Chapter 177: Inventory Dump
The System obligingly ejected every single item he had accumulated over the last forty-eight hours in a single, cascading wave. The chests appeared first: Silver, Gold, Platinum. They tumbled out of the air, stacking and scattering across the floor in a pile of glowing metal.
The Silver Chests came first. Eleven of them. Each one was the size of a shoebox, made of pale silver metal with a clasp on the front. They glowed with a soft white light that cast shifting patterns across the ceiling.
Then the Gold Chests. Seven. Larger than the Silver, heavier, and made of deep gold metal that radiated warmth. The light they gave off was richer and warmer, almost honey-colored.
Then the Platinum Chests. Three of them, two from the midnight farm and one from the Siege Turtle. They sat on top of the pile like crowns, each one the size of a large book and made of a metal so bright it looked like frozen starlight.
The Aether Crystal crates came next. Twelve wooden boxes stamped with the Vanguard military seal, stacked in the corner. The blue glow from the crystals inside leaked through the cracks in the wood.
Finally came the miscellaneous loot: pouches of underworld coin, uncut gemstones, and weapon components. They spilled across the floor in a messy pile of leather, metal, and glittering stone.
Holden stood in front of the pile and looked at it.
"Alright." He cracked his knuckles. "Let’s see what we’ve got."
pop. pop. pop.
He reached for the first Silver Chest and flipped the clasp.
click.
The lid popped open. A column of soft white light shot upward, and inside the chest was a scroll. He pulled it out and unrolled it.
[Skill Manual: Phantom-Step (Rank 1) acquired!]
[Description: A movement technique that creates a brief afterimage of the user. Effective for dodging and misdirection.]
"Nice." He set it aside. "Next."
click.
[Healing Pill x3 acquired!]
[Description: Restores 30% of physical damage when consumed. Cooldown: 1 hour.]
click.
[Weapon Upgrade Material: Tempered Steel Shard x5 acquired!]
[Description: Can be fused with any Rank 1 or Rank 2 weapon to increase edge sharpness by 40%.]
click. click. click. click.
He opened them in rapid-fire.
[Skill Manual: Iron Palm (Rank 2) acquired!]
[Healing Pill x5 acquired!]
[Energy Restoration Pill x4 acquired!]
[Weapon Upgrade Material: Aether-Infused Leather x3 acquired!]
[Skill Manual: Thunder Breathing (Rank 1) acquired!]
[Tactical Item: Smoke Ward x2 acquired!]
The pile of loot on the floor grew. Scrolls, pill bottles, glowing shards of metal, and leather strips humming with energy. Each item was useful. None of them were game-changing on their own, but together they represented a massive stockpile of resources that would take a normal squad months to accumulate.
The Silver Chests were done. Eleven opened, eleven rewards claimed.
He turned to the Gold Chests.
The first one was warm in his hands. He flipped the clasp.
click.
[Skill Manual: Gale-Step Enhancement Scroll acquired!]
[Description: Can be used to push Gale-Step from Ultimate to Transcendent tier. Adds a short-range teleportation effect.]
Holden stared at the scroll. His Gale-Step was already Ultimate tier. The hidden ceiling was Transcendent. This scroll was a direct upgrade path.
"You’re kidding me."
He wasn’t kidding anyone. He was alone in a locked room talking to a System interface.
He set the scroll down carefully, like it was made of glass.
click. click.
[Skill Manual: Frost Armor (Rank 2) acquired!]
[Rare Item: Aether-Infused Bandage x10 acquired! Restores severed meridian connections when applied.]
[Skill Manual: Shock-Wave Palm (Rank 2) acquired!]
[Weapon Upgrade Material: Dragon-Bone Powder x2 acquired! Increases weapon durability by 300%.]
[Skill Manual: Shadow Breathing (Rank 2) acquired! Enhances stealth capabilities when active.]
[Tactical Item: Breach Charge x1 acquired! Concentrated explosive. Can breach Rank 3 barriers.]
The Gold Chests were significantly better than the Silver. Higher rank manuals, better materials, more powerful consumables. Each one was a small windfall.
Holden opened the last two Gold Chests together.
click. click.
[Skill Manual: Body Tempering Technique (Rank 2) acquired!]
[Rare Pill: Foundation Pill x2 acquired! Permanently increases energy capacity by 5%.]
Holden looked at the Foundation Pills. Permanent energy increase. No side effects. Those were worth more than gold on the open market.
He pocketed them for later.
Then he turned to the Platinum Chests.
He picked up the first one. It was heavier than it looked. The metal was cold, almost unnaturally so, and the clasp was different from those on the Silver and Gold. A System seal required his intent to open.
Holden pressed his thumb against the seal and pushed.
shhhhk.
The chest opened like a flower unfolding. The lid split into four petals that folded outward, and the light that poured out was blinding. Holden shielded his eyes for a second, then looked.
Inside, resting on a bed of what looked like compressed starlight, was a pair of boots.
[Item: Phantom-Weave Boots (Rank 3) acquired!]
[Description: Silences all footstep sounds. Leaves no physical tracks. Increases movement speed by 25%.]
Holden already had Shadow-Weave Boots but these were better. Rank 3.
He set them aside and opened the second Platinum Chest.
shhhhk.
[Item: Aether-Steel Reinforcement Kit acquired!]
[Description: Can be applied to any weapon to permanently bond Aether-Steel to the blade. Increases cutting power by 60% and adds Rank 3 durability.]
He looked at the kit, then at the spot where his Solar-Forged Sword usually appeared. A Rank 3 weapon reinforced with Aether-Steel would be devastating.
He set the kit aside.
The third Platinum Chest. The one from the Siege Turtle.
Holden picked it up. It was heavier than the other two combined. The seal was more complex, with two layers instead of one. He pressed his thumb against it and pushed harder.
shhhhk. click.
The chest opened.
Inside the chest, folded neatly, was a suit of armor.
[Item Acquired: Rank 3 Phantom-Weave Armor]
[Type: Full Combat Suit]
[Rank: 3]
[Durability: Rank 3 (Aether-Steel reinforced)]
[Passive 1: Thermal Regulation. Maintains optimal body temperature in any environment.]
[Passive 2: Kinetic Dispersal. Absorbs and redirects 40% of blunt force impacts.]
[Passive 3: Shadow-Bend. In low light, the armor actively bends shadows around the wearer, reducing visual detection by 60%.]
[Description: A sleek, form-fitting black combat suit woven from Phantom-Weave and reinforced with microfilament Aether-Steel. Designed for elite operatives who require maximum protection without sacrificing mobility.]
Holden lifted it out of the chest.
The armor was light, impossibly light for something that offered Rank 3 protection. The material was a deep, matte black, smooth to the touch and almost liquid in texture, but when he pressed his finger against it, the surface was harder than stone.
The suit was a full combat rig. Jacket, pants, gloves, boots built in, and a high collar that would protect the neck. Thin enough to wear under a cloak but durable enough to stop a Rank 3 blade.
He looked down at his current outfit. The academy jacket was burned, torn, and soaked in monster blood, ash, and mud. It had served him well. It was also disgusting.
Holden stripped off the ruined jacket and dropped it on the floor.
He put on the Phantom-Weave Armor.
The suit tightened around him automatically. The material shrank and expanded in key areas, mapping his body in seconds until it fit like a second skin. The collar rose to his jawline, the gloves sealed around his wrists, and the boots settled around his ankles.
The temperature change was immediate. The cold, damp air of the bunker vanished as the armor regulated his body heat, wrapping him in a comfortable, stable warmth that made the rain and mud outside feel like a distant memory.
Holden moved his arms, rolled his shoulders, and twisted his torso. No resistance. No stiffness. The armor moved with him like it was painted on.
[Rank 3 Phantom-Weave Armor Equipped!]
[All Passives Active.]
The loot was opened and the gear was equipped. The pile of Silver and Gold rewards sat on the floor in neat stacks: manuals, pills, materials, tactical items. A small fortune in resources.
But none of that was why he was here.
Holden sat down on the floor and pulled up his System interface.
[Current KP: 582,290]
Five hundred and eighty-two thousand.
His next milestone was one million.
He focused on the System.
"System. Show me the requirements for the 1,000,000x Multiplier upgrade."
The interface flickered. A new window appeared.
[Multiplier Upgrade: 10,000x to 1,000,000x]
[Cost: 1,000,000 KP]
[Current Balance: 582,290 KP]
[Deficit: 417,710 KP]
He was short. Four hundred and seventeen thousand points short. At his current rate of farming, he could close that gap in a few more days of intense combat, maybe less if the portal kept producing beasts.
"System. Are there any prerequisites beyond the KP cost?"
The interface flickered again. A new line appeared.
[NOTICE: 1,000,000x MULTIPLIER LOCKED.]
[Host must achieve Cultivation Rank 4 to safely process the mental strain of the 1,000,000x cognitive multiplier.]
[Current Host Rank: Rank 3 (1-Star).]
[Upgrading prior to Rank 4 will result in immediate brain death.]
[NO EXCEPTIONS.]
[NO OVERRIDE AVAILABLE.]
Holden stared at the warning.
Immediate brain death. No exceptions. No override. The System wasn’t offering a choice. It was stating a fact. The 1,000,000x multiplier would turn his brain to mush if he tried to activate it at Rank 3. His cognitive processing speed was already straining the limits of what a Rank 3 body could handle. A hundred-fold increase would fry every neural pathway he had.
He needed Rank 4.
The realm of absolute powerhouses. Vespera was Rank 4. The mutated Emperor had been Rank 4. It was the limit of what most cultivators would ever reach in a lifetime.
And Holden needed to get there before he could unlock the next multiplier.
He sat in the dark room, surrounded by the glow of opened chests and scattered loot, and thought about it.
The normal path to Rank 4 took decades. Cultivation, comprehension, breakthrough after breakthrough, each one harder and more dangerous than the last. A genius might do it in ten years. A prodigy in five. Most never made it at all.
But Holden wasn’t on the normal path.
He had 582,290 KP. The System could force a breakthrough. He had spent 100,000 KP to jump from Rank 2 to Rank 3 in an emergency. The cost to jump from Rank 3 to Rank 4 would be higher. Much higher. But he didn’t need to do it in one shot.
He could buy his way up.
Rank 3, 1-Star to 2-Star. Then 2-Star to 3-Star. Then 3-Star to 4-Star. Each step costing more KP, each breakthrough pushing him closer to the Rank 4 threshold. He had the points and resources. He had the Aether-Crucible to purify monster cores into safe pills.
The path wasn’t through hoarding. It was through spending.
He had to spend his wealth to gain the right to spend more.
Holden smiled and pulled up the System’s breakthrough purchase menu.
[Direct Breakthrough Available:]
[Rank 3, 1-Star to Rank 3, 2-Star: 100,000 KP]
[Rank 3, 2-Star to Rank 3, 3-Star: 130,000 KP]
[Rank 3, 3-Star to Rank 3, 4-Star: 170,000 KP]
[Rank 3, 4-Star to Rank 3, 5-Star: 230,000 KP]
[Rank 3, 5-Star to Rank 3, 6-Star: 350,000 KP]
[Rank 3, 6-Star to Rank 3, 7-Star: 500,000 KP]
[Rank 3, 7-Star to Rank 3, 8-Star: 700,000 KP]
[Rank 3, 8-Star to Rank 3, 9-Star: 1,000,000 KP]
[Rank 3, 9-Star to Rank 4 Breakthrough: 1,500,000 KP]
He ran the math.
Total cost from Rank 3, 1-Star to Rank 4: 4,680,000 KP.
He had 582,290.
That was a lot of killing left to do.
But the war had just started. The portal was still open. The monsters were still coming, and every single one of them was worth points.
He dismissed the purchase menu and leaned back against the wall.
The Phantom-Weave Armor hummed softly against his skin. The loot pile glowed in the dark room.
Holden didn’t have enough yet, but he knew exactly what he needed to do.
Farm. Spend. Rank up. Farm harder. Repeat.
The war wasn’t just a crisis. It was an opportunity. The biggest point farm he had ever seen, delivered by a hole in reality that couldn’t stop pouring out beasts.
He stood up, gathered the loot into his Inventory, and unlocked the door.
It was time to level up his team.
