Retired S-rank father becomes a teacher

Chapter 16.9. S-ranked Taxi.

Silas Vane, the strongest S-ranker, a man who fought earth-ending monsters in S-rank dungeons, was being used as a taxi. By his own daughter of course. The moment Hailey posted that picture of them in Toyko at Nekoramencon, a series of messages bombarded his phone.

Kathy demanded a ride to her favorite ward in Tokyo. She went so far as to threaten to call him ‘second best dad’ if he didn’t comply.

And like the good father he was, he agreed. So now, he was walking with her in Akihabara, the capital of anime and otaku culture. Not even a dungeon appearing in the middle of the block and killing thousands of people could have destroyed this district. Kathy said it was a testament to the power of anime. Silas just thought people were crazy.

“Kat, what is it you want to do here?”

The streets were crowded, with people of all ages dressed in cosplay or holding shopping bags. Signs advertised various stores and attractions in loud colors and fonts. The air was filled with sounds of music, laughter and the occasional scream from a nearby arcade. It was a vibrant and chaotic scene that made Silas feel old.

Kat scoffed, “You can leave. It’s not like I want you to stay.”

He rolled his eyes. Of course she would say that.

“I thought you invited me for a date,” he teased, putting his arm around her shoulders.

She shook him off with an annoyed glare. “Don’t touch me, perv. I just need a ride there and back. You can go to the nearest pub and get wasted. I don’t care.”

“Ouch, Kat you hurt your poor old dad.”

Rolling her eyes again, she turned away, walking towards a shop with a big sign that read “Anime Galaxy”. The logo looked familiar. He followed her inside.

The shop was spacious, with rows and rows of manga, DVD, figurines and other merchandise. The ceiling was covered with posters of various shows and games.

But that wasn’t the only thing that caught his attention. A magical object was being sold at the counter. A wand. He could feel its enchantment and mana signature.

Kat stopped dead in her tracks. He bumped into her, his chest against her back.

“Kathy what is it?”

She didn’t answer. She stood frozen, staring at the wand like it was a holy relic.

Then she ran towards it. Her face pressed against the glass display case that held it, her eyes wide and sparkling. People were staring at her but she didn’t care.

Silas walked over to her, curious. The wand was black and silver, with intricate designs etched along its length. To him it was a wand. To Katherine it must be something more.

She was drooling. Like actually drooling.

“Excuse me, is this for sale?” She asked the shop clerk. A girl around her age, with a pink wig.

The girl shook her head apologetically, “Sorry, but that is the prototype of the Wand of Darknights. It is the only one in existence and we can not sell it. It’s a collector’s item.”

Kat pouted, her eyes still glued to the wand.

“Dad steal it for me,” she said, without looking away.

The clerk’s hand moved to reach for the phone.

He chuckled, and told the clerk to calm down, she was joking of course. Pulling—prying—Kathy away from the glass was harder than removing grease stains.

As he dragged her towards the manga section he spoke, “Why do you want that thing?”

She pulled out her phone, tapping on the screen before showing him a video. It was a trailer of the show called “The Darknights” where a group of magical girls fought demons with flashy powers and sparkly wands.

Of course his daughter was a fan.

The wand was part of the main character's weapon and apparently this wand could perform some actual dark magic spells, according to the rumors online. Silas didn’t care about it.

“Do you want to use dark magic? You could have just asked me. I can get a few magic items that are much better than that toy.” He patted her head, messing her hair.

She smacked his hand. “No! I want the original wand. It has sentimental value and it’s limited edition.”

He sighed, looking around the shop. The other customers were minding their own business, but he could feel a few pairs of eyes watching them. Probably recognizing him or his daughter.

They went to browse some manga. Kat was picking out some volumes of her favorite series and putting them in a basket, making extra sure to ignore her dad. Her way of punishing him. Cute.

“Do you have any new releases that are not trash?” she asked the clerk who was following them. A saleswoman to the core or just making sure they weren’t going to steal? Both probably.

She nodded, “We have a shipment coming tomorrow. There is this new shoujo manga that is really popular with high school girls. It’s about a boy who can transform into a cat.”

The two girls started to chat about it.

Silas tuned them out. He focused on the wand again. Stealing it would be easy, but then the Japanese branch of the Hunter Association would be on his ass. Breaking into a dungeon was okay, no one got hurt but a B-rank monster. Stealing was meiwaku. Something the Japanese S-ranker, Tetsuya, did not like. That man was annoying. A stuck up sword nut.

Katherine tugged on his sleeve, breaking his train of thoughts. She held out her hand.

“Your card old man,” she said with a cheeky smile.

“I’m not old. I’m in my prime.” He handed her his wallet, which she opened and took out his black card.

They went to the cashier and the pink-haired girl scanned all the items, bagging them up. The total was...a lot. At least he assumed so since the numbers were in yen.

Kat happily paid for her stuff with his card and gave him a mock salute. She then dragged him out of the shop.

“Thanks for nothing old-timer. Now drop these off at home. I’ll call you when I need a ride back,” she said, putting her earphones in and walking away without looking back.

Silas shook his head, but his lips twitched. He teleported the bags home and followed her. Of course he would stay close by. When she looked behind and saw he was still there, she flipped him off. The people around them stared but he couldn’t care less.

He sat on a nearby bench, watching his daughter as she went from shop to shop, browsing the displays with a grin on her face. He decided to buy a candy bar from a vending machine and munch on it.

After munching, he threw it at the bin, basketball style but missed. The people walking past him gave him dirty looks. Just as he was about to teleport the trash into the bin, a sword suddenly pierced the ground where it fell, impaling it. He turned his head and saw a man with a sharp face and a stern expression.

Tetsuya Nakamura, the S-ranker of Japan.

“Littering in Japan is punishable by death.” Tetsuya spoke in a deep voice, his eyes glaring daggers at him.

Silas snorted, “I think that’s against international laws.”

Tetsuya smirked, a thin smirk and pulled his sword out of the ground.

“You know the rules of my land, Vane-san,” He said as he sheathed it.

Silas stood up. Time to have a chat with this man. “You didn’t come here to lecture me on littering Tetsuya. What is it? The dungeon break at Nagasaki?” he asked.

The man tilted his head, “You broke into one of my dungeons?”

He nodded.

Tetsuya closed his eyes, a vein popping on his forehead when he opened them he looked much more composed.

“Littering, trespassing and what else did you do on your visit? Should I check the security cams?” he threatened, his voice still calm but with an undertone of anger.

Silas laughed. It was always so easy to piss Tetsuya off. The guy took everything too seriously.

“Chill man. I’m here as a father not as a hunter. I haven’t broken any of your precious rules.” He leaned against the bench, folding his arms.

Scanning the crowd, Tetsuya spotted Kat coming out of a shop, coming towards them. He raised his hand to her and she waved back, bowing slightly.

“Tetsuya-san! Long time no see. How have you been?” she greeted, giving him a smile.

He returned the smile, bowing deeper to show respect.

“I’m fine, Katherine-chan. Just keeping the peace in my country as always. You’ve grown taller,” he complimented her.

Kat laughed and looked at Silas with a smug look, as if saying ‘you should take notes’.

He glared back. Is she going to make him kill Tetsuya? It would make for a good workout.

“So are you here to arrest my dad or something?” Katherine asked.

Tetsuya coughed into his hand. “Well, yes. He did break into a sealed dungeon and threaten judges at the ramen competition... But I will let it slide since he’s your father and I pity you for having such a man as your dad. But I expect you to keep an eye on him.”

He shot Silas a pointed look.

Silas gave him the finger, a masterful bird. He was the one who taught Kat how to flip people off.

Katherine nodded, “Don’t worry, I will. I know he can be...annoying. I won’t let him do anything illegal.”

What a girl. A moment ago she asked him to steal for her.

Tetsuya looked satisfied. He said his farewells and walked away, disappearing in the crowd.

Silas waited for a few seconds then teleported Kat in front of him, startling her.

“Hey! What’s the big idea, you old geezer?!” She complained, trying to push him away.

Old geezer. That went too far.

“I think you owe me an apology for calling me annoying in front of a rival. It hurts my pride as a father.”

She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. She was not going to apologize, so she changed the subject.

“Well if you’re such a great dad, then prove it. Get me the wand from that shop.”

Music to his ears. He knew how she thought.

“Ah ah ah~ what happened to not doing anything illegal?” He mocked her, mirroring her pose.

She bit her lip and looked away, the neon glow of the surrounding Akihabara shops casting colorful reflections across her face as she mumbled something under her breath. It sounded like ‘stupid dad’.

Sighing he grabbed her hand and pulled her close, so he could kiss her forehead.

“Alright, Kat. But we’re going to have a proper father-daughter bonding time. Deal?” he said, rubbing her twin-tails.

She nodded, her lips pressing together to hide a faint smile.
