Chapter 269: Mission Begins, Heading to the Land of Demons
"Your mission is to protect the priestess of the Land of Demons and escort her safely to the shrine in the Land of Swamps."
Tsunade's expression remained grave as she looked across the four Shinobi standing before her.
"Time is critical, so listen carefully. I'll explain everything we currently know."
Naruto, Sakura, Neji, and Lee focused on her.
Tsunade continued.
"The source of this crisis is an otherworldly demon named Mōryō."
"Long ago, a previous priestess of the Land of Demons defeated it, but she was unable to destroy it completely. Instead, she separated its body from its soul."
"Mōryō's body was sealed within a shrine in the Land of Swamps."
"His soul was sealed separately in the Land of Demons."
Naruto's eyes narrowed.
"But the soul escaped?"
Tsunade nodded.
"Exactly."
"Mōryō has already broken free and awakened an army of immortal stone soldiers."
"They are advancing across the surrounding countries while Mōryō attempts to reunite with his sealed body."
Her voice became heavier.
"If that happens, Mōryō will fully resurrect."
Sakura frowned.
"And if he does?"
"The consequences could spread far beyond a single country."
Tsunade looked at them seriously.
"If the reports concerning Mōryō are accurate, his resurrection could eventually threaten the entire world."
The room became quiet.
"Your task is simple in principle."
Tsunade placed one hand against the desk.
"Reach the priestess of the Land of Demons."
"Protect her."
"Then escort her to the shrine in the Land of Swamps before Mōryō can reclaim his body."
"The priestess is the only person capable of sealing him completely."
Naruto listened while speaking inwardly.
"Asuramaru."
"What?"
"Do you know anything about this Mōryō?"
Asuramaru searched his memories.
Mōryō.
He vaguely remembered the creature.
An otherworldly demon capable of strengthening itself by absorbing negative emotions from humans.
It sounded impressive.
Its actual performance, however, had never been particularly terrifying.
At best, Asuramaru judged it to be around the Kage level.
For the current Naruto, there was little reason for concern.
"It is a demon that feeds on negative human emotions."
Asuramaru sounded bored.
"The more fear, hatred, grief, and despair surrounding it, the more power it can accumulate."
Naruto's expression changed slightly.
Asuramaru continued.
"But its actual strength is nothing worth worrying about."
Naruto did not completely share his confidence.
If Mōryō truly became stronger through negative emotions, then every country devastated by the Immortal Army would only provide it with more fuel.
The longer this crisis continued, the more troublesome the enemy could become.
Tsunade looked toward Neji.
"For this mission, Neji will serve as acting captain."
Neji straightened.
"As a Jōnin, you have command authority over the team."
"Yes, Lady Hokage."
Tsunade looked over the group once more.
"Several days have already passed since Mōryō's forces began moving."
"You have no time to waste."
"Depart immediately."
"Yes!"
The four left the Hokage Building.
They moved swiftly through Konoha and headed toward the village outskirts.
Once they were on the road, Neji began assigning roles.
His Byakugan activated briefly as he surveyed the surroundings.
"Our priority is the priestess."
He looked toward Sakura.
"Sakura."
"Yes?"
"You stay closest to her."
"Your Medical Ninjutsu makes you the best choice. If the priestess is injured, you need to be able to treat her immediately."
Sakura nodded.
"Understood."
Neji shifted his attention toward Lee.
"Lee."
Lee looked over energetically.
"You will be our first line of engagement whenever enemies approach."
Lee raised one fist.
"Leave it to me!"
Finally, Neji turned toward Naruto.
"Naruto."
Naruto met his gaze.
"I want one of your special kunai for each of us."
Naruto immediately understood.
Neji continued.
"Your Flying Thunder God gives you the greatest mobility in the team."
"If each of us carries one of your marked kunai, you can reinforce any position immediately."
"We should also give one to the priestess once we reach her."
His tone became more serious.
"That means your role is broader than the rest of ours."
"You need to watch over the entire team."
Naruto smiled.
"No problem."
He reached into his ninja tool pouch.
Three three pronged kunai appeared in his hand.
He passed one to Sakura.
One to Lee.
One to Neji.
Each carried his Flying Thunder God formula.
"Keep them somewhere easy to reach."
Naruto looked at the three.
"If something happens and I'm not nearby, shout my name as loudly as you can."
Lee grinned as he stored the kunai securely.
"With Naruto's Flying Thunder God, I suddenly feel much safer!"
Sakura smiled slightly.
Neji gave a small nod.
They all remembered what Naruto had been capable of during the Chūnin Exams three years earlier.
And he had spent those three years training under Jiraiya.
Whatever Naruto had been back then, he was far stronger now.
Neji tucked away the kunai.
"Then let's move."
The four accelerated.
Branches blurred beneath their feet as they raced toward the Land of Demons.
The following morning, sunlight rose over the eastern horizon.
But in the city where the priestess of the Land of Demons resided, there was no peace.
Four figures dressed in white approached the city.
Their eye sockets were completely black.
Strange markings stretched across their faces.
They wore amused smiles.
Then they attacked.
The guards stationed along the walls immediately responded.
"Enemies!"
"Fire!"
Bowstrings snapped.
A rain of arrows descended.
The four intruders did not slow.
They tore through the defenders with overwhelming force.
Men screamed.
Weapons shattered.
Bodies fell across the streets.
Within moments, the defensive line began collapsing.
Tariho, commander of the priestess's guards, saw the situation deteriorating and made an immediate decision.
"Fall back!"
He lowered his bow.
"Protect Lady Shion!"
Several surviving guards followed him into the city.
They rushed toward the priestess's residence.
Tariho threw open the doors.
"Lady Shion!"
The young priestess was still inside.
Tariho hurried toward her.
"The enemy has breached the city."
"We must evacuate immediately!"
Before Shion could answer, the ceiling exploded.
Boom!
Wood and tiles crashed into the room.
Four figures dropped through the opening.
The remaining guards reacted.
Too slowly.
The intruders moved.
Screams rang out.
Within several breaths, almost every guard in the room had fallen.
Only Tariho remained.
He retreated until he stood directly in front of Shion.
His sword trembled slightly in both hands.
But he did not move aside.
The four intruders approached.
Their leader, a young man with long purple hair, smiled.
"We have only one purpose."
His gaze settled on Shion.
"The priestess dies here."
He stepped forward.
Then something dropped from above.
Thunk!
A three pronged kunai buried itself in the floor between them.
Everyone looked toward it.
Flash!
Golden light filled the room.
A figure appeared beside the kunai, one hand touching the ground.
Naruto slowly raised his head.
"Looks like I made it."
The four intruders stopped.
Their expressions changed.
The broad shouldered white haired man among them frowned.
"What speed…"
His eyes narrowed.
"What kind of Body Flicker was that?"
The young man beside him with shoulder length blond hair watched Naruto carefully.
"No idea."
His gaze moved toward the unusual kunai.
"But anyone who makes an entrance like that probably isn't weak."
Their leader gave a low laugh.
"Whatever technique he used, this one is clearly no ordinary Shinobi."
While their attention remained fixed on Naruto, Tariho acted.
He grabbed Shion.
"This way!"
A concealed passage opened behind them.
Tariho quickly led the priestess through it.
The intruders noticed.
Naruto stepped between them and the passage.
Several three pronged kunai appeared between his fingers.
"So you're Mōryō's people."
The leader stared at him.
Naruto's voice remained calm.
"I don't know whether more of you are coming."
He lowered his stance.
"But it doesn't really matter."
His blue eyes sharpened.
"I'll finish all four of you before your reinforcements arrive."
For a moment, there was silence.
Then the white haired man laughed.
"You?"
He spread his arms.
"You think you can take all four of us by yourself?"
Another of the men, whose blue hair rose in three distinct spikes, laughed with him.
"This brat is hilarious."
"He really thinks he can stop us alone."
Naruto did not answer.
Six three pronged kunai left his hands.
Whoosh!
The weapons flew through the room.
The four attackers glanced at them but showed little concern.
Gitai stepped forward.
He grinned and drew back his fist.
"Watch me crush your kunai"
He punched toward the nearest one.
Flash!
Naruto appeared directly in front of him.
Gitai's smile vanished.
A spinning sphere of chakra was already roaring in Naruto's palm.
"Rasengan!"
Naruto drove it into Gitai's chest.
Boom!
The impact exploded through the room.
Gitai was hurled backward.
Dust and shattered debris filled the air.
The other three had barely processed what had happened when golden light flashed again.
Flash!
Then again.
Flash!
The room fell silent.
The three remaining men stood motionless.
For a brief instant, none of them understood what had happened.
Then their vision began to fall.
The world turned upside down.
From the floor, each of them saw something impossible.
Their own bodies.
Still standing.
Headless.
They had never even seen Naruto draw his sword.
Three heads struck the ground.
Their bodies followed a moment later.
Naruto stood amid the settling dust.
The entire battle had lasted only seconds.
....
