Retired S-rank father becomes a teacher

Chapter 23. Evelyn Everheart. Eve POV.

25 years ago, one year before the mana awakening when Eve was fifteen years old.

The sun shone brightly through the window that was just above the shower and the steam of the hot water rising up as I stepped out. My bare feet feeling the cool tiles.

Grabbing the towel on the rack, I started to dry myself, from head to toe. A mirror reflected my image back at me. That image wasn’t the same as the one in my fantasies. My breasts were small and flat, barely more than little mounds; my hips didn’t have enough curve. But those things could grow with time. No, what bothered me was that hollowed face, the fact that my ribs were visible under my skin.

I sighed.

Makeup would help cover up that face, making it look fuller but even with that the thin arms and legs stayed. After finishing with my drying routine and brushing out my long blonde hair, and of course the makeup, I dressed in the usual white blouse and short skirt that was part of the school uniform.

Checking myself in the mirror once more and decided it was as good as it gets, I went down for breakfast. The mansion was big, with many maids cleaning the floors and butlers standing around, ready to serve me, anything but what I really needed.

My mother, was seated at the end of the dining table, a newspaper in her hands, reading about the news, while her coffee was untouched next to her. The aroma of the fresh beans mixed with the scent of bacon, making me salivate. My stomach growled. She heard it.

Looking up from the newspaper, she gave me a stern look with her hazel eyes and spoke, her voice sharp as always.

“That is not very lady-like, Eve. You should control yourself better.”

I flinched. No matter how old I got, my mother’s voice never stopped scaring me: it was like it cut my skin and left it bleeding. But she was a kind mother, very loving. It was me, I was a disappointment.

“Mom!”

My sister, Linda, walked down the grand stairs with her long brown hair, a wide smile on her lips, full lips and an even fuller figure. No hollow cheeks. A goddess walking among mere mortals, like me. She kissed mom on the cheek and grabbed some bacon from a platter.

Saliva filled my mouth.

She noticed my stare and she grinned. “Mom Evelyn is thinking of eating again.”

I looked away quickly, hiding the flush of embarrassment from my mother and sister because it was my own fault; I didn’t earn the right to eat. My grades were slipping, my body was wasting away, I was a failure. Only by working harder could I get food.

“Evelyn, how many times do I need to tell you in this household you eat once you get straight A’s. Understood?” my mother explained to me, her eyes never leaving the newspaper.

I’m sorry Mom. I’ll do better.

But the words never left my throat, they stayed buried and all I could do was nod. As my sister sat next to me and ate her breakfast, I thought of my fantasy, my diary where I could escape.

“Oh yeah mom, did you read Evelyn's newest entry?” Linda said, her mouth full of bacon.

My heart raced, causing me to sweat, my breathing got heavy. There was no way she read it; mom didn’t care about my childish things, she said so herself.

Yet my mother put the paper down, folded her hands under her chin.

“No I haven’t yet what’s in it?” She tilted her head.

Linda giggled, that sweet sound that boys would do anything for. “She wrote about her crush again. A boy with purple eyes.”

My face was on fire. I clenched my fists in my lap, trying to hold back my emotions. My mom looked amused, she had this little smile on her lips that I despised.

“That was the Vane boy right? The one with the girlfriend? Oh what’s her name again? Beth? Liz?”

E-Liz-A-Beth. Her name was Elizabeth and she was perfect, someone I could never compete against.

My mom snapped her finger, “I remember, Elizabeth. So this crush of yours has a girlfriend. Why do you keep writing about him? Are you stupid?” She laughed and Linda laughed with her, the two most beautiful women of this household made fun of me and it was justified.

I didn’t know how to answer. Why did I do it? He was just... he talked to me and looked at me without that disgusted face like everyone else.

“Who knows what goes on in her head,” Linda said and I wanted to die on the spot. I quickly got up from the table and excused myself. The sound of their laughter followed me as I grabbed my backpack from the sofa. It was time to leave. School.

My head hung low as I walked out of the front door and my chauffeur, Mr. Gonzales opened the door of the black luxury car for me, he was a nice old man with white hair and a kind smile.

I took out my phone and put in my headphones, music filling my ears. The school wasn’t too far, a 15 minute drive through the busy streets of the city but that was enough time to mentally go over the answer I wrote on yesterday exam’s. I was sure I didn’t make a mistake in the calculations so I should get an A+ which meant... I could eat. That thought made me excited.

When I arrived at school, the sun was still rising, painting the sky in a pink color. Students were already walking towards the main building, chatting away.

I ignored them and walked towards my locker. A couple of the jocks looked at me, not in the way a girl wants to be looked at but more like they are deciding whether they would even fuck me for a million dollars. Then they lost interest and continued their conversation about some hot girl with big boobs.

Yeah. Yeah. It was nothing new to me.

Putting my things in my locker and grabbing what I needed for first period, I closed it. And that was when he came out of the boy’s bathroom.

Silas.

His raven hair was messy, his white shirt untucked from his pants. I held my breath. We usually said hello to each other, I would greet him and then my day would be perfect, nothing else mattered, just seeing his purple eyes, those beautiful purple eyes.

“Hi Silas.”

My voice was low but still audible as I passed the baton to him. His turn.

He looked at me with a blank expression before walking past. Not even a word.

What?

My heart stopped beating for a second, then the pain came, it felt like a knife twisting inside my chest. Why? Why did he ignore me?

Maybe he didn’t hear. Yeah that had to be it. He was in the bathroom after all maybe he had headphones in his ears.

I rushed to his side, calling him again, this time a lot louder, “Silas!”

He didn’t stop. Just every other person in the hallway turned to look at the freak that was making a fool out of herself.

My breathing became faster. The feeling of wanting to cry made my eyes water. But I didn’t. I couldn’t cry, my mother said it would ruin my face.
