Chapter 144 144: Foundation Beneath Stone (Part-1)
Morning settled over the Osborn compound without ceremony. The sky was still pale when Robert stepped out into the courtyard, the air cool and slightly damp. For a few seconds, he stood still, simply observing. The clan moved differently now.
It was not obvious to someone who did not know them. Training drills still followed the same patterns. Spears rose and fell. Footwork traced worn paths across stone. But there was something altered in the rhythm. Less wasted motion. Fewer careless gestures. Even the younger disciples, who once joked between repetitions, kept their focus longer before their discipline slipped.
Ronan crossed the yard carrying a training spear. His stride had changed since the forest. Not heavier. Not arrogant. Just measured. He placed each step as if aware of what might lie beneath it.
Sarah adjusted the bandage on her forearm and resumed blade drills without being told. Taylen moved more carefully through transitions, his usual bursts of speed replaced by cleaner execution. Sai stood at the edge of the formation, watching rather than speaking.
They had seen real killing. It left a mark. Robert walked along the shaded side of the compound toward the rear structures. Construction had not stopped while they were gone. If anything, it had accelerated.
Four days earlier, the Battle Experience Array had been a hidden disc beneath a council chamber floor. Now, a new underground training chamber was taking shape beneath an unused storage hall. Workers moved the stone quietly. No announcements. Just layered reinforcement and sealed entrances where the cultivator will not notice them.
The entrance was concealed beneath what appeared to be an ordinary equipment room. Only those who had issued clan tokens could descend into the lower chamber. Even then, entry required recorded points earned through duty or merit.
The system of clan points had already begun changing behaviour. Members volunteered for guard rotations without complaint. They tracked supply counts more accurately. They sparred harder each time to improve their skills.
Because the array was no longer a rumour, it was a privilege. Robert descended the narrow steps into the partially completed chamber. The air below was cooler. Faint lines of qi traced across etched stone where the Battle Experience Array had been anchored permanently.
Two elders were inside, rotating five-minute sessions. One emerged pale and sweating, jaw tight. He bowed briefly to the other before stepping aside to recover.
No boasting. No dramatics. Robert watched for a moment, then turned back toward the surface. The array was powerful. But it consumed spirit stones steadily. Already, the clan's stockpile had dipped noticeably. Growth demanded spirit stone.
He returned to his room and sealed the door. The system interface opened at a thought.
System Points: 300,000.
He did not linger over weapons or pills. He went directly to the resource infrastructure column. Is there a sustainable source of spirit stones?
The response came almost immediately.
Low-Grade Spirit Stone Vein – Constructable
Mid-Grade Spirit Stone Vein – Constructable
Detailed descriptions followed. Artificial veins generated through energy compression and terrain stabilisation. Require high qi concentration. Permanent installation. Daily output is scalable. Hidden construction is possible.
Robert reviewed the cost.
Low-Grade Vein – 120,000 points.
Mid-Grade Vein – 180,000 points.
Total: 300,000.
He exhaled slowly. Zero again. No emergency reserve. No sudden purchases. No cushion. He leaned back slightly, considering. The Walker Clan would not remain idle forever. Infrastructure was slower than blades, but far more decisive. If the Osborn Clan could sustain long-term cultivation without relying on external trade, their leverage shifted.
Spirit stones meant: Array operation without rationing. Elder can break through without delay. Younger generation acceleration in there culivation. It also meant independence. He confirmed the purchase. The system balance dropped to zero.
There was no fanfare. Only a quiet notification that blueprints had been unlocked and placement required terrain mapping. Robert opened the territorial projection of Osborn lands.
The clan compound was not vast, but it was old. Beneath it lay layers of forgotten storage chambers and abandoned reinforcement tunnels. He adjusted the overlay to detect qi density.
Two zones pulsed faintly. One was too close to surface structures.
The other lay deeper beneath an old stone foundation once used for grain storage decades ago.
Natural rock reinforcement. Limited external access. Structurally, it is stable and ideal for the spirit stone cave. He designated the coordinates. Construction would occur underground, with minimal surface disruption. The system would convert ambient qi and reinforce the subterranean structure in two hours, and the system timing of the construction.
No noise. No visible excavation. He waited. The ground did not tremble. No light burst from beneath the compound. Only a subtle shift in the qi flow around him, as if something beneath the earth had begun breathing. By afternoon, the system confirmed stabilisation.
Low-grade outer vein established. Mid-grade inner core stable. Robert did not rush to inspect alone. He went to his father. John Osborn was reviewing supply records when Robert entered.
You are early, John said without looking up. I need to show you something. John set the brush aside and studied his son's expression. No urgency. Not excitement. Something steadier.
They walked to the rear storage hall and descended through the concealed stairwell. The air grew cooler the deeper they went. At the lowest chamber, Robert pushed aside the newly placed stone barrier. Beyond it, embedded within natural rock, faint crystalline veins glowed.
Not bright.
But unmistakable. John stepped forward slowly. He reached out and touched one of the embedded stones. It hummed faintly with contained qi.
His hand remained there longer than necessary. We surveyed this territory for decades, he said quietly. Robert nodded. Qi flow shifted recently, he replied. The change revealed something hidden.
It was not a lie. Not entirely. John walked deeper into the chamber. The low-grade vein traced along the outer wall, producing raw stones that could be extracted without destabilising the structure. Deeper inside, the mid-grade deposits glowed more intensely, compact and concentrated. This is not a surface discovery, John said.
No. John turned slowly. This changes our lives and daily cultivation. Robert did not answer immediately. With this, arrays will not pause for rationing. Elder cultivation cycles can run uninterrupted. The younger disciples can train without waiting for monthly allocations.
John's gaze sharpened slightly. And trade dependence reduces. Yes. Silence filled the chamber. Not heavy. Not stunned. Just a calculation. We seal this completely, John said. Only elders and designated extraction teams know of it.
Agreed. Extraction will be gradual. No flooding the market. Agreed. John studied the glowing stone once more. The Walker Clan will notice eventually that something has shifted or someone is helping them in their growth, he said.
They already suspect something. John nodded faintly. Good. Let them suspect. They ascended back toward the surface. Above ground, training continued. The clang of practice weapons echoed across the yard. Robert paused at the top of the staircase.
Below them, a steady source of strength had taken root. Not flashy. Not immediate. But enduring. Ronan crossed the courtyard again, this time correcting a younger disciple's grip. Sai adjusted spacing during a formation drill. Sarah moved with greater restraint than before. Taylen listened instead of interrupting.
The forest had hardened them. The vein would sustain them. Robert felt the quiet alignment of effort and foundation settling into place. This was not the strength of one man dominating a battlefield.
This was the slow construction of a clan that could survive repeated storms. As evening approached, lanterns lit along the compound walls. Beneath the ground, spirit stones pulsed softly in darkness.
Far beyond the city, somewhere in the Walker Clan hall, calculations were likely unfolding. Robert did not need to see it to know. Conflict would come again.
But when it did, Osborn would not fight from scarcity. He turned from the stairwell and walked back into the yard, where discipline had already replaced doubt.
Above ground, they trained. Below ground, they endured. And this time, the foundation would not crumble easily.
