Chapter 65 65: The Anfield Fallout
The immediate aftermath of a Manchester United victory at Anfield was rarely quiet, but today, a strange, suffocating silence had fallen over the red half of Merseyside. The Kop, usually a swirling vortex of scarves and defiance even in defeat, had emptied out with startling speed.
The only sound echoing around the cavernous, darkening stadium came from the away end, where three thousand Manchester United supporters were being held back by stewards, singing Marcus Vale's name into the freezing evening air.
Deep in the bowels of the stadium, the press room was a tightly packed, heavily perspiring box of journalists. The energy in the room was electric. They had just witnessed a managerial masterclass of the most disrespectful order.
Marcus Vale had publicly leaked his starting eleven and his exact tactical blueprint twenty-four hours in advance, challenging Jurgen Klopp to break it down.
Klopp had failed.
---
The door to the press auditorium swung open, and Jurgen Klopp marched in.
The Liverpool manager looked completely frazzled. His signature baseball cap was pulled low, his trademark spectacles slightly skewed, and his jaw was locked tight. He sat down heavily behind the microphones, letting out a sharp, frustrated breath that sounded like a hiss through his teeth.
"Questions for Jurgen, please," the press officer said nervously.
A reporter from The Athletic stood up first. "Jurgen, a two-nil defeat at home to your biggest rivals. Despite having over eighty percent possession, Liverpool struggled to create clear-cut chances. What went wrong today?"
Klopp leaned into the microphone, his eyes flashing with a mix of anger and disbelief. He shook his head, a bitter, sarcastic smile forming on his lips.
"What went wrong?" Klopp repeated, his German accent thickening with his agitation. "I will tell you what went wrong. We played a football match, and the other team decided they did not want to participate in the football match. Honestly, I don't understand it. I really don't. We are playing at Anfield, it is the biggest derby in the world, and they come here and put ten men inside their own penalty box from the first second. Ten men!"
He threw his hands up in exasperation, hitting the desk.
"I mean, look, I respect the result. They scored two goals on the counter-attack, congratulations. But football-wise? How can you play like this with the squad Manchester United has? They have Ronaldo, they have Fernandes, they have Sancho. And they play like... like a team fighting relegation! It is anti-football. We tried everything. We passed, we moved, but the grass was a little bit dry today, the ball was not moving as fast as we wanted, and the wind in the second half made the high balls very difficult to judge. But mostly, it is just impossible to play against a team that has no intention to cross the halfway line. It is not our day. But I am proud of my boys. We tried to play football."
A journalist from Sky Sports took the microphone. "Jurgen, Marcus Vale told you exactly how he was going to play in his press conference yesterday. He gave you the starting eleven. Did that mind game affect your preparation?"
Klopp's face flushed a deep, furious crimson.
"Mind games?" Klopp scoffed, leaning back in his chair. "I don't care about his press conferences! I care about what happens on the pitch. He told us he would defend deep? Wow, what a genius! Any team can put eleven men behind the ball and pray to God that their goalkeeper makes three world-class saves. We knew what they would do, but finding the space when there is literally no space... it is a lottery. Today, they won the lottery. Tomorrow, they lose it. We move on."
Klopp abruptly stood up, not waiting for the press officer to conclude the session, and stormed out of the room. The journalists exchanged wide-eyed glances. The Liverpool manager was rattled.
---
Five minutes later, the door clicked open again.
Marcus Vale strolled into the press room. He looked entirely out of place in the high-stakes environment of Premier League management. He was still wearing his oversized trench coat, his hands shoved deeply into the pockets. His shoulders were slouched, and his eyes were heavy, half-closed, as if he had just been abruptly woken from a very pleasant nap.
He shuffled to the center chair, sat down. He let out a soft, contented sigh and looked at the journalists through hooded eyes.
"Marcus," a reporter from The Times began, almost hesitantly. "Jurgen Klopp has just sat in that exact chair and accused you of playing anti-football. He said it was impossible to play against a team that doesn't want to participate in the game. What is your response to that?"
Marcus blinked slowly. He looked down at his teacup, tracing the rim with his thumb.
"Anti-football," Marcus repeated, his voice a smooth, low, hypnotic baritone that instantly quieted the entire room. He offered a small, polite smile. "That is a very romantic term. Jurgen is a romantic. He likes heavy metal music, he likes emotion, he likes chaos. He wanted us to come to Anfield, open our defensive shape, and play a beautiful, chaotic game of basketball so his wingers could run into the spaces."
"I do not like chaos," Marcus stated simply. "I like control. Jurgen wanted a heavy metal concert. I gave him a library. He is upset because we forced him to read instead of dance. We participated in the game exactly as much as we needed to. We scored two goals. Liverpool scored zero. Defending is an art. We built a structurally perfect wall, and Liverpool spent ninety minutes banging their heads against it. If he considers a perfectly executed defensive plan to be 'anti-football,' then I am very happy to be the villain of his romance."
The room was silent save for the furious clacking of laptop keys.
"Marcus," Neil Custis from The Sun asked. "You leaked the starting eleven yesterday. You told Klopp exactly what you were going to do. Was that the ultimate sign of disrespect, or confidence?"
Marcus tilted his head, a playful, lazy glint in his eye.
"It was neither, Neil," Marcus drawled. "Journalists always ask about the lineup. I decided to save us all five minutes. I knew Jurgen would spend all night wondering if it was a trap. By telling him the truth, I introduced a variable of paranoia into his tactical preparation. He overthought the problem. But the truth is, even knowing the plan, Liverpool didn't have the tools to break the lock. I gave him the answers to the test, and he still failed."
They asks a few more questions about Ronaldo, De Gea and other player which Marcus deflects easily
---
The broadcast cut back to the Sky Sports studio overlooking the pitch. The post-match panel consisted of host Dave Jones, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, Manchester United legend Gary Neville, and the notoriously blunt Roy Keane.
The studio was a powder keg.
"Welcome back to Sky Sports," Dave Jones said, trying to keep a straight face. "We have just heard from both managers after Manchester United's two-nil victory here at Anfield. And Jamie, it is fair to say Jurgen Klopp was furious with Manchester United's approach. And looking at you, I'd say you agree with him."
Jamie Carragher was visibly vibrating with rage. His face was flushed, his hands gripping the edges of the studio desk.
"It is a disgrace, Dave! It is an absolute disgrace to the history of Manchester United!" Carragher exploded, his Scouse accent piercing the studio. "You are Manchester United! You are one of the biggest, richest football clubs on the planet! You do not come to Anfield and play like a relegation team fighting for a point in December! Look at their heat map! They spent ninety minutes camped inside their own penalty box!"
Carragher pointed aggressively at the digital screen showing United's ultra-deep defensive shape.
"Jurgen is right! It is anti-football! Vale showed zero ambition to win that game! They just sat there, kicked the ball away, time-wasted, and got lucky that Van Dijk made one mistake and Ronaldo pounced! It's cowardice! If you are a top manager, you come to Anfield and you go toe-to-toe!"
Across the desk, Gary Neville was currently undergoing a struggle. He had his lips pressed tightly together, his cheeks puffed out, desperately trying to suppress a fit of hysterical laughter. His eyes were watering as he watched Carragher melt down on live television.
"Gary, you're smiling," Dave Jones pointed out.
Neville couldn't hold it in anymore. He let out a high-pitched, squeaky laugh, covering his face with his hands for a second before composing himself.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Neville giggled, his voice shaking with sheer joy. "But Jamie, you are literally crying on national television because your team got tactically done! You are crying!"
"I am not crying!" Carragher shouted back. "I am talking about the integrity of the game!"
"The integrity of the game?!" Roy Keane interrupted, his voice a low, terrifying growl that instantly shut Carragher up.
"Jamie, stop your whining," Keane said bluntly, completely devoid of sympathy. "I am sitting here listening to you and Klopp talk about 'anti-football'. What a nonsense. The objective of a football match is to score more goals than the opposition and keep a clean sheet. Marcus Vale just came to Anfield, kept a clean sheet, and scored two goals. That is the definition of perfect football."
Keane pointed a finger at the table. "You expect them to come here, open up, and let Salah and Mané run in behind? Why? So Liverpool can win five-nil again and you can sit here gloating? Marcus Vale is a realist. He looked at Liverpool, he realized they are brilliant in transition, so he took the transition away. He built a wall. And let me tell you, I loved every single second of it."
"You loved that?!" Carragher stared at Keane in disbelief.
"I absolutely loved it," Keane doubled down, a rare, genuine smile appearing on his face. "I saw eleven Manchester United players defending for their lives. I saw Scott McTominay coming on and smashing Thiago into the advertising hoardings. I saw Wan-Bissaka making slide tackles like his life depended on it. I saw grit, I saw discipline, and I saw a manager who doesn't give a single toss about what the media thinks. He leaked his team sheet, Jamie! He told Klopp, 'Here is my team, here is my tactic, come and break it down.' And your brilliant Jurgen Klopp couldn't do it. Liverpool were toothless today. Don't blame Marcus Vale because Liverpool ran out of ideas."
"Roy is spot on," Neville added, having finally recovered his composure. "Jamie, you have to appreciate the managerial masterclass we just witnessed. When Klopp changed to a 4-2-4 and threw everyone in the box, Vale didn't panic. He just brought on Lindelöf, went to a back five, and completely killed the aerial threat. And then, the ultimate insult—when Trent Alexander-Arnold moves into midfield, Vale brings on Elanga and Sancho to hit the exact space Trent left behind for the second goal. It is tactical perfection. It's cold, it's calculating, and it is exactly what United needed."
"It's boring!" Carragher yelled.
"It's two-nil," Keane replied coldly. "Look at the scoreboard, Jamie. The scoreboard never lies."
---
While the mainstream media debated the philosophy of football, the Manchester United fan channels were in a state of unadulterated, chaotic euphoria.
On Stretford Paddock, Stephen Howson and Jay Motty were live streaming from outside Anfield, the glow of the stadium behind them.
"WE HAVE JUST DONE THEM!" Howson roared into the microphone, his face beaming. "We have just gone to Anfield and executed the most disrespectful, beautiful smash and grab in the history of the Premier League! Do you understand the size of Marcus Vale's stones?! He went into the press conference yesterday, leaked the team, said we are playing a low block, and Jurgen Klopp spent 24 hours sweating over it! And then we just did exactly what we said we would do!"
"It's the greatest tactical shithousery I've ever seen, Steve!" Jay Motty laughed, shaking his head. "They had eighty percent possession! Eighty! And they did absolutely nothing with it! Wan-Bissaka had Luis Díaz in his back pocket. Varane and Maguire headed away every single cross. And Cristiano Ronaldo... one chance, one goal. Through the legs of Alisson!"
"Jurgen Klopp is in the presser crying about the grass being dry!" Howson mocked, wiping fake tears from his eyes. "He's crying about the wind! No, Jurgen, you got outclassed by a twenty-seven-year-old kid who drives an old Volvo! The Invincible, Indomitable machine rolls on! Give Marcus Vale a lifetime contract right now!"
Meanwhile, across the country in his green-screen studio, Mark Goldbridge was hosting The United Stand post-match show. The viewer count was ticking past one hundred and fifty thousand live viewers.
Goldbridge was standing up, pacing around his racing chair, his face bright red.
"GET IN THERE! GET IN THERE!" Goldbridge screamed, slamming his hands down on his desk. "Anfield! Silenced! Jurgen Klopp! RATTLED! Jamie Carragher! CRYING ON LIVE TV! Oh my days, this is the greatest day of my life! I am absolutely buzzing! We sat back, we suffered, we defended like Spartan warriors, and we hit them on the break!"
Goldbridge sat down, taking a heavy breath and grabbing his bottle of water.
"Right, let's get to your Superchats, because the chat is moving at the speed of light. ."
He clicked on the screen, highlighting a highlighted message.
@RedDevilDan (£5) - "Mark, is Trent Alexander-Arnold just a glorified right-winger? He got completely exposed by Elanga for the second goal!"
"Dan, spot on mate, spot on!" Goldbridge pointed at the camera. "Trent is a fantastic footballer, but he is a right-winger pretending to be a defender! Klopp pushed him into the midfield because they were desperate, and Marcus Vale immediately brought on Elanga! Elanga has raw, terrifying pace, and he ran into that space Trent left behind and completely ruined Virgil van Dijk! It was a tactical checkmate!"
@Utd_Glory (£10) - "Can we actually beat Real Madrid playing this low block? Benzema is different to Jota."
"It's a great question," Goldbridge said, his tone turning slightly more analytical. "Marcus Vale isn't a one-trick pony. We played a diamond against City, a 4-2-2-2 against Chelsea, and a back-six against Liverpool! He will have a completely different plan for Madrid. Have faith in him!"
@AxiomFanboy (£20) - "Give Marcus Vale a lifetime contract right now. The £500m sacking clause is too low."
"I agree! Make it a billion!" Goldbridge laughed. "Honestly, the man is a genius. He has completely removed the toxicity from this club. There are no leaks, there is no player power. Everyone runs through brick walls for him. If he wants a lifetime contract, Axiom should hand him a blank cheque tomorrow morning."
@SpanishWall_Dave (£5) - "De Gea is prime Lev Yashin. That save from Díaz was illegal."
"Saint Dave! David de Gea!" Goldbridge bowed to the camera. "I have criticized him in the past for his distribution, but his shot-stopping is out of this world! When Díaz headed that ball, I swear my soul left my body. I thought it was 1-1. And De Gea just sticks a leg out! He is the foundation of Vale's low block. World class!"
@ScouseTears (£10) - "Did you see Klopp's presser? Pure salt. Said we played anti-football."
Goldbridge threw his head back and laughed loudly. "Oh, the tears! The salty, delicious Merseyside tears! 'Anti-football!' What does that even mean?! You didn't score! We scored two! That's football, Jurgen! You got completely out-tacticked by a guy who looks like he's ready for bed! Take your heavy metal football and put it in the bin! Marcus Vale plays classical music, and it is beautiful!"
---
The social media fallout was apocalyptic. The hashtag #LIVMUN trended at number one globally, generating millions of interactions as Liverpool fans raged against the injustice of the universe, and United fans reveled in the glorious toxicity of the moment.
@UtdReport: [TRANSCRIPT] Marcus Vale responding to Jurgen Klopp calling his tactics 'anti-football': "Jurgen wanted a heavy metal concert. I gave him a library. He is upset because we forced him to read instead of dance." COLD. BLOODED. 🥶📚 #MUFC
@LFC_Kopite96: It's easy to be arrogant when your goalkeeper saves three certain goals and you get lucky on a counter-attack. Vale is a coward. You can't play like Burnley with a billion-pound squad. Disgusting for the sport.
@UtdReport: @LFC_Kopite96 Sorry, couldn't hear you over the sound of the library being so quiet. Shhhh. 🤫📚
@SkySportsPL: "Jamie, you're whining... Marcus Vale just came to Anfield, kept a clean sheet, and scored two goals. That is the definition of perfect football." - Roy Keane destroying Jamie Carragher in the studio. 🍿📺 #LIVMUN
@GaryNeville_Burner: Gary Neville literally biting his lip so hard it was bleeding trying not to laugh in Carragher's face is the television moment of the decade. 😂
@Marcus_Fan: Marcus Vale continues to rewrite the rules. Leaking your own starting XI to Jurgen Klopp 24 hours before a derby, parking a 6-man defensive line, and winning 2-0 is a level of psychological warfare we haven't seen since prime José Mourinho. 🔴🧠
@Pep_Bald_Genius: Say what you want about Pep, but he at least tries to play football. Vale is destroying the aesthetics of the Premier League.
@Utd_Tactics: @Pep_Bald_Genius He literally beat Pep 3-0 playing transition football. He destroys whatever is in front of him. Cry.
@Tactical_Times: [THREAD] How Marcus Vale neutralized Trent Alexander-Arnold: 1/8 Knowing Liverpool rely heavily on overlapping fullbacks to break down low blocks, Vale instructed Rashford and Greenwood to drop into a flat back-six during sustained possession...
@Tactical_Times: 2/8 This completely choked the wide areas. When Klopp inverted Trent into the midfield in the 80th minute to compensate, Vale immediately brought on Elanga to exploit the exact space Trent vacated. It was a 90-minute trap. 🪤
@Carra23: I stand by what I said. Manchester United are too big of a club to go anywhere and play like that. It's anti-football. 😡
@RioFerdy5: @Carra23 2-0 Jamie. Keep crying mate. The library is closed! 📚🥶
@Carra23: @RioFerdy5 Easy to tweet when you didn't have to watch that dross for 90 minutes.
@TrollFootball: Jurgen Klopp looking for space in the Manchester United penalty area: [Image attached: A man looking through a microscope at a completely blank slide] 😭😭💀 |
@Salah_SZN: Very funny. Wait until Real Madrid get a hold of them. Benzema will score 4 against that low block.
@Goldbridge: Jurgen complaining about the grass being dry and the wind being strong. The Holy Trinity of Klopp excuses! Inject it into my veins! 💉🔴 #MUFC
@Red_Devil_Truth: The best part was Vale walking into the presser looking half asleep while Klopp was having a heart attack. The aura difference is staggering.
@AnfieldWatch: We dominated the game. 82% possession. 15 corners. Sometimes football just isn't fair. They parked a double-decker bus.
@StretfordPadd: @AnfieldWatch 0 goals. 0 points. You got out-managed by a kid in an oversized coat. Hold that.
@Bruno_Prop: Bruno Fernandes sprinting 80 yards in the 88th minute to smash that second goal in... MY CAPTAIN! The fitness levels of this squad under Vale are insane! 🏃♂️💨
@LFC_Central: It was a lucky bounce off Fred's clearance. Pure luck.
@Bruno_Prop: @LFC_Central Hitting a 20-yard volley into the top corner at 20mph is luck? Go to bed mate.
@StretfordPadd: Just a reminder: Marcus Vale has played Chelsea(Twice), Arsenal, Manchester City (twice), and Liverpool. He has scored 16 goals. He has conceded 1 goal. He is UNBEATEN. 🧱🔴
@City_Chief: It won't last. Defensive football always gets found out eventually.
@StretfordPadd: @City_Chief We've been hearing "it won't last" for 26 games now. We are in the FA Cup Final and UCL Semi-Finals. Keep waiting.
@M_Delaney: The mind games from Marcus Vale are fascinating. He uses honesty as a weapon. By telling Klopp the truth about his tactics, he created complete paranoia. He is redefining Premier League psychology. 🧠♟️
@Cristiano: Great team performance! We fought together until the end. Thank you to the fans for the amazing support! 🔴💪🏽 #MUFC
@Messi_Fanboy: You just waited in the box for 90 minutes and got a lucky goal through the keeper's legs.
@CR7_Goat: @Messi_Fanboy A goal is a goal. He silenced Anfield. Again. 🐐🇵🇹
@AfcGunnr: I hate United, but watching Marcus Vale make Klopp and Carragher cry on the same day is the funniest thing to happen in football this year. The 'Library' quote is an instant classic. 😂📚
@SkySportsPL: Is Marcus Vale the most ruthless manager in world football right now? [Video attached: Roy Keane praising Vale's low block while Carragher fumes].
@IanWright0: @SkySportsPL Yes. Without a doubt. He doesn't care about style, he only cares about winning. It's refreshing.
