Manchester United Revival

Chapter 104: UEFA Super Cup

The Helsinki Olympic Stadium shone brightly under the dark Finnish sky. Tens of thousands of fans filled the historic arena. Half the stadium wore the white colors of Eintracht Frankfurt. The other half wore the red of Manchester United. The silver UEFA Super Cup trophy rested on a blue pedestal near the halfway line.

High up in the broadcasting gantry, Peter Drury adjusted his headset. He looked down at the pristine green pitch. Next to him, Ally McCoist reviewed his match notes.

"Good evening from the magnificent city of Helsinki," Peter Drury said into his microphone. His voice carried the familiar, dramatic weight known to football fans across the world. "A cool, crisp night in Finland provides the perfect canvas for continental royalty. Tonight, the winners of the UEFA Europa League face the winners of the UEFA Champions League. Eintracht Frankfurt against Manchester United. Tradition against the new wave. German discipline against Marcus Vale's relentless red storm. But beneath the silver stakes of the Super Cup lies a towering milestone. Vale's men stand on the precipice of footballing immortality, unbeaten in 42 consecutive matches. Avoid defeat tonight, and they equal the legendary 43-game unbeaten record of Juventus of 2011-12 season."

Ally McCoist leaned closer to his microphone. "It is a fascinating clash of styles, Peter, and the pressure of that record adds a layer to this match. Oliver Glasner has built a Frankfurt team that loves to suffer together. They sit deep, they form a solid back five, and they spring forward on the counter. But tonight, they face a Manchester United side that refuses to play slow football. Marcus Vale abandoned possession against Brighton. He wants vertical passes. He wants speed. Frankfurt will have to run themselves into the ground to survive."

"Let us look at the starting elevens," Drury continued. "First, the nominal home side tonight, Eintracht Frankfurt. Kevin Trapp starts in goal—a back three of Almamy Touré, Tuta, and Evan Ndicka. Ansgar Knauff operates as the right wing-back, with Christopher Lenz on the left. The midfield pivot features Djibril Sow and the captain, Sebastian Rode. Daichi Kamada and Jesper Lindstrøm play just behind the lone striker, Rafael Borré."

"It is a hard-working lineup, Peter," McCoist added. "Rode and Sow will have to cover massive ground in the center of the pitch. They cannot allow the United midfield time to look up."

"And for Manchester United," Drury read from his sheet. "David De Gea takes his place between the posts. The defense consists of Kieran Trippier, Raphael Varane, the captain Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw. Denis Zakaria anchors the midfield. Ahead of him, Bruno Fernandes pairs with Donny van de Beek. Jadon Sancho starts on the Left flank. Khvicha starts on the right. Paulo Dybala leads the line as the central striker."

"Van de Beek is the interesting choice there," McCoist observed. "He plays quick, one-touch football. Vale wants him to connect the defense to the attack in a single second. It is a very aggressive lineup."

Down on the touchline, Marcus Vale walked to the edge of his technical area. He kept his hands in his pockets.

The referee blew the whistle. Eintracht Frankfurt kicked off.

Rafael Borré passed the ball backward to Sow. Sow passed it to Tuta. Tuta took a touch.

United did not retreat. Dybala immediately jogged toward Tuta. Kvaratskhelia ran toward Ndicka. Sancho moved toward Touré.

Tuta felt the immediate pressure. He passed the ball wide to Knauff on the right touchline. Luke Shaw stepped forward instantly. Shaw tackled Knauff before the wing-back could control the ball. The ball rolled out of play for a United throw-in.

"Ten seconds in and Manchester United already squeeze the life out of the Frankfurt build-up," Drury noted.

Shaw picked up the ball. He threw it to Fernandes. Fernandes controlled it with his chest. He passed it to Zakaria. Zakaria turned and looked up the pitch.

Marcus watched Almamy Touré. Touré stood on the right side of the Frankfurt defense. Touré planted his left foot flat on the grass. He did not stand on his toes. He looked static.

Marcus caught Van de Beek's eye. Marcus tapped his own left heel, then pointed subtly into the space behind Touré.

Van de Beek understood.

Zakaria passed the ball to Van de Beek. Van de Beek did not take a touch. He hit a first-time, lofted pass over the Frankfurt defense.

Sancho recognized the trigger. He sprinted. Touré tried to turn, but his flat-footed stance betrayed him. He took a full second to pivot his hips. By the time Touré turned, Sancho was three yards past him.

Sancho brought the ball down inside the penalty area. Kevin Trapp rushed off his goal line. Sancho cut the ball hard across the face of the goal. Dybala slid across the grass, but Ndicka desperately kicked the ball over the crossbar for a corner.

"What an early warning for Eintracht Frankfurt!" Drury shouted. "Sancho springs the trap in the very first minute! Only a frantic clearance from Ndicka saves them."

"That is exactly what we talked about, Peter," McCoist said. "One pass. One single pass from Van de Beek entirely bypasses the Frankfurt midfield and defense. The speed of thought from United is terrifying."

Trippier jogged to the corner flag. He swung the ball into the six-yard box. Trapp leaped and punched the ball clear. It fell to Kamada on the edge of the area.

Kamada tried to launch a counter-attack. He pushed the ball past Fernandes.

Zakaria arrived. He did not tackle. He simply stepped his large frame across Kamada's path, shielding the ball. Kamada bounced off him. Zakaria turned and passed the ball back to Varane.

Varane passed to Maguire. Maguire played a firm ball to Shaw. Shaw drove forward. He faced Knauff again. Shaw played a quick one-two pass with Kvaratskhelia. The return pass bypassed Knauff completely. Shaw entered the final third and crossed the ball low. Tuta intercepted it and cleared it toward the halfway line.

"United are swarming," Drury said. "Frankfurt cannot get a foot on the ball. The red shirts are everywhere."

In the eighth minute, the pressure mounted.

De Gea caught a long, hopeful cross from Lenz. De Gea did not fall to the ground. He ran to the edge of his penalty area and threw the ball out to Trippier on the right flank.

Trippier controlled the ball on his chest. He drove forward ten yards. He passed the ball inside to Van de Beek. Van de Beek found himself in a pocket of space near the center circle.

Marcus watched Tuta. Tuta liked physical contact. Tuta wanted to wrestle the striker.

Dybala dropped deep. He moved completely away from the Frankfurt penalty area, dropping toward the center circle. Tuta, desperate to stay tight to his man, followed Dybala out of the defensive line. Tuta stepped five yards out of position.

A massive gap opened in the center of the Frankfurt defense.

Van de Beek did not look at Dybala. He hit a first-time, perfectly weighted pass straight through the gap Tuta left behind.

Kvaratskhelia made the diagonal run from the right wing. He abandoned the touchline. He sprinted directly into the empty space.

"Kvaratskhelia makes the run!" Drury's voice rose in pitch. "Van de Beek finds him! The gap is wide open!"

Kvaratskhelia collected the ball in stride. He entered the penalty area. He faced Kevin Trapp one-on-one.

Trapp came off his line, spreading his arms and legs. Kvaratskhelia did not panic. He dropped his right shoulder heavily. Trapp committed his weight to his left. Kvaratskhelia simply opened his right foot and rolled the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

The net rippled.

Goal. One-nil to Manchester United.

The United end of the stadium exploded with noise. Red flares lit up the stands. Kvaratskhelia ran toward the corner flag and slid on his knees. Van de Beek ran over and hugged him. Dybala pointed at Van de Beek, acknowledging the perfect pass.

"A clinical, cold-blooded finish from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia!" Drury shouted over the crowd. "But look at the play before that goal! Paulo Dybala creates the space, Donny van de Beek exploits it, and Kvaratskhelia provides the finishing touch. Ten minutes in, and United strike first in Helsinki!"

"It is beautiful to watch, Peter," McCoist added. "Tuta gets completely dragged out of position. He follows Dybala like a shadow, and he leaves the front door wide open. Kvaratskhelia's run is perfectly timed. Trapp had no chance. Marcus Vale's team strikes with lethal efficiency."

Marcus Vale did not celebrate. He watched the Frankfurt players. He watched their body language. He saw Sow yelling at Tuta. He saw Kamada shaking his head. Marcus knew they would try to force an immediate response.

Frankfurt restarted the match. They played with increased aggression. They pushed their wing-backs, Knauff and Lenz, higher up the pitch. They wanted to pin United in their own half.

In the twelfth minute, Knauff received the ball on the right wing. He tried to take on Luke Shaw. Shaw stood his ground. Knauff attempted a quick step-over. Shaw watched the ball, stepped forward, and tackled him cleanly. The ball rolled out for a throw-in.

Frankfurt threw the ball into the penalty area. Maguire rose high above Borré. Maguire headed the ball firmly out of the box.

The clearance fell to Sebastian Rode. Rode took a touch and fired a shot from twenty-five yards out. The ball flew high over the crossbar. De Gea watched it safely into the stands. De Gea asked for a new ball.

United refused to let Frankfurt build momentum. Whenever Frankfurt had the ball, Zakaria, Fernandes, and Van de Beek pressed them relentlessly in the midfield.

In the eighteenth minute, United launched another attack.

Varane intercepted a pass intended for Lindstrøm. He stepped into the midfield and played a vertical pass to Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes turned instantly. He saw Kvaratskhelia making a run on the right, but Lenz tracked him tightly.

Fernandes looked left. Sancho isolated Touré again. Fernandes hit a driven, thirty-yard cross-field pass.

Sancho killed the ball with his instep. He faced Touré. He did not sprint behind him this time. He dribbled directly at him. Sancho performed a rapid double step-over. Touré hesitated, his weight shifting nervously. Sancho pushed the ball to his right foot and curled a shot toward the far post.

Kevin Trapp dove at full stretch. He barely got his fingertips to the ball, pushing it onto the post. The ball bounced away, and Ndicka cleared it frantically into the stands.

"Off the woodwork!" Drury shouted. "Sancho almost makes it two! Frankfurt are hanging on by a thread. They cannot handle him one-on-one. Almamy Touré is living a nightmare on that left side."

"He has no help, Peter," McCoist observed. "Rode is trying to get across to cover, but the ball moves too quickly. Sancho is twisting his blood."

Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner stood on the touchline. He shouted instructions. He waved his arms. He ordered Rode to drop deeper permanently and help Touré double-team the English winger.

Marcus saw the adjustment. He turned to his assistant, Mike Phelan. "They are doubling Sancho," Marcus said quietly. "Tell Luke Shaw to overlap aggressively every single time. Make Rode choose between tracking Sancho or tracking Shaw."

Phelan relayed the instruction to the pitch.

In the twenty-fifth minute, the adjustment paid off.

Fernandes passed the ball to Sancho on the left wing. Touré and Rode immediately closed him down, forming a two-man wall.

Sancho held the ball under his foot. He waited.

Luke Shaw sprinted past them on the outside, overlapping at full speed down the touchline. Rode hesitated. He looked at Shaw running past him, then looked back at Sancho with the ball.

That split-second of hesitation was enough. Sancho slipped a perfect pass down the line, right into Shaw's path.

Shaw reached the ball near the corner flag. He whipped a low, hard cross into the six-yard box.

Dybala darted toward the near post. He flicked the ball with his heel. The ball beat Trapp completely, but it rolled agonizingly wide of the far post.

"Inches away!" Drury cried. "A brilliant overlap from Luke Shaw, a clever flick from Dybala, and it just trickles past the post. Eintracht Frankfurt are gasping for air."

"That is exactly how you beat a double team," McCoist noted. "You use the overlapping full-back. Rode didn't know whether to stick or twist, and Sancho punished him. United are completely dominating the tactical battle."

The pressure from United was relentless. Frankfurt could not get out of their own half. Every clearance was met by Maguire or Varane. The United center-backs stood on the halfway line. They simply headed the ball back into the midfield to restart the attack immediately.

In the thirty-second minute, Frankfurt finally managed a counter-attack.

Sow won a hard tackle against Van de Beek in the center circle. Sow looked up. He saw Borré making a run between Varane and Maguire. Sow hit a long, looping pass over the top.

Borré chased the ball. Varane matched his sprint perfectly. Borré tried to shoulder Varane out of the way. Varane did not move. He was too strong. Varane shielded the ball with his body, letting it bounce into the penalty area. De Gea rushed out and gathered the ball safely.

"Brilliant defending from Raphael Varane," Drury said. "He matches the striker stride for stride and simply escorts the ball to his goalkeeper."

De Gea did not hold the ball to slow down the play. He immediately threw it out to Trippier on the right.

Trippier played the ball down the line to Kvaratskhelia. Kvaratskhelia cut inside, beating Lenz easily. Kvaratskhelia passed the ball backward to Zakaria.

Zakaria looked up. He played a simple, ten-yard pass to Bruno Fernandes in the center of the pitch.

Frankfurt had dropped entirely into their penalty area. They were terrified of the pace of Kvaratskhelia and Sancho being behind them. They formed a solid block of five defenders and four midfielders on the edge of their own box.

Fernandes received the ball thirty yards from the goal. No Frankfurt player stepped out to press him. They protected the space behind them. They formed a white wall.

Marcus watched from the touchline. He did not shout. He kept his hands in his pockets.

Fernandes took one touch forward. He looked at the goal. He saw Kevin Trapp standing slightly to the left of the center. The Frankfurt defenders stood perfectly still, waiting for Fernandes to play a pass wide.

Fernandes did not pass. He stepped into the ball and struck it with his right laces.

"Fernandes has time here," Drury commentated as the shot was struck. "He aims—oh, what a strike! What an unbelievable strike!"

The strike was pure. The ball flew through the Helsinki air with terrifying speed. It did not spin. It moved slightly side to side, dipping violently as it approached the goal.

Trapp reacted late. The movement of the ball deceived him. He threw himself to his right, extending his arm fully.

The ball crashed into the top right corner of the net, hitting the metal stanchion with a loud crack.

Goal. Two-nil to Manchester United.

Bruno Fernandes ran toward the corner flag. He slid on his knees, pointing his fingers to the sky. The entire team rushed over to celebrate. Maguire ran from his own penalty area to jump on the pile of red shirts.

"A thunderbolt from Bruno Fernandes!" Drury yelled, his voice echoing in the broadcast. "Thirty yards out, pure venom! Frankfurt invited the pressure; they gave him too much time to measure it, and he punished them most spectacularly! The Portuguese magician delivers!"

"You cannot give him that much space, Peter," McCoist said, shaking his head. "I know Frankfurt are scared of the pace out wide, but you cannot let Bruno Fernandes line up a shot from thirty yards without putting a tackle in. Trapp had absolutely no chance. The dip on that ball was wicked. It is a brilliant, brilliant goal."

Frankfurt looked completely demoralized. They stood around the center circle, waiting for the celebration to end.

The match restarted. Frankfurt tried to hold possession, but their passing lacked any conviction. They seemed afraid to make a mistake. United pressed them high, forcing them to play the ball backward to Trapp repeatedly.

In the forty-second minute, Kamada tried to dribble past Zakaria near the touchline. Zakaria simply stuck his long right foot out, stole the ball cleanly, and passed it to Dybala. Dybala turned and shot, but the ball was blocked by Ndicka's thigh.

The referee looked at his watch. He blew his whistle to signal the end of the first half.

"And that is halftime in Helsinki," Drury announced. "Manchester United are in absolute control. Goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and a stunner from Bruno Fernandes separate the sides. Frankfurt have a mountain to climb in the second half."

The players walked down the tunnel. The United players breathed heavily, but they looked energized. The Frankfurt players looked completely exhausted.

Inside the dressing room, the United players sat on the benches. They drank water. They wiped their faces with towels. The room was mostly silent, filled only with the sound of heavy breathing.

Marcus stood in the center of the room. He did not use the tactical board.

"They are broken," Marcus said plainly. "They do not want to defend the space behind them, so they gave Bruno thirty yards of space. In the second half, their manager will tell them to push higher. He will tell them to press Bruno and Donny."

Marcus looked directly at Kvaratskhelia and Sancho. "When they push higher, the space behind them returns. Stay wide. Stay right on the touchline. Stretch them. Make them cover every blade of grass on this pitch."

He walked over to Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo was fully dressed in his kit.

"Get warm," Marcus said.

Ronaldo nodded.

The teams returned to the pitch for the second half.

Frankfurt made a substitution at halftime. Oliver Glasner brought on Mario Götze for Sebastian Rode. He wanted more creativity in the midfield. He wanted a player who could hold the ball under pressure.

"The second half is underway," Drury said as Frankfurt kicked off. "Mario Götze enters the fray for Frankfurt. Glasner rolls the dice. He needs a spark."

Frankfurt immediately pushed their midfield line ten yards higher up the pitch. They tried to press Zakaria and Van de Beek aggressively.

In the forty-eighth minute, the new Frankfurt tactic almost worked. Götze pressed Van de Beek from behind, forcing a rushed pass. Sow intercepted it and immediately played a through ball toward Borré.

Maguire stepped forward to intercept. He misjudged the flight of the ball slightly. It bounced over his foot. Borré brought the ball down on his chest and turned toward goal. He stood at the edge of the penalty area.

Varane scrambled across to cover the space. Borré did not wait. He took a quick, snap shot with his right foot.

David De Gea dove low to his right. He extended his right hand and pushed the ball around the post for a corner kick. A crucial, vital save to maintain the two-goal lead.

"Brilliant save from David De Gea!" Drury exclaimed. "Frankfurt show some life in the second half! A warning sign for Manchester United. Borré almost catches them out."

"That is a massive save, Peter," McCoist agreed. "Maguire just gets caught under the ball, but De Gea bails him out. Frankfurt needed that to go in. It gives them a bit of belief."

Frankfurt took the corner. Kostic whipped the ball into the crowded box. Tuta jumped high and won the header. The ball flew straight into De Gea's hands. De Gea caught it securely.

De Gea immediately ran to the edge of his box. He punted the ball massively down the field.

Kvaratskhelia chased the long ball. He controlled it on the right wing with a deft touch. He faced Lenz. Kvaratskhelia did not try to beat him with pace this time. He held the ball up, putting his foot on it, waiting for support.

Trippier overlapped heavily. Kvaratskhelia passed the ball to Trippier. Trippier hit a first-time cross into the box.

Dybala met the cross with a flying volley. Trapp made a brilliant reactionary save, blocking the ball with his legs. The ball bounced out to Van de Beek on the edge of the box. Van de Beek shot first-time, but the ball flew high over the crossbar into the stands.

The game became a physical, grinding battle in the midfield. Zakaria and Sow tackled each other repeatedly. Götze tried to find space between the United midfield and defensive lines, but Fernandes dropped deep to mark him closely.

In the fifty-fifth minute, Knauff made a strong run down the right flank. He pushed the ball past Shaw and crossed it low into the six-yard box. Maguire slid across the wet grass and cleared the ball out for a throw-in on the opposite side.

Frankfurt were growing into the game. They held more possession. They created half-chances. They looked dangerous.

Marcus watched from the touchline. He saw the shift in momentum. He saw the Frankfurt defensive line creeping higher and higher up the pitch, trying to support their attacks and squeeze the play.

Marcus turned to the bench. He nodded at Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo stood up. He took off his training jacket. He pulled his shin pads into place. He walked over to the touchline, adjusting his shirt.

"Here comes the ultimate weapon," Drury noted. "Cristiano Ronaldo is preparing to enter the match. Marcus Vale is looking to kill this game off completely."

In the sixty-second minute, the ball went out of play for a United throw-in. The fourth official raised the electronic board. The red number ten appeared in glowing lights.

Paulo Dybala jogged off the pitch. He clapped for the traveling fans. He high-fived Marcus Vale. He executed the false nine role perfectly, creating the vital space for the first two goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo jogged onto the pitch. The stadium erupted with a massive roar.

Ronaldo ran straight to the center of the Frankfurt defense. He did not drop deep like Dybala. He stood directly between Ndicka and Tuta. He stood right on the shoulder of the last defender.

The impact was instantaneous. Ndicka and Tuta looked at Ronaldo. They looked at the space behind them. They knew Ronaldo's movement in the box. They subconsciously dropped five yards deeper toward their own goal to protect themselves. The Frankfurt defensive line fractured.

The space in the midfield, which Frankfurt had just fought so hard to close, returned instantly.

In the sixty-seventh minute, United exploited it.

Varane played a pass into the midfield to Van de Beek. Because the Frankfurt defense dropped deep to deal with Ronaldo, Götze was too far away to press Van de Beek.

Van de Beek had time to turn. He looked up.

He saw Kvaratskhelia making a diagonal run from the right wing into the center.

Van de Beek played a perfect, weighted pass along the grass. Kvaratskhelia received the ball in stride. He was thirty yards from goal.

Ndicka realized the danger. He stepped up aggressively to challenge him.

Kvaratskhelia did not slow down. He pushed the ball past Ndicka's left side and sprinted entirely around his right side. He completely bypassed the center-back with raw, terrifying acceleration.

Kvaratskhelia entered the penalty area. Trapp rushed off his line again to close the angle.

Kvaratskhelia looked up. He saw Ronaldo making a run toward the far post. Trapp saw it too. Trapp hesitated, shifting his weight slightly to his left to prepare for a cross to Ronaldo.

Kvaratskhelia saw the hesitation. He did not cross. He opened his right foot and fired a powerful, low shot toward the near post.

Trapp dove back to his right, but he was completely wrong-footed. The ball hit the back of the net.

Goal. Three-nil to Manchester United.

"Kvaratskhelia again!" Drury's voice cracked with excitement. "He leaves Ndicka in his wake! He deceives Trapp! And Manchester United have surely secured the Super Cup! Two for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia tonight!"

"It is brilliant play again, Peter," McCoist laughed. "Ronaldo's movement at the back post completely freezes the goalkeeper. Trapp thinks the pass is going to Ronaldo, and Kvaratskhelia just tucks it into the near post. Clinical. Absolute devastation on the counter-attack."

Kvaratskhelia ran toward the corner flag, pointing at Van de Beek again. Ronaldo ran over and hugged Kvaratskhelia, smiling widely. The United players swarmed them. The match was effectively over.

Frankfurt looked completely broken. The third goal destroyed their remaining belief. They kicked off again, but they just passed the ball backward. They did not want to concede a fourth. They looked ready for the final whistle.

Marcus Vale made his final substitutions. He brought on Bruno Guimarães and Scott McTominay for Van de Beek and Zakaria. He wanted to close the game out with fresh, aggressive legs.

"Vale makes the changes," Drury said. "Bruno Guimarães and McTominay enter. He is shutting the door, locking it, and throwing away the key."

The final twenty minutes of the match were a formality. United controlled the ball easily. Bruno Guimarães and McTominay won every tackle in the midfield.

In the seventy-fifth minute, Sancho tried to score a goal of his own. He received the ball on the left touchline, performed a step-over to beat Touré, and curled a beautiful shot toward the top right corner. Trapp made a brilliant, flying save to deny him, tipping the ball over the crossbar.

In the eighty-second minute, Trippier crossed the ball perfectly from the right flank. Ronaldo leaped incredibly high above Ndicka and headed the ball powerfully downward. The ball bounced violently on the grass and hit the crossbar before going over. Ronaldo clapped his hands, acknowledging the fantastic cross.

Frankfurt offered nothing in attack. Borré looked exhausted, walking around the center circle. Götze could not find the ball. Kamada was completely invisible against the fresh legs of McTominay.

The clock ticked toward ninety minutes. The United fans sang loudly. They sang songs about winning European trophies. They sang songs about Helsinki.

The fourth official held up the board for two minutes of added time.

United kept the ball near the corner flag. Kvaratskhelia and Trippier played short passes back and forth to each other, wasting the final seconds.

The referee looked at his watch. He placed the whistle in his mouth. He blew it three times.

"And there is the full-time whistle!" Drury announced, his voice carrying the finality of the result. "Manchester United conquer Helsinki! They add the UEFA Super Cup to their Champions League crown. A flawless three-nil victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. But above all, the record is matched! 43 games without defeat. Marcus Vale's invincible red storm equals the historic top-five league record set by Juventus. History has been written under the Finnish sky."

"They were dominant throughout the game, Peter," McCoist agreed. "From minute one to minute ninety. Frankfurt had no answer for the speed of the transitions. To go 43 games unbeaten at this level of football is simply staggering. A legendary achievement."

Down on the pitch, the players raised their arms. De Gea ran out of his penalty area and hugged Maguire. Kvaratskhelia picked up the match ball and tucked it under his arm. Ronaldo shook hands with the Frankfurt players.

Marcus Vale walked onto the pitch. He shook hands with Oliver Glasner, offering a polite nod. He patted Kvaratskhelia on the back.

The presentation stage was built on the pitch. The UEFA Super Cup trophy shone brightly under the stadium lights.

The Frankfurt players walked up the stairs first to receive their runners-up medals. They looked devastated.

Then, the Manchester United squad walked up the stairs. The fans cheered for every single player. Bruno Fernandes received his medal. Kvaratskhelia received his medal. Cristiano Ronaldo received his medal.

Harry Maguire walked up last. He shook hands with the UEFA president. He walked over to the trophy. He grabbed the silver handles tightly. He stood in the center of the squad, surrounded by his teammates.

Maguire lifted the trophy high into the air.

Silver confetti exploded from the stage. The players cheered wildly. Fireworks went off around the stadium roof, lighting up the Helsinki sky.

Marcus Vale stood on the pitch, watching the celebration from a distance. He kept his hands in his pockets. He turned around and walked down the tunnel.

@UtdReport: FULL-TIME in Helsinki! Manchester United 3-0 Eintracht Frankfurt. Goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (2) and a Bruno Fernandes rocket secure the UEFA Super Cup! With this victory, Marcus Vale's side equals the all-time top-5 league record of 43 GAMES UNBEATEN! History made! 🔴🏆 #MUFC

@SimonStoneBBC: A masterclass from Marcus Vale's side tonight. Complete tactical dominance. Frankfurt could not handle the vertical speed of United's transitions. Another trophy for the cabinet, and United officially equal Juventus' legendary 43-game unbeaten run across the top European leagues.

@ScouseTom_LFC: Winning a Super Cup against a mid-table German team doesn't make you big. Let's see you try that direct nonsense at Anfield.

@StretfordEndLoud: Imagine watching your team equal Juventus' all-time top 5 leagues unbeaten record of 43 games while playing beautiful, fast football and still trying to hate. Liverpool fans are absolutely crying tonight. 😭

@TacticsNerd: Donny van de Beek was excellent tonight. His first-time passing completely bypassed the Frankfurt midfield press.

Image: A photo of Kevin Trapp looking completely confused as Bruno Fernandes's shot hits the top corner. Text: Trapp trying to locate the ball.

@GunnerDan: United look decent, but let's be honest, Frankfurt sold their best players this summer. It wasn't a real test. The 43-game run is impressive, but Arsenal would give them a proper game.

@UtdResponse: You haven't seen Champions League football in five years, Dan. We just equaled the longest unbeaten run in top-five league history. Sit down and watch the big clubs collect silverware in peace.

Image: A picture of a high-speed bullet train overtaking a slow bicycle. Text: United's transition play vs City's slow possession.

@SanchoFanClub: Jadon was a constant nightmare for Touré tonight on the left wing. Those step-overs are illegal in twenty countries. Touré had no idea where he was.

@ChelseaBlue: Enjoy your little plate and your record. Chelsea are building a proper project under the new ownership. We will see who is laughing in May.

@RedDevilCentral: Another trophy under Marcus Vale. The man has been here less than a year, and we are already collecting silver like it's a hobby. 43 GAMES UNBEATEN. We've officially matched Juventus' top-five league record! 🐐

Image: The standard Drake meme rejecting possession football and accepting three-pass goals.

@GermanFootballHub: Tough night for Frankfurt. They missed Kostic severely. United's physical intensity in the midfield was just too much for Sow and Rode to handle. Vale's tactical machine looks unstoppable right now.

@CR7_Goat: Cristiano Ronaldo looked incredibly sharp when he came on. His physical presence alone forced their defense to drop deep, opening spaces for Khvicha's second. 43 games clear of Europe.

@AnfieldEd: Enjoy the honeymoon period, United fans. Vale's tactics demand too much running. Your squad will be completely dead by December and that 43-game bubble will burst.

@StretfordEnd: Keep praying for our downfall, Ed. 43 games says our fitness looks incredible. We didn't even look tired in the ninetieth minute tonight.

Image: A photo of Harry Maguire lifting the trophy while Liverpool and City fans watch through a window.

@JamesDucker: Harry Maguire was immense tonight. Won every single aerial duel against Borré. The captaincy looks very natural on him under this management as they secure their 43rd consecutive match without defeat.

Image: The "I am once again asking" Bernie Sanders meme. Text: Rival fans once again asking Marcus Vale to play slow possession football so they can defend it.

@BrunoMagnifico: That Bruno Fernandes strike was absolute filth. Twenty-five yards out, pure power, straight into the stanchion. What a way to seal game number 43.

@Spurs_Al: United are looking dangerous, but the Premier League is a marathon, not a sprint. One injury to Zakaria and their entire midfield structure collapses, ending this streak.

@UtdStand: We literally have Garner, McTominay, and Guimaraes ready on the bench, Al. Our squad depth is the best it has been in a decade.

@TrueBlue_CFV: United celebrating a Super Cup like they won the treble. Small club mentality.

@UtdUpdates: No injuries reported after the match. Ronaldo got thirty-five valuable minutes. Dybala looked great in the false nine role. Victory secured, record matched at 43. Excellent management.

Image: A generic cartoon of a giant red wave swallowing a small white boat. Text: United's attack hitting the Frankfurt defense tonight.

@GlazersOut2021: Brilliant win. The new owners are letting the football people do their job, and the results are showing on the pitch. 43 games unbeaten, matching Europe's elite. Manchester United is back where it belongs.
