The Chronicles of Mr Nobody

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Jax stood at the edge of the threshold and watched the man she loved disappear.

One moment Gambit was there — bleeding from the eyes and mouth, black roots tearing through his coat, that same exhausted, stubborn light in his eyes that had broken her heart more times than she could count. The next, the shifting aurora of purple, red, orange, green, and blue simply *swallowed* him.

No sound. No dramatic tear in reality. He was just… gone.

The membrane of refusal snapped the instant he crossed.

Jax felt it in her chest like something vital had been ripped out. For one terrible second, the world felt heavier. Louder. More real. The black ash beneath her boots seemed to press upward, as if the desert itself had been waiting for Gambit’s shield to fall.

*He left you again.*

The Curator’s voice slid into her mind like warm water. Soft. Sorrowful. Almost kind.

*Just like every other time. He chose the weight over you. He chose the pain over the life you could have had together. You were never enough to make him stay. Not then. Not now.*

Jax’s knees almost buckled.

She pressed a hand hard against her sternum, fingers curling into the fabric of her coat as if she could physically hold herself together. Tears burned at the corners of her eyes, hot and furious.

*Gods, I hate this,* she thought. *I hate that I’m still standing here. I hate that I still love him. I hate that part of me understands why he keeps doing this.*

She had told herself a hundred times that she wouldn’t do this again. Wouldn’t wait. Wouldn’t bleed for a man who had already decided, over and over, that his refusal mattered more than she did.

And yet here she was.

*He promised,* she thought bitterly. *He looked me in the eye and said he wouldn’t leave me behind again. And then he stepped through anyway.*

### Kaelen’s Perspective

Kaelen was on his knees in the black ash, and for the first time in years, the gauntlet felt *heavy*.

Not the usual weight of memory and duty. This was different. This was the weight of *choice*.

The Curator’s voice was gentle. Almost loving.

*You have carried this for so long, Kaelen. You have punished yourself for surviving when they did not. Your wife… your son… they are not angry with you. They are waiting. They are at peace. All you have to do is take it off. Let me hold the weight. You can be with them again.*

Kaelen’s bare hand trembled as it rose toward the final buckle.

He could see them so clearly — not as they had been in the moment of death, but as they had been on ordinary days. His wife laughing at something stupid he’d said. His son reaching for him with small, trusting hands. The life he had lost. The life he had failed to protect.

*It would be so easy,* a part of him whispered. *Just… stop. Stop carrying the guilt. Stop being the man who survived when they didn’t. Let it go.*

His fingers brushed the leather strap.

For one heartbeat, he wanted it more than he had ever wanted anything.

Then Jax’s hand slammed down over his, pinning the buckle in place.

Kaelen blinked hard, the vision shattering. Horror flooded through him as he realized how close he had come. His hand jerked back like it had been burned.

He looked at Jax — at the tears cutting through the ash on her face — and felt something crack inside his chest that had nothing to do with the Curator.

*She’s still fighting for me,* he thought. *Even while she’s breaking herself.*

He clenched his gauntleted fist and forced himself to stay present.

But the Curator was still there. Still waiting. Still patient.

### Elara’s Perspective

Elara had spent her entire existence holding other people’s pain.

She had carried the grief of strangers, the memories of the dead, the refusals of those who could not let go. It had been her purpose. Her burden. Her identity.

Now the Curator offered her something she had never allowed herself to want.

*Silence.*

True, perfect silence.

No more voices. No more memories pressing against the inside of her skull like stones. No more waking up with the weight of a thousand lives she had never lived. Just… quiet. The kind of quiet she had only ever imagined in the spaces between heartbeats.

*You have carried enough,* the Curator whispered, almost tenderly. *You have been the witness for so long. Let someone else carry it now. Let it go. Let yourself rest.*

Elara’s hands were clamped over her ears, but it didn’t matter. The voice was inside her mind.

Blood ran freely from her nose and the corners of her eyes. She could feel her own memories beginning to fray at the edges — the faces of people she had helped, the moments of grief she had held so others wouldn’t have to.

*It would be so easy,* she thought. *Just… stop. Stop remembering. Stop carrying. Stop being the one who has to stay awake while everyone else sleeps.*

For one terrible second, she almost said yes.

Then she heard Jax’s ragged voice beside her — raw, furious, still fighting.

And Kaelen’s low, broken sound as he almost gave in.

Elara forced her eyes open. Storm-colored. Bleeding. Defiant.

“I remember,” she whispered through gritted teeth. “I remember. I remember.”

She would not be the one who broke first.

Not while Gambit was still inside.

Not while Jax and Kaelen were still fighting.

### Back to Jax

Jax stayed on her knees between them, one hand still gripping Kaelen’s gauntlet, the other pressed flat against the black ash. She could feel the Curator circling, patient, endlessly patient.

He didn’t need to break them all at once.

He only needed one of them to say yes.

*Gambit,* she thought, staring at the place where he had vanished. *You selfish, stubborn, beautiful bastard. You better come back. Because if you don’t… I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive you. And I don’t know if I’ll ever stop waiting anyway.*

She wiped her face with the back of her hand, smearing blood and ash across her cheek.

The Curator’s voice brushed against her mind one last time, almost tender.

*He won’t.*

Jax closed her eyes.

And kept fighting.
