Chapter 213 213: The Road West (Part 2)
The Osborn Clan was already awake before sunrise.
The morning felt different from the usual mornings, though nothing about the clan's physical appearance had changed overnight. The cultivation hall stood where it always stood.
The Training Arena was quiet at this early hour. The Spirit Herb Garden held its careful rows in the grey pre-dawn light. But the atmosphere carried something additional, a particular awareness that moved through the clan's daily population without anyone needing to announce it.
Word had spread the previous evening that Robert, Sai, Ronan, and Eissa would be leaving at first light, and by the time the sun began showing at the horizon's edge, a quiet gathering had formed near the main gate without anyone organizing it.
The clan members who stood there did not make a ceremony of it. They simply came. Some were cultivators who had joined in the past six months, drawn by the clan's growing reputation. Others had been present since the early days, long enough to remember when the training yard had been mostly empty and the southern construction site had been open ground.
They stood without crowding the gate, at a respectful distance, and the atmosphere they created was supportive rather than sorrowful. The clan understood that this journey was not a retreat or an emergency. It was the next step of something that had been moving forward since the day Robert Osborn had decided the family name deserved more than it had been given.
John and Mary arrived while the group was making its final checks.
John stood next to his son for a moment, taking in the view of the road beyond the gate without saying a word. When he finally broke the silence, he kept his words straightforward.
He remarked that the clan could thrive without Robert needing to supervise every single day. The systems were functioning well, and the surrounding leadership was prepared. His role was not to stress about what he had established while he was away; it was to return even stronger. He conveyed this in his usual calm tone, without any expectation of a reply.
Mary was less brief, though she was equally calm. She offered practical advice rather than emotional appeals, which was exactly what the group needed from her at that moment. She reminded them to travel carefully through unfamiliar territories.
She reminded them that not every problem encountered on a long road needed to be resolved with strength. She said that patience and observation had served Robert well inside Magical City, and they would serve him equally well in the larger world if he allowed them to.
Then she turned briefly to Eissa, saying something quiet that the others could not hear, and Eissa listened with the focused attentiveness she brought to things that mattered to her. Whatever was said between them, Eissa's posture was slightly more settled after it than before.
Sai received three final reports from network members while these farewells were happening, reading through each one efficiently and adding a few notes before tucking them away.
He had already arranged contact points along the western route, small threads of the network extending into territories it had not covered before, enough to provide some foundation for information gathering during the journey.
Ronan had been all set since the night before, and you could see his excitement bubbling over. He was already focused on the road ahead, standing like someone who had been waiting forever for a journey that just could not start soon enough.
Eissa held her excitement more carefully than Ronan did, though it was visible to anyone paying attention. She stood composed and alert, her travel pack organized with the thoroughness that had become characteristic of her over the past year.
Shortly after sunrise, the four of them walked through the main gate.
Robert did not look back immediately.
He walked forward at a steady pace and let the clan gate close behind them naturally, listening to the sound of it without making a moment out of it. When he did look back, a minute down the road, the compound walls were still clearly visible, the rooflines of the newer buildings rising above them.
Magical City's outer districts fell behind them gradually. The city did not disappear all at immediately. It faded by degrees, its market noise softening, its buildings becoming smaller against the horizon, its lanterns losing their distinctness until they became a general glow behind the group rather than individual points of light.
Robert watched it go without regret.
What he felt instead was something he had not experienced in a long time. Genuine curiosity about what existed on the other side of the things he already knew. The road ahead was unfamiliar, and for the first time in more than he could easily remember, "unfamiliar" felt like an opportunity rather than a threat.
The landscape changed gradually as they traveled west.
The dense settlement patterns around Magical City thinned within the first day, giving way to stretches of open road lined by smaller villages and farming settlements.
The terrain grew hillier by the second day; the flat ground around the city was replaced by rolling country that gave the road a gentle rise and fall across every few kilometers. Forests appeared on either side at intervals, different in character from the Magical Forbidden Forest, less dense and more varied in the kinds of trees that composed them.
Trading roads branched off from the main western route regularly, each one leading somewhere the group had no reason to go yet.
Merchant caravans appeared with some frequency, moving in both directions, their leaders and drivers nodding to passing travelers with the easy familiarity of people who spent their lives on these roads and had long since stopped finding strangers remarkable.
Independent cultivators passed through as well, traveling alone or in small groups, each one carrying the particular self-contained awareness of someone navigating a wide world on their own terms.
At the settlements where they stopped to rest each evening, Sai gathered information with the quiet efficiency he applied to every information task. He spoke with innkeepers, merchants passing through, and the occasional local cultivator willing to share what they knew about the road ahead.
Most of the people he spoke with had never heard the name Osborn Clan. Some had never heard of Magical City except as a general directional reference. A few were not certain where Celestial Brook City was.
