactics. As the wealthy audience stood up to offer a resounding ovation, Marcus clapped respectfully.

Once the legend departed the spotlight, UEFA Deputy General Secretary Giorgio Marchetti approached the podium to explain the complex rules of the impending draw. Teams originating from the same country could not face each other during the group stage, while convoluted television broadcast regulations dictated certain heavyweights had to play on entirely different days.

Former players Yaya Touré and Hamit Altıntop eventually joined the official to physically draw the plastic balls.

Closing his eyes once more, the manager tuned out the noise, already finding the tedious draw mechanics entirely straightforward.

"We begin with Pot 1," Marchetti's voice echoed through the hall.

Having conquered the Champions League, Manchester United secured a coveted spot in Pot 1 alongside the domestic champions of Europe's top-ranked countries: Manchester City, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Porto, and Ajax. Furthermore, Eintracht Frankfurt earned their placement by winning the Europa League, while Barcelona claimed the Spanish slot, consequently forcing a runner-up Real Madrid down into Pot 2.

Shuffling the plastic spheres inside the clear glass bowl, Touré retrieved one and twisted it open.

"Manchester United," the Ivorian read aloud.

"Manchester United goes directly into Group A," the host confirmed as the giant digital screen updated to display the famous red crest at the very top of the first column. The remaining top-seed balls were then methodically drawn and sorted into their respective groups.

"Before we continue to the remaining pots, we will proudly present the first of our positional awards," the female presenter interjected smoothly.

Pausing the tedious draw, the organization announced the Goalkeeper of the Season. David De Gea rightfully won the hardware for his miraculous saves that directly secured the UCL title, which was quickly followed by the Defender of the Season presentation.

Marcus leaned back into the plush velvet seat and closed his eyes. To anyone nearby, he simply looked as though he was listening without much interest. His breathing remained slow and even, his expression unchanged.

Ronaldo had seen him sit through tactical meetings with his eyes closed before, silently thinking through problems, so neither he nor Bruno paid him any attention. The speeches continued, the draw moved from one pot to another, and Marcus remained perfectly still.

"We now move to Pot 2," Marchetti announced sometime later.

This secondary tier held incredibly strong opponents, including Real Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea, RB Leipzig, Atletico de Madrid, Sevilla, and Tottenham Hotspur. However, the English giants were strictly protected from drawing Liverpool, Chelsea, or Spurs due to the domestic clash rule.

Plucking a fresh ball from the bowl, Altıntop handed the unfurled paper slip over for confirmation.

"RB Leipzig," Touré announced.

Calculating the available legal groups instantly, the digital system updated the massive screen to drop the German side directly into Group A alongside the Red Devils.

Leaning forward from the row behind, Alexander Vance glanced toward Marcus.

"Leipzig," he whispered quietly. "Sesko's loan club."

Marcus gave no visible reaction. Vance assumed the manager had heard him and was already thinking about the tactical matchup, so he settled back into his seat.

"We now move to Pot 3," Marchetti instructed next.

This dangerous pot featured the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Red Bull Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, Napoli, Sporting CP, Bayer Leverkusen, and Benfica.

Mixing the spheres once more, the Turkish ambassador selected a slip.

"Sporting CP," Touré read into the microphone.

Due to complicated broadcast pairings avoiding conflicts with Porto and Benfica, the computer automatically slotted the Portuguese side into Group A.

Leaning forward eagerly, Bruno Fernandes smiled.

"Sporting! Both of our former clubs in the same group."

Seeing no response Bruno shrugged. Marcus often sat with his eyes closed before matches, mentally preparing.

"And now," the male presenter boomed, "we come to a major highlight of the evening. The UEFA Coach of the Year awards."

Splitting the giant screens, the broadcast displayed the incredibly talented nominees for the women's category.

"The winner is... Sarina Wiegman!"

Polite applause filled the room as the Dutch tactician walked up to the brightly lit stage, having recently led England to a historic victory in Euro 2022. Delivering a highly professional speech, she graciously thanked her players, dedicated backroom staff, and the football association for providing the necessary resources to succeed before retreating to warm cheers.

"We now proudly present the Men's Coach of the Year," the female host announced. "The prestigious nominees are Carlo Ancelotti, Jurgen Klopp, and Marcus Vale."

The highlight reel played across the giant screens, showcasing Manchester United's remarkable season.

"For securing an unprecedented undefeated season and a European double... the winner is Marcus Vale!"

The auditorium erupted into applause.

Ronaldo rose to his feet immediately. Bruno stood beside him, applauding enthusiastically. Around them, everyone in the Manchester United delegation was already standing.

Marcus remained seated.

Ronaldo glanced sideways.

"...Boss?"

There was no response.

Bruno leaned over.

"Marcus."

Still nothing.

The television director switched to the live camera feed of the winner.

Marcus sat exactly as before, head resting lightly against the back of the chair, eyes peacefully closed, completely unaware that thousands inside the auditorium—and millions watching around the world—were waiting for him.

Bruno blinked.

"He's actually asleep."

Ronaldo stared for a second before an amused smile spread across his face.

"I thought he was just ignoring everyone."

The applause gradually turned into laughter as the realization spread through the audience.

Only then did Bruno grab Marcus by the shoulder.

"Boss! Wake up! You won."

Opening his eyes groggily, Marcus blinked against the harsh lighting. Glancing up at the giant digital monitor to see his own exhausted face broadcast to the world, he quickly realized the entire auditorium was actively staring at him. Refusing to panic, he merely let out a small, tired sigh, rubbed his eyes, and stood up.

Bothering neither to fix his askew jacket nor button his collar, he shoved his hands deep into his pockets and ambled up the stairs toward the stage, maintaining his trademark slow, lazy slouch.

Standing nervously in the center of the bright stage, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin held the heavy silver trophy with an unsure, awkward smile.

"Congratulations, Marcus," the executive offered politely, handing over the prestigious hardware.

Accepting the award with a single hand, the winner trudged slowly over to the microphone stand. The massive auditorium fell entirely silent, eagerly waiting for the tactical genius to explain himself, detail his revolutionary philosophies, or at least deliver a poignant speech about his incredible seasonal journey.

Staring blankly out at the sea of wealthy executives and rival managers, he leaned casually into the microphone and let out a massive, unhidden yawn.

"Thanks," he mumbled.

Pivoting on his heel, he walked right back down the stairs and headed straight for his seat.

Absolute silence held the room hostage for three agonizing seconds. The stunned hosts stared blankly at the empty podium while Čeferin blinked in disbelief. Then, slowly, scattered pockets of confused applause broke out across the hall.

Down in the front row, Ronaldo sat in his chair laughing out loud at the sheer audacity, while a deeply embarrassed Bruno buried his face in his hands.

Dropping back into his velvet seat, the victor carelessly deposited the heavy silver trophy directly onto the floor next to his dress shoes.

"You honestly did not want to say anything else?" the Portuguese midfielder whispered in disbelief.

"Nah, I will just be receiving the award again next year anyway," came the flat, arrogant justification.

Recovering their professional composure quickly, the hosts artificially raised their voices to inject much-needed energy back into the derailed ceremony.

"We now move to the final pot," the presenter announced smoothly. "Pot 4."

This dangerous final tier contained tricky away ties like Club Brugge, Celtic, Maccabi Haifa, Viktoria Plzeň, Marseille, Rangers, Dinamo Zagreb, and Copenhagen.

Reaching into the glass bowl one last time, Altıntop extracted a final opponent.

"Celtic," Touré read out loudly.

The computer algorithm instantly slotted the Scottish champions into Group A, officially completing the draw for the Red Devils as the massive screen displayed the final table.

Group A:

Manchester United

RB Leipzig

Sporting CP

Celtic

Staring at the glowing digital board, the manager evaluated the impending fixtures purely on cold, footballing terms. RB Leipzig played with frantic high energy, relying heavily on aggressive counter-pressing and a claustrophobic narrow formation. However, his squad could easily bypass that trap using Bruno Guimarães while exploiting the wide spaces left behind their attacking fullbacks utilizing Kvara and Sancho. Because Sporting stubbornly played out from the back, a high press against their center-backs would undoubtedly force critical turnovers. Finally, Celtic promised a brutal, physical battle; playing at Parkhead was notoriously difficult due to the hostile crowd noise and raw intensity. It would serve as a perfect proving ground for young James Garner, who desperately needed to experience heavy, punishing tackling in the senior midfield.

"We proudly conclude our ceremony," the host announced grandly, "with the Men's and Women's Player of the Year awards."

After Alexia Putellas claimed the female honor for her stellar performances with Barcelona and delivered a graceful acceptance speech in Spanish, the climax arrived.

"And now, the Men's Player of the Year. The elite nominees are Mohamed Salah, Kevin De Bruyne, and Cristiano Ronaldo."

An explosive highlight reel flashed overhead, showcasing the Portuguese legend's ruthless goals against Liverpool alongside his predatory movement inside the box, heavily emphasizing his staggering seventeen Champions League goals.

"The winner is... Cristiano Ronaldo!"

The room erupted in genuine, roaring cheers.

Standing up tall, the veteran striker buttoned his tailored jacket, kissed Georgina tenderly, and marched proudly up to the stage. Accepting the heavy trophy from a relieved Čeferin, he flashed his million-dollar smile for the flashing cameras before stepping up to the microphone.

"I want to thank my beautiful family, my loyal fans, and my incredible teammates," he began, his voice ringing clear and powerfully confident. "We had a very hard time last year, but we finally found our way."

Gazing down into the front row, his eyes locked directly onto his slumbering boss.

"Most importantly, I want to thank my manager," the forward continued with fierce sincerity. "The media said I was far too old to play in this modern game, insisting I could not run enough to survive. However, Marcus refused to listen to them. He built a revolutionary system that lets me do exactly what I do best, proving that if you truly understand space, physical age does not matter. He is an absolutely brilliant manager... even if he clearly likes to sleep during the prestigious awards."

Warm laughter echoed through the crowded hall. Still slouched deep in his chair, the coach offered a rare, genuine smile alongside a small nod of respectful acknowledgment.

"Thank you," the legend finished, hoisting the silver trophy high into the air.

As the house lights finally came up to signal the end of the broadcast, upbeat music blared over the speakers while the elite attendees stood up to mingle and migrate toward the exclusive VIP after-party.

Rising to his feet, Marcus immediately turned for the exit, deliberately leaving his brand-new trophy abandoned on the floor.

Snatching it up quickly, Bruno jogged after him. "Boss, you forgot this!"

"Just put it in the club museum when we get back to Carrington," the manager ordered without looking back. "I literally have zero use for it at my house."

Walking briskly away from the glamorous VIP lounges, he headed straight for the quiet exit doors, pulling his phone from his pocket.

Marcus: The ceremony is over.

The device vibrated instantly in his palm.

Milly: Mate, my entire timeline is flooded with clips of you literally sleeping on live TV. And then you just went up there and said one single word? You're actually ridiculous lmao.

Stepping out of the stifling building, the warm Turkish night air felt significantly better than the recycled air conditioning. Spotting Vance's black transport van idling near the curb, he typed a quick reply.

Marcus: I said exactly what was required. Nothing more.

Milly: Whatever you say, boss. Have a safe flight back. See ya on Tuesday!

Sliding the phone securely back into his pocket, he pulled the heavy car door open and climbed inside. As the driver fired up the engine, the chaotic trip to Turkey officially concluded. With the grueling European campaign firmly set, the manager simply closed his eyes once more as the van pulled away from the curb, eager to finally head home.

HE ACTUALLY SLEPT! My manager! He genuinely does not care about the UEFA PR circus. He's there to win football matches, not lick boots in Istanbul. Get him back to Carrington immediately!

@LFCLiam_

So disrespectful. The guy wins a European award and can't even bother to put on a tie or give a proper speech. Arrogance. Klopp would never.

@City_Core

KDB robbed. Highest chance creation in Europe and he loses out to Ronaldo because United camps their entire team in the box so he can tap it in. PR d'Or.
