Chapter 242: Killing for the First Time Without Feeling a Thing
Inside the Independent Space, Asuramaru opened the scrolls Hiruzen had given Naruto and carefully examined the ninjutsu sealed within.
There were quite a few useful techniques.
After looking through them, however, he quickly made his choice.
The Rasengan.
An A Rank ninjutsu created by Minato Namikaze.
Asuramaru extracted the relevant training method and presented it to Naruto.
"For now, focus on this."
Naruto accepted the scroll and looked over the technique written inside.
"Rasengan?"
"Yes."
Asuramaru folded his arms.
"Learn it first. We can worry about the others later."
Naruto nodded without hesitation.
"All right, Asuramaru!"
With that, another round of training began.
The next day, Naruto created a Shadow Clone and left it to practice the Rasengan.
His original body went with Kakashi, Sasuke, and Sakura to carry out missions.
Unfortunately, the missions assigned to fresh Genin were painfully mundane.
Finding lost pets.
Helping with farm work.
Running errands.
Cleaning.
Nothing that resembled the life of a Shinobi Naruto had imagined.
This continued until the third day.
Finally, Team 7 received a C Rank escort mission.
Outside the Hokage Building, their client waited with a bottle of alcohol in one hand.
He was an older man wearing round glasses, and judging from the smell around him, he had already been drinking.
Tazuna looked over Team 7.
His gaze passed across Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura.
Then his face twisted in disappointment.
"What's this?"
He took another drink.
"They're all just kids."
Tazuna looked toward Kakashi suspiciously.
"Are these brats really Shinobi?"
No one reacted much to the insult.
Sasuke looked bored.
Sakura frowned slightly.
Naruto remained calm.
Seeing that none of them took the bait, Tazuna finally introduced himself properly.
"My name is Tazuna."
He lifted his chin with drunken pride.
"I'm a famous bridge builder."
"I need you to protect me while I return to the Land of Waves and finish constructing my bridge."
Naruto nodded seriously.
"You can leave your safety to us."
Tazuna stared at him for a second before grunting.
Soon afterward, Team 7 departed.
For Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, this was the first time they had ever left Konoha on an official mission.
They followed a narrow road through the dense forest beyond the village.
Everything felt unfamiliar.
The trees seemed different.
The road stretched farther than any street in Konoha.
Even Sakura occasionally looked around with curiosity despite trying to appear composed.
Inside Naruto, Asuramaru was doing something entirely different.
He was trying to remember the original story.
Far too much time had passed since he had first transmigrated.
More than a century of experiences across several worlds had pushed many old memories into the back of his mind.
Still, he remembered the general outline of the Land of Waves arc.
There was a man named Gatō.
A wealthy businessman who controlled the Land of Waves through his shipping company.
Tazuna's bridge threatened that monopoly.
So Gatō had hired Shinobi to eliminate him.
And if Asuramaru remembered correctly...
The major enemy awaiting them should be Zabuza Momochi.
While Asuramaru was sorting through those memories, two hostile presences entered his Perception.
Weak.
Very weak.
But unmistakably murderous.
Asuramaru immediately warned Naruto.
"Enemies."
Naruto kept walking without changing his expression.
"Where?"
"Third tree on your right."
Naruto did not hesitate.
His hand entered his ninja tool pouch.
A three pronged Flying Thunder God Kunai appeared between his fingers.
Then he threw it.
Whoosh!
The kunai cut through the forest toward the tree Asuramaru had indicated.
The two concealed Shinobi immediately reacted.
They had been discovered.
One sprang from hiding, swinging a chain weapon toward Naruto.
The attack never reached him.
Naruto vanished.
Flying Thunder God.
He reappeared beside the marked kunai in a flash.
Before either enemy could recover, Naruto flicked his wrist and sent another marked kunai through the air.
His figure disappeared again.
Flash.
Metal clashed.
Flash.
A body fell.
Flash.
By the time Sasuke and Sakura understood what had happened, the fight was already over.
One of the attackers lay motionless on the ground.
Dead.
Naruto stood behind the remaining Shinobi.
A three pronged kunai rested against the man's body, perfectly positioned to end his life with a single movement.
Everything had happened in only a few breaths.
Sakura stared.
Sasuke's eyes narrowed.
Even Kakashi looked impressed.
Inside Naruto, the system notification rang through Asuramaru's mind.
[Ding! Intense negative emotions detected from a Hidden Mist rogue Chunin at the brink of death.]
[Gained 1,000 emotion points.]
[Gained 500 Demon Power.]
[Fifty percent of the obtained Demon Power will be returned to the Sword Master as feedback.]
The moment the notification ended, a subtle wave of power entered Naruto's body.
His muscles strengthened.
His chakra improved slightly.
Even his physical condition seemed to rise by a small degree.
Naruto noticed immediately.
"Asuramaru."
His eyes widened a little.
"My body just"
"Don't make a fuss."
Asuramaru interrupted him.
"This is one of my abilities."
Naruto listened.
"When you kill an enemy, I can take a portion of the power produced through that death and return it to you."
Naruto understood almost immediately.
"So killing enemies can make me stronger?"
"Yes."
Naruto showed no excitement at the idea.
Nor did he reject it.
He had no intention of slaughtering innocent people simply for strength.
But enemies who genuinely tried to kill him were another matter.
If someone came for his life, Naruto would not hesitate merely because killing them would stain his hands.
Kakashi walked over while lightly clapping.
"Good reaction."
Naruto looked toward him.
Kakashi examined the corpse first, then the captured Shinobi.
"I was planning to wait until they attacked so I could learn what they wanted."
His visible eye shifted toward Naruto.
"But this works too."
He crouched beside the surviving attacker and examined his forehead protector.
Hidden Mist.
A Chunin.
Kakashi's voice lost its laziness.
"You're from Kirigakure."
The captive remained silent.
Kakashi looked toward Tazuna.
"So your target was our client."
Tazuna stiffened.
Kakashi did not need a confession.
The situation was already obvious.
He stood and faced the bridge builder.
"Mr. Tazuna."
Tazuna swallowed.
"If Shinobi are being hired to assassinate you, then this mission is at least B Rank."
His gaze sharpened.
"The request submitted to Konoha only mentioned protecting you from ordinary criminals until the bridge was finished."
Kakashi paused.
"You deliberately concealed the danger."
Tazuna lowered his head.
"Was it because you couldn't afford the fee for a higher ranked mission?"
Tazuna said nothing.
Kakashi sighed.
"Either way, false information during a mission creates unnecessary risk for us."
His tone became very matter of fact.
"We have every right to terminate the mission and return to Konoha."
Tazuna's face changed.
He hurried forward.
"Wait!"
His drunken arrogance had vanished completely.
"I'm sorry."
"This is my fault."
He clenched his fists.
"I really couldn't afford the proper fee."
Tazuna looked at them desperately.
"But I didn't lie because I wanted to put you in danger."
"I'm doing this for the people of the Land of Waves."
Kakashi's expression did not soften.
"I'm sorry, but your circumstances have nothing to do with our mission."
Tazuna froze.
Beside them, Naruto looked down at the captured Hidden Mist Shinobi.
The man had already revealed everything his presence could tell them.
There was no longer any reason to keep him.
Naruto moved the kunai.
The three pronged weapon pierced the man's heart.
His body went rigid.
Then went still.
The system sounded again.
Another flow of Demon Power entered Naruto's body.
His strength increased slightly once more.
Naruto calmly withdrew the kunai and wiped away the blood.
There was no trembling in his hands.
No nausea.
No panic.
He had killed two people for the first time in his life.
Yet his mind remained completely steady.
They had come to kill him and his companions.
Naruto saw no reason to hesitate over enemies like that.
Instead, he turned toward Tazuna.
"Can you tell us exactly what's happening in the Land of Waves?"
Tazuna looked at Naruto.
Seeing that someone was willing to hear him out, he quickly nodded.
"It's because of Gatō."
Naruto listened closely.
"He owns a shipping company, but that's only his public face."
Tazuna's expression darkened.
"Behind the scenes, he uses hired thugs and Shinobi to control smuggling and other illegal businesses."
"The Land of Waves is an island nation."
"We depend heavily on maritime transportation."
"Once Gatō took control of the shipping routes, he effectively took control of our economy."
Tazuna clenched his jaw.
"The bridge I'm building would connect the Land of Waves directly to the mainland."
"If it's completed, Gatō loses his monopoly."
"That's why he wants me dead."
The situation was now clear.
Naruto wanted to help.
But he did not immediately decide for everyone.
He looked toward his teammates.
"I want to continue."
Then he added seriously,
"But your opinions matter more than mine alone."
Sasuke turned his head aside.
"Do whatever you want."
Coming from Sasuke, that was agreement.
Naruto looked toward Sakura.
Sakura hesitated, then turned toward Kakashi.
Kakashi noticed all three staring at him.
His visible eye curved with resignation.
"Fine."
"We'll continue."
Tazuna's face immediately brightened.
Kakashi raised one finger.
"But understand this."
"If the danger exceeds what I'm willing to accept for my team, the mission ends immediately."
Tazuna nodded repeatedly.
"Of course."
"Thank you!"
His attitude toward Team 7 had changed completely.
He looked particularly grateful toward Naruto, to the point that he seemed one step away from bowing all the way to the ground.
The group resumed their journey.
As they walked, Sasuke occasionally glanced toward Naruto.
So did Sakura.
Both were thinking about the same thing.
Naruto had just killed someone.
Two people, in fact.
And yet he looked completely normal.
There was no shock on his face.
No distraction in his steps.
Nothing.
Kakashi noticed as well.
He had seen many new Shinobi experience their first kill.
Some vomited.
Some shook uncontrollably.
Some could not sleep afterward.
Naruto displayed none of those reactions.
His mental resilience was far beyond what Kakashi expected from a twelve year old Genin.
Eventually, the group reached the coast.
Heavy fog covered the water.
They boarded a small boat and crossed quietly toward the Land of Waves.
The mist thickened as they approached the island, swallowing the surrounding landscape until the world seemed reduced to grey water and pale silhouettes.
Once ashore, Team 7 continued on foot.
They had not travelled far when Asuramaru's attention sharpened.
Another presence.
This one was different.
Far stronger than the previous two attackers.
Its chakra was dense and experienced.
Dangerous.
Asuramaru compared it with the strongest person nearby.
Roughly comparable to Kakashi.
He immediately knew who it was likely to be.
Zabuza Momochi.
At last.
A worthwhile opponent.
Asuramaru warned Naruto.
"Someone strong is approaching."
Naruto's steps stopped.
"Direction?"
"Front right."
Naruto immediately reached into his ninja tool pouch.
A three pronged Flying Thunder God Kunai appeared in his hand.
His relaxed expression disappeared.
"Everyone."
Kakashi looked toward him.
Naruto stared into the mist ahead.
"An enemy is coming."
Sasuke and Sakura tensed.
Naruto tightened his grip on the kunai.
"He's approaching from the front right."
....
