The atmosphere at Kingsmead fractured in a heartbeat.

One moment, the Indian camp was brimming with the quiet confidence of a team firmly in control and in the next, the "Durban Demon" awoke from its slumber, screaming through the afternoon air in the hands of Morne Morkel.

The shifting clouds seemed to heavy the air, trapping the tension down on the pitch like a physical weight.

___

Over 2: The Morkel Mayhem

Mark Nicholas: "Steyn set the tone with raw pace, but now here comes the giant. Morne Morkel. He extracts that steepling bounce from a length that can make the finest batsmen in the world look like scrambling schoolboys. This is exactly where a modest target of 130 starts looking like a daunting 200."

Ball 1.1 (146.5 km/h):

Morkel hits the deck hard, extracting a vicious, chest-high bounce short of a length. Rocky Rudra rises effortlessly with the movement, absorbing the impact with remarkably soft hands to drop the ball directly into the turf at his feet. He calls for a sharp, instinctive single, scurrying to the non-striker's end with an urgent sprint before the point fielder can even take a step.

India 2nd Innings: 6/0 (1.1 Overs)

Target: 130

Rocky Rudra: 6* (6b)

Murali Vijay: 0* (1b)

Ball 1.2 (147.8 km/h):

Morkel immediately sets his sights on Murali Vijay, unleashing a classic, lethal Durban delivery. It is pitched up full, enticing the classic cover drive, but it jags away late and sharp under the heavy overcast skies. Vijay lunges forward, his bat trailing a fraction of a second behind the lateral movement.

The ball takes a thick outside edge and flies low to Graeme Smith at first slip, who plucks it inches from the grass.

WICKET: Murali Vijay c Smith b Morkel 0 (2b)

India 2nd Innings: 6/1 (1.2 Overs)

Mark Nicholas: "GONE! HE'S GONE! Smith rarely drops those inside the cordon! Murali Vijay walks back for a two-ball duck, and South Africa has the early breakthrough they so desperately craved!"

Shaun Pollock: "Look at that celebration, Mark! That is the fierce South African unit we know. They are also hunting in a pack now. Vijay looks absolutely devastated, but he was completely undone by the spectacular late shape on that ball."

The broadcast camera panned tightly to Rocky Rudra.

He completely ignored the roaring, high-fiving Proteas huddle gathering in the center of the square. Instead, he stood like a statue beside the non-striker's stumps, slowly pulling off his gloves to wipe his damp palms on his trousers, his expression entirely was hard to read.

Nobody could tell what he was thinking currently.

Cheteshwar Pujara was already making his way down the pavilion steps, but Rocky's gaze remained fixed on the surface, analyzing the crack that had caused the movement.

He was the undisputed anchor of this pursuit now, and he knew he could not afford a single moment of carelessness at this critical juncture.

Now, the dynamic of the chase had fundamentally altered with the Proteas gaining the early momentum.

Even though India had another Day left to chase this comfortably, it won't be that easy with the way this pitch had been behaving.

According to coaching staff's judgement, from tomorrow on, it would get extremely difficult to bat, so they had to capitalise early with what left for the batters.... This was the consensus of both Kohli and Rudra too.

___

Cheteshwar Pujara walked out to a deafening roar from the South African fans, the stadium sensing a sudden shift in the wind.

He met Rocky in the middle of the pitch, the two batsmen convening over a surface that was rapidly deteriorating.

Rocky while glove-bumping Pujara, spoke up to remind him, "Bhaiya, be careful. The ball is coming a bit late off the pitch, but it's jumping. Watch the extra bounce from this end, it's spongier than Steyn's end. Don't commit forward too early."

Pujara nodded solemnly, his eyes narrowed, "I see it. I'll grind them down. Just stay there with me. We only need small partnerships."

Over 2: The Continuation

Ball 1.3 (145.8 km/h):

Morkel re-starts from over the wicket, angling a fierce, back-of-a-length delivery into the channel just outside off-stump. Pujara judges the line instantly, lifting his bat high above his shoulder with statuesque calm, allowing the ball to sail through to AB de Villiers.

Mark Nicholas: "Classic Pujara to begin. No drama, no unnecessary movement. He is exactly the ice India needs to pour over this South African fire right now."

Ball 1.4 (146.2 km/h):

Morkel goes slightly fuller this time, targeting the corridor of uncertainty. The ball pitches and jags back a fraction, whistling past the off-stump as Pujara offers another deliberate, rock-solid leave, his eyes tracking the red leather into the keeper's webbing.

Shaun Pollock: "That's a beautiful line from Morne, just testing the judgment. Pujara is playing with his hands close to his body, refusing to nibble at anything he doesn't absolutely have to play."

Ball 1.5 (147.5 km/h):

Morkel hits a heavier length, extracting a sharp, steep bounce that climbs rapidly toward the batsman's chest. Pujara adjusts dynamically, dropping his hands completely beneath the line of the ball and letting it thud heavily into de Villiers' gloves.

Pommie Mbangwa: "You can see the extra bounce we were talking about earlier. It just climbs from a length. But Pujara handles it beautifully, riding the wave rather than fighting it."

Ball 1.6 (148.2 km/h):

Morkel produces a literal unplayable delivery to finish the over. He lands the ball perfectly on a good length, where it strikes a prominent surface crack and explodes off the deck. The ball flies up violently, catching the shoulder of Pujara's bat as he desperately tries to defend his face.

It loops gently into the waiting hands of Hashim Amla at a crouching short-leg position.

WICKET: Cheteshwar Pujara c Amla b Morkel 0 (4b)

India 2nd Innings: 6/2 (2.0 Overs) Target: 130 runs.

Rocky Rudra: 6* (6 balls, 1x4)

Mark Nicholas: (Voice reaching a crescendo) "I DON'T BELIEVE IT! TWO IN THE OVER! India are reeling at 6 for 2! The fortress is fighting back with a vengeance! This is the South Africa that has dominated world cricket for a decade—relentless, clinical, and absolutely terrifying!"

Shaun Pollock: "Pujara is utterly stunned, he's just staring at the pitch. He did everything right technically, Mark, but you simply cannot play the cracks. When the pitch behaves like that, you are entirely at the mercy of fate. India are in a world of trouble here."

The Kingsmead crowd was in a state of absolute euphoria, a wall of noise cascading down from the stands as Pujara slowly turned to begin the long walk back to the pavilion.

Rocky Rudra remained rooted at the non-striker's end, his bat resting against his pad.

The scorecard read an ominous 6/2. He looked toward the dressing room balcony, waiting to see who would emerge next into the cauldron.

The 130-run target that looked so insignificant before, had transformed into a mountain they had no choice except to climb.

___

In the Commentary Box: The Looming Shadow

Inside the commentary box, the air was dense, thick with the realization that the entire landscape of the series had cracked open in a matter of minutes.

Mark Nicholas: "The tension is really unbearable now. India have gone from what looked like a comfortable afternoon stroll to an absolute survival mission in the space of just six balls. Everything now rests squarely on the shoulders of the two men who have defined this entire tour. If South Africa can somehow pry out Rudra or Kohli in the next half-hour, this Test match is done and dusted."

Pommie Mbangwa: "I am in complete agreement with you there, Mark. These two wickets represent the 'Gold Standard' for the Proteas. Rudra is playing in the form of his life, and Kohli is... well, he's Virat Kohli. They are the solitary barrier standing between South Africa and an unprecedented, historic series defeat on home soil."

Shaun Pollock: "Just look down at the Indian dugout. MS Dhoni is already fully padded up, his face looking incredibly grim. The vocal Indian supporters who were cheering moments ago have gone completely silent. They realize right now that chasing 130 on this shifting, unpredictable pitch is going to be a brutal, bloody climb."

___

As Pujara trudged off into the shadows of the pavilion, the King of Indian cricket, Virat Kohli, descended the wooden steps.

The atmosphere inside Kingsmead was so heavily charged with adrenaline it felt as though the very air might catch fire.

He didn't spare a single glance toward the roaring crowd, his eyes were locked entirely on the surface ahead.

He met Rocky at the center of the pitch.

For a brief, powerful moment, they simply stood there, helmet to helmet, nodding slowly at one another. It was a silent, unyielding pact born of utter necessity: We cannot let this slip from our grasps.

Virat Kohli: (Voice low, cutting through the background noise) "It's just us now. No more mistakes. No more freebies. We've got four sessions left, we don't need to hurry."

"Take risks or leave the balls... Trust your feeling."

Rocky Rudra: (Nodding firmly, his grip tightening on his bat) "I've got your back, Virat bhaiya. Let's just take it run by run, ball by ball."

Over 3: The Ultimate Confrontation

Mark Nicholas: "The third over is about to begin, and the drama has reached a fever pitch. Rocky Rudra turns to face the music at the striker's end. Dale Steyn is already standing at the top of his mark, the red ball clutched in his hand like a jagged stone. The 'Cyclone' versus the 'Phantom.' This is Test cricket at its absolute zenith."

CURRENT MATCH SITUATION:

India 2nd Innings: 6/2 (2.0 Overs)

Target: 130

Rocky Rudra: 6* (6b 1x4)

Virat Kohli: 0* (0b)

[ India needs 124 more runs to win ]

____

The atmosphere at Kingsmead reached a fever pitch. With the scoreboard reading an ominous 6/2, the air grew thick with the sharp scent of coastal saltwater and impending disaster for the Indian side.

Yet, as Rocky Rudra tapped his bat into the crease, he didn't look like a man buckling under pressure.

He looked like a man about to start a goddamned war.

Over 3: The Phalaborwa Express vs. The Cyclone

Mark Nicholas: "The world's number one fast bowler versus the world's most talked-about teenager. Steyn looks like he wants to bowl a hole right through the boy. Just this moment transcends the sport now... We are moving into pure gladiatorial territory."

Ball 2.1 (156.4 km/h):

Steyn charges in, a blur of white clothing and unbridled aggression. He unleashes a thunderbolt right on a perfect length, targeting the top of off-stump. Rocky gets forward decisively to defend, meeting the ball with a perfectly solid face.

Then came a sickening crack!—not the sweet sound of leather meeting willow, but the sharp, violent noise of wood splintering under extreme force.

The bottom half of Rocky's bat sheared off completely, spinning through the air toward the square-leg umpire before thudding onto the grass.

Mark Nicholas: (Screaming into his microphone) "HE HAS BROKEN THE BAT! THE SPEED! THE RAW, UNADULTERATED POWER! Dale Steyn has literally shattered the willow of the man of the occasion, Rocky Rudra! Kingsmead has completely erupted!"

Shaun Pollock: "Look at the shards of wood scattered across the pitch! 156.4 kilometers per hour of pure fury! Steyn isn't backing down an inch today—he is right in the youngster's face now!"

Dale Steyn stalked down the pitch, the veins in his neck popping, his face flushed red with adrenaline as he glared down at the young batsman.

Dale Steyn: "You like that, kid? That English willow was too soft for me. The next one is taking your off-stump. I'm going to break you, not just your bat... Get ready for more."

Rocky looked down at the jagged handle remaining in his hands, completely unfazed by the eruption around him or the bowler's words.

He casually dropped the broken piece of willow onto the turf, raised his eyes, and looked Steyn dead in the face.

But Rocky didn't say a word back to Steyn.

His gaze already shifting toward the boundary rope where the substitutes were scrambling with replacements.

Then, Ravichandran Ashwin jogged out from the dugout, carrying three fresh bats tucked under his arms.

As Rocky stepped away from the crease to inspect the wood, the commentary team picked up on a striking detail through the close-up cameras.

Pommie Mbangwa: "Wait a minute... Wait a minute, take a look at those bats Ashwin has brought out. There are no stickers. No sponsors. Absolutely blank faces... Oh my word! To think we didn't even notice this earlier. Such a dereliction of duty...Rocky Rudra is actually playing with completely unbranded wood in the middle of the most historic debut series the game has seen in a very long time!"

Mark Nicholas: "You're spot on, Pommie! After this series, every major sports brand from Melbourne to Mumbai is going to be knocking down his door with a blank check. He is arguably the most valuable property in world cricket right now, and he's out there doing it entirely on his own terms."

Rocky selected a dense, heavy piece of Grade-1 English willow with a thick profile.

He tapped the toe against the ground, gave it a couple of fierce practice swings to gauge the balance, and nodded in satisfaction before signaling to his partner.

They met halfway up the pitch for a firm, resonant glove-bump.

As expected, Virat Kohli was practically vibrating with intense, competitive energy.

He was completely fired up.

Virat Kohli: (Grip tightening on his own bat, eyes blazing) "Give it right back to him, Rocky! No backing down! Show him exactly who the boss is out here!"

Rocky didn't answer with words.

He just gave Kohli a sharp nod and turned back toward the crease.

He took his stance once more, gripping the unbranded handle tightly, ready for the remaining five balls of Steyn's high-octane over.

___

Ball 2.2 (153.2 km/h):

Steyn tries to replicate the exact trajectory of the previous delivery—full, rapid, and fiercely threatening. But the new, unbranded bat handles like a magic wand. Rocky drops deep into his crease, his hands flashing in a blur of vintage, that Punter-style aggression.

Picking the length in a microsecond, he unleashed a magnificent, short-arm jab over mid-wicket.

The ball disappeared deep into the upper tiers of the grandstand.

SIX RUNS.

Mark Nicholas: "OH, HE'S SMASHED IT! A near-identical line to the first ball, but the result is six! Rocky Rudra has just slapped the world's best fast bowler straight into the stands! The sheer audacity of this young man!"

Shaun Pollock: "That is pure Ricky Ponting! The way he stayed perfectly upright, the high elbow, the utter disdain for extreme pace! Virat Kohli is literally jumping in the air at the non-striker's end!"

Ball 2.3 (150.8 km/h):

Visibly rattled by the maximum, Steyn overcompensates and pushes the line wider outside off-stump. Rocky leans into the delivery, executing a glorious, textbook cover drive. Melding flawless timing with raw power, the ball screams past the diving extra-cover fielder and thuds against the foam advertising boards in a heartbeat.

Mark Nicholas: "FOUR MORE! He is putting on an absolute clinic here! Steyn is searching for answers, and Rudra is providing only boundaries!"

FOUR RUNS.

Scorecard: 16/2 (2.3 overs)

Ball 2.4 (149.5 km/h):

Steyn hits the deck hard, shortening his length and forcing a bit of extra bounce outside off. Rocky cuts aggressively across the line but misses as the ball whizzes past the edge. Steyn lets out a roar of frustration, but the teenager ignores it, calmly stepping away to reset his stance.

Ball 2.5 (148.2 km/h):

Steyn delivers a beautiful, probing out-swinger that lands on a perfect dragging length. Rocky tracks it like a hawk, keeping his hands tightly tucked close to his body and letting it carry cleanly through to AB de Villiers.

Ball 2.6 (154.6 km/h):

Losing his cool entirely, Steyn charges in and digs a vicious, rib-crushing bouncer into the pitch. It is his ultimate weapon, a literal "death ball." Rocky refuses to duck or sway away. Standing his ground, he rolls his wrists into a hook shot so violent that the sharp crack of contact echoes around the stadium. The ball didn't merely cleared the ropes, it cleared the entire stadium roof.

SIX RUNS.

Mark Nicholas: (Voice cracking with excitement) "OVER THE ROOF! ANOTHER SIX! Rocky Rudra is completely dismantling Dale Steyn! He has countered the ultimate South African aggression with a explosion of his own! The local crowd has gone stone silent... you could hear a pin drop in Durban right now!"

Shaun Pollock: "Just look at Steyn's reaction. He's kicking the turf in sheer disbelief. He is completely livid. He gave that delivery everything he had left in the tank—154 clicks on the speed gun—and the kid treated it like a routine practice session. This is tit-for-tat aggression at its absolute finest."

END OF OVER 3: India 22/2 (Target: 130)

Rocky Rudra: 22* (12b 2x4 2x6)

Virat Kohli: 0* (0b)

___

The Commentary Box: The Ghost of Punter

Inside the broadcasting booth, the commentators were struggling to find words to match the sheer gravity of what they had just witnessed.

The tactical chessboard had been blown to pieces in the space of a single over.

Mark Nicholas: "I have to say it, Shaun...Pommie. Watching Rocky Rudra out there today... it truly feels as though that Tasmanian legend, Ricky Ponting, hasn't actually retired. It feels as if Punter simply changed his nationality, put on an Indian jersey, and grew a few inches. The authoritative pull, the dismissive hook, that terrifying, unblinking glare back at the bowler—it is all right there before our eyes."

Pommie Mbangwa: "He is a living nightmare for fast bowlers, Mark. If you bowl express pace, he uses your momentum against you. If you sledge him, he simply dispatches you into the upper tiers for six. He possesses the unyielding arrogance of a champion and the supreme technical skill required to back it up. 130 was the target when they walked out, but with Rocky in this kind of mood, he makes it look like 13."

Shaun Pollock: "The over is finally done, and what a chaotic ride it was. Sixteen runs blasted off it, dragging India to 22 for 2. The momentum of this entire Test match has swung right back to the visitors like a heavy pendulum. Dale Steyn is walking back to his fielding position at fine-leg, totally fuming and cursing at himself, while Kohli and Rudra are just sharing a quiet laugh in the middle of the pitch. The psychological shift is complete."

MATCH STATUS: END OF OVER 3

India: 22/2 (Target: 130, Required: 108 runs to win.)

CURRENT PARTNERSHIP: 16 runs off 6 balls.

Rocky Rudra: 22* (12b, 2x4, 2x6)

Virat Kohli: 0* (0b)
