Chapter 96: Sea Of Consciousness
Their questions landed at the same time.
"Okay," Zephyr said with a sigh. "I saw your maid when I was coming back from the academy and she told me you were back, so I came to check on you."
"Oh," Azrael muttered with a chuckle.
"So, the blood?" Zephyr asked again, quieter this time.
He knew how dimensional beast blood looked, and this was definitely not that color.
"Don’t worry about it," Azrael waved it off.
Zephyr squinted his gaze.
A thought popped into his mind, but he let it go.
It was not like there was anything inherently wrong with killing.
At least, that was what he assumed it was.
"Well, bye then," Zephyr said. "Seems like you have some cleaning up to do."
"Yeah. I might come by the academy tomorrow."
Zephyr turned back.
"We are on a one week break," Zephyr replied.
’Seems like it was not just me then,’ Azrael thought.
"Don’t worry, I will drop by here tomorrow morning," Zephyr said with a wink.
He opened the door at the same time.
"Don’t ever come back to my room uninvited. It is too weird," Azrael said.
But Zephyr had already left before the words finished.
Azrael’s eyes lingered on the door for a moment before he looked away.
"Really weird," Azrael said.
He pulled his clothes off and walked into the bathroom.
Earlier he had forgotten about the blood entirely, which was why he had let Zephyr come in without noticing.
Soon the sound of gushing water followed.
A few minutes later, a knock came from the door.
Azrael was sure it was Clara.
"Come in," he called from the bathroom.
The door creaked open softly and Clara stepped inside.
She carried herself with an allure that said otherwise of her status as a maid.
She set the food on the table she had brought along, then left the room.
As his maid, it was her duty to always respect Azrael’s privacy.
As she stepped out, Azrael walked out of the bathroom.
A crimson towel was wrapped around his waist.
The aroma of the food hit his nose, but there was little reaction from him.
It smelled nice, maybe better than most things in this world.
But after two years of meals cooked by Jasmine’s house, Azrael knew he was going to remain dissatisfied for a long time.
That food was simply on another level.
He dressed quickly and walked toward the table.
’Why does she always serve me so little?’ Azrael wondered as he looked at the plate before him.
Although he was not someone who ate much, the portion still felt small.
He shrugged and continued eating.
Time passed and the clink of the spoon hitting the plate finally stopped.
"Clara," he called lightly.
There was no need to raise his voice. Clara was always just outside his door.
The door clicked open and Clara walked in, bowing slightly before rolling the trolley away.
"That is that," Azrael muttered before leaning back into the bed.
He rested against the headboard.
’System,’ he said.
[You want to check your Sea of Consciousness now?] The system asked directly.
Azrael nodded.
[Whatever you do, before you die, just free me so I can find a better host.]
Azrael’s brow twitched.
’You know this is not dangerous, right?’ Azrael replied.
[I am talking about the future. You are about to enter that tournament, especially the Ascension Tower.]
The system replied with a sigh emoji.
"Ascension Tower?" Azrael asked with raised brows.
[Do not worry about it.]
"Weirdo," Azrael said, not entirely intentionally.
[Is this not a case of the pot calling the kettle black?]
Azrael did not reply.
He let his body come to rest and began to descend inward.
Nausea built up as he felt the pull.
It was faster than anything he had ever moved at physically. It felt as though his consciousness had been yanked out of his body entirely.
Then the feeling disappeared as if it had never been there.
Azrael opened his eyes slowly to behold the sight before him.
"No matter how many times I experience this, I do not think I will ever get used to it," he muttered to himself.
This was his Sea of Consciousness.
A silver expanse spread infinitely below him.
Its depth and size disappeared into the horizon.
Shining stars lined the sky, creating an image beautiful enough to hold anyone still just by looking at it.
The world was calm, gentle, and serene.
Slowly, he began to descend.
The water solidified as he neared, forming a solid surface for him to land on.
Even in solid form, ripples spread outward from beneath his feet.
His reflection stared back at him clearly.
"I can now last more than ten minutes," Azrael muttered with a smile.
From the one minute he could manage three months ago when he first broke through, he had reached ten.
He did not dwell on it.
"Now, for the main reason I came here."
He looked up at the stars in the sky and sighed.
The Sea of Consciousness was an overpowered ability hidden behind a ridiculous amount of work.
And he had barely started.
To access the abilities of the Sea of Consciousness, the user needed to destroy the star that represented each ability.
He looked at the one he was already halfway through destroying.
"Hopefully I can finish it in the time I have left," Azrael muttered before launching into the sky.
His essence surged, reducing his weight to the lowest possible.
Flames, lightning, and light flared along his arm, forming an imprint as he drove his fist directly into the star.
Explosions rang out as a massive chunk of it was reduced to debris.
Everything disappeared before it could drift downward.
Before Azrael pulled back, the space around the star had already condensed to a singularity point.
The area vanished within a breath.
Azrael heaved as he stared at what remained.
"Zareth," Azrael said, opening his palm.
White flames erupted along his hand, streaking downward as they condensed into something solid.
A katana.
Sleek and white.
An edge that seemed sharper than anything that existed or was permitted to exist in reality.
Just beneath its hilt, a single eye rested, unopened, as if waiting for the perfect moment to reveal itself.
Then a voice.
Hoarse, but ancient, as if carrying the weight of thousands of civilizations within it.
"I thought you would never call."
