The morning after the grand revelation broke, a sense of calm finally returned to the household.

Rocky had already took a small, satisfying revenge on Shadow by dragging the heavy adolescent into a thoroughly rough bath. 😭🤣

Now, Rocky sat on the edge of the partially shredded teakwood sofa, the comforting scent of Grandma Rita's fresh Pitha and morning incense wafting through the rooms.

Shadow lay sprawled contentedly at his feet, looking entirely too smug for an animal that had just been exposed as a literal apex predator.

As the teenager watched the wet, black fur glisten in the sunlight, the full weight of the situation hit him with the force of a bouncer.

Every single odd look from his teammates at the airport, the vet's cryptic whispers in Durban, the midnight rush in Mumbai, and MS Dhoni's calm insistence on the "hybrid" paperwork—the entire puzzle finally made perfect sense now.

He had gone from a typical pet owner into the legal guardian of a rare black wolf.

He slowly pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over his contact list.

A sudden wave of deep warmth, mixed with a healthy dose of embarrassment, washed over him.

These legends... men he had only ever seen on television screens during his previous life as a structural engineer... had bent international regulations and gone to the ends of the earth to help him keep a wild animal, simply because they saw a young man who refused to let a starving pup die in the brush.

___

Rocky hit dial. The line rang twice before that familiar, unshakeable voice picked up on the other end.

"Mahi Bhai? It's me, Rocky."

There was a brief, deliberate silence, followed by a low, knowing chuckle that instantly made Rocky's ears turn bright red.

"So," Dhoni said, his voice dripping with pure amusement, "did your Grandma finally find out, or did Shadow decide it was time to howl at the Cuttack moon?"

"She found out everything, Bhai," Rocky sighed deeply, leaning back against the single remaining sofa cushion that wasn't actively leaking white foam.

"She's a retired head matron. I can't hide a single thing from her. She called him a 'disgruntled old man' and a 'forest demon' before she figured out he's a literal wolf. But why didn't you just tell me the truth in Durban, Mahi Bhai? I feel like a fool realizing I was calling him a Husky in front of the entire airport!"

MS Dhoni: "Rocky, if I had dropped the truth on you back in Durban, you would have completely panicked. You would have overthought the international legality, the safety protocols, and all the endless 'what-ifs.' I saw the exact way you held that pup in your arms. You treated him like he was the only thing that mattered in that entire moment. You didn't need the heavy burden of the truth right then. You just needed to get him safely to a home."

"Besides... watching you passionately explain a 'Hybrid Husky' to the senior customs officials was easily one of the most hilarious things I've witnessed in years."

Rocky laughed out loud, the remaining tension completely leaving his chest as he shook his head.

"You are truly unbelievable, Bhai. But thank you. Truly. For setting up the meeting with Ritesh bhaiya, for safeguarding the paperwork... for everything."

"Don't thank me just yet. Wait until he's three years old and decides he wants to lead his own local pack," Dhoni chuckled, clearly joking.

"Just ensure he stays well-fed and keep him close to you. He chose you as his partner, Rocky. That is an incredibly rare thing to find in this world."

As the call wrapped up, Rocky looked down at the large, wet paws of his companion.

___

Next, Rocky dialed Virat Kohli.

This one was picked up instantly, punctuated by the heavy, rhythmic sound of a clanking commercial gym in the background.

"OYE! THE WOLF-MAN CALLS!" Virat shouted, his booming voice echoing off the concrete walls of his workout space.

Rocky Rudra groaned, "Oh, so even you knew the entire time too?"

Virat erupted, howling with unbridled laughter on the other end.

"Knew? Rocky, I haven't slept properly for weeks because I've been waiting for this phone call! A Husky? Really, kid? With those massive paws and that stealthy walk? I was standing right there on the grass when you fed him that chicken snack, and I instantly thought, 'This boy has just adopted a miniature version of a direwolf straight out of Game of Thrones.' How's the house holding up? Is there a single piece of furniture left intact?"

"The heirloom sofa is now a crime scene, Cheeku Bhai," Rocky admitted, casting a side-eye at the now-exposed iron springs. "Dadi nearly fainted from the shock. She lectured me for a straight hour about the 'Jungle Book' moving to Cuttack."

Virat Kohli: "Listen to me, Rocky. You've officially got the most badass companion on the entire planet. Other people buy Ferraris and luxury mansions to show off. You have a pure black wolf from the African wild walking beside you. Just ensure he doesn't chew up your match-winning bats! Seriously though, kid, I'm genuinely glad he's settled into the family."

"It shows your heart is exactly in the right place. But expect to be relentlessly teased in the dressing room for the next ten years minimum. I've already looped in Shikhar and Rohit. Even without me, they picked up the clues from you... You can't blame me here... You are officially 'Mowgli' from this moment on."

"Great. Just what I needed for my reputation," Rocky muttered, though a massive, unstoppable smile was plastered completely across his face.

___

Rocky finally made the international call back to South Africa.

Jacques Kallis picked up after three rings, his voice warm, resonant, and carrying the distinct, relaxed hum of a Cape Town afternoon.

"Rocky! How is our famous 'Northern Husky' adapting to the intense heat of India?"

Rocky felt a sudden lump form in his throat.

This man, a titan of international cricket, had actively utilized his immense legendary status to carefully navigate the strict environmental laws of a foreign nation, all for a young rookie he had only just met.

"He's doing exceptionally well, Jacques. He's... well, he's a wolf. I finally know the truth now... And, Thank you so much for not letting the authorities take him away from that ground. I fully understand the risk you took with Dr. Marais."

"Please send my deepest gratitude to Dr. Marais too."

"Alright. You don't need to worry too much." Jacques Kallis replied with warm tone then continued, "Shadow belongs right beside you, Rocky. Out here in South Africa, we possess a deep, cultural respect for the wild. When MS detailed the situation to me that morning, I knew instantly we had to step in. That pup was a tragic victim of some very dangerous, lawless people, and you directly gave him a second chance at life. In my eyes, saving that single innocent life is just as monumentally important as all those spectacular runs you scored on the pitch at Kingsmead... Tell me, is he behaving himself?"

"He completely shredded a twenty five-year-old heirloom sofa within four hours of arrival, Jacques," Rocky said, looking down ruefully at the wooden splinters.

Jacques Kallis chuckled heartily over the static-heavy line.

"Consider that his very first official trophy on Indian soil. Give him my warmest regards. And Rocky? Keep that fierce fire burning in your eyes—the same one you showed when you stood your ground against Steyn, and the one you showed when you protected that helpless pup. That rare spirit is what truly defines a champion."

Rocky hung up the phone, the long-distance line going quiet, and looked down.

Shadow was tracking his every movement, his striking amber eyes beautifully reflecting the soft, golden evening light filtering into the Cuttack veranda.

The young wolf let out a familiar, soft "huff" and gently nudged Rocky's open hand with his wet, black nose.

A profound sense of gratitude washed completely over the young cricketer. He had returned to his homeland with far more than just historic batting records and media fame.

He had returned with the unshakeable friendship of the game's greatest legends, and a wild companion who would willingly walk through fire for him.

"You heard them, Shadow," Rocky whispered softly, reaching down to scratch the thick, velvet fur on the wolf's neck. "According to Dadi, you're a 'disgruntled old man' and a 'forest demon.' But you're my demon now. Come on, let's go see if she has any more fresh Pitha left in the kitchen before you decide to eat the living room curtains."

Shadow stood up in one fluid, powerful motion, his bushy tail giving a single, dignified, horizontal wag—the closest thing to a domestic "thank you" Rocky would ever receive.

The frantic South African flashback was officially over, the deep administrative secrets were safely locked away, and in the historic heart of Odisha, a formidable new legend was quietly growing.

It was a legend that walked confidently on four heavy legs, possessed golden eyes, and moved through the red dust exactly like a shadow.

The grand illusion was gone, yet the warmth of their connection remained, permanently locking them into each other's lives.

___

The third week of January in Odisha brought a distinct transition—not just in the crisp winter weather, but in the entire layout of the Rudra household.

The quiet, unassuming residence in Cuttack had transformed into a minor fortress.

A massive, reinforced black iron gate now stood imposing at the entrance, tall enough to discourage any prying eyes and sturdy enough to safely contain a rapidly growing "shadow."

Rocky had spent the entire week training Biswa, a local former wrestler with a heart of gold and nerves of steel, to act as the primary estate caretaker when he was away on national duty.

"Don't lock eyes with him for too long, Biswa Da," Rocky cautioned as Shadow stood perfectly still by the newly installed pillars, his glowing amber eyes tracking a squirrel with razor-sharp predatory precision. "And whatever you do, never turn and run away from him. If he moves toward you, just stand your ground. He is fundamentally not a domestic dog. Remember, he is a partner... a friend. Treat him with respect, and he will return it in full."

Biswa nodded slowly, a bead of sweat tracing down his forehead as Shadow let out that characteristic, low-frequency huff. Slowly, the sleek black wolf stepped forward, sniffing the caretaker's heavy leather boots.

He didn't growl or bare his fangs. After a tense, quiet minute, Shadow sat back smoothly on his haunches, offering a single, slow blink of his golden eyes.

The security pact was officially signed.

After all, Rudra wouldn't be foolish to hire just anyone. Biswa, the former wrestler had a good character, a cousin of one of Rocky's former employer, the tea stall uncle who provided a lot of help during his difficult period.

Additionally, he was an introvert, so Rocky wasn't worried that he would gossip behind his back.

___

By the time Rocky navigated his car to the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar to pick up his high-profile agent, Bunty Sajdeh, his phone had been vibrating non-stop.

Bunty Sajdeh—the man famously responsible for managing Virat Kohli and the undisputed architect of modern Indian athlete branding—stormed out of the terminal looking like he'd just stepped off a high-fashion runway in Milan, completely unfazed by the rising eastern humidity.

"Rocky! My man! The famous Cyclone!" Bunty shouted enthusiastically, pulling the young batsman into a high-energy corporate hug.

"Do you have any idea what you've unleashed? My main office in Mumbai looks like a chaotic post office nowadays. Every major sports brand from here to Melbourne is actively throwing blank cheques at my desk!"

They drove straight to a luxury suite at the Mayfair Lagoon in Bhubaneswar.

The resort room was sprawling and lush, surrounded by tranquil waters and dense greenery, but the atmosphere inside the suite immediately shifted to pure, high-stakes business.

Bunty laid out a series of thick, heavy folders on the polished mahogany coffee table.

"Let's talk concrete numbers," Bunty said, his eyes bright with the thrill of a historic deal.

"Because you played that entire South African series as the 'Unbranded King,' the corporate FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) is terrifyingly real. Look at this spread."

"First is MRF... They are offering a staggering 8 Crore per year. It's the highest debutant offer in history. They want you and Virat to be the 'Double-Barrel Gun' of Indian cricket."

Bunty paused after seeing no emotions on Rocky's face, he continued to introduce, "Next is Spartan: 6 Crore. They want to capitalize on your connection with MS Dhoni."

"Adidas is offering ₹5.5 Crore. Sleek, global premium appeal targeting international demographics."

"Both SS and SG are offering 4 Crore plus a lifetime supply of custom gear, leaning heavily on the 'Made in India' sentiment."

Rocky listened in silence, his fingers tracing the rim of a water glass.

"I'm rejecting the MRF contract, Bunty."

Bunty froze mid-motion, his expensive pen hovering halfway to his notepad as he stared across the mahogany table.

"Excuse me? Rocky, that is eight crore rupees per annum. That is debutant history. That is 'set-your-family-for-life' money before you've even played a single home international match. Why on earth are you walking away from that?"

"Virat Bhai is the sun, Bunty," Rocky said, his voice completely grounded, calm, and certain. "I've stood right beside him in the nets. I know exactly what is coming over the next decade. He is going to dominate international cricket in a way that will leave absolutely no breathing room for anyone else under that exact same commercial banner. If I sign with MRF, the cricketing world will always unconsciously view me as the 'Second' to the King, as a Prince. MRF needs exactly one definitive face, and that face is Virat Kohli. I want my own distinct identity. I don't want the fans to get confused or draw comparisons the moment they look at the sticker on my bat."

Bunty stared at him in silence for a long moment, deeply impressed by the teenage rookie's incredible maturity and long-term commercial foresight.

"Truly bold. Highly risky, Rocky, but undeniably brilliant strategy. If we cross out the corporate sun... who do we target then?"

"Before we make any final decisions," Rocky said, sliding his smartphone smoothly across the mahogany table, "I need you to look at the security arrangements I've established at the house. This is Shadow."

Bunty picked up the device and began scrolling through the images.

The first picture captured Shadow sitting with rigid discipline by the newly installed iron gate.

The second was a sharp close-up of the animal's face, those liquid-gold eyes reflecting an intense, eerie glow in the camera flash.

The third and final image showed Shadow standing fully extended on his hind legs to retrieve a piece of meat from a high branch, revealing his true, formidable length.

The remaining color completely drained from Bunty's face. He sat back heavily into the plush leather sofa, staring at the screen as if he had just witnessed a ghost.

"Rocky... that... that is definitely not a domestic Husky. I've seen pedigree Huskies all across Europe and even high-end breeds in India. That is a wild predator. That is a literal wolf, man!"

"He's a certified 'Northern Hybrid',"

Rocky replied smoothly with a wink, echoing Dhoni's cover story.

"But he is the reason I need a brand partnership that aligns with my aesthetic... Just like him. Something powerful. Sharp. Exceptionally rare."

Bunty took a deep, stabilizing breath, attempting to settle his racing heart as he adjusted his blazer.

"Okay... okay, I follow your vision. If that is the specific energy we are targeting, then there is one final folder in my briefcase. I deliberately kept it for last because they are a premium international heritage brand and notoriously selective about signing Indian players. They aren't offering the highest upfront capital... it's a baseline between 3.5 to 4.5 Crore—but they provide something no domestic brand can match, that is, custom aerodynamic engineering at their headquarters in Melbourne and direct access to the exact premium English Willow clefts reserved for Ricky Ponting."

He slid the sleek, final folder across the table.

Embossed on the cover was the iconic green bird logo: Kookaburra.

"I'm not signing a contract based on a piece of marketing paper, Bunty," Rocky said, standing up and grabbing his car keys. "I don't care about the eight crore or the three crore offers. I care about the raw quality of the wood. Let's head to the largest sports distributor in Bhubaneswar. I need to feel the ping."

They drove down to the massive Official Sports Gallery flagship store.

The moment they stepped inside, the owner instantly recognized the hero of the South African tour, nearly tripping over a display of tennis balls as he scrambled to clear the main aisle for them.

Rocky walked past the standard rows of pre-stickered retail bats. He headed straight to the restricted back room, where the ultra-premium, unstickered Grade-1 English Willow clefts were kept under climate-controlled conditions exclusively for international players.

Bunty stood back, watching intently as Rocky picked up cleft after cleft, tapping them firmly against his shoe and closing his eyes to sense the vibrations.

Rudra shook his head, placing down SS, "Too bottom-heavy. Alters the swing path."

Once again shaking his head, he rejected SG.

"The grain structure is far too wide. Won't sustain high-impact pacing."

His blunt reply left Bunty speechless.

Then, his fingers closed around a clean Kookaburra Kahuna profile. The face was immaculate, boasting ten to twelve perfectly straight, even grains running down the blade.

He stepped into the center of the aisle, settling into his batting stance.

He executed a shadow-pull shot through the air, followed by a lightning-fast, classic cover drive.

The bat felt like a natural extension of his hands...light as a feather during the pickup, yet when he tapped a leather ball against the sweet spot, the resulting ping echoed through the massive showroom like a gunshot.

"Look at the pick-up, Bunty," Rocky whispered, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "The weight distribution is centered perfectly toward the mid-high region of the blade. It's light enough to react instantly to a 150 kph bouncer, yet dense enough to clear the longest boundaries at the MCG without breaking a sweat."

He looked closely at the iconic green-and-white Kookaburra branding.

It felt right in his hands.

It felt like the weapon of a hunter.

"Please tell the executive team at Kookaburra that I am turning down their baseline offer," Rocky stated, turning to face his bewildered agent.

Bunty didn't care about his client age, he had already felt it. Rudra somehow always turn everything into correct and positive way.

So, he was willing to listen to his crazy ideas.

"Tell them I want a comprehensive five-year contract, my own exclusive signature line, and I want Shadow's sleek silhouette custom laser-engraved onto the spine of every single match bat I use on the international stage. If they agree to those exact terms, then Rocky Rudra is officially a Kookaburra man."

A brilliant grin spread across Bunty's face, the initial shock of the wolf completely replaced by the creative thrill of an absolute marketing masterstroke.

"A wolf-engraved Kookaburra... Rocky, you aren't just a natural-born cricketer. You are a branding genius." Bunty paused for a beat, his mind analyzing the possibilities.

"But they won't sign off on this overnight, Rocky. The Australian boardrooms are very traditional. Don't worry, though... I am going to handle the heavy negotiations personally and bring you the finalized contract."

"Stay sharp, stay updated, and remember...the IPL mega auction and the away series against New Zealand are coming up fast in February."

"Do not slack off on your training."

"Everything you've built relies on cricket, so don't stop here. Push boundaries and aim higher!"

Reminding Rudra about the high-stakes schedule ahead, Bunty hurriedly gathered the folders, checked his watch, and departed for his flight, leaving the Cyclone alone to prepare for the next storm.
