Manchester United Revival

Chapter 80: MUN vs LIV UCL 2022 Final - 1

The sun dipped below the Parisian skyline, casting long shadows across the Stade de France. Eighty thousand supporters filled the concrete bowl. Red smoke drifted from the stands, hovering over the immaculate grass.

Down on the pitch, positioned near the halfway line, the CBS Sports desk stood under the stadium lights. The Champions League trophy rested on a podium next to the desk, gleaming in the floodlights.

Kate Abdo looked into the main camera. The red 'ON AIR' light flashed.

"Welcome to Paris," Kate said, her voice cutting through the stadium noise. "The pinnacle of European club football. Tonight, two English giants collide. Liverpool chase their seventh European crown to cap off an incredible season. Manchester United look to complete a resurrection under their enigmatic manager."

Kate turned to her right, gesturing to her panel of pundits.

"Joining me tonight to break it all down," Kate continued, maintaining absolute professional composure. "A man who conquered this competition, won a World Cup, and remains an icon of the game... Thierry Henry."

Thierry offered a smooth, confident nod to the camera.

"Alongside him," Kate went on, turning to the man sitting in the middle. "A Champions League winner with Liverpool in 2005. A pundit who currently sits in fear of Marcus Vale forcing him into a live television apology... Jamie Carragher."

Jamie shifted in his seat, crossing his arms defensively.

"And finally," Kate said, pausing for dramatic effect. She turned to the man on her left. "A man who burst onto the scene as a defender, made five Champions League appearances in his entire career, but brings five million laughs to this desk... Micah Richards."

Micah Richards lost his composure entirely. He fell back in his chair, his booming, infectious laugh echoing across the pitchside setup. He slapped the desk repeatedly.

"Wow, Kate!" Micah shouted, shaking his head. "Cold-blooded! Five appearances! You had to bring the stats up before the final!"

Thierry Henry pressed his lips together, suppressing a wide smile, and picked up his pen. "The numbers do not lie, Micah."

"Right, let us get to business," Kate said, holding a printed card. She turned to Carragher. "Jamie, when Marcus Vale revealed his five-hundred-million-pound release clause in an interview months ago, you took to Twitter. You tweeted a clown emoji."

"I stand by it!" Jamie squeaked, his voice rising an octave in defense. "Who puts a five-hundred-million clause on a manager? It was a completely logical reaction at the time!"

"And when a reporter told Marcus about your tweet," Kate continued relentlessly, "Marcus responded by saying, 'I will be waiting for his apology, which would be your speciality.' Since then, United remain unbeaten. They won the FA Cup, beating Liverpool. They knocked out Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Atletico Madrid to reach the final. Jamie... if Manchester United lift that trophy tonight, will you apologize to Marcus Vale?"

Micah leaned over, tapping Jamie on the shoulder. "You have to do it, Jamie. He has you in a corner. He cooked you."

"If he wins tonight," Jamie said, leaning into the microphone. "If he actually beats Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool... then yes. I will apologize. But it is not going to happen! Liverpool are going to run them off the pitch!"

Thierry Henry chuckled. "Jamie, you said that before the FA Cup final. You said that before the Anfield game. You keep expecting Marcus Vale to fail, and he keeps finding a way to survive. You must respect the coaching."

Kate turned to the tactical monitor. "Let us look at the lineups. Marcus Vale did the unthinkable yesterday. He sat in a press conference and named his starting eleven, twenty-four hours before kickoff. We all thought it was a bluff. We thought he was playing mind games with Klopp. But an hour ago, UEFA released the official team sheets."

The graphic flashed on the screen.

"He did not bluff," Kate announced. "He told the truth. David de Gea starts in goal. A back three of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphaël Varane, and Harry Maguire. Kieran Trippier and Luke Shaw operate as the wing-backs. Denis Zakaria and Scott McTominay hold the center of the pitch. Bruno Fernandes plays ahead of them. And up front, Paulo Dybala partners with Cristiano Ronaldo."

"Thierry, break this down for us," Kate said. "He leaked his lineup. We see the 3-4-1-2 shape. How does this counter Liverpool?"

Thierry picked up his digital pen and stepped up to the touch-screen monitor. He dragged the icons into position.

"Look at the midfield," Thierry explained, circling Zakaria and McTominay. "He selects his two most physical players. He knows Liverpool press instantly. Fabinho, Thiago, Henderson. They hunt the ball. Vale does not want his midfielders to pass through the press. He wants them to destroy it. McTominay and Zakaria will break up the play."

Thierry moved his pen up the pitch.

"But the key is here," Thierry said, circling Paulo Dybala. "Dybala operates as the second striker. He drops deep. He plays between the lines. When United clear the ball, Dybala will drop into the midfield. He will receive the ball under pressure, hold off Fabinho, and win fouls. He connects the defense to the attack. Vale wants control in the transitions."

"But Thierry," Micah interjected. "You have Ronaldo up there. You play a thirty-seven-year-old against a high line. Is that not a risk?"

"Ronaldo is the ultimate equalizer," Thierry stated firmly. "He does not need to run fifty yards. He only needs to run five yards inside the penalty box. Dybala wins the foul. Fernandes delivers the free-kick. Ronaldo scores. That is the game plan. It is cynical, but it works."

Kate turned back to Jamie. "Jamie, Liverpool's lineup. It is what we expected. The strongest possible eleven. How does Klopp handle the fact that Vale gave him the answers to the test yesterday?"

"Klopp ignores it," Jamie said confidently. "He has to. If you spend your time worrying about what Marcus Vale is doing, you forget your own game. Liverpool play heavy-metal football. They will press from the first whistle. They will target Harry Maguire. They will target McTominay on the ball. They have Mo Salah. Salah wants revenge for the FA Cup final. He will not be kept quiet twice."

"Prediction time," Kate announced, looking at her panel. "Who lifts the trophy tonight?"

"Liverpool," Jamie said instantly. "Three-nil. United cannot ride their luck forever. Klopp gets his revenge."

"I also go with Liverpool," Micah added, nodding. "The attacking quality is too high. Díaz, Mané, Salah. They will break the wall eventually. Two-one to Liverpool."

Kate looked at Thierry. "Titi?"

"My head says Liverpool," Thierry reasoned. "They possess the better system. They possess the better squad. But there is an aura around Marcus Vale. He finds ways to win matches he should lose. However... I think Liverpool's intensity will overwhelm them in Paris. Liverpool to win in extra time."

Kate smiled at the camera. "Three votes for Liverpool. But I go with my favorite club. Manchester United to win it. Cristiano Ronaldo to score the winner. Jamie Carragher to deliver a public apology live on this network."

Micah laughed loudly, slapping the desk. "Come on, United! Do it for the apology!"

---

Miles away from the television studio, Mark Goldbridge sat in his streaming room. The United Stand broadcast went live to a massive audience of nervous supporters. Goldbridge paced back and forth behind his desk before finally sitting down.

"Right. Two hours to go," Goldbridge said, rubbing his hands together. "Paris. Liverpool. The Champions League final. I pace the floors. I cannot sleep. This is the biggest match of our lives."

He clicked his mouse, bringing up a graphic of the official team sheets.

"He actually did it," Goldbridge said, his eyes wide. "Marcus Vale leaked the starting eleven yesterday. De Gea. Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Maguire. Trippier, Shaw. Zakaria, McTominay. Fernandes. Dybala, Ronaldo. The arrogance of the man! He handed Jurgen Klopp the team sheet and said, 'Try and beat it.'"

Goldbridge pointed at the screen.

"Dybala starting is massive," Goldbridge stated. "We need his close control. Liverpool will press us like wild dogs. Dybala can receive the ball, turn, and find Fernandes. If Dybala holds the ball, Ronaldo gets the space."

Goldbridge clapped his hands. "My final score prediction. United weather the storm. De Gea makes saves. We hit them on the break. United win two-one. Now, let us take some fan questions."

---

Simultaneously, the Liverpool fan channels conducted their own previews. On The Redmen TV, Paul Machin and Chris Pajak sat in their studio, surrounded by Liverpool memorabilia.

Paul brought up the official lineups.

"Klopp starts the strongest eleven," Paul said. "Alisson, Trent, Konaté, Van Dijk, Robbo. Fabinho, Thiago, Henderson. Salah, Mané, Díaz. We need Díaz to attack Wan-Bissaka constantly. Make him work."

"Vale plays the team he leaked," Chris added. "De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Maguire, Shaw. Trippier, Zakaria, McTominay, Fernandes. Dybala, Ronaldo. The 3-4-1-2. It is a brick wall."

"Final score prediction?" Paul asked.

"We break them down eventually," Chris said. "Liverpool win two-nil. Now, let us look at the fan questions."

---

The social media timeline erupted. The combination of the leaked starting eleven, the historical rivalry, and the looming kickoff sent fans into an absolute frenzy.

Deep inside the corridors of the Stade de France, the atmosphere inside the Liverpool dressing room vibrated with tension.

The players returned from their warm-ups. They took off their training jackets. They strapped on their shin pads.

Jurgen Klopp stood in the center of the room. He wore his standard tracksuit and a baseball cap. He looked around the room, making eye contact with Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, and Mohamed Salah.

"Listen to me," Klopp's voice boomed, silencing the room instantly. "You hear the noise. You saw the press conference yesterday. The media talks about Marcus Vale. They talk about his mind games. They talk about his low block."

Klopp raised his hand, pointing a finger at his own temple.

"It does not matter!" Klopp shouted. "It does not matter what formation he plays. It does not matter what mind games he tries to play in the press. He leaked his lineup. We expected it. We do not react to his games. We make them react to us!"

He paced across the tiled floor.

"We are Liverpool!" Klopp declared. "We play our football. We set the tempo. When they get the ball, we hunt them. We suffocate them. We do not let Zakaria turn. We do not let Fernandes look up. We force them into mistakes. We play with passion. We play with intensity. If they put ten men in the box, we break the door down!"

Klopp stopped pacing. He looked at Salah.

"Win your duels," Klopp instructed. He looked at Van Dijk. "Win the headers."

He stepped back. Jordan Henderson stood up from his bench. The Liverpool captain stepped into the center of the room. He clapped his hands together loudly, his face flushed red with adrenaline.

"We leave nothing out there today!" Henderson roared, his voice echoing fiercely off the metal lockers. "This is everything we worked for! Ninety minutes of focus! We run harder than them! We fight harder than them! They think they can sit back and invite us onto them? We punish them! Let's go out there and bring number seven home!"

The Liverpool squad roared in unison. They grabbed their water bottles, slapped each other on the back, and marched toward the door. The energy electrified the room. They prepared for war.

---

High above the pitch, inside the luxurious UEFA Directors' Box at the Stade de France, the most powerful figures in European football gathered. The glass-fronted suite provided a perfect view of the stadium.

Sir Alex Ferguson stood near the window, holding a glass of red wine. He looked down at the pitch, his face a mixture of nerves and pride.

"A marvelous atmosphere," Ferguson said, turning to the man standing next to him.

Alexander Vance, the CEO of the Axiom Group, offered a polite smile. Vance wore a tailored charcoal suit. "It is the grandest stage, Sir Alex."

Sitting on the plush leather sofas behind them were the owners of the Axiom Group. Arthur Sterling and Maria Silva commanded the room with quiet authority. Next to them sat Elena Sterling, Marcus's sister, and Tomas and Ines Silva, his maternal grandparents.

To the footballing world, Arthur Sterling and Maria Silva were simply the mysterious corporate owners who had purchased Manchester United.

"Your manager has done a phenomenal job, Arthur," Ferguson said, raising his glass to the Axiom owner. "Marcus Vale. A masterstroke of an appointment. He brought the discipline back to my club. He has the entire Liverpool squad second-guessing themselves."

Arthur Sterling offered a reserved, polite smile, hiding his paternal pride. "We believed he possessed the necessary vision, Sir Alex. He implements the system we demand."

Elena Sterling smirked quietly, taking a sip of water. She watched her brother down on the touchline, standing with his hands deep in his coat.

A few rows down in the VIP tier, a collection of Manchester United legends took their seats. David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, and Roy Keane leaned forward, looking at the tactical setup on the pitch.

"He leaked the team sheet," Rooney said, shaking his head. "He actually leaked it. In a Champions League final."

"I like it," Roy Keane stated bluntly, crossing his arms. "It shows arrogance. He tells Klopp to come and get him. No fear. Just football."

Scholes nodded quietly. "If he pulls this off, he secures his legacy tonight. The block has to hold."

Back in the primary suite, Alexander Vance caught Arthur Sterling's eye. Vance offered a very subtle nod. The cover story held perfectly. The footballing world marveled at Marcus Vale the tactician, completely unaware they were watching the heir to the Axiom empire.

---

The concrete tunnel beneath the stadium stands separated the two squads with a metal railing.

The Manchester United squad arrived first. They lined up on the left side of the railing. They stood in silence.

Harry Maguire stood at the front of the line. He stared straight ahead at the tunnel exit. Behind him, Raphaël Varane rolled his shoulders. Aaron Wan-Bissaka stared blankly at the floor.

Cristiano Ronaldo stood at the end of the line. He bounced lightly on his toes, visualizing the pitch.

The heavy doors opened. The Liverpool squad filed into the tunnel.

The contrast hit immediately. The Liverpool players carried the chaotic energy of Henderson's speech with them. Henderson shouted encouragement. Andy Robertson jumped up and down, hitting his boots against the concrete. They filled their side of the tunnel with noise and movement.

Virgil van Dijk stood at the front, next to Maguire. Van Dijk glanced over at the United captain. Maguire did not look back.

Mohamed Salah walked past Luke Shaw. Salah stared directly at the United defender, his eyes locked on his opponent. Shaw ignored him, staring blankly ahead.

The United players maintained their discipline. They did not engage in the pre-match posturing. Marcus Vale conditioned them to suppress their emotions. They operated as a unit.

A UEFA official raised his hand, signaling the countdown.

---

High up in the main commentary gantry, suspended above the thousands of roaring fans, Peter Drury leaned into his microphone. Jim Beglin sat beside him, adjusting his headset.

The camera panned across the massive crowd, showing the sea of red banners and waving flags.

"Paris awaits its kings," Peter Drury's poetic voice sailed over the global broadcast feed. "The City of Light serves as the ultimate battleground. The climax of the European football calendar. A rivalry forged in the industrial north of England, now exported to the grandest stage of them all. Welcome to the Stade de France. Welcome to the UEFA Champions League Final."

Drury paused, letting the noise of the stadium filter through the broadcast.

"Liverpool Football Club," Drury continued. "Jurgen Klopp's heavy-metal machine. They arrive in Paris seeking their seventh European Cup. They seek to cement this era of their history in gold. They play with passion, with fury, and with a relentless desire to overwhelm their opponents."

The camera cut to the Manchester United lineup standing in the tunnel.

"And facing them," Drury said, his voice dropping slightly. "Manchester United. A club resurrected from the ashes of a fractured season. Marcus Vale rebuilt this institution with cold, unforgiving pragmatism. They do not entertain. They do not compromise. They simply win. They remain unbeaten. They seek their fourth European crown."

The camera zoomed in on Cristiano Ronaldo's face.

"That man is at the center of attention," Drury emphasized, the gravity of the moment carrying his words. "Cristiano Ronaldo. He returned to Manchester to chase immortality. Tonight, he stands on the precipice of history. If he lifts that trophy tonight, he secures his sixth Champions League title. He joins the legendary Paco Gento as the only men to ever reach that mountaintop. He is the Emperor of Europe. Does he have one final conquest left in him?"

"It is a fascinating tactical clash, Peter," Jim Beglin added. "Marcus Vale leaked his lineup. He starts Scott McTominay and Denis Zakaria to destroy the midfield. He starts Paulo Dybala to retain the ball. He challenges Liverpool to break him down. Jurgen Klopp must find the lockpick tonight, or United steal this trophy on the counter-attack."

---

The UEFA anthem began to play over the stadium speakers. The referee picked up the match ball.

The two teams marched out of the tunnel.

The noise reached a deafening pitch. The flashes from thousands of cameras lit up the night. The players lined up on the pitch. The iconic Champions League anthem played, sending shivers down the spines of everyone inside the stadium.

Marcus Vale walked out of the tunnel behind his players.

He wore the club suit in his usual way. He kept his hands buried deep inside his pockets. He walked slowly, his posture slouched. He looked around the massive stadium with a look of indifference.

He walked toward the technical areas.

Jurgen Klopp stood near the halfway line, waiting. Klopp wore his tracksuit, his face a mask of fierce concentration.

Marcus approached him. Marcus pulled his right hand out of his pocket.

Klopp extended his hand.

They shook hands. The grip felt firm. The cameras snapped wildly, capturing the moment the two tactical philosophies met.

"Good luck, Jurgen," Marcus said. His voice sounded calm. His expression remained entirely blank.

Klopp stared into Marcus's eyes, searching for any sign of nervous energy. He found nothing.

"We play our game, Marcus," Klopp replied.

Marcus offered a slow, single nod. He released Klopp's hand. He turned his back and walked toward the United dugout. He sat down in his leather seat. He reached into his pocket. He pulled out the red tactical magnet.

He flipped it over his knuckles.

Click. Click.

The referee looked at his watch. He brought the whistle to his lips.
