Retired S-rank father becomes a teacher

Chapter 9. Everhearts and their water.

A highway stretched out before him, cars rushing by with an impatient honks and whines. They all blended in together into one big, obnoxious sound. Silas appeared on top of a nearby billboard, his eyes scanning one particular car.

He easily picked out his daughters. It was the only one with two girls inside and a pink cover on the backseat. The rest of the cars? They were driven by random guys in suits and women yelling on their phones, probably fighting about money or their cheating spouses. Typical human stuff.

But not the Vane girls.

They drove in silence. Kathy had the wheel, her knuckles white from gripping too tightly. She still wasn’t used to manual cars. In the passenger seat, Victoria sat like a queen, her hands folded in her lap.

Following them through the streets of the city wasn’t difficult. Silas kept a distance. No one noticed a man casually sitting on top of a lamppost or a building. If they did they would just think he was an illusion for an ad or something.

Katherine drove to a parking lot. She parked haphazardly, nearly bumping into the car next to them. Silas made a mental note to teach her how to drive better later. Maybe with a race. That would be fun.

They stepped out of the car. The faint smell of street food was everywhere, mixed with the occasional stench of a sewer grate. People passed by, each one in a rush.

Victoria scanned the area before pointing at a café down the street. The two girls began walking in that direction, their heads close together as they chatted about school and friends. Silas eavesdropped carefully, making sure nothing suspicious was going on. They could be getting scammed by some punk out here.

A group of boys passed by. One of them glanced at the twins and whistled. His red spiky hair was like a traffic cone and his voice grated on Silas’s ears. The boy was about to call out to them when he suddenly tripped on something invisible and landed face-first into a puddle of muddy water.

Kathy didn’t even notice, but Vic hid her smirk behind a delicate cough. The boy cursed and his friends laughed, not realizing that the thing he tripped on was Silas’s spatial distortion.

Once inside the cafe, the girls found a small table by the window. A cute waitress took their orders, both ordering a latte and some cake. Where were their friends? Did they lie?

Silas waited, keeping himself invisible to the crowd outside. His daughters seemed to be on a date with each other. Not a bad idea. It meant no boys around.

Then a presence, heavy and strong, made itself known from the parking lot. It bore down like a hammer on an anvil. S-rank. No doubt. Then a familair boy was walking towards the cafe and a woman, his mother, beside him.

Lucas Everheart, the target he was supposed to be investigating.

Dressed in a black jacket and jeans that looked too tight for him, Lucas strolled in as if he owned the place. His mother was a striking woman, with long blonde hair and sharp red nails. Her suit showed no cleavage. She was the S-ranker.

Their eyes met. She saw through his spatial distortion. A flicker of surprise flashed across her face before a smile spread across her red lips. She bid her son a quick goodbye, giving him a kiss on the forehead before walking towards Silas.

To other people it’d be like she walked up to an empty bench and talked to herself.

“Silas Vane. What are you doing hiding behind magic like a child?” she asked, her voice like silk.

He dropped the invisibility, leaning back with an easy grin.

“Eve. Long time no see.”

Eve raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Well you look... domesticated. I never thought I’d see the day when you played the part of a stalker.”

He chuckled. Eve Everheart. A name that sent shivers down many hunters’ spines.

“I never expected you to marry and have a kid, Eve.” He glanced back at Lucas who was now sitting with the twins, Kathy with a tight expression and Vic smiling.

His eye twitched. Why was Lucas sitting with his daughters? Was this some kind of sick joke?

Eve followed his gaze and let out a soft laugh.

“Please don’t tell me that your daughters are there and that’s why you’re skulking about like a creeper. I won’t believe it.”

His attention snapped back to her, his smile still in place but his eyes cold.

“Believe what you want. The fact remains that my daughters are sitting with your son and I don’t like it one bit.” He stepped closer to Eve, his height making her crane her neck to look up at him.

She narrowed her eyes, a dangerous glint in them. Her short stature meant little when it came to a fight.

“They are young Silas. Let them be. My Lucas is a good boy, he won’t hurt them.”

A low growl escaped his throat. The mana around them crackle as his power began to leak. But Eve didn’t back down. Instead, she bumped his chest with hers.

“Ah, I love space magic. It reminds me of the good old days when we would hunt together.”

She stepped into his personal space. Her water magic licked the air around them, forming little droplets around his neck, a subtle threat. This woman grew stronger while he was away. Interesting. If they fought who would come out on top?

He would. Definitely him.

With a grin, Silas placed his hand on her cheek. “I wouldn’t mind sparring again. But not today, Eve. Today is about our children.” His tone dropped, low.

Eve closed her eyes and leaned into his touch for a brief moment.

“What would your dear Liz say if she saw us like this?” she teased. He removed his hand.

They both turned their heads to watch the trio at the table. Lucas was talking, gesturing with his hands as he told some story that made Vic giggle, her cheeks did not turn pink. That was a good sign.

But Kathy did blush. He needed to intervene and end this little rendezvous.

With a flick of his wrist, he tried to manipulate space to transport the boy far away.

But he was engulfed in a ball of water. Immediately breaking out of it, he found himself on top of a skyscraper, antenna’s poking his ribs. He glared at Eve who appeared beside him, a smile on her face.

“Uh-uh. No teleporting my son. If he likes your girls then let them figure it out on their own.” She leaned against the railing, looking down at the café where their children sat.

He sighed. The Eve he remembered wasn’t so meddling but then again people change. For the worse it seemed. Killing her would cause a political shitstorm and he did not want his kids caught up in that.

The wind picked up, ruffling her blonde hair. She spoke softly.

“Remember when we were their age? It feels like ages ago.” She looked at him with a small smile, the kind that held a thousand memories.”You flirted with me, remember?”

A flutter in his heart reminded him. They were once the best of friends. Close enough that people thought they were a couple. It was before he and Elizabeth made it official.

He cleared his throat, pushing the memories back to where they belonged.

“We were dumb kids. Now I have my own family and you have yours. So let’s not get too nostalgic here, okay Eve?” He couldn’t afford to think about the past when his girls were still with Lucas.

Eve let out a laugh. She hummed a tune from an old song they used to listen to before the awakening. Silas’s stomach churned, his eyes not leaving his daughters.

Vic said something that made Lucas laugh and Kathy cracked a smile.

Damn it. They were getting along with him.

He was about to make his move, consequences be damned, when Eve spoke.

“I miss this. Hanging out with you. The thrill of being equals.” She walked around him, circling him as she talked. Her scent of cinnamon mixed with the salty breeze.

“Elizabeth is lucky to have you, but I envy her a little. You always had a soft spot for her even back then. Never fully committed to me, you heart breaker.”

He sighed.

“Eve. Enough of this nonsense. You are married and have a kid.” He looked at her sternly. “Focus on them. Not what could have been.”

She stopped in front of him, her expression softening. She pouted, the water droplets that surrounded them falling harmlessly like rain on concrete.

“I’m just messing with you, old friend. Don’t be so uptight.”

Her hand touched his chest for a brief second. She looked at her watch. It beeped. Red. A warning sign of danger.

“Duty calls.” She walked to the edge of the building before turning back to him. “Harm my son and I’ll kill you.” The smile was back.

Then she jumped and turned into water and shot towards the edge of the city.

His mind whirled. Eve was throwing a big wrench in his plans for Lucas, but there was no way he was going to let the boy get too close to his daughters. After this, the principal’s investigation became even more important, maybe he could take both mother and son down in one go.

Looking back at the café, he saw the trio laughing together. His fist clenched.

Time to take action, one thing he learned about the human body was that the bladder was very susceptible to gravity. A slight increase would make that boy piss himself in front of his daughters. That should embarrass him enough.

The trio walked outside the café and Silas took the chance. He increased the gravity around Lucas’s lower stomach and sure enough, seconds later he saw wetness spread down the front of his pants.

Bingo. The boy turned red and froze. He couldn’t say anything. He was standing there with piss all over himself while two beautiful girls watched.

Victoria’s eyes widened and she quickly looked away, hiding her amusement behind her hand. Katherine, on the other hand, couldn’t contain her disgust.

“Did you just...wet yourself?” she asked.

Lucas shook his head frantically, trying to come up with an excuse but nothing came out.

His humiliation was complete.

The twins left him standing there with wet pants and a broken ego as they made their way to their car and returned home. Silas followed them back to the mansion, a satisfied smirk on his face.
