The Durban night was cool, but the atmosphere inside the private coastal villa overlooking the Indian Ocean remained electric.

Jacques Kallis, the man of the hour, had organized a farewell bash that felt remarkably less like a stiff corporate event and more like the iconic Shawarma scene at the end of The Avengers—a group of battle-worn warriors finally putting down their shields to share a meal.

The aromatic scent of a traditional South African Braai filled the air.

To respect the spirit of the occasion and the diverse cultural backgrounds of the players, the massive iron grill was loaded with succulent lamb chops, spicy lemon-herb chicken, Peri-Peri prawns, and grilled halloumi.

There wasn't a single trace of beef anywhere on the menu, ensuring everyone could enjoy the feast without a moment of hesitation.

As an old timer, Kallis was well aware of the subcontinent's dietary taboos.

So, he had informed the chefs beforehand to avoid them as not to make his guests uncomfortable.

___

In one corner of the moonlit deck, the scene felt right out of a high-society celebration.

Dale Steyn, holding a drink in one hand and a plate of lamb chops in the other, had his arm draped casually around Rocky Rudra's shoulders.

Dale Steyn: "I'm telling you, when that bat snapped clean in half, I thought I'd seen a ghost. You just stood there looking at the handle like it was a broken toy. Most guys would be visibly shaking out there. You just looked toward the dressing room and asked for a heavier piece of wood. You're either incredibly brave, son, or completely mad."

Rocky Rudra: (Grinning broadly) "Maybe a healthy dose of both, Dale. But honestly, I was just thinking about what Coach Amre would do to me if I let that ball deflect into my stumps. Trust me, the fear of his punishment is way more terrifying than the fear of a 156-click thunderbolt!"

AB de Villiers: (Joining the circle with a chuckle) "He's got that classic Ricky Ponting stare, Dale. I saw it clearly from mid-wicket. Rocky, if you ever get tired of breaking records in cricket, I think you've got a bright career waiting for you in Hollywood. You've got that James Bond cool-under-pressure vibe down perfectly."

The Generals' Table

Across the room, MS Dhoni and Jacques Kallis sat on plush leather sofas, looking like two retired generals discussing old military campaigns.

Virat Kohli stood nearby, gesturing animatedly as he recounted the tactical chaos of the final session.

Unfortunately, Graeme Smith had to rush home to attend to some private family matters, so Kallis took over his role.

Virat Kohli: "So I specifically told him in the middle, 'Rocky, just play your natural game, read the situation.' And what does he do? He goes out and tries to launch the number one bowler in world cricket for a massive six on the very second ball he faces! The boy completely lacks a defensive natural game. He only got an 'attack' mode!"

He's lying, isn't he? 🤣

I think he definitely said, "Show him his place, Rocky!"

Jacques Kallis: (Laughing heartily) "He reminds me so much of that bastard Punter. Zero respect for an international reputation. But you, Virat—you've got that Steve Waugh grit in your captaincy. Indian cricket is in phenomenal hands... Just promise me you'll give our boys a bit of a break when they tour India next year?"

MS Dhoni interjected with a subtle wink, swirling his drink.

"No promises, Jacques. But I can absolutely promise that the next time you guys visit India, we'll host a proper feast. No 150 km/h bouncers targeting the ribs, just hundred percent hospitality."

As the night progressed, the touring players were introduced to the famous Durban "Bunny Chow"—a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled to the brim with intensely spicy lamb and bean curry.

Before long, Ishant Sharma and Morne Morkel were locked in a "Tall Man's Contest," testing who could finish the fiery local dish without reaching for a glass of water first.

Morne Morkel: "You're already sweating, Ishant! The Durban bird's eye chili is finally getting to you!"

Ishant Sharma: "This is nothing, Morne! You should try the local street food in old Delhi. This is just a normal evening snack for me!"

Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin was spotted in a deep, technical discussion with Imran Tahir. Though it started as an analytical breakdown of leg-spin variations, it quickly devolved into relentless banter regarding Tahir's infamous celebration style.

R. Ashwin didn't minced his words at all. "Imran, I am fairly certain you ran more total kilometers during your wicket celebrations than you did in your actual bowling stride this entire series. I'm honestly surprised you didn't run all the way back to Johannesburg after that final review!"

Imran Tahir: (Waving his hands defensively) "Hey, when the umpire finally confirms it's a fair delivery and not a no-ball, I have to celebrate for all the ones he wrongly called earlier in the day! It's all about maintaining my cardio, Ash!"

The Farewell Toast

As the midnight hour approached, the background music dimmed, and the players instinctively gravitated toward the center of the deck, forming a loose circle around Jacques Kallis.

The moment carried the distinct weight of a final chapter in a classic sports novel—profoundly bittersweet, yet undeniably triumphant.

Virat Kohli stepped forward first, raising his glass high into the coastal air, his eyes locked on the legendary South African all-rounder.

Virat Kohli: "To Jacques... The greatest to ever do it! You forced all of us to become better cricketers simply because you set the standard so incredibly high. And to a hard-fought series that we will all be telling our grandkids about."

Rocky Rudra, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the seniors, lifted his own glass with a boyish grin, catching Dale Steyn's eye across the deck.

As the main guy behind the India's history winning in South Africa. Rudra had to honor the occasion and to show his respect to the legends attending the banquet.

Rocky Rudra: "To this beautiful game. And to the miraculous fact that I still have all my teeth intact after facing an angry Dale Steyn!"

The entire room erupted into a roaring cascade of cheers and clinking glasses.

The intense, white-hot rivalry that had defined the last ten days on the pitch dissolved completely. For this one night, political boundaries and team jerseys meant nothing... They were no longer divided into Indians or South Africans.

Instead, they were just a tight-knit fraternity celebrating a sport that had given them everything.

___

As the celebration slowly wound down and the chatter faded into the background, Rocky walked over to the edge of the wooden balcony, looking out at the endless expanse of stars reflecting over the dark Indian Ocean.

The contrast was really staggering.

Just a fortnight ago, he had arrived on South African soil as a relatively unknown teenager carrying nothing but an unfulfilled dream, with an unbranded piece of wood, and a desperate hope to make his family and country proud.

For him IPL serves as a breaking point, but it wasn't important as representing the country and that too, in the ultimate format.

Now, he was leaving these shores as a newly crowned giant of international cricket, carrying the hard-earned respect of his childhood idols and a legendary debut saga that would live forever in the history books.

The "Cuttack Cyclone" had officially made landfall, and the world would never be the same again.

___

The Durban sun hadn't quite cleared the horizon, leaving the private estate's training ground draped in a cool, silver mist.

For the first time in weeks, the heavy pressure of the scoreboard was entirely gone, replaced by the steady, rhythmic thud-thud of three pairs of running shoes striking the damp grass.

Virat Kohli was setting the pace at the front, his breathing perfectly measured, while MS Dhoni trailed slightly behind, simply enjoying the early morning quiet.

Rocky Rudra, still riding the immense high of the historic series victory, jogged effortlessly alongside them, his eyes scanning the perimeter of the lush green field.

Suddenly, Rocky skidded to a sharp halt near the edge of a cluster of mature acacia trees.

"Bhai, wait," he called out, his voice dropping to a hushed whisper.

Virat and Dhoni immediately circled back, wiping sweat from their brows.

"What happened, Chotu? Feeling a cramp?" Virat asked, his competitive, athletic edge always active.

"No... look over there," Rocky pointed directly toward the deep shadows of the tree line.

Staring back at them from the tall grass was a small, skeletal figure. It was a pup, likely no older than ten or twelve weeks, but it looked like a shadow that had temporarily taken physical form.

Its coat was a pure, midnight black, currently matted with damp dirt and dried leaves. Even in the dim twilight, its bones were painfully visible—the ribs etched sharply against its skin like a hollow cage.

"Oh man, look at him," Rocky whispered, his heart sinking at the sight.

"Poor guy looks like he hasn't eaten a single thing in a week. Is that a Husky? Or maybe a cross-breed with a German Shepherd?"

He took a slow step closer.

The creature didn't growl or snap, it simply tracked his movement with eyes that were a piercing, liquid amber, glowing like gold against the stark black of its fur.

It was beautiful in a haunting, wild way. Its fur, despite the dirt, possessed a thick, plush quality, particularly around the neck where a faint silver-grey undercoat was just beginning to peek through.

MS Dhoni, a well-known canine enthusiast with a famous pack of dogs back at his Ranchi farmhouse, narrowed his eyes.

He instantly noticed the unusual width of the pup's paws—disproportionately large for its current size—and the straight, bushy tail that completely lacked the standard domestic curl. He noted the sharp, triangular set of the ears and the specific way the creature refrained from wagging its tail, choosing instead to lower its entire body into a calculated crouch that felt far more ancient than domestic.

Dhoni shared a quick, silent glance with Virat. Virat's eyebrows shot up in immediate realization.

He recognized the signs too.

This was neither a stray Husky nor a crossbreed German shepherd at all.

This was a Melanistic Wolf pup, an incredibly rare, black-coated predator, likely separated from its pack or escaped from one of the nearby private wildlife sanctuaries.

Dhoni started to speak, intending to warn the teenager to step back, but he stopped mid-sentence the moment he caught Rocky's expression.

The "Cuttack Cyclone", who had just demolished the world's most lethal bowling attack on the pitch, was looking down at the starving animal with a gaze of protective empathy.

"He's just a helpless pup, Mahi Bhai," Rocky said softly, his voice full of concern. "Look at him. He's so terrified."

Rocky reached into his tracksuit pocket and pulled out a small plastic bag containing a few pieces of grilled chicken breast he'd saved for his early morning protein snack.

Keeping his movements slow and deliberate, he knelt down on the damp grass, ensuring he maintained a respectful distance so as to not startle the creature.

"Hey... hey, buddy. It's okay," Rocky murmured in a low, soothing voice.

He gently tossed a piece of the chicken onto the grass between them.

The pup didn't lung at it immediately.

True to its predatory heritage, it moved with a ghost-like grace, sniffing the air cautiously before stepping forward to delicately lift the meat.

After consuming the third piece, the animal crept entirely out of the shadows, its striking golden eyes remaining fixed directly on Rocky's face.

Finally, it advanced to eat directly from Rocky's open palm, its cold nose brushing against his skin.

Rudra with a massive grin breaking across his face, "Cheeku Bhai, he's actually quite soft. Look, his fur feels like velvet under all this dust. I'm telling you, he's a Husky-Shepherd mix. Look at the shape of those ears!"

Virat bit his lower lip, suppressing a sharp smile as he exchanged another look with Dhoni.

Virat Kohli: "Yeah... a very, very wild-looking Husky, Rocky."

Dhoni stepped closer, keenly analyzing the pup's behavior. It didn't display an ounce of standard domestic submissiveness, rather, it was very observant.

It wasn't looking for a master to take of him... It was trying to evaluate Rocky, as a partner...or perhaps, a friend.

After all, wolves are known for very fierce and loyal.

MS Dhoni: "Rocky, you know, if he doesn't have a collar and isn't microchipped... he's basically an orphan out here. And he is far too thin to survive in the brush on his own. The larger predators in the area will likely get to him by tonight."

Dhoni was deliberately exaggerating things as his eyes lingered on Rudra's face. He wanted to see what choice he would make.

Rocky looked down at the pup, who had now leaned its small, midnight-black head firmly against his knee.

It was a strange, instantaneous pull—the kind of instinctual bond that entirely bypassed logic.

"I can't leave him here to die, Mahi Bhai. We have two days left before our flight. I'll take him to a local vet first, check if anyone has reported a missing pup. If not..." He looked up at the two veterans, his jaw set. "I'm taking him back home to India. I'll figure out the quarantine paperwork. I don't care what the legal logistics cost."

Virat chuckled, shaking his head at the utter absurdity of the situation.

"You just won a historic Test series, shattered every record in the ancient books, and now you want to smuggle a... 'Husky' across international borders?"

"He chose me, Cheeku Bhai," Rocky said softly, reaching down to scoop up the surprisingly dense, heavy pup.

The animal didn't struggle or snap. Instead, it tucked its muzzle securely into the crook of Rocky's arm and let out a small, huffing breath of exhaustion.

Dhoni watched the scene unfold, a small, knowing smile playing on his lips.

He knew full well that in a few months, when this "Husky" matured into a hundred-pound black wolf with a piercing howl that could rattle the windows of a house, Rocky would have a massive amount of explaining to do to the wildlife authorities.

But for now, seeing the youngest hero of Indian cricket cradling the loneliest creature in Africa, the veteran captain decided to keep the secret safe.

MS Dhoni: "Well, we better get back to the villa and find him some real sustenance. And Rocky..."

"Keep him well away from your cricket kits. I have this feeling he might got a natural taste for leather."

Rocky laughed, cradling the black shadow securely in his arms as the three athletes turned back toward the estate.

He decided right then to call him 'Shadow.'

He remained entirely unaware that he hadn't merely adopted a pet.

He had brought a guardian into his life—a creature just as fierce, rare, and uncompromising as the boy who had found him in the mist.
