The Auckland sun dipped lower, casting long, dramatic shadows across the emerald turf of Eden Park.
As Rocky Rudra took his guard at the pavilion end, the stadium lights flickered on, glinting off the face of his blade.
For him, this custom piece of willow wasn't about the aesthetic now, it was a statement.
The Kookaburra Kahuna: Wolf Edition resembled a relic forged from a future era of cricket.
The face displayed a classic, lethal black-and-silver colorway, but as Rocky tapped it into the crease, the broadcast cameras caught the spine—the intricate, laser-etched silhouette of a wolf howling into the grain.
Rocky completely dismissed the pitch from his mind. His thoughts focused entirely on the vitriolic headlines from two weeks prior: "Arrogant Teenager," "Money over Legacy," "Greedy Business Move."
Critics had aggressively attacked his partnership deal that Bunty Sajdeh worked hard to pull it off, even had the audacity to question his loyalty to Indian heritage.
To Rocky, Shadow represented family, and this willow containing his wolf's likeness defined his pack.
He refused to justify his commercial choices to the public.
Right now, he wanted nothing more than to bury those meaningless critiques under a mountain of runs.
___
In The Commentary Booth
Ian Smith: "Just see that piece of willow. I've observed thousands of bats over the decades, but that Wolf engraving... it is aesthetically magnificent. It commands a genuine presence, Simon. It looks entirely ready to bite."
Simon Doull: "It's a fearless look for an incredibly bold player. But Trent Boult stands at the top of his mark. He holds the brand-new ball, the air is ripe for swing, and he is absolutely fuming after that first-innings batting collapse. The rising 'Wolf' encounters a true Kiwi storm right now."
Ravi Shastri: (Voice booming) "Don't misread the situation, Doully. He's holding a personal grudge rather than a standard bat. Look at his eyes. He is staring down Boult as if the man were personally responsible for every critical tweet written about him over the last fortnight."
__
1st Over: Trent Boult vs. Rocky Rudra
0.1: Boult to Rudra
Boult charged in, hunting for the classic left-arm inswinger targeting the pads. It arrived slightly full, but Rocky refused to spend time settling into the innings.
He shuffled across, his front foot clearing the path, and uncorked a massive, authoritative swivel-pull—a stroke straight from the Ricky Ponting masterclass.
The ball caught the heavy Auckland wind and sailed clean over the deep square-leg fence.
Ian Smith: "OH GOODNESS! The very first delivery of the innings! He has gone the absolute distance! Ponting would marvel at that swivel, but that raw power belongs entirely to Rudra!"
0.2: Boult to Rudra
Visibly rattled by Rudra's intent, Boult attempted to correct his length, overcompensating with a full, straight delivery. Rocky leaned effortlessly into the ball with a high, elegant elbow. It showcased the classic 'Punter' straight drive, amplified by a violent, unrestricted follow-through.
The ball screamed directly past Boult's head, clearing the sightscreen with astonishing ease.
Simon Doull: "HE HAS LAUNCHED IT! Back-to-back sixes to ignite the chase! This transcends a standard Test match; this has become a pure execution!"
0.3: Boult to Rudra
Boult attempted a wide yorker to escape the ongoing carnage. Rocky anticipated the trajectory perfectly, dropping his back knee to execute a sensational, lofted cover drive.
The ball soared toward the heavens, hanging in the air before landing deep within the grandstands. The Kookaburra Wolf glinted sharply under the stadium floodlights as he completed his swing.
Ravi Shastri: "THREE IN A ROW! ABSOLUTE MADNESS! PURE, UNADULTERATED MADNESS! He dismantles the premier left-armer on the planet as if reducing him to a mere club bowler!"
0.4: Boult to Rudra
Boult dropped his length short, desperately trying to extract steep bounce. Rocky was entirely prepared. Standing tall, his weight shifted backward in a flash as he executed a fierce, punishing square cut.
The leather slammed into the boundary rope before the point fielder could even register a reaction.
Ian Smith: "The sound echoing off that Kookaburra... it resembles a literal gunshot. The density of that willow must be extraordinary. Twenty-two runs scored off just four deliveries!"
0.5: Boult to Rudra
Boult opted for an off-cutter, angling the ball across the right-hander. Rocky read the variation flawlessly. He paused, allowed the ball to travel to him, and creamed it through the covers with a textbook check-drive.
It stood out as the most Ponting-esque stroke of the over—pure timing, elegance, and class.
Simon Doull: "He is playing with him now. He makes an absolute mockery of these bowling conditions. The crowd has fallen completely silent. They are simply... staring in disbelief."
0.6: Boult to Rudra
The final delivery. Out of options, Boult attempted a desperate bouncer to force Rocky backward. Rocky, already light on his toes, rose with the bounce. He hooked it—abandoning a controlled drop to smash a violent, horizontal-bat assault.
The ball sailed effortlessly over the fine-leg boundary, disappearing completely into the Auckland night sky.
Ravi Shastri: "SIX MORE! THIRTY-TWO RUNS SMASHED OFF THE OPENING OVER! HE HAS UTTERLY DESTROYED TRENT BOULT! Have you ever witnessed anything of this magnitude in the entire history of Test cricket?!"
...
OVER 1: THE AUCKLAND ASSAULT
0.1 Boult to Rudra - SWIVEL-PULL (6 RUNS)
0.2 Boult to Rudra - STRAIGHT DRIVE (6 RUNS)
0.3 Boult to Rudra - LOFTED COVER (6 RUNS)
0.4 Boult to Rudra - SQUARE CUT (4 RUNS)
0.5 Boult to Rudra - CHECK-DRIVE (4 RUNS)
0.6 Boult to Rudra - HORIZONTAL HOOK (6 RUNS)
...
As the umpire signaled the end of the over, Rocky appeared entirely unsatisfied.
He completely ignored the flashing neon numbers on the scoreboard.
He simply walked to the mid-pitch for custom gloves touch with his partner then walked back to the non-striker's end, tapped the toe of his bat twice against the turf, and calmly adjusted the Velcro straps of his gloves.
The Eden Park crowd remained totally paralyzed.
They had filed through the turnstiles expecting a grueling, traditional Test-match grind... instead, they had witnessed a six-minute demolition.
Trent Boult stood at the bowler's end, hands resting heavily on his hips, staring blankly at the pitch in total disbelief.
Ian Smith: "I... I am genuinely left without words. Trent Boult just conceded thirty-two runs in a single over. In a Test match. In the absolute first over of the innings. Rocky Rudra abandons all pretenses of caution. He is just venting his fury. That contract controversy? That Kookaburra deal? Consider it paid in full with those six hits."
Simon Doull: "Look closely at the Indian dugout. Even Virat Kohli stands near the railing with his mouth wide open. They recognized his talent, but this? This transcends cricket. The Wolf moves past merely announcing his arrival. He takes a massive, bloody bite out of the series on day one."
Rocky glanced briefly toward the pavilion before refocusing on the twenty-two yards.
The message had been delivered with bold letters.
The "Unbranded King" was officially dead. The Wolf of Kookaburra had arrived, and his hunger remained entirely unsatiated.
SCORECARD: OVER 1.0
India: 32 / 0 (1.0 Over)
Rocky Rudra: 32* (6 balls - 4x6, 2x4)
Murali Vijay: 0* (0 balls)
___
2nd Over: Tim Southee
The air across Eden Park ceased to merely feel cold, it felt entirely frozen.
The home spectators sat in a state of collective paralysis. Typically, after a historic thirty-two-run onslaught, the following bowler provides a brief strategic breather—a momentary reset for the fielding unit.
Yet, as Tim Southee stood at the top of his mark, his face a grim mask of absolute determination, he resembled a man preparing to march directly into a gale-force wind.
1.1: Southee to Vijay
Southee delivered a highly disciplined, good-length ball clipping the off-stump line. Murali Vijay, displaying the immense tactical selflessness of a seasoned opening veteran, simply soft-handed the ball toward mid-on and took off into an immediate sprint. He refused to search for a boundary.
He hunted exclusively for the non-striker's end, fully aware that the stadium had not turned up to watch a defensive masterclass today. He gladly surrendered the strike, returning it to a vengeful teenager determined to vent his frustration on the local attack.
One run.
Ian Smith: "Vijay executes the smartest possible piece of cricket. He gets himself entirely out of the line of fire. He wants a front-row seat to whatever historic madness is about to unfold next."
Scoreboard: India - 33/0 (1.1)
Rocky Rudra: 32* (6)
Murali Vijay: 1* (1)
Southee stood at the crease, looking at his captain, the stand in captain Ross Taylor, who frantically waved two fielders back to the rope.
Rocky stepped into the box, his Kookaburra Wolf Edition resting on his shoulder, his eyes locked onto the bowler like a predator sighting its target in the clearing storm.
___
1.2: Southee to Rudra
Rocky settled deeply into his wide, crouched, signature Punter's stance. Southee attempted a clever variation, dropping the pace with a slower-ball bouncer to trick the teenager.
Rocky waited... and waited... then unleashed a brutal, horizontal-bat pull that nearly cleared the structural roof of the grandstands. The ball was a monster.
SIX RUNS.
Simon Doull: "HE IS SIMPLY NOT HUMAN! That has gone clean out of the stadium! He refuses to even track its flight trajectory. He just taps his bat on the pitch and stares directly back at Southee. The absolute audacity of this young man!"
1.3: Southee to Rudra
Southee searched for the base of the stumps with a yorker. Rocky's hands moved with lightning velocity. He opened the face of that Kookaburra Wolf Edition at the final microsecond, carving the delivery precisely through the narrow gap separating point and cover-point. The leather became a blur.
FOUR RUNS.
Ravi Shastri: "CRACKED! This is arguably the fastest outfield on the planet, and the ball still completely beat the broadcast camera tracking! Rudra flies to forty-two runs off just eight deliveries! What on earth are we witnessing?!"
1.4: Southee to Rudra
Southee, buckling under immense psychological pressure, pushed a length delivery outside the off-stump. Rocky stood tall, transferring his weight flawlessly to punch it through extra cover.
He offered no follow-through—just a short, sharp, compact jab. It defined pure 'Punter' perfection.
FOUR RUNS.
Ian Smith: "Another boundary cracks against the rope! He moves to forty-six. He stands a solitary hit away from the impossible. The tension inside this stadium is thicker than the Auckland morning fog."
1.5: Southee to Rudra
Southee attempted to cramp him for room, angling the leather sharply into the ribs. Rocky simply shuffled across his stumps, using the angle to clip the ball off his pads with a lethal flick of the wrists.
The shot beat mid-wicket and raced away into the boundary cushions.
Ravi Shastri: (Screaming into the microphone) "THERE IT IS! THE FASTEST FIFTY IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL CRICKET! TEN BALLS! HE HAS UTTERLY CRUSHED YUVRAJ'S TWELVE-BALL RECORD! HE HAS OBLITERATED THE TEST RECORD BY FOURTEEN BALLS! WE ARE WITNESSING THE IMPOSSIBLE!"
___
The stadium became a complete vacuum of sound. Rocky refrained from raising his bat to acknowledge the historic milestone.
His face remained entirely devoid of a smile. He simply adjusted his helmet grill, his eyes burning with a cold, vengeful light.
In the away dugout, Virat Kohli was actively leaping on the metal railings, his face crimson from shouting.
MS Dhoni stood near the bench, clapping slowly, a profound look of respect painted across his face.
HISTORIC MILESTONE: THE 10-BALL 50
New Record - Rocky Rudra (50 runs off 10 balls)
Old Test Record - Misbah-ul-Haq (24 balls) - BEATEN BY 14 BALLS
Old T20I Record - Yuvraj Singh (12 balls) - BEATEN BY 2 BALLS
___
1.6: Southee to Rudra
Southee appeared thoroughly broken at the crease. He delivered a desperate, speculative short ball. Rocky smelled blood in the water. Rocking back instantly, he executed a majestic, towering hook shot.
The ball sailed high over the fine-leg boundary, dropping heavily among the stunned home spectators.
Simon Doull: "SIX MORE! HE ENDS THE OVER WITH A MASSIVE SIX! TWENTY-FIVE RUNS CONCEDED OFF THE OVER! This represents an outright massacre! I have never witnessed an assault of this nature in a Test match, an ODI, or even a video game simulation!"
___
SCORECARD: OVER 2.0
India: 57 / 0 (2.0 Overs)
Rocky Rudra: 56* (11 balls - 6,6,6,4,4,6 | 6,4,4,4,6)
Murali Vijay: 1* (1 ball)
___
Murali Vijay walked slowly toward the middle of the pitch to converse with his partner. He carried his helmet half-off his head, his hand covering his mouth in a gesture of pure shock.
He stared at Rocky, glanced up at the flashing scoreboard, and looked back at the teenager. Words completely failed him.
He simply offered a fist-bump, which Rocky met with a robotic, intensely focused tap.
Ian Smith: "Look at Vijay's expression. That is the face of an opening batsman who has played a hundred professional matches and suddenly realized he knows nothing about this sport. Fifty-six runs hammered in eleven balls. In a Test match. Against Southee and Boult. On their own home turf..."
Simon Doull: "I am currently scanning the history books. He has officially broken Yuvraj Singh's 12-ball T20I record, Sanath Jayasuriya's 17-ball ODI record, and Misbah-ul-Haq's 24-ball Test benchmark. He did not just break them, he obliterated them. He has created an entirely separate category of batting today."
Ravi Shastri: "This is the definition of the 'Bad Boy' era, Doully! This is the 'Wolf' venting his emotion! Every single pundit who criticized his lucrative Kookaburra deal, every media outlet that labeled India 'One-Hit Wonders' after that insane carry job he put up against South Africa—Rocky Rudra is personally handing them a receipt worth fifty-six runs! Look at that dugout! They are celebrating as if they just lifted the World Cup! And why wouldn't they? They are looking at a god dressed in white flannels!"
___
In the New Zealand dugout, Brendon McCullum sat with his chin resting heavily in his palm, his eyes wide with disbelief.
Having planned to rest his body, he had handed the active on-field captaincy over to Ross Taylor.
The original plan seemed simple: allow Ross Taylor to manage the responsibility until the 5th over.
From the looks of it, however, no amount of field placements could counter this frantic level of violence.
He reigned as the king of ultra-aggressive batting long before the style earned a global name, yet even he appeared slightly intimidated by the sheer velocity of the destruction inflicted on his frontline bowlers.
The New Zealand fielders wandered aimlessly across the turf, looking thoroughly lost.
The pre-match chirping had ceased entirely. The sledging was dead.
The only sound remaining was the echo of 56 runs reverberating in their ears.
Ian Smith: "The landscape of the game has fundamentally shifted. Right here, at 4:50 PM in Auckland, the sport of Test cricket has been altered forever by a teenager from Cuttack. The Wolf bypassed the front door entirely... He has torn the whole house down to its foundations."
