Chapter 222: The Ancient Seal
Nobody moved.
Robert had said stop, and something in his voice made everyone listen without asking why. The two caravan guards stayed where they were. Ronan held his position. Sai stood with one foot slightly ahead of the other, frozen mid-step. Eissa looked at Robert and waited.
The monument stood six meters ahead. It was covered in moss. A crack ran along its upper section. The surrounding plaza was completely silent.
Robert studied it for a moment. Then he spoke to the system.
"System, analyze the monument."
The response came quickly.
Object: Ancient Monument. Estimated Age: greater than 3,000 Years. Heavily damaged. Function Unknown. Recommendation: Perform Physical Examination.
Three thousand years old.
Robert did not say that out loud. He simply walked forward. The others followed.
Up close, the monument was bigger than it looked from the road junction.
It stood roughly four meters tall and was wider at the base than at the top. The moss covering its surface was thick and continuous, built up over centuries in a valley that received very little direct sunlight. Looking at the surface alone told them almost nothing.
Sai moved to the monument's nearest face and began pressing his fingertips against the moss without removing it. He did not look with his eyes. He was reading the surface through touch, searching for texture differences and carved lines hidden beneath the growth.
Eissa moved to the eastern face and stopped after a few meters.
She called the others over quietly.
The lines she had found were not cracks. Cracks in the old stone were irregular. They branched. They varied in width. These lines did none of those things. They ran straight, then curved, then turned at precise angles and connected to other lines. The pattern repeated across the entire surface in a way that was clearly intentional.
The more they looked, the more of it appeared. It was not decoration. It was a formation—carved into the stone itself and hidden under centuries of moss growth.
Ronan had walked around the back of the monument. He was quiet longer than expected. When he came back, he pointed behind him and said there were pillars.
Four of them. Evenly spaced. Each one broken at roughly the same height, their upper sections lying in the debris around their bases. He crouched beside the nearest and pointed to a circular carved socket at its broken top. Then he pointed to identical sockets on the monument's rear face.
The sockets matched perfectly.
Robert looked at the broken pillars and then at the monument.
"System, are the monument and these pillars connected?"
Confirmed. Formation Status: Incomplete.
The formation had originally stretched from the monument outward through all four pillars. Three thousand years, and whatever had caused the settlement's abandonment had left it broken and incomplete.
Sai had found a section near the monument's base where the moss had grown thinner than the rest. He crouched in front of it and looked carefully without touching. Most of the carving underneath had eroded too much to read. But several characters had been cut deeper than the others. Those had survived.
He read them out loud, keeping his voice low.
Moon Gate. Guardian. Seal. Never Open.
Nobody spoke after he finished. The phrases sat in the air between them, and none of them had an explanation to offer.
Eissa had moved to the monument's base while Sai was reading. She cleared a small amount of debris from the ground along the monument's edge and looked at what was underneath.
The monument was not resting directly on the ground.
A gap ran along its entire base. It was uniform in width all around. The edges were clean and even. This was not the result of the stone settling or the ground shifting over time. Someone had built that gap intentionally.
Robert looked at it without crouching. The space beneath the monument was dark. He could not see how far down it went.
"System, is there a structure beneath the monument?"
Confirmed. Depth: Unknown. Size: Unknown. Recommendation: Continue Investigation.
He stood up and looked at the plaza differently than he had a moment before.
The monument was not simply a marker or a memorial. It was sitting on top of something.
They spread out across the surrounding plaza and began searching.
Sai worked through the debris near the broken pillars. He found formation stones—worked pieces of rock shaped to carry carved channels, the kind used to direct energy flow between the components of a large formation. Most were cracked. None were intact.
Ronan found jade fragments near the monument's northern face. Jade used in cultivation formations usually retained some internal quality long after its active energy was gone. These pieces had nothing left in them at all. Whatever formation they had powered had used every last amount of energy they contained.
Eissa found pieces of dark metal along a collapsed section of the plaza's edge. The metal was dense and showed no signs of rust or surface damage despite its obvious age. The break edges matched each other closely enough to confirm that these pieces had once been connected as part of a single object. She recognised the material. It matched the broken chain fragments found earlier near the caravan evidence.
Robert moved between each discovery without commenting on any one of them. He was reading the overall pattern—where the formation stones had come to rest, where the jade fragments were concentrated, and where the metal pieces lay in relation to the pillars. He was building a picture of how the formation had originally been arranged.
After a while, Sai stood and spoke quietly.
He said he did not think the settlement had been built because people chose this valley to live in. He thought the settlement had been built because something already existed beneath the ground here, and someone had decided that the ground needed to be guarded. The buildings, the roads, the watchtowers, the cultivation practice grounds — all of it looked less like a community that had grown naturally and more like long-term infrastructure built around a single specific purpose. The formation was not part of the settlement. The settlement was built around the formation.
Robert said nothing in response.
He directed the question inward.
"System, what cultivation realm created this formation?"
Authority Insufficient. Minimum Analysis Requirement: Above Sky Vein Realm. Current Authority: Insufficient.
He read the response once.
The system had never said that before. It had told him many times that it lacked information. It had never told him that it lacked the authority to analyse something. The formation they were standing inside was not simply obscure or ancient. It operated at a level the system itself could not evaluate.
None of them spoke.
The meaning was clear enough without any explanation.
The pulse came without warning.
It was not loud. It did not cause any visible damage. It was a single wave of pressure that passed through the ground beneath their feet and was gone in less than a second. The only visible effects were small. The moss on the monument trembled once and then went still. Dust fell from the top of the nearest broken pillar and settled onto the ground below. Then everything was exactly as it had been before.
Robert did not move.
"System, did the pulse originate beneath the monument?"
Confirmed. Source: Below Current Location. Cause: Unknown. Recommendation: Do Not Disturb Formation.
He looked at the monument.
The pulse had not happened because of anything the group had done. They had not touched the monument or the formation stones before it occurred. It had happened on its own. Whatever was beneath the settlement was not simply sitting there dormant. It was still doing something. After three thousand years, it was still active.
Robert stood quietly in front of the monument and thought about everything they had found.
The settlement had been built more than three thousand years ago. It had been organised entirely around protecting whatever lay beneath this plaza. The formation covering the monument and connecting the four pillars had required a cultivation level above the Sky Vein Realm to create—a level the system could not analyse. The inscription carved deepest into the monument said never open. And the thing beneath them was still producing pulses on its own, independent of anything happening on the surface above it.
He had come west following a system mission about a city abandoned three hundred years ago.
That city was not the actual mystery.
It was just the most recent thing standing in front of the actual mystery.
The system updated quietly at the edge of his vision.
Investigation Progress: 40%
Robert looked at the monument for a moment longer. The moss had settled. The plaza was silent. The valley around them held the particular quiet of somewhere that had been waiting patiently for a very long time.
He turned to the others and told them to leave everything exactly as they had found it.
Nobody disagreed.
