Chapter 218: Could This Man See the Future?
"Hahahahaha...!"
Watching Crocodile recite the Three Character Classic with deadly seriousness while wearing the same icy expression of someone owed tens of billions of Beli, Kairo couldn't hold it in anymore and burst into laughter again.
Although the current Crocodile hadn't yet displayed the domineering aura he had in the original story, he was still one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea—a man who had once challenged the World's Strongest Man. Yet here he was, standing in the middle of the desert, solemnly reciting the Three Character Classic.
The scene was simply too hilarious.
In the original story, whether it was Mihawk, Crocodile, or even the far more tragic Bartholomew Kuma, they were all the cold, stoic type.
Mihawk had already been thoroughly led astray by Kairo's rock-paper-scissors back in the East Blue.
Now it looked like Crocodile was about to be completely ruined by the Three Character Classic as well.
Standing off to the side, Robin couldn't help but smile and shake her head when she saw Kairo laughing so hard himself.
Just as she'd expected, another member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea had fallen into the enormous pit Kairo had dug for them.
But what surprised Robin the most wasn't that.
It was the way both Mihawk and Crocodile had reacted to Kairo.
From what she knew of the two Warlords, both were fiercely independent people who almost never changed themselves for anyone else.
Yet after meeting Kairo, Mihawk had completely let loose—playing rock-paper-scissors with him, even shouting strange phrases without a care.
And now Crocodile, simply because he had lost a wager, was honestly following Kairo in reciting something Robin had never even heard of before.
Everything confirmed her earlier suspicion.
There was something strangely magical about Kairo.
Without anyone realizing it, he gradually influenced everyone around him.
Even now, despite Kairo laughing uncontrollably, Crocodile didn't find anything wrong with it.
Instead, he merely frowned deeply as he struggled to recall the next lines of the Three Character Classic.
Amid Kairo's laughter, Crocodile finally remembered the remaining passage and continued reciting with an utterly serious expression.
"...Diligence brings achievement, while indulgence in play brings no benefit. Take this warning to heart..."
The moment Crocodile finished the final passage, the system's voice rang out in Kairo's mind.
Notification: Congratulations, Host. You have successfully completed the mission of defeating Crocodile and teaching him to recite the Three Character Classic. Current mission progress: 1/3.
"Wow! You're amazing, Crocodile!"
Perona, who had been trying to memorize the Three Character Classic along with him, pouted dejectedly.
"Why couldn't I remember all of it..."
"If you like it that much, I'll teach it to you properly later."
Hearing the system notification, Kairo was in an excellent mood. He gently rubbed Perona's head before turning to Crocodile.
"The game's over."
"Crocodile, would you like to travel with us to Alubarna, or shall we part ways here?"
"...?"
Hearing Kairo say that the game was over, Crocodile blinked blankly.
At first, he had assumed Kairo was deliberately making things difficult for him.
But now...
He realized he had overthought it.
This guy had really just been playing a game.
With that realization, Crocodile suddenly became curious about Kairo.
"...Are you really... just a traveler?"
Hearing the question, Kairo narrowed his eyes slightly.
"Do you think I have any need to disguise myself?"
"Well then."
Without waiting for Crocodile to respond, Kairo stood up and cupped his fists politely.
"This is where we part, Crocodile."
"If fate allows, we'll meet again."
Crocodile didn't leave immediately.
Instead, he watched Kairo without blinking.
Only after seeing Kairo truly preparing to leave with Perona and Robin did he suddenly call out,
"Wait!"
"Hm?"
Kairo stopped and turned around.
"I think..."
"We could become friends."
Walking over to Kairo, Crocodile continued,
"Allow me to introduce myself again."
"I'm Crocodile."
"If you don't mind, once we reach Alubarna, I'd like to treat the three of you to a drink."
Looking at the Crocodile standing before him, Kairo slowly narrowed his eyes.
Then he calmly dropped a bombshell.
"My Observation Haki doesn't merely allow me to predict an opponent's next move in battle."
"It also lets me hear what's in their heart."
The instant those words fell, Crocodile's pupils contracted sharply.
His face was filled with shock.
However, only a moment later, he regained his composure and asked doubtfully,
"You can hear other people's thoughts?"
"You want me to join your organization, don't you?"
Kairo smiled and shook his head.
"I'm more curious."
"How long has your organization existed?"
"...It was only just established."
Although Kairo had accurately guessed what he was thinking, Crocodile reacted with astonishing calm.
"At present, I'm the only member."
"I sincerely hope you'll join forces with me."
"It was only just established...?"
Kairo blinked in surprise before Crocodile could continue.
So he's still a one-man operation?
With that thought, Kairo looked at him seriously.
"Crocodile."
"Let me give you one piece of advice."
"No matter what it is you're trying to obtain..."
"In the end, you'll come away empty-handed."
"You can take that as advice from a friend."
With those words, Kairo turned and strode away with Perona and Robin.
Meanwhile, Crocodile remained rooted to the spot, completely stunned.
This man not only knew what he was thinking...
He even knew what he intended to do?
His plan had only just begun to take shape. It wasn't even complete yet.
To this day, no one but himself knew anything about it.
Yet from Kairo's words...
It was obvious he not only knew Crocodile's plan—
He even knew exactly what Crocodile was after.
Could it be...
This man doesn't merely hear people's thoughts...
He can see the future?
The thought made Crocodile suck in a sharp breath.
As he watched Kairo's departing figure, his eyes filled with unprecedented fear.
Kairo wasn't actually leaving the area just yet.
There was still one more thing he intended to do.
He was going to find the Kung Fu Dugongs.
According to the original story, the Kung Fu Dugongs lived along the coast of the Alabasta Kingdom.
As long as he found them, his second mission would practically complete itself.
Just imagining rows upon rows of Kung Fu Dugongs following him through the Eighth Set of Radio Calisthenics made Kairo want to laugh.
This mission existed purely for fun.
Very fitting for a Traveler indeed.
