Chapter 42 42: MCI vs MUN - 2
The away dressing room at the Etihad Stadium was completely silent.
The Manchester United players sat on the wooden benches, sweating heavily, their chests heaving after forty-five minutes of relentless, lung-busting discipline. They had spent the entire first half surviving a blue hurricane, shifting horizontally to plug the gaps, but they had gone down the tunnel leading 1-0.
Marcus Vale stood in the center of the room. He pulled a black marker from his pocket and stepped up to the tactical whiteboard.
"Pep Guardiola knows his inverted fullbacks didn't break our midfield line," Marcus stated, his voice calm and clinical. "He will stretch the pitch to its maximum in the second half. He will instruct Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez to hug the touchlines. They will stand on the chalk. He wants to pull Alex Telles and Kieran Trippier as far away from our center-backs as physically possible. Once that gap opens in the channel, De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva will make penetrating runs straight through the middle."
Marcus drew a series of rapid lines on the board.
"When their wingers go wide, our fullbacks do not follow them," Marcus ordered, turning around to look directly at Denis Zakaria and Bruno Guimarães. "Telles, Trippier, you stay tucked inside. You hold the narrow shape. If Grealish receives the ball out wide, let him have it. Denis, Bruno, your job is to screen De Bruyne and Silva. Do not let them run into the channels. If City wants to cross the ball into the box from the touchline, we will let them. Harry and Raphaël will clear them all day."
He slipped the marker back into his pocket.
"Suffer in the shape," Marcus reminded them quietly. "Wait for the transition."
The two teams emerged back into the freezing Manchester night. The Etihad crowd, frustrated by the first-half display, roared with desperate encouragement as City took the kickoff.
City's shape was immediately different. Grealish and Mahrez practically stood on the white lines of the pitch, stretching the width of the attack to its absolute limit.
In the 48th minute, Rodri sprayed a long diagonal pass out to Mahrez on the right wing. Alex Telles did not sprint out to meet him. He held his position inside, leaving Mahrez completely open out wide.
Mahrez took a touch, looking up, waiting for De Bruyne to make a darting run into the channel between Telles and Harry Maguire.
But Denis Zakaria was standing directly in the passing lane, physically blocking the Belgian's path.
Forced into a decision, Mahrez whipped a cross into the penalty area. Harry Maguire effortlessly headed the ball away.
"Look at the discipline from United," Gary Neville noted on the Sky Sports broadcast. "They are ignoring the wingers to protect the center. It's incredibly brave, but it's forcing City to rely on crosses, which isn't their natural game."
Down on the touchline, Pep Guardiola frantically waved his arms, making a rapid tactical adjustment on the fly. He signaled for Joao Cancelo to overlap Mahrez on the right, attempting to create a two-on-one situation to force Telles out of the penalty area, while pushing De Bruyne even higher to act as a second striker alongside Phil Foden.
City continued to probe, dominating possession, but the frustration was mounting visibly. In the 52nd minute, De Bruyne made a darting run into the box, but Rodri opted to pass the ball backward to Aymeric Laporte. De Bruyne threw his arms up in the air, shouting at his teammate in exasperation. The blue wall was running out of ideas.
In the 55th minute.
Laporte attempted a risky vertical pass through the middle. Bruno Guimarães stepped forward to intercept. The Brazilian midfielder didn't hesitate. He snapped a rapid pass to Jadon Sancho, who had dropped deep to link the play.
Sancho turned and ignited a sprint down the right channel. Joao Cancelo scrambled back, tracking the run. Just as Sancho crossed the halfway line, Cancelo lunged in with a desperate, cynical sliding tackle, wiping Sancho out completely.
The referee blew his whistle immediately, awarding the free-kick and producing a yellow card for the City defender.
The foul occurred thirty-five yards from goal, slightly favoring the right side of the pitch.
Bruno Fernandes and Kieran Trippier jogged over to the ball, discussing the delivery. Inside the penalty area, a chaotic wrestling match was unfolding.
"United have a real opportunity here," Martin Tyler announced. "Trippier has brilliant delivery from these areas, but Fernandes is also standing over it. City are employing a high defensive line to catch United offside."
Inside the box, United lined up in a very strange manner. Instead of spreading out across the penalty area, Harry Maguire, Raphaël Varane, Marcus Rashford, and Cristiano Ronaldo were all bunched tightly together at the far post, standing almost shoulder-to-shoulder.
Suddenly, on a silent trigger, the cluster exploded into motion.
Maguire, Rashford, and Varane all sprinted aggressively toward the six-yard box. The entire Manchester City defensive line panicked and dropped deep with them, terrified of an aerial delivery to the towering center-backs.
The movement completely emptied the penalty spot.
But Varane didn't run all the way to the goal line. He suddenly stopped right on the penalty spot, planted his feet firmly, and executed a flawless, perfectly legal basketball-style screen on Ruben Dias.
Dias crashed into the French defender, unable to move past him.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who had started his run toward the goal, suddenly slammed the brakes on. He peeled backward, fading away from the crowded six-yard box and stepping directly into the massive, empty pocket of space Varane's screen had just protected at the penalty spot.
Bruno Fernandes didn't cross the ball in the air. He faked a lofted delivery, stepped over the ball, and let Trippier strike it. Trippier didn't lift it; he drilled a low, incredibly hard, flat pass directly across the damp grass to the penalty spot.
Ronaldo met the ball completely unmarked. He didn't even have to jump or battle a defender. He simply opened his hips and guided a powerful, side-footed finish straight into the bottom right corner of the net past a helpless Ederson.
"RONALDOOOOO!" Martin Tyler bellowed. "An absolute masterclass from the training ground! Manchester United double their lead at the Etihad!"
The away end erupted in delirium. Ronaldo sprinted toward the corner flag, leaping high into the air and performing his iconic Siuuuu celebration, the roar of the United fans echoing through the stadium.
Down in his technical area, Pep Guardiola dropped to his knees. The Catalan manager buried his face in his hands, completely devastated by the deception of the set-piece routine.
"That is pure tactical genius, Martin," Neville analyzed over the replay. "Look at the deception! Everyone thinks the ball is going high to Maguire. City drop deep. Varane sets a physical pick on Dias, exactly like a basketball play. Ronaldo peels back into the empty space, and the low pass from Trippier is immaculate. City fell for it hook, line, and sinker!"
At 2-0 down, Guardiola was furious. He immediately made two attacking substitutions, bringing on Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gündogan. City threw everything forward in a desperate bid to salvage the match.
The pressure was suffocating, but United's shape held firm. De Gea made a brilliant reflex save to deny a Sterling header in the 68th minute. Three minutes later, De Bruyne found a rare pocket of space on the edge of the box and unleashed a vicious, swerving shot aimed at the top corner.
Raphaël Varane threw his body on the line, launching himself into a desperate, diving block. The ball smashed flush against the Frenchman's ribs, deflecting out for a corner. Varane sprang to his feet, pumping his fists and roaring at his teammates, matched only by the deafening noise of the traveling United supporters singing relentlessly from the away section.
In the 75th minute, the electronic board illuminated on the touchline.
The number 7 flashed in red.
Cristiano Ronaldo was being substituted.
In a Manchester Derby, against your biggest rivals, taking off your star striker was a massive decision. But there was no drama. Marcus and Ronaldo had an explicit agreement regarding his physical workload during a multi-goal lead.
Ronaldo jogged off the pitch, clapping to the away end. He reached the touchline, walked over to Marcus's seat, and offered a fist bump. Marcus bumped his fist and gave a small, satisfied nod. The professional agreement had been honored perfectly.
Scott McTominay sprinted onto the pitch, instantly slotting into the midfield to add physical energy and fresh legs.
Four minutes later, in the 79th minute, Jadon Sancho, who had run himself into the ground executing the pressing traps, was replaced by Donny van de Beek. The Dutchman was instructed to help retain possession and provide an outlet for the exhausted defense.
In the 82nd minute, Bruno Fernandes was withdrawn for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
"A defensive shift from Manchester United," Neville noted as the substitution happened. "He brings on Wan-Bissaka to play as a right-midfielder, directly in front of Trippier. He has essentially built a double-fullback wall to completely shut down Sterling and Grealish on that wing. He is locking the door."
City were desperate. They pushed their entire team into the United half. Even their goalkeeper, Ederson, was standing thirty-five yards out of his own penalty area, acting as an extra passing option to sustain the attacks and sweep up clearances.
In the 88th minute, that desperation proved fatal.
Joao Cancelo received the ball near the center circle. Donny van de Beek immediately sprinted at him, applying pressure. The Dutchman forced Cancelo to turn blindly backward. Panicking under the fierce closing speed, Cancelo attempted a hurried, disguised pass through the center of the pitch.
Scott McTominay anticipated the pass flawlessly. He stepped across and intercepted the ball cleanly on the edge of the United penalty area.
McTominay looked up. The pitch ahead of him was completely empty. Ederson was frantically scrambling backward, trying to return to his goal line.
McTominay didn't hesitate. He took one touch out of his feet, looked at the halfway line, and launched a massive, driven shot from fully sixty yards out.
The entire stadium watched the ball sail through the Manchester sky. It arced beautifully, dropping perfectly over the desperately retreating Ederson, bouncing once inside the six-yard box, and crashing into the back of the empty net.
"MCTOMINAY!" Tyler roared, his voice cracking with disbelief. "From inside his own half! An incredible, audacious strike to seal a famous victory for Manchester United!"
"It's like David Beckham against Wimbledon, Martin!" Gary Neville shouted over the commentary, his voice rising in sheer awe. "Pure, brilliant instinct! Ederson takes a massive gamble playing that high up the pitch, and McTominay punishes him from sixty yards! What an unbelievable finish to this Derby!"
The away end behind the goal descended into chaos. Red smoke drifted into the air as fans tumbled over the seats in delirium. McTominay sprinted toward the corner flag, sliding on his knees before being buried under his celebrating teammates.
Down in the dugout, Marcus Vale remained seated. He simply pulled the red magnet from his pocket, flipped it over his knuckles, and let out a quiet exhale.
For the final few minutes, United simply absorbed pressure. The referee blew the final whistle, bringing the agony of the home side to an end.
FULL TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 0 - 3 MANCHESTER UNITED.
"A tactical masterpiece from Manchester United," Martin Tyler concluded. "They arrived at the Etihad, survived the possession, and punished the Champions with precision. A famous 3-0 victory in the Manchester Derby."
Marcus stood up slowly. He adjusted his heavy coat and walked toward the technical area. Pep Guardiola was waiting, his face pale and exhausted. The two managers shook hands firmly.
"Well played," Guardiola said tightly. "Very organized."
"Thank you, Pep," Marcus replied breezily. "Good luck for the rest of the season."
Marcus turned and walked toward the away end, offering a lazy, polite wave to the deafening United fans. He didn't linger. He turned and strolled down the tunnel, his hands in his pockets, leaving the noise behind.
While the players celebrated in the dressing room, the digital footballing world was already tearing the match apart. The tactical contrast, the set-piece routine, and the sheer audacity of McTominay's goal provided endless material for banter.
@UtdFaithful: Three-nil at the Etihad! The discipline in that defensive block was beautiful. Marcus Vale just gave Pep a lesson! 🔴🔥
@CityZen99: Anti-football at its finest. They parked a double-decker bus in front of their goal. 75% possession for us and we concede three. Disgusting way to play the game.
@markgoldbridge: CITY FANS CRYING ABOUT POSSESSION! 😭 Keep passing it sideways lads, we'll just take the three points! MCTOMINAY FROM SIXTY YARDS! I AM ON MY KNEES!
@FabrizioRomano: Manchester United secure a 3-0 victory in the Manchester Derby. Marcus Vale's transition tactics working perfectly. An incredible away performance. #MCIMUN
@StatmanDave: That set-piece for Ronaldo's goal was brilliant. A clear basketball pick set by Varane to create the empty space for the cut-back. The set-piece coaching is paying off big time.
@TheManUtdWay: Ronaldo getting subbed off at 75 mins and just giving the boss a fist bump. Respect.
@MCFC_Daily: We need to rethink our entire approach against low blocks. De Bruyne looked like he wanted to punch a hole in the wall out of frustration today.
@StretfordPaddock: Did you see McTominay channel his inner David Beckham?! 60 yards out! Ederson was caught taking a stroll in midfield! 😂
@xGPhilosophy: Man City (0.64) 0-3 (1.85) Man Utd. City dominating the ball but restricted to low-quality shots outside the box. United highly clinical with their transitions.
@ChelsTransfer: Pep dropping to his knees when Ronaldo scored the set-piece is the greatest reaction video of the season. He could not believe he got tricked like that.
@rioferdy5: What a performance! Suffer without the ball, clinical with it. Varane putting his body on the line with that diving block was incredible. Manchester is RED! 🔴🧱
@CarlAnka: Vale bringing on Wan-Bissaka to play right-midfield to create a double-fullback wall against Grealish was peak pragmatism. He completely killed the game in the 82nd minute.
@ArsenalFanTV: Say what you want about United, but that counter-attack is terrifying. If they keep defending like this, the league is in trouble.
@City_Xtra: Ederson needs to stay in his box. You can't play sweeper-keeper when the other team is just waiting to launch it over your head. Shocking mistake.
@TifoFootball_: Donny van de Beek coming on just to press Cancelo into a mistake for the third goal. Every single substitution had a distinct tactical purpose today.
@SkySportsPL: A famous victory for Manchester United in the Derby! Marcus Vale's resolute defense holds out against Pep Guardiola's possession machine.
@RedDevil99: Marcus Vale just sitting on the bench playing with a magnet while Pep is dropping to his knees in frustration on the touchline is the funniest thing I've seen all season.
@Kloppite__: United look solid defensively. If they actually keep this up, the title race next year is going to be an absolute bloodbath.
@Squawka: Scott McTominay goal from 60 yards out. Ederson caught sleeping. You cannot write a better ending to a derby.
@David_Ornstein: A disciplined away performance. United's away support was deafening in the final ten minutes. The momentum shift in this city is palpable.
