The tension of the chase had turned every Indian household into a literal pressure cooker.
Inside a cramped, dimly lit apartment in Delhi, five friendsâAbhi, Rohan, Sunny, Kabir, and Ishaanâwere huddled precariously around an old CRT television.
The air in the room was thick with cigarette smoke and the frantic, suffocating energy of a 167-run chase that felt more like 500.
___
The Delhi Living Room: Rising Blood pressure (Speaking from experience)
"OYE! HE'S GONE! HE'S GONE!"
Sunny screamed, violently launching himself off the sofa as Boult's second ball thudded brutally into Rocky's pad.
"SHUT UP, SUNNY! Inside edge! Inside edge, you idiot!" Abhi yelled back, his face a mere two inches from the grainy screen, eyes wide with terror. He was clutching a couch cushion so violently that the fabric seams were groaning. The moment Rod Tucker shook his head, Abhi collapsed backward onto the floor. "My heart... I swear to God, I felt it completely stop for a moment. If that was given out, I was throwing this entire old TV off the balcony. I am not joking."
"Look at my hands, just look at them," Kabir said, holding his palms out. They were visibly, uncontrollably shaking. "It's 2014, man, why are we still living like this? Why can't we just have one normal, boring, comfortable win? Why does every single match have to be a 'survival of the fittest' horror movie with our team?"
"Because it's New Zealand in the twilight, man," Rohan muttered, aggressively biting his fingernails down to the quick. "The ball is moving around like it's being controlled by a literal magnet. Every single time Boult releases it, I feel like I'm the one standing at the crease facing him. Did you see that bouncer? I actually ducked in my seat!"
Following Murali Vijay's sudden dismissal, Ishaanâthe resident cynic of the groupâwas pacing the length of the room like a caged animal.
"Vijay is already gone. If Rocky or Pujara falls before Stumps tonight, we are finished. We are definitely getting bowled out for 45 tomorrow morning. And look at the light! Why on earth aren't they talking about the light? These damn umpires are actually trying to kill us!"
"Look at Rocky's face on the screen, though," Sunny noted, pointing a trembling finger at the broadcast. "He's not even blinking, guys. He looks like he's playing a video game on 'Legendary' difficulty and he's just totally locked into the patterns. I've never seen a guy this calm. If I were out there in that freezing wind, I'd have swung wildly at everything just to get out of the cold and go back to the dressing room to recover."
"And that is exactly why he's out there and we're here," Abhi sighed, finally loosening his death-grip on the cushion.
"We are literally dying in this room just watching him, and he's out there staring down Trent Boult like the man owes him money. But seriously... if there is one more loud LBW shout before the end of the day, I'm checking myself straight into the hospital."
___
Back at Eden Park, the bitter wind whistled fiercely through the gaps in the grandstands, making the wooden bails vibrate visibly atop the stumps.
Over 15.4: Southee to Pujara
Southee lands an absolutely perfect outswinger, pitching on a length and shaping away late. Pujara, the 'Wall', leans calmly forward on his front foot, completely covers the line with immaculate judgment, and lets it go through to the keeper. His movements are robotic, highly precise, and incredibly frustrating for the surging Kiwis.
Ian Smith: "Oh, look at the frustration etched across Tim Southee's face right there! Genuinely, he's bowled what looks like the 'ball of the century' three times already this over, and Cheteshwar Pujara has just treated them like a gentle Sunday morning practice session in the nets. 12 runs off 52 balls now for the maestro. He's not just a batsman out there, Doully. He is a literal tectonic plate. He's just... there. Unmoved, unbothered, unbreakable!"
Ravi Shastri: "But that is the beauty of this partnership, Smithy! On one end of the spectrum, you have the 'Wolf' in Rocky Rudra who can rip your entire bowling attack apart in a matter of seconds, and on the other, you have the 'Great Wall' who will just let you tire yourself out until you physically collapse! New Zealand is throwing the kitchen sink, the plumbing, and the floorboards at them right now, but these two are completely unmoved!"
___
Last ball of the day:
Over 15.6: Southee to Pujara
Southee puts everything into a sharp, rising delivery that rears up off a length. Pujara calmly fends it right off his ribs, his soft hands ensuring the ball drops completely safely into the vacant square leg region.
No run.
Simon Doull: "And that is it! The umpires have finally seen enough out there in the middle. They're checking the light meters one last time... and yes, the light is officially too poor to continue. The bails are off, and that is Stumps on a breathless Day 2!"
___
As the players walked off the turf of Eden Park, Indian fans across the globe exhaled a collective breath they had been desperately holding for over two hours.
On Reddit:
r/Cricket Post-Day Thread
u/OldSchoolCric: "I seriously need a stiff drink. 35/1 in 16 overs feels like the single most intense block of cricket I have ever witnessed in my entire life. Rocky surviving that venomous opening burst from Trent Boult is the stuff of actual legends. That opening maiden over was a million times more exciting than most T20 fifties you'll ever see."
u/MahiWay: "Pujara grinding out 12* off 54 balls is genuinely one of the most beautiful things I've seen all day. He is completely shielding Rocky out there. Let him breathe. He knows damn well that if Rocky is still standing at the crease by Lunch tomorrow, the match is over. 132 runs left. It's a pure, unadulterated battle of nerves now."
u/Kiwi_Cric: "We totally missed our window tonight, lads. We had them hopping around like crazy in that twilight. If Baz had just held onto that Dhoni catch yesterday, or if that massive LBW shout on Rocky had pitched just an inch higher... we'd be celebrating a famous win right now. Tomorrow morning, under the bright sun, the ball isn't going to hoop around anywhere near as much. We're in big trouble."
___
Back in the Delhi Living Room
Abhi stood up, his voice dead serious as he pointed a finger around the smoky room.
"Okay, 132 runs to go. Nobody move a muscle. Tomorrow morning, we sit in the exact same spots. Same clothes. Absolutely no talking during the first five overs of the day. We are superstitions-only from here on outâwe are bringing this home."
Summary Day 2 stumps.
Scorecard: India 35/1 (16 Overs)
Rocky Rudra: 19* (32)
Cheteshwar Pujara: 12* (54)
India needs 132 runs to win with 3 days remaining, i.e., with 270 overs while New Zealand needs 9 wickets to win.
___
The Delhi apartment was a total tomb of superstition.
Abhi was glued to his spot in the exact same unwashed jersey from yesterday, Sunny was officially banned from even touching the sofa because India had lost a wicket the last time he sat there, and Kabir was literally holding a puja thali, quietly waving the incense near the TV screen.
"Nobody move a single muscle," Abhi whispered tensely as the broadcast flickered to life. "The sun is completely out in Auckland. The twilight swing is gone. If Rocky survives just the first ten minutes of this session, we are winning this match."
___
Day 3: Over 17
16.1: Boult to Rudra
Boult steams in with the morning sun at his back and pitches it slightly short. In a flash, Rocky shifts his weight entirely onto the back foot, unleashing a trademark, ferocious Ponting pull shot.
The thunderous crack of the willow echoes violently through the TV speakers.
FOUR RUNS.
"OIIII! DID YOU SEE THAT? Shot, Rocky! Beautiful shot!"
Abhi almost lost control of his body while jumping.
Ian Smith (on the air): "Oh, goodness me! Absolutely no sight-setting required, no feeling his way into the morning session at all! Rocky Rudra has just emphatically dispatched Trent Boult to the mid-wicket boundary with a pull shot that had 'Punter' written all over it!"
16.2: Boult to Rudra
Boult goes much fuller, desperately trying to over-correct his length. Rocky stays perfectly upright and leans into a glorious straight driveâhigh elbow, holding the pose, checking the follow-through with pure arrogance.
FOUR RUNS.
Rohan covered his eyes while speaking.
"Boundary! Back-to-back! He's in the mood, boys! Don't celebrate yet, keep the nazar off him!"
Ravi Shastri (on the air): "UP AND OVERâno, it is a bullet along the carpet! He is timing the daylight out of that red cherry! I'll tell you what, folks, this isn't just a run-chase anymore. This is a definitive statement!"
16.3: Boult to Rudra â DOT
A searing, toes-crushing yorker from Boult. Rocky reacts instantly and digs it out coolly with a dead bat.
"Bas, bas. Respect the good balls. Don't get greedy now, Rocky," Sunny muttered from the floor.
16.4: Boult to Rudra
Boult tries to assert dominance with the short ball again. Rocky is waiting for it and hooks it aggressively. It's not just a run-scoring shot; it's a complete dismissal of the bowler's authority.
The ball disappeared high into the Auckland sky and landed deep into the roaring stands.
SIX RUNS.
Kabir immediately started ringing the puja bell. "SIXER!! HE'S DESTROYING HIM! 14 runs in 4 balls, he's a madman!"
Simon Doull: "That is absolutely massive! He is playing with Trent Boult's head right now, Smithy. That open stance allows him to pick up the length a microsecond earlier than anyone else. This is a technical masterclass from the teenager!"
16.5: Boult to Rudra
A classic, Ponting-esque punch straight through extra cover. Rocky rises onto his back foot, punches through the line with incredibly soft yet firm wrists, finding the gap with surgical precision.
FOUR RUNS.
Abhi put his head in his hands and said with a trembling smile, "I'm actually crying, guys. He is not human. 18 runs off the over already!"
16.6: Boult to Rudra â DOT
A soft, authoritative defensive block right from the center of the blade to end the over.
End of Over 17:
India 53/1 (Target: 167, Need 114 more)
On the Crease:
Rocky Rudra: 37* (38 balls)
Cheteshwar Pujara: 12* (54 balls)
Ian Smith: "Eighteen massive runs off the very first over of the morning! It is almost an exact replica of that extraordinary Rudra vs Boult showdown in the first innings where he took him for 32. The terrifying 'Twilight Zone' is officially over, folks, and the bright Auckland daylight belongs completely to the Wolf!"
___
Over 18: Tim Southee to Cheteshwar Pujara
Everyone stayed silent as Pujara took strike.
17.1 - 17.6: Pujara did what he was assigned to do and he always does. He absorbed the pressure. He blunt the ball. He found one boundary off a loose flick to fine leg, then dead-bats the rest.
End of Over 18: India 57/1 (Target: 167)
Pujara: 16* (60)
Rudra: 37* (38)
Rohan said with a reassuring tone, "Okay, 22 runs in two overs. 110 more to go. The math is getting simpler. My BP is coming down slightly."
___
As the next 45 minutes unfolded, the suffocating tension in the Delhi apartment dissolved into a full-blown, chaotic party.
Over 20: Rocky hits Ish Sodhi for two consecutive sixes.
Sunny launched himself completely off the floor, knocking over a plastic chair.
"Sodhi looks like he wants to cry! Someone get the man a towel, please!"
Over 23: Pujara starts opening up, finding the gaps as the field spreads.
Abhi slapped Rohan hard on the back, his eyes glued to the screen. "Even the Wall is dancing today! Look at that flick! Cheeka, you beauty!"
By the end of Over 25, the New Zealand bowlers looked thoroughly, hopelessly broken.
Brendon McCullum was frantically moving fielders after every single delivery, but under the bright Auckland sun, the gaps in the outfield felt like wide-open canyons.
Rudra was batting in a pure, unadulterated trance, his Kookaburra bat sounding like a literal gunshot every single time it met the leather.
Scoreboard: 25.0 Overs
India: 102/1
Target: 167
Runs Needed: 65
Rocky Rudra: 63* (62 balls, 7 fours, 3 sixes)
Cheteshwar Pujara: 35* (84 balls, 4 fours)
Ian Smith: "We are witnessing a clinical, cold-blooded assassination of a fourth-innings target, Doully. From the very first ball this morning, India has been trying to chased these runs down like they've planned for them after last night debacle! Rocky Rudra has gone from 19 to 63 in the blink of an eye!"
Ravi Shastri: "I'll tell you what, it is a magnificent 98-run partnership and counting! These two are making an absolute mockery of the conditions out there. New Zealand needs a miracleâthey need a wicket, a lightning bolt, a loose shot, anything to stop this bleeding. But the Wolf is in no mood to let go of the throat!"
Back in the Delhi Living Room
Abhi finally let go of the unwashed jersey he'd been clutching all night, a massive grin breaking across his face.
"Boys, go get the sweets ready right now. We are winning this match easily. Gut feeling... Get get ready to fight back in twitter against their media slanders. This time, we are completely embarrassing them in their own backyard and make their media eat their own words."
